BACKLASH (Commentary from the Board of Directors) March Membership Meeting Catching Shad and Stripers In The Roanoke River (NC) Chuck Lauguridge is coming up from North Carolina to share his knowledge of fishing for shad and stripers on North Carolina s Roanoke River. Catches from North Carolina waters qualify as local catches for submission for individual, club record or annual club tournament credit. Former Virginia Anglers Club Member Nat Burgwyn Passes Former member Nathaniel ( Nat ) T. R. Burgwyn passed away on Friday, March 3, 2006 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Nat was very active in the local angling community. He was a cofounder and past president of both the Fly Fishers of Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock. He was also an active member of The Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, the Costal Conservation Association, the Cohoke Club and The Virginia Anglers Club. Nat was an active fly fisherman and fly-tier. His entire obituary is available on line at The membership of the Virginia Anglers Club extends condolences to his surviving wife and children. Scale Certification and Dues Payment Go Hand-in-Hand As of March 1, 2006, catch entries submitted by members will receive credit only if the submitting member s dues are current. If a member uses a scale certified by the Weigh Master, the certification of that scale must be current before fish weighed on those scales will be considered for credit Treasurer Fred Cousins will be glad to receive any outstanding membership renewals and Weigh Master Larry Allen will be available for scale certification, both at the March Membership Meeting. FLY REEL RAFFLE DRAWING at the March Membership Meeting The raffle for a Galvan 6 weight large arbor fly reel will conclude at the March Membership Meeting with the drawing of the lucky ticket for this reel. Tickets will be available from Eddy Johnston for $5.00 each at the meeting. The drawing will be at the break. The Virginia Anglers Club thanks Greentop Sporting Goods for the donation of this very fine reel for our raffle. The Club will be registered in the database of non-profit organizations. Individual shoppers will have to register at the web site. Each quarter, an will be sent to registered shoppers asking to which non-profit in the database the cash balance in the shoppers Golden Gift account should be transferred. Once the non-profit is identified, the funds will be transferred directly to the s checking account. Each member is requested to register by contacting and following the simple registration steps. Have your Ukrop s Valued Customer card handy, because the registration process asks for some numbers on the card. Please support the in the Ukrop s Golden Gift program and register now. 2 Page 2 BACKLASH continued from Page 1. Country Store To Hold Hat and Cap Festival At March Membership Meeting The Country Store will hold a Hat and Cap Festival at the March Membership Meeting. The current official khaki colored embroidered fishing cap will be available at $15.00 each. The exciting new embroidered canvas double-billed style hat will be introduced. This hat has a brim on the rear that can be turned down to shade the back of the neck and the ears or turned up to catch and funnel rain down the front of your shirt. This style of hat is often seen worn in areas of high sunlight intensity like the Florida Keys. This new hat will be available at $ But wait, three s more! For the nostalgic members (or anyone wanting a good cheap cap), the famous red and white cap with a solid red panel in front containing the club logo and white open mesh panels around the back will be available at the rock bottom price of only $1.00 per cap while supplies last. Now is the time to freshen up your inventory of lucky angling caps. Distribution of Member Information Packets Is Expensive, Contents Important Picking up in person or having a buddy pick up the annual Membership Information Packets is an excellent way to help the Club avoid the high costs of postage for sending unclaimed packets to members. These packets were available at the Annual Banquet and at the February Membership Meeting. Postage expense is pretty much unavoidable for members who live out of state or even out of the country. However, of the 47 unclaimed packets mailed out this year, 32 were sent to addresses in the Richmond metropolitan area. The postage expense incurred for all 47 packets was $108. When you receive or pick-up your packet, be sure to replace old angling rules sheets, rosters, etc. with the new sheets that are in these packets. The club leadership will be active this year to seek ways to distribute this information that will minimize or eliminate postage expense. Seeks New Location For The 2006 Annual Banquet The Board of Directors has requested that Banquet Chairman Eddy Johnston secure a new location for the 2006 Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting. This event will take place in January Any Board of Directors member can explain the decision to change the venue for the 2007 banquet. A candidate facility needs to be able to seat 60 to 70 attendees for dinner