1 RICHMOND VIRGINIA November 2003 November Meeting The November meeting will be held at the Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries Building, 4010 West Broad Street at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 25th. The entrance and parking are at the rear of the building. November Program Topic Where is that Life Jacket? Jeff Decker, Boating Education Coordinator with the VDGIF will be our featured speaker at the November membership meeting. With the new boating regulations now in effect having your PFD's in the wrong place in your boat could result in a citation (and not the kind you would put on the wall!). Jeff will guide us through the new regulations and also provide statistics on boating safety in Virginia. We will be having dinner with our speaker at 5:45 at Byram's Restaurant prior to the meeting and everyone is invited to attend. Backlash (Commentary from the President - John Wetlaufer) The November Membership Meeting will be our last Membership Meeting in calendar year As a reminder, we do not have a Membership Meeting in December. In January, the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, being held on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at the Meadow Brook Country Club, will take the place of the January Membership Meeting. Mark your calendar now for the 24th. Details of the Annual Meeting will appear in coming issues of the Angler. If you are stalking a specie award for the 2003 club tournament, get busy. As you know, the 2003 Angling Year ends on November 31, There isn t much time left to catch the fish that will grab the pewter. How s your luck running these days? Come to the November Membership Meeting and check it out. The VAC will raffle off a new Penn 320 LD Super Level Wind Reel with Lever Drag. Our good friends at J&W Seafood in Deltaville have graciously provided the Club with this fine piece of angling equipment. How many Virginia Anglers Club members remember Men s Nights at Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimers? Way back when these stores were the place to shop for Christmas gifts for your wife or girlfriend ( significant others had not been coined yet). An evening a few weeks prior to Christmas was set aside for men-only shopping. Dinner at the M&R Tea Room was also removed from the sissy category for this night. Eddy Johnston, our storekeeper for our Country Store, will honor this tradition with a pre-christmas men s only shopping night at the November Membership Meeting. Featured will be the Holiday Classic Combo comprised of the lucky VAC hat and the coveted VAC mug, both for only $3.00. Individually, these items will be available at $1.00 and $2.00 respectively. Speaking of the Country Store, storekeeper Johnston advises that 24 shirt orders are needed to have the minimum for which the supplier will consider placing artwork on the shirts. We have special orders for about only _ of the required minimum number of shirts. Fortunately, the minimum of 24 shirts does not have to be the same style, color or size. Think ahead for your 2004 shirt needs. Perhaps you need for a long sleeve T shirt for winter fishing. How about a shirt for your wife or grandchildren? Let Eddy have your order so we can make the minimum. Do you want a sure-fire way of cheating the USPS out of being able to shred or loose your copy of the Angler as well as receive advanced, on-time delivery? If you are getting this copy of the monthly Angler via surface mail, please consider receiving it via . About Continued on page 2.

2 Virginia Anglers Club Backlash Continued from page club members have elected to receive versions of the newsletter. There are advantages of versions of the Angler. Electronic copies of the Angler go out earlier than the hard copy versions and receipt of each is almost instantaneous. A copy of the Angler is easier to find in a newsletter file on your computer than the hard copy that is lost in the pile of yet-to-be-read magazines. Printing and postage savings are realized with conversion to versions. Please call Scott Davis for help if you have questions about receipt and filing of the Angler and if you wish to convert to receipt of the Angler via . Finally, 2nd VP / Angling Activities Chairman Bob Brown started work early on the 2004 Tournament Schedule. His efforts now have the schedule in good shape early enough that the first cut of the schedule can be found elsewhere in this issue. Bob s good, early work should make coordinating vacation time and setting aside tournament days more easily done than in past years. Please give him some feed back on how you like the early release of the Tournament Schedule. Personally, I think it is great work. Regards and Tight Lines, John Fred Murray with a fantastic Brown Trout recently caught from Oak Orchard, NY CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline September s Angler of the Month award goes to Larry Allen for his 5-0 speckled trout on 2-spin that scored 333 points. Scott Johnston was second with a 2-2 club record croaker on 6-fly that scored 212 points. Third went to Quentin Corbett for a 2-8 Spanish mackerel in the surf that scored 166 points. I m happy to say that the October Angler of the Month honors went to Dennis Cline for a club record 62-0 red drum in the surf that scored 442 points. Fred Cousins was second with a 30-0 blue catfish on 4-general worth 326 points. Tony Horsley fished Harker s Island for the third place fish, a 14-0 little tunny on 8-spin for 280 points. Congratulations to all. Post Isabel saltwater action includes a potential new state record bluefin tuna caught by Dr. Jim