3 JUSTIN EMIL Head Coach Third Season Southern Miss, 2002 Now in his third season at the helm of Rice University golf, head coach Justin Emil has taken strides with the Owl program since his hiring in June 2011, highlighted by the team s run to the ship. He was named the league s 2014 Coach of the Year as well. Emil s squad lurked just behind the leaders at the C-USA tournament in fourth place through each of the first two rounds before making a move in Tuesday s finale. The Owls 286 in the final round was the best score of the day by three strokes. Emil and his team took the lead into the clubhouse to eagerly watch the final groups finish. Rice held on to top second-place UAB by one stroke, giving the program its first conference title in 75 years. He guided rookie Kevin Reilly to C-USA Freshman of the Year, all-freshman team and second team all-conference honors as well. On the whole, Rice cut 5.25 strokes per round off of its average from the previous season. Three of Rice s top five players in stroke average were underclassmen. In his first season, , Emil coached Jeff Wibawa to a breakout campaign in which the sophomore captured the medal in October s Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch, thanks in part to a second-round score of 67. Emil also aided numerous other young players on the squad to make strides and develop their game throughout the campaign. The squad s hard work paid off in Emil s second season, as the Owls notched four top-10 finishes in , with a high-water mark of third place at the Rice Intercollegiate. In fact, the Owls played in five common tournaments and courses in each of the two seasons and averaged a 17.6-stroke improvement this past season. In Emil s tenure, the Owls have placed 19 honorees on the Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll and he has coached four of C-USA Academic Medal honorees. Rice has been honored with the NCAA Public Recognition Award in each of his seasons for posting Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent nationally. Emil joined the Rice University staff after a five-year stint as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt. While at Vanderbilt, the Commodores won three team championships - the 2010 Samford Intercollegiate, the 2009 Seminole Intercollegiate and the 2008 Kauai Collegiate Cup - and advanced to postseason play three times. In his first season at Vanderbilt, the Commodores shot a 21-under 267 for the final round of the NCAA West Regional played at Arizona State s Karsten Golf Course to finish fifth and earn a spot in the 27-team, 2007 NCAA National Championship. The Commodores were 17-under after 36 holes and the 21-under par the final day of the regional was the low round of the tournament. During the season, Vanderbilt captured the Kauai Collegiate Cup, the program s first tournament championship since Two Commodore golfers went on to win individual championships during the year. The campaign was highlighted by a team title at the Seminole Intercollegiate, two more individual tournament championships and a return to postseason play. In addition to winning the Samford Intercollegiate, Vanderbilt advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships for the third time in four years in Vanderbilt posted seven, Top 10 finishes during the season. Led by another individual championship, the Commodores were runners-up at the 18-team Hummingbird Intercollegiate during the season. While at Vanderbilt, Emil played a role in the development of Vandy Golf Day, which raised over $150,000 for the golf program in four years. In May of 2009, he regained his amateur status after five years of professional golf and continues to play competitively. He made the cut en route to finishing 31st at the 2009 Tennessee State Amateur and finished sixth at the Tennessee State Mid-Amateur in the fall of Prior to Vanderbilt, Emil served as a golf professional for Windance Golf and Country Club in his native Gulfport, Miss. In that capacity, he was in charge of budgeting, purchasing and organizing inventory for the golf shop and taught lessons to adults and held annual golf camps for juniors. He also directed all tournament operations for member events, local outings and state golf association championships. As a professional, he finished second in the Tennessee PGA Section Assistants Championship (74-67) in 2007, qualifying to play in the Taylor Made/ adidas PGA Assistants Championship. Emil was a four-year letterman at the University of Southern Mississippi. He was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2000 and named second-team all-conference following his senior season in He qualified for the United States Amateur Championship in 2002 (Oakland Hills) and 2003 (Oakmont). Emil earned his bachelor s degree in sports administration from Southern Miss in He continued his education at USM, earning a master s degree in sports management in 2004 while working with the Golden Eagle golf team as a graduate assistant. Emil and his wife, Amber, welcomed their daughter, Brooklyn Rivers Emil, in July 2013.