in a dedicated room and offer beer, wine and mixed drinks. Please submit all suggestions to Eddy Johnston by e- mail at fishhead55@hotmail.com, call Eddy at (H) or see Eddy in person at the March Membership Meeting. Membership Committee Chairman Needed Member Glenn Sides has tendered his resignation as Chairman of the Membership Committee. President Bob Shepherd is seeking a new Membership Committee Chairman. The chairman of this committee makes sure prospective members receive a copy of a membership application, assist as needed with the completion of the application and collect the applications and checks for the initiation fee and the prorated annual dues. The Chairman then brings the application to the attention of the president who in turn calls for a vote into membership of the applicant by the members of the Board of Directors. Once the applicant is voted in, the membership chairman distributes copies of the application to the treasurer, the secretary and the letter secretary. Most of the work of the Membership Committee Chairman takes place during club meetings. The chairman also attends the monthly Board of Director s Meeting. Please see Bob Shepherd if you are interested in this vacant chairmanship. For the Leadership Team John Wetlalufer, Sr. Director CATCHY COMMENTS By Elly Robinson The catching seems to have slowed down for club members in the past month as compared to the December 1 st thru February 15 th period. Stuart Lee stopped fishing the ocean a few weeks too early or his name would have been on that state record striper! Instead he had to settle for a 17lb. 8oz. Striped Bass on 6 fly for 350 points. The fish was caught off Rudee on February 18 th. Now Stuart did you turn left or right and how many miles did you run? The February membership meeting s Angler of the Month competition came down to who caught the biggest Rainbow Trout at John s Creek on 2 lb. fly. That honor went to Fred Cousins for his 9lb. 4oz. lunker followed by Buddy Noland for his 8lb. 14oz. bow. I limped in for 3 rd place with an 8lb. 6oz rainbow. Point totals were close: 722, 693 and 654 which

3 Page 3 CATCHY COMMENTS continued from Page 2. reflect the raising of the Rainbow Trout basic weights from last year. Fred also entered the 4 th place fish, a 41lb. Blue Cat on 4lb. general that scored a measly 437 points. The Yellow Perch fishing has been red hot at the Chickahominy River Dam since mid February. Catches of 75 to 150 perch per boat have been common. And many nice Crappie have also been caught while perch fishing right in the same area and water depth of 20 to 26 feet. Mike Cline has probably caught the most perch over 1lb. with his best being 1lb. 1oz. on 2 plug for 279 points, a new club record. I also had a 1lb. 1oz. on 2 spin. The Crappie have been a little larger. Mike Cline has the top Crappie so far with a 1lb. 12oz. on 2 plug for 277 points caught on February 8 th. I had a 1lb. 6oz. Crappie on 2 spin on February 16 th and a 1lb. 11oz. one on 2 spin on February 25 th. In addition to stripers which hit the jigs intended for the perch, there have been a few Pickerel caught. I have the best one so far with a 3lb. 1oz. on 2 spin for 306 points caught on February 20 th. Speaking of Yellow Perch, Scott the elder Johnston, who for his age has to be the iron man of fly fishing, has been stroking them. Scott fished exclusively with fly and ended up with the species leading Yellow Perch with a 1-0 on 2 fly for 333 points and 3 club records, 14oz. on 8 fly for 171 points, 12oz on 12 fly for 113 points which he bested 11 days later with a 14oz. on 12 fly for 132 points. The fish were caught in Dragon Run and at the Chickahominy Dam.Way to go Scott you are the greatest! Few trips have been made to Yarmouth Creek off the Chickahominy River this year. But on February 15 th I managed to catch 2 Carp with the biggest weighing 10lb. 12oz. on 2 spin for 335 points which took the species and spin division leads. Actually all fishing in Yarmouth has been a disappointment but with the Chick Dam being so good nobody seemed to care. Mike Cline and I made another trip to Yarmouth on 3/11 and didn t get a strike. Mickey and Elayne Kodroff have been hitting East Lake in North Carolina for Crappie. Elayne has taken the Freshwater Spouse cup lead with a 1lb. 4oz. Crappie on 2 spin. Mickey matched Elayne s accomplishment with a bookend Crappie also caught on 2 spin. Both fish scored 198 points. Great to see Mickey back fishing and feeling well. Elayne, you go girl! Fred Murray, needing a break from the bear stress at Maymont, took Bob Shepherd to a secret honey hole to try to get Bob the Master Angler 7lb. 8oz. bass on Plug. Well Fred held up his end by picking a great day and a fantastic pond and the rest was up to Bob. Would you believe Bob caught more fish over 5lbs. than he has in his entire life combined, including 2 fish over 7lbs. only to fall short by ounces and end up not getting the coveted bass. Most of the bass on the banner day were caught on spinner baits. Now Bob will have to keep sucking up to Fred to try to get another invite. I guess that is why there are only 5 Master Anglers in the history of the club.
