1 Editor: Peter Brown : administrator@perdiswellparkgolfclub.co.uk Assistant Editor: Chris Williams : chris@shadowcleaning.co.uk CLUB NEWS NOVEMBER and w ww.perdiswellparkgolfclub.co.uk YOUR MONTHLY NEWSLETTER ISSUE 20 Live Leaderboard Finally Goes LIVE On Monday 2nd October the long awaited Live Leaderboard feature was finally installed in the Clubhouse. Offering a variety of live information, much of it controlled by us here at the Club, it's main feature is exactly 'what it says on the tin!!', a professional looking live score feed directly from the PSI screen, through How Did I Do and onto our new big screen TV. Currently the Leaderboard display, which is on the right side of the screen, shows both net and gross scores for all players as they are entered onto the PSI system in the Pro Shop. When no competition is in progress the 'leaderboard' shows previous results, current player handicaps and various other images etc on the left side of the screen as well as live News feeds from events around the World. As we get accustomed to its setting up and use and 'play' with our own images please look out for global news items from the Club all part of trying to provide as many communication outlets as possible for our Members and visitors. It has taken a few months to purchase and install this great piece of technology while the Committee, once given the goahead from Members, investigated the potential and feasibility of the equipment together with trying to optimise up-front and on-going costs to get the most benefit and best terms for our Members. Prior to purchase you may have been aware that on most Saturdays we displayed on the TV most of the score inputs from a laptop computer just to whet the Members' appetites this exercise was widely appreciated and was final proof that the equipment was something that would further improve the total golfing experience here at Ravenmeadow Golf Centre. 3 Wed 20th Ladies 18 Hole Stableford Mary Finn (24) 34 points Sat 23rd Foursomes John Fogwill & Steve Williams (13) net 66 Update On Club Shirts Know Your Club Member The Club shirts currently in use (black with white detail) will continue to be used as Club 'uniform' for the 2018 season. So, who's this then? Whenever possible, players selected to represent the Club, all sections, will be entitled to a small levy from the Club in the form of a 15 discount, at the time of purchase, on the normal cost price. John Fogwill & Steve Williams Winners Foursomes Wed 27th Charity Cup Dick Cumming (27) net 64 However, in order to Standardise procedure throughout the various sections, all players representing the Club will be expected to pay 1 per game to the Club through the Team Captain on the day. We trust you agree that this is a fair arrangement for all concerned and goes some way towards alleviating what has been a considerable annual drain on Club resources. (Historically, the 1 Club levy has been in use for anyone playing for the Handicap League Team and it is only fair that this be applied as a Club 'standard' from now on.) It is also envisaged that Club shirts/colours will only be changed when felt necessary rather than annually as has been the case in recent years. Dick Cumming Winner Charity Cup Sat 13th Summer League Rnd 6 of 7 Mike Sanders (25) net 63 Know Your Course Which hole is this? Not Really The Way To Win!! This year's Sheila Huggins Memorial Shield came to a somewhat unsavoury conclusion when the Competition was won on a final day concession. This is not what we want to see at R&PPGC! When the competition schedule is compiled ahead of each new golfing season the knock-out style competitions are normally laid out with all the relevant dates when each round and the final are to be played. The Competition organiser will always allow more than sufficient time for players to make arrangements to play their matches. When entering such knock-out events please be sure to make yourself aware of all the due dates so that we avoid recurrences of similar unacceptable situations. 4 A Note Regarding 'Non-Standard' Competitions Most of our Competition schedule comprises reasonably straight-forward golfing formats which cause little or no concern when it comes to the scoring regime on the day of play. Most know and understand, Stoke Play, Stableford, Match Play etc and everything goes smoothly. However, in order to add a little bit of interest now and again, a few 'fun' competitions usually get scheduled and these generally are non-qualifying events that required some 'tweaking' of the way the games are played and scored. When such competitions are entered onto the PSI system the scoring / playing regime is also entered and (eventually) appears on the printed start sheet generated on the day of the Competition. Please note that this additional information cannot be transferred onto the final draw sheet within the How Did I Do website as the PSI system is designed to cater for 'standard' competition regimes and a few other 'fun', less-standard formats but it is simply not allencompassing (and nor should we expect it to be!!). So, in the event of a 'fun' type game or a 'modified' format players should, quite rightly, be made aware of what to expect, how to play and how to score. The Committee will always endeavour to make such information available prior to such an event. To this end, ahead of the golfing year', our Handicap Secretary 'composed' a very wordy but comprehensive 'COMPETITION GUIDE' which provides all relevant details for every Competition in the year's schedule. This document was issued at the start of this season and was posted on our main website from where it can be viewed and/or downloaded. Said document is also available on the notice boards in the locker rooms. One such 