Wright. The big tuna weighed 393 pounds and was caught on 130-general trolling ballyhoo. You might think that a new state record would also be a club record, but you would be wrong! Robert Gilliam holds the club record with a 1080-pound bluefin caught on 130-general on 9/30/79!! Either fish would be a double-hernia for me! Dr. Wright also entered a 3-12 triggerfish on 12 general and reports spot to 1-5 from Lynnhaven Inlet. Talk about a multi-dimensional fisherman! Congratulations to Dr. Jim! Phil Perrine has laid claim to one of the largest speckled trout in several years. He caught a 6-12 on 4-spin from the Mobjack in late September. Wow! The only other saltwater entries have been for surf caught fish. Scott Davis released a nice 39-0 red drum. The large drum disappeared after October 22nd, when I released a Puppy drum ranging from 5 to 8 pounds were still available through the first week in November and scattered large striped bass are showing in the surf of several of the barrier islands. I released a 27 pound, 42 striper on November 2nd. In freshwaters, Rich McDaniel released the year s biggest bass, with a 6-6 largemouth on 6-plug. He also released a nice 2-12 chain pickerel on 2-spin on the Cowpasture river of all places! Fred Cousins and Bob Brown released blue cats weighing 30-0 and 21-4 on the James. Scott Johnston pulled a club record 0-14 white perch from the Piankatank using 8-fly. The rest of our entries came from the Oak Orchard, NY region, where Lynn Spurlin had a remarkable day. Lynn released Coho and Chinook salmon and brown and steelhead trout all on the same day! His Coho was a club record 13-0 on 12-fly that bested Stuart Lee s 11-8 caught in August. Fred Murray had a spectacular trip to the area as well, catching lots of trophy brown trout. Fred s best was a 15-0 brown on 6-fly that scored a whopping 750 points!! 2

3 Virginia Anglers Club Thanks Bernie Somewhere up there, Bernie must be smiling! These past three years, the drum fishing from his beloved Eastern Shore surf has been excellent, at least by today s standards. Moreover, new red drum regulations now protect the large fish and further limit the take on smaller drum. It should only get better! A few weeks ago, I beached a large red drum after spending several days on a particularly fishy looking piece of beach. The fish hadn t fought particularly hard, so I was amazed at its bulk when I carried it onto the sand for measuring and tagging. I knew it was a good fish, but I was truly shocked when I weighed it! The scale read 62-0! I weighed it a second time to be sure and then doublechecked the zero on the scale. Wow, I had finally done it!!! After several yee-haws and various other exclamations, I remember saying Bernie, this one s for you! as I returned the big drum to the water. Bernie was among the first club members to enter a surf caught channel bass, with a 47-8 caught 5/29/64. As near as I can tell from our records, William McCarthy was the first, with a 50-0 on 10/14/62, followed by Armistad Peyton s 55-0 on 9/28/63 and Louis Pendleton s 42-0 on 5/31/63. Bernie s largest surf entry was a 56-0 caught on 9/29/68, which earned him the club surf record. He still holds the 20-general record with a 59-0 caught in Bernie Skydanek shared his love for the Eastern Shore surf with many club members. Long before the Nature Conservancy purchased the first of their fourteen barrier islands, Bernie was organizing club surf outings. He would charter a dead rise out of Oyster to carry club members and camping gear to the island of choice. I believe some of the outings required more than one boat. These outings produced several hair-raising tales and even more quality drum. One of those red drum, I think, was the 60-8 caught by James Smith on 5/22/71, which has reigned as the club record for over 32 years! Long after his health precluded one last trip to the beach, Bernie still had an infectious exuberance about fishing the barrier islands. I was one of those he so afflicted. Even though I never got to fish with Bernie, I can still see the twinkle in his eyes when he talked about surf fishing on the Eastern Shore. Thanks Bernie. Web Links... This is a reminder that the new Blackwater Nottoway Riverkeeper Program web-site is now complete. There is current news, a gallery of pictures and you can leave comments and post news. Check it out. Angling Rules As the angling year comes to an end, please remember to return entry cards to Dennis Cline as soon as possible. The deadline for mailing them is December 10th. Please send any late November cards directly to Dennis rather than to the club s post office box. Also remember to fill out applications for our Angler of the Year awards (freshwater, saltwater, new member and Joe Brooks) and send them to Dennis. This year the competition is close for several of these awards, so we should have an interesting awards banquet. NEWSLETTER ADVERTISING Club members can run a business card ad in our newsletter for $5 per month. Non-members pay $10 per month. Other deals are negotiable. Contact Scott Davis if interested. (H) or (W) Wake up call! A man and his wife were giving each other the silent treatment. After a week of no talking, the man realized he would need his wife to wake him up for an early morning fishing trip. Not wanting to be the first one breaking the silence, he wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me up at 5 a.m." The next morning the man arose, only to discover it was 9 a.m. and he'd missed the trip. Furious, he was about to go and find his wife when he noticed a piece of paper on his pillow. It read: "It's 5 a.m. Wake up!" 3
