1 RICHMOND May 2003 VIRGINIA May Meeting and Program Topic Flounder, Fish Fry and Fun This month's meeting will be held at the Maymont Robins Nature and Visitor Center where we will be treated to a fish fry and a seminar on catching flounder. Be sure to mark your calendars for May 27th! Dr. Greg South will share his secrets for catching these tasty fish in very shallow water using techniques he has developed. Buddy and Danny Noland will be our cooks for the evening and they just ask us, great fishermen that we are, to provide enough filets for the group. The get together begins at six o'clock and goes till all the fish, beer and BS is gone. This should be a fun evening and a good chance to bring any new prospective members to meet the group. In addition the Maymont aquarium will be open for viewing (not fishing). We hope to see everyone there for this fun evening. CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline Mike Cline won the April Angler of the Month contest with a 1-0 white perch on 2-spin that scored 266 points. There were no other entries, so second and third places went unclaimed! Congratulations Mike! Hopefully the May contest will be more spirited. On the freshwater front, Rich McDaniel booked his first blue catfish entry with a nice 27-4 on 12 general. White perch are all over the James, but only one new entry to report from Bruce Henderson for a 0-12 on 2-fly. The hickory shad entries have also slowed. Bruce released a 1-4 on 2-fly and David English released a 1-10 on 4-fly. A trio of sunfish entries on 2-fly came from Tom Barnett for a 0-15, Elly Robinson for a 0-14 and Scott Davis for a nice 1-4 that scored 400 points. All were caught in private ponds. Mickey Kodroff registered a dozen American shad releases from the Tar River, which has been high and Continued on page 2.

2 CATCHY COMMENTS Continued from page 1. un-fishable most of the spring. His best fish was a nice 5-0 on 4-spin. The Nottoway has also been too high to fish most of the spring. I did manage one successful trip and released five Americans to 4-3 (on 2-fly) before a nasty thunderstorm ran me off. Jim Farrell set a new club record with a 12-0 gar on 4- spin from the Chick. Another club record goes to Scott Johnston for a super 13-8 gar on 8-fly from the James. This could be Scott s forth IGFA fly rod world record for gar since he currently holds the 2,4 and 6 tippet records and the 13-8 easily tops the current 8-8 record on 8-tippet. Congratulations Scott! Saltwater action is ready to bust wide open. Robbie Robinson entered the first croaker of the year, which was a big 2-10 on 2-spin! Dr. Jim Wright released a weakfish estimated at over 10 pounds in Rudee Inlet in late April. He also scored with a pair of black sea bass citations as the month ended. There has been little to report from the surf so far this spring, but a few red drum have been caught. The best catches over the past month have come from Florida and New York. Reggie White had a super time on a Miami area charter. He scored with a 41-0 cobia on 8-general and released five sailfish caught on live bait. Four of the releases were on 8-general and the fifth on 6-general! At Oak Orchard, NY, Stamford Niou s 15-0 steelhead on 8-fly set a club record. Stam s fish bested Ronnie Sides 14-0 and became the heaviest steelhead ever entered in the VAC! Congratulations guys! By the way, there is a complete list of all time heaviest VAC fish included in this newsletter that I am calling the Lunker Club! (see page 3.) Backlash (Commentary from the President - John Wetlaufer) We just aren t working Team Sides hard enough this year. Ronnie and Glenn are our Orientation and Membership Chairmen, respectively. So far this year, only 3 new candidates have been oriented and welcomed as new members in the club. We have a lot to offer as an angling club. It should not be too hard to think of a personal friend, a son or angling buddy who would enjoy being part of our club. Please take a little time to think about someone you know that would enjoy this club and participating in our angling fun. This month s Membership Meeting featuring a fish fry and a program by Greg South is a great opportunity to let a buddy check us out. The club s leadership group has been acutely aware that we are loosing too many new members too soon. We want to turn this loss around. If you have any ideas on how to encourage new members to retain their membership, please pass them along to any officer or director. One reason for the quick turn around that the leadership team has identified and discussed at length is that a new member may initially be intimidated by our annual tournament, our catch records, our angling rules and the whole light tackle thing. The leadership group is working to identify new ways to get new members off to an active, acknowledged start in a club angling program. By offering opportunities for new members to feel comfortable to participate in a club angling program, the new member, if interested, will be able to become knowledgeable, skilled and active in the light tackle aspects of fishing. For starters, you will see more Jungle Rule opportunities included in our tournaments. I am sure we will find ways got get new members active from the git go. At the same time, we will not compromise the challenges and accomplishments in our long standing angling program. Tight lines and good fun, John Jim Farrell s new Club Record Gar (12#) on 4 spin 2

7 Best Buy on the Outer Banks by Mike Ostrander On a recent trip to Cape Hatteras, my first in quite a while, I found the 'Best Buy' you can find on great casting, 'Hopkins' type lures. (Other than the fifteen cent shrimp and ice cold draft beer at the Pelican Restaurant, on Ocracoke Island, this was my favorite discovery). While fishing the south beach of Hatteras Island, I began talking with a fellow surf fisherman. I mentioned that I had forgotten a few lures, mostly Hopkins, and was just going to bait fish for red drum and blue fish. He proceeded to tell me that he knew of a guy who sold new, 'Hopkins' type lures at a bargain price. The only catch, he stated, was that you had to buy a dozen at a time. When I found the place and began looking over the lures, it wasn't a question of which twelve lures I wanted, but how many dozen!!! The directions to this 'Best Buy' on the Outer Banks go a little something like this. On Highway 12, at the south end of Buxton, or the north end of Frisco, you'll see the only school around. I believe it's Cape Hatteras School. Anyway, it's the only school around and is located on the west side of the road. Across the road (Hwy 12) from the school's ball field, you'll see a small 'NAPA' sign. If you are heading south, turn left at the 'NAPA' sign. Directly ahead of you is a repair garage, while to the right of you is a house. Go to the back yard of the house, park, and you'll see a small shed in the backyard. Go to the shed and knock. If no one is in the shed, go to the back door of the house and knock. When you find the husband or wife, let them know you would like to buy some lures. When you get into the shed, you'll find an array of great casting lures. This huge inventory of lures, as I was told, is sold to tackle shops along the Outer Banks, packaged as a name brand and sell from $3.50 to nearly $5.00 each. He cannot advertise that he sells these lures and word of mouth is all he has. These 'Hopkins' imitations are available with or without added color (pink, green, pink/green combo, etc.) as well as small, medium and large sizes. He also has, on occasion, used Mirror Lures and other odd ball lures for sale. The 'Best Buy', though are the 'Hopkins' imitations. The price... $17 a dozen. Good luck... I bought two dozen and didn't make a dent in his inventory. Oh, and if you talk nice to the guy, (love the yard, great lures, nice shed), he'll give an extra lure or two for free!!! Take care and happy fishing. Ukrop s Golden Gift Program Our club has once again registered in the Ukrop s Golden Gift Program. The Program began on February 3 and ended March 29.