'fun' event recently caused a bit of a upset as it was felt that the playing / scoring regime was not made available until the evening prior to the competition. The Captains Stableford on 11 th October was eventually re-modified back to a standard Stableford format and went ahead on that basis. However, it should be noted that all the relevant information was provided in the aforementioned document and was not, as some Members believed, changed at the eleventh hour! If any error in communication had taken place it is fair to say that perhaps the Competition could have been designated as 'Captains Modified Stableford' which would have at least forewarned entrants that there would be some unusual playing and/or scoring required under the term 'modified'. Although our 'COMPETITION GUIDE' clearly presents the regime for all to see, the Committee also recognises that the event could have been more clearly titled for clarification which would have allowed entrants to inquire about said 'modified' status. The Committee apologises for any disruption or misunderstanding that ensued from this omission and have also taken the issue on board so that it shouldn't happen again hopefully!! We hope this clears up any misunderstanding but, please, take time out to refer to the 'COMPETITION GUIDE' or, if in doubt ASK. Thank you - The Committee 2017 Presentation Evening It's almost upon us folks! This is your final reminder!! When : Dress Code : better!) 5 Martin Hucker Co-opted As a reminder this means : Lift, Clean & Place "Winter Rules" At the Committee Meeting held in October it was unanimously agreed to support Jan Schutte's proposal to co-opt Martin Hucker on to the Management Committee as a Coopted Member with immediate effect. Martin has been Jan Schutte's (unofficial) Seniors' Vice Captain this year and carried out many of the required duties at times when Jan has been unable to fulfil his regular role due to injury etc. We welcome Martin who will bring a new 'voice' to proceedings and act in Jan's stead when required. Seniors' Roll-Up Please note that the (unofficial) Tuesday morning Seniors' Roll-up 'knock' now nominally tees off at 0928 hrs with balls drawn for playing order at approximately 0915 hrs. The start time is not guaranteed, as it is subject to booking availability, and may slip up or down as dictated by Pro Shop bookings so get there early you 'oldies' to make sure you are 'in the draw'. Winter Rules OK You will probably be aware by now that Winter Rules were Introduced with effect from 16th October : A ball lying on a CLOSELY MOWN AREA through the green only may be lifted, without penalty, and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, they must place it on a spot within 6 inches of where it originally lay, not nearer the hole, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. A player may place his ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed (Rule 20-4). If the ball fails to come to rest on the spot on which it is placed, Rule 20-3d applies. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and it subsequently moves, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply. If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, they incur a penalty of one stroke. Note: "Closely-mown area" means any area of the course cut to fairway height or less, including paths through the rough. Relief for an embedded ball "through the green" Through the green, a ball that is embedded in it s own pitch-mark in the ground may be lifted, cleaned and DROPPED, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped should strike a part of the course through the green. Protective Staked Ropes Around The Greens If a ball strikes any part of a protective staked rope around a green on the hole being played, the player MAY disregard that stroke, abandon the ball and play another ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was played in accordance with Rule 20-5 (Playing Next Stroke from Where Previous Stroke Played). Use of the word "may" provides the player, if their ball strikes any part of the rope and/or stakes, with the option of either continuing to play their ball as it lies or taking free relief by abandoning the ball and playing another ball from the same spot. Temporary Greens When temporary greens are in play the normal greens should be considered as GUR from which play is prohibited and a ball resting on or touching the green should be lifted and dropped off the green, not nearer the hole, in accordance with Rule 251b. The same rule will apply to designated Temporary Greens if the normal greens are in play. Such relief must be taken when a ball lies on or touches the "condition" or when the "condition" interferes with the player's stance or the area of his intended swing. Rule 25-1B specifies that the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club length of the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. When the ball is dropped, the ball must first strike a part of the course off the temporary green. Note: A ball is "embedded" when it is in it s own pitch-mark and part of the ball is below the level of the ground. A ball does not necessarily have to touch the soil to be embedded. Note : All Local Rules are displayed on our main website and on the Notice Boards in the Locker Rooms. Note: "Through the green" means the whole area of the course except for the teeing ground, putting green of the hole being played and all hazards on the course. It has been agreed that during the winter months (29th October onwards) the first tee time on Competition days will be 8.30 due to restricted light in the mornings. 5 Winter Competition Times

