1 February 2016 News Letter General membership meeting: 42 established members and 14 guests attended the 5 January meeting. The members gathered at 6:30 pm at the Gulf Landings Clubhouse. At 6:30 pm the members socialized and many applications for new members were handed out. We had eight new member applications submitted. Our Club President Chet Jasak called the meeting to order at 7 pm. Frank Bellizio introduced the Guest Speaker Capt Dencil of Ragun Cajun Charters out of Bayview. Our 14 newest members please welcome them into the club and consider taking them fishing with you on your next trip. Check the member s directory and the Angler Profiles for further information. 2 Our Speaker for the January meeting was the one and only Capt Dencil of Ragun Canjun Charters out of Bayview. Please CONTACT Capt. Dencil Powell at to book and exciting day on the water at the special rate of 2 persons for a 6 hour trip for $300 for Fish On Club members who mention he special when booking. Capt Powell started the evening with donating 2 trips, one to the club and one to the WTF program. Thank you. He also gave the members a lot of tips on fishing as his greatest joy now is teaching people to be better fishermen. He had a small bag of four types of soft plastic and explained that with a few hooks and jigs he could catch all inshore fish with the smallest amount of tackle. He had some tips that I will give you: 1. Slow down a slow presentation is so important. Don t jerk it or retrieve quickly. 2. Match your lure color to bottom you are fishing: limestone, grass, mud or kelp. 3. Don t cast and make a big splash, Make the lure enter the water silently. 4. Be super quiet when you enter an area. Pole in if you can, otherwise use trolling motor. It would also be advised to lower your anchor into the water quietly. 5. Lighten up. He fishes soft plastics with just a 2/O circle hook or jig in the 1/8 th or ¼ oz either on bottom or under a float. He likes to use 10lb braid and 15lb fluorocarbon on no bigger than 3000 reels. 6. Tides? Don t worry about tides. A real fisherman can catch fish anytime, although the slack tide can be challenging. Fish whenever you have time off. 7. If not getting any action after 15 minutes move, if catching stay for an hour or so. 8. He prefers gold, grey, green and green-watermelon colored soft plastics and will use gold under a cork 1 to 1.5 ft above bottom. 9. He likes Rapala Skitterwalk in bone and silver and trout color for trout 10. Slow down. If you think you are going too slow, slow down more. Will specializes in flats fishing for redfish, snook, and sea trout as well as Boca Grande Tarpon Fishing. The Tampa Bay area offers a variety of fish as well as a variety of ways to fish for them. Each season throughout the year presents different opportunities at different fish and different places and ways to fish for them. Throughout Capt. Will s life, he s spent time learning when and where to fish for what he s been after and he can put you on the fish you re after too! A note about supporting our Speakers and Volunteering To show support to our Captains that take time out of their evening to come talk to us we encourage you to consider booking a charter or sharing a charter with other members to make it more affordable. Frank Belizio, our webmaster, added an area by the fishing reports where members can add their name as being interested in going on a shared charter and then it is up to them to arrange and book directly with the Captain. This idea was submitted by Jim McCarthy and I think it was genius. I am excited to sign up and hope you are too. The board of the club encourages you to submit ideas to make the club fun and help us prosper and retain members by adding freshness to the club through member s ideas. We also encourage you to volunteer to either be a board member or head up a committee. If not at least consider volunteering to help out at the Wish To Fish, Main Street Clean up, and the Kid s Tournaments. This is your club, become an active member and donate some time! After Holiday Party: On 23 January we held our annual after-holidays party. Over 120 members and spouses/dates attended. The silent auction run by Jack Hexter and crew raised over $ 2000 for the club and the WTF. The items for the auction were donated by local businesses solicited by Russ Thompson, Ernie, Frank and Chet. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and a great time was had by all. 6 New Business and Upcoming Events: General Membership Meetings - Next meeting 2 February 2016 at 6:30pm Meetings are the FIRST Tuesdays of each month Monthly Dinner Socials: 17 February 2016 at 5:30 pm we will meet for dinner at the VFW. Address is 9734 Dick St, Hudson, FL Call Ernie if you get lost or want to come and didn t sign up earlier so we can make room for you. This VFW is a big supporter of the WTF and all the workers there are volunteers so remember to tip well, they sure appreciate it. Kitchen was remodeled to better handle heavy volume so it will be a great night of reasonably priced food and drinks mixed with good friends. 16 Mar 2016 Our March dinner social will be at Carmelita s Restaurant at 8526 Old County Road 54 in New Port Richey. Carmelita s is known for its great Mexican food, large portions and reasonable prices. Monthly Breakfast Socials: Breakfast Socials are restarting with our first breakfast social of the year on 9 February 2016 at The social is held at the Oaks Café located right on the corner of Little and 52 in Hudson. Contact Dave if you have questions or get lost. Anclote Kids Fishing Tournament Anclote Pier in Holiday. Details are pending but the club usually sends members to help with rule enforcement and measuring fish. In the past Roger Depauw has coordinated the volunteers and we hope to have more details and sign- up sheets at the meeting. Winners of the 2015 Annual Fishing Tournament Members had to pre-pay $5.00 per fish to enter. Many went unclaimed so consider getting with Mike and paying $50 for all 10 species and register your fish in the Fishing Report section of the Website. Pictures with measurements encouraged. Year Long Tournament: Mike Spanhel went over the rules and discussed that it is $5 per type of fish to enter. You must be signed up and paid before you catch the fish to enter. 9 Tip of the Month Jack Hexter When the nippers are destroying your jigs, try this. Some days, baby Bluefish, Puffers, and Mackerel destroy soft plastic tails as well as hair jigs within only a few casts. Here is a very inexpensive DIY cure to the problem. Craft store "Pony Beads" come in every color under the rainbow including my favorites, silver and chartreuse. They are also very inexpensive. In the photo below, I added 4 silver beads and a #3 Willow Leaf spinner blade. Notice that the cupped side of the spinner blade faces up. To keep the spinner blade from slipping off I put a small piece of wire insulation on the hook. The spinner cannot spin when mounted like this. The spinner blade wobbles back and forth causing the same motion in the entire jig. Additionally, when the jig is sinking, the blade is flashing rapidly. Rigged this way, these jigs sometimes out fish any lure in my tackle box and last until something bites through my line. Capt. Ken Roy (352) W. Galway Lane Crystal River, FL

10 Ask Jack Jack Hexter Question Jack - recently I have noticed that my braided line is no longer full on my spool. I have had some twists and cut offs. I still have 200 yards of line but it is only three quarters full now. Braid is expensive; can I just tie a braid to braid knot and add 50 more yards of braid to the top to fill it? Answer - I d reverse it on a smaller reel. Say if you are fishing it on a 3000 size reel, reverse it on a 2500 so it fills the spool. You can tie line to line to top it off, but I d not recommend it. You could also pull it all off and put a little more mono backing on. You will do better, longer casts, and quicker retrieves with a topped off spool. Do you have a question for Jack?