4 JJ WOOD Assistant Coach First Season Pepperdine, 2006 Rice University head men s golf coach Justin Emil announced the addition of assistant coach JJ Wood to his staff on Jan. 8, In his brief time with the Owls this spring, Wood has brought a wealth of instructional experience and playing success and has played a large role in leading the team to the ship. Most recently, Wood served as the Director of Instruction at Pecan Grove Country Club outside of Houston, where he developed instruction programs and taught private lessons. He also managed a team of instructors and fitness coaches and managed managerial tasks for the department. Wood has worked as a golf instructor since concluding his collegiate playing career in As an undergraduate, he played three years at Pepperdine University and led the Waves to three West Coast Conference championships and the NCAA Tournament finals. Upon his graduation in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural science and business with a sport administration emphasis, Wood enrolled in graduate school at the University of Oklahoma. He played his final season with the Sooners in and was the team s stroke average leader. Wood graduated from OU in 2008 with a Masters of Education. Along with competing in the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship, Wood was the medalist in the Arizona Men s Amateur Stroke Play Medalist the same year and played professionally in the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in 2008 as well as other tours as a pro. As an instructor, Wood has also coached at Calabasas Country Club (Calabasas, Calif.), Woodforest Golf Club (Montgomery, Texas) and Matt Swanson School of Golf (Houston, Texas). Additionally, Wood has industry experience as a corporate sales executive for the Houston Golf Association and as a learning enhancement center supervisor with Oklahoma s Athletic Academic Services department. He is also a registered PGA Apprentice with the PGA of America. The San Diego, Calif. native represented the United States at the World Junior Golf Cup in 1998 and won the International Junior Golf Tournament in Wood earned all-state, all region and all-conference accolades all four seasons at 5A Yuma High School. He was inducted into the school s hall of fame in Wood is single and resides in Houston. He has two dogs, Hollie and Sug. 20 Rice Remembers James Ragan Throughout the past few months, Rice University and Rice Athletics have mourned the loss of junior golfer James Ragan, who passed away at his home in Corpus Christi on Feb. 17, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 20 years old. On the course, the Owls have worn orange ribbons this spring, honoring both the memory of Ragan as well as the Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation, which Ragan created in "Today is a very sad day," Rice head golf coach Justin Emil said at the time of Ragan s passing. "James Ragan made a positive impact on everyone around him. I'm honored to have coached such a fine young man who truly taught me way more than I could ever teach him." "James was a role model in so many ways for all of us at Rice," Rice Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson added. "Most importantly to me, it was clear that his fervent drive was to spend what time he could with his fellow students. His determination to live and to help other young cancer victims is an example to all of us and a reminder about how fortunate we are to study, work and live together in this caring community." Ragan was an inspirational force not only to his fellow Rice golfers and to the Owls' student body, but to his fellow cancer patients as a tireless advocate for the treatment of pediatric cancer through the Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation. Ragan founded TOKC along with his sister Mecklin in 2007 in the aftermath of raising $40,000 for research through a Toga Party to celebrate his 14th birthday. The following year, they added a golf tournament to the festivities and the eighth annual event will be held in Corpus Christi on May 7. To date, the Ragans have raised over $750,000 for TOKC through a variety of events and programs, including the sale of orange "Triumph" bands. Ragan's promising career in tennis was cut short in 2006 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, Osteosarcoma, which resulted in the removal of his left knee, part of his tibia and a large part of his femur, replacing them with metal rods. Despite recurrence of the disease, Ragan took up golf and became a standout junior and high school player, which allowed him to fulfill his dream of competing for Rice. He enrolled at Rice in the fall of 2011 and walked on to the golf team, joining his sister on South Main. Mecklin Ragan played tennis for the Owls, lettering in He played for two seasons with the Owls, earning one letter. He made collegiate debut at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Invite in the fall of 2011 and was the Owls' No. 2 finisher with a three-round score of 228 ( ) to tie for 45th. He finished third on the team that fall with an average strokes per round. He was named Rice's winner of the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award for the Spring of 2013 and he was nominated for an NCAA Inspiration Award. His final competition for Rice came in February 2013 at the Rice Intercollegiate where he matched his career-best round of 73 on the second day of competition. A moment of silence was held in Ragan s honor at before the second day of play at this season s Rice Intercollegiate the morning after his passing. Players from each of the competing teams donned the same orange ribbons as the Rice squad. While continuing his studies as well as playing golf at Rice, Ragan also served on the Board of Directors of the Sunshine Kids, was the 2010 Master of Ceremony for M.D. Anderson's Children's Cancer Hospital's "A Conversation With a Living Legend" with Jack Nicklaus and Jim Nantz as well as a special ambassador for the hospital and was the Master of Ceremony and Auctioneer at The Craig Biggio Sunshine Kids Gala for several years. Nantz offered his own condolences during the following weekend s CBS broadcast of a PGA Tour event, saying that upon meeting Ragan, he and Nicklaus agreed he was one of the remarkable young men we would ever come across in our lifetimes.
