1 OTTER VALLEY AQUARIUM SOCIETY WATERLINE VOL. 7 APRIL 2013 NO.4 THIRD ROW FROM THE BACK First I would like to thank Joan for having us at her lovely home for our meeting. This month s speaker was David Banks from TFCB (Tropical Fish Club of Burlington). Dave put together a great program for people wishing to start breeding fish. I think it was a good reminding experience for breeders who may have become slack in their habits. Dave came down with two other TFCB members and it was a good turnout. There were several auction lots from shrimp to plants. There were a few lots of nice fish and the bidding was good. All in all, a great meeting! Keep-n-wet. Brian Scott April 9th Event - A DVD Presentation SPENCER JACK ~ The Gymnogeophagus of Uruguay [South American eartheaters] ~ ATTENTION ~ WE NOW MEET IN THE LIBRARY S TOP FLOOR MEETING ROOM rather than the ground floor space. It is a large private room with comfortable chairs. Please enter the library through the front door and go up the stairs to the left. 2 THIS MONTHS EVENT Gymnogeophagus is a genus of cichlid fishes from South America, where they are known from various river basins in southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. They are part of a group popularly known as eartheaters Spencer Jack has been active within the aquaria hobby since the age of five. A true cichlidiot he had worked exclusively with cichlids for over twenty years. He has since expanded his horizons to include all types of tropical fish. Spencer Jack has been an active hobbyist within Winnipeg for a number of years. Some of his roles within the fish hobbyist community include: Co-founder of the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg [1989] Founder and President of the Canadian Cichlid Association [2000]. He now owns and operates a tropical fish wholesale business, the afishionados, and is still an avid fishkeeper and breeder. His enthusiasm, humor and dedication towards the aquarium hobby is easily witnessed through his lectures. All of Spencer s lectures are full multimedia presentations using Power Point, and almost all of the pictures shown are original pictures taken by him during his years in the hobby and travels across North, South and Central America. The first part of the meeting will be a board meeting from 7 to 7:30 the DVD runs about 50 minutes. John T CALENDAR OF EVENTS WE MEET AT 7pm AT THE MACLURE LIBRARY IN PITTSFORD, VT. 4 Steve Hallgring Jersey Shore AS Reprinted from The Shoreline, November 2010 PROFILE: Badis badis NAME - Badis-badis COMMON NAME - Badis FAMILY - Badis ORIGIN - South Asia India and Pakistan TYPICAL SIZE/COLOR - The adult male can reach just over 3 inches in length. The females are slightly smaller. The male s coloration, while always very bright, varies greatly as there are many regional morphs. The females are consistently drab (a dull greenish brown). TANK TYPE/SIZE - A pair can be kept in a small (20 long) tank but Badis - badis make a welcome addition to any large peaceful community tank where they oc- cupy the mid level. They prefer a planted tank with rocks, caves and driftwood. DIET - Badis badis will eat flake food as a staple however black or white worms are a welcome addition for added nutrition. WATER PARAMETERS - Water temperature can range from 73 to 80 degrees with a ph between 6.5 and 7.5 and a hardness of 6 18 dgh for optimal conditions. TEMPERMENT - Badis badis is a very peaceful fish ideally suited for aquaria that contains other fish with similar temperament. SEXING - Sexing adult Badis badis is a very simple proposition The males are brilliantly colored and the females look very dull colored. BREEDING - Badis badis prefer to spawn in caves. The spawning ritual is similar to many other species. The male and female will swim in circles around one an- other and occasionally lock mouths prior to entering the cave to lay and fertilize the eggs. A clutch of up to 100 eggs will hatch in 2 3 days but it may be more than a week before free swimming fry emerge from the cave. Baby brine shrimp or other suitably small foods can be offered to the fry until they can consume flake or chopped up black worms. 5 THE MARCH EVENT AT THE OVAS Brian Candib - OVAS J oan Snider rolled out the red carpet for her club members for the March 2013 OVAS Fish meeting. Those in attendance were treated to good food and drink and able to get the grand tour of Joan s fish room. Above are some of the pictures I took and wanted to share. I was surprised at how disciplined that Joan was with her fish room. The tanks were clearly labeled with the species of fish and plants. The area was clean and organized. I know these are things I do not do well in my own fish room. She has a wonderful built in Fish tank with community fish abound. It was a 220 Gallon tank and had an abnormally large piece of driftwood in it that really complemented the aqua-scape. Joan admitted her goal was to replace the tank with a larger one but one not as deep as she tends to take a bath whenever tending to the maintenance of it. That said, and it s kind of strange to T admit, but the one thing that caught my eye was the killifish Globe she had on display. It was basically a round acrylic tank with a built in light and filter. It was overgrown with Java Moss and the fish were able to spawn and the fry had a fighting chance of evading capture. I think that we should all strive to have something unique or just plain out of the ordinary and unexpected, in our fish rooms that combines art with science and gives the room that much more character. Well after all the background checks were performed and folks had their fill of food and drink, Dave Banks did a presentation on Breeding fish Getting Started. I know you are asking why background checks but these type of presentations can bring out the worst of us fish-keepers and we do have to ensure due diligence that the information provided will be used for the good of the hobby and not some illicit and perverted form of entertainment. Dave hit on all the key points of why we like to breed the fish, examples of how to make it happen outside of the normal let it happen, what to feed them, how to help them have a fighting chance and then presented some examples of live-bearers, those that scatter their eggs and the ones that will lay in mops and other substrates. We got to see one of Dave s contraptions that will automatically remove eggs from a cave and place them in a breeder net to prevent them from being eaten. Kind of a nifty little thing and something I will be doing for my little cave breeders in the near term. The meeting concluded with the auction and more food and drink. It was a memorable and also enjoyable event and I hope as a club we can do more of these in the coming future.
