1 Robotics High Rise Challenge High-rise is played on an 8 ft. x 8 ft. field, surrounded by a 2.5 inch tall perimeter. There are a total of thirty-six (36) Cubes, twelve (12) of each color, available as Scoring Objects in the game. There is one (1) Scoring Zone and are three (3) High-rise Bases on the field. OBJECTIVE Score points by moving the red, white, and blue Scoring Cubes from their starting position (left below) to the Scoring Zone (gray area below) and by building High-rises on each color s High-rise Base (right below) in a one-minute Match. QUALIFIER RULES There will be three qualifying rounds. If a team fails to score points in ANY of the qualifying rounds, they will not be allowed to compete in the head to head competition and will receive a 65 for the project grade. Field Setup 1. Matches are played on a designated field. a. For qualifying rounds, each team will compete against the clock to score as many points possible. b. At the start of the match no robot may be more than eighteen inches (18 ) wide, eighteen inches (18 ) long, and twelve inches (12 ) tall 2. There are six (6) cubes of each different color (red, white, blue) placed on one side of the field. 18 cubes total. 3. There will be a designated scoring area where teams must build their high-rises within. 4. Each member of the team will get a chance to drive in each qualifying round for 60 seconds. SCORING AREA Qualifier Scoring 1. The score is counted at the end of each round, after all Cubes and Robots come to rest. The team s final score will be divided by the number of drivers to get the team s qualifying score for that round. 2. A team must have at least two (2) high rises to score any points. 3. Each Cube Scored in the Scoring Zone is worth a point value equal to the High-rise Height of the same color as the Cube. 4. A Cube is Scored in the Scoring Zone if it is partially within the three dimensional area defined by the infinite vertical projection of the Scoring Zone. a. A cube held by a robot in the scoring zone counts as a score. b. A cube held on top of a high-rise is not considered a score at that height.

2 Head-to-Head Competition 1. Two teams will compete head to head using 36 red (12) white (12) and blue (12) blocks 2. Each match will be four minutes in length with drivers switching every minute. Teams with 3 drivers must designate a driver to go two times (first and last). 3. The score is counted at the end of each round, after all Cubes and Robots come to rest. The team s final score will be calculated the same way as in the qualifier. 4. A team must have at least two (1) high-rise to score any points. 5. Team Members are not allowed to interact or interfere with the robots or balls in any way. 6. Each Cube Scored in the Scoring Zone in the correct color is worth a point value equal to the High-rise Height of the same color as the Cube. 7. 8. Teams are not allowed to drive over or into the other team s scoring zone. Robtos will be deducted 1 point for each second their robot is on the opposing team s scoring area. Any high-rises that get knocked down will count DOUBLE for the nonoffending team. 9. Robots are allowed minimal contact when outside of the scoring area trying to retrieve blocks. 3 Robot Construction 1. Robot construction is limited to the Robot Components from the VEX kits provided in class. a. The packaging, manuals, balls and other non-robot components from this kit are NOT allowed. b. Teams can utilize the individual sub-components from these kits so long as they do not use more parts than are available equally to all of the other groups.