6 From T.A. To M.B.E. But Who? In my quest to dig up some interesting Members' 'back stories' I recently happened upon a really interesting snippet and checked it out. Mario's Dilemma Mario Leo s lie after his second shot on the 12th. Forked if I know what club to use next!" We have a few Members who consider themselves 'decorators' but we also have one who has genuinely been DECORATED with an MBE!! Not known to be a shy and retiring golfer, he didn't earn his reward from his golfing abilities. Neither did he get it for his comedic wit, sharp tongue or friendly disposition. This enigmatic 'personality' is not usually known for his modesty but although he is entitled to add MBE after his name he chooses not to and generally doesn't talk about it either. The Member concerned is very modest about his 'Gong' and why he was awarded it. But I did manage to glean a very small insight about the Gentleman who served in the Territorial Army for thirty-odd years, a Major no less! Now obviously I know the identity of our 'lauded' friend and there are a few of his closer golfing buddies who know his 'story' but you, the reader, will have do your own investigating. In the meantime, I shall continue to dig and delve (well pester anyway) to try and encourage our VIP to put pen to paper and share his story with us. Competition Score Input (when numbers just don't add up!) Please note that it is important that all competition score cards are returned and scores input into the PSI system for every competitive round played. Failure to input scores and return cards can result in incorrect handicap updates as well as resulting in unbalanced numbers when issuing prize 'vouchers'. It you've had a 'bad 'un' just return an NR on PSI and pop the card in the box as you would if you'd had a 'good 'un'! So, what club did Mario choose? Was it his Tree Wood or did he go for a Four(k) Iron? Whatever, if he got out of there he should, henceforth, be known as SUPER MARIO. Thanks to Pat Griffin for this. Thank you. 6

9 Know Your Course Answer It's hole 16 Baylis Pairs Cup Sunday 22nd October saw the first ever Final of the new Baylis Pairs Cup, a two-stage tournament which commenced with 28 pairs split into four Groups each playing RoundRobin matches, before moving on to a knock-out stage. Below, Club Captain Stephen Baylis (centre) proudly displays his prestigious Cup to the two Final day pairings, on the left Tommy Hayes & Richard Higgs and, on the right, John Griffiths and Ade Day. & Richard Palfrey, 1up against Steve Wiggin & Mick Boylan, 4&2 versus Steve Bellinger & Dave Whyte and 4&2 versus Geoff Jones & Dave Hancocks. A 3&1 loss to Mark Purser & Jamie Newton and an all-square match with Steve Williams & Chris Williams left Hayes & Higgs finishing their early matches with a total of 9 out of a possible 12 points. The first knock-out round, the Quarter Finals, draw once more pitted Hayes & Higgs against the Williams brothers who they eventually beat on the 19th hole. In their Semi-Final match they knocked out Ed Nicklin & Joe Jackson 4&3 and found themselves in the Final and up against Day & Griffiths who had also finished second in their Group with 9 points after beating Rob Griffiths & Simeon Chapman 1up, Luke Gibbs & Dave Phillips 2&1, Ron Law & Roger Jones 4&3.Their match against Mark Keeling & Bob Wood was conceded and they finished All Square against Norman Vernalls & Mick Huggins. They trhen went on to take out Scott Thomas & Mike Sanders 5&3 in the quarters and Barrie Hope & Stephen Baylis 1up in the Semi's. Lease & Course Update Hayes & Higgs found themselves finishing second in their Group after winning 3&2 against Julian Bateman Since my last note I was hoping to report that the long-term lease for the land at Perdiswell would have been signed and all finished. Unfortunately, this is not the case! There have been 9 some delays in the drafting of the required documents which has meant an extension to the short-term lease. I am expecting to have the full lease signed by the end of the year, but until then we will operate under the terms of the short-term lease. Although, under the short-term lease, the land continues to be public open space, I am pleased that we are now able to maintain the land ourselves. To that end we have appointed a new greenkeeper, Scott Thomas, to bolster forces! I hope you will agree that the greens are already beginning to play better, and the consistency will only continue to improve. We have started to cut the fairways in a similar way and as the grass grows we are hoping to see a consistent height throughout the course. We will continue to work toward bringing the course together, with the changing of tee markers, fairway distance markers etc. The continual problem of walkers and particularly dogs on the course, at the moment, remains one we cannot do anything about. Once the long-term lease is signed we will be able to ask people to keep off the course and stick to the paths. I am assured by the council that the paths will be clearly defined and maintained so that walking them is an obvious route. Adequate dog litter bins will be provided and hopefully, over time, the problem will be less and less. Until then status quo remains. We are planning some works for the course through the winter, including some drainage works. With the skills recruited with our new green keeper I am hoping to be able to carry out some infrastructure works to paths and perhaps the course as well. As part of the long term deal we are getting some machinery which will allow us to work on building a fleet suitable for all jobs necessary including the continuation of important aeration works we have been carrying out over the last couple of years. We are all looking forward to finally getting our teeth stuck into the course as an 18 holer.exciting times ahead. James Leaver
