2 What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis affects the lungs and digestive system of people who are born with the disease. The disease occurs in one of every 3,500 live births and about 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. Currently there are approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States and 70,000 people world-wide that have this lifethreatening disease. More than 1 in 30 Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. A cure is within reach with YOUR help. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has raised and invested hundreds of millions of dollars to help develop CF drugs and therapies. Through our efforts, the life expectancy of a child with CF has doubled in the last 30 years, and research to find a cure is more promising than ever. Even though real progress towards a cure has been made, the lives of young people with CF are still cut far too short. We need the public s continued support to fulfill our mission and help extend the lives of those with the disease. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has unrestricted financial reserves of about 15 times its budgeted annual expenses, following a onetime royalty sale in These funds, along with the public s continuing support, are needed to help accelerate our efforts to pursue a lifelong cure for this fatal disease, develop lifesaving new therapies and help all people with CF live full, productive lives. Important note on attendance for people with CF and their families: The health and well-being of people with cystic fibrosis is our top priority. Medical evidence shows that certain bacteria can be passed between individuals who have CF and can lead to worse symptoms and speed decline in lung function. To limit the serious risk of cross-infection between people with CF, only one person with CF may be invited to attend the indoor portion of each CF Foundation-sponsored event. For the outdoor portion of the event, people with CF should maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from each other. Please note: People with CF and their families should be aware that individuals with CF might choose to attend Foundation events or meetings without notifying event organizers. We strongly discourage this; however, we cannot guarantee that only one person with CF will be present at any indoor Foundation event. For more information, please call us at
