the editor speaks This March marks the 17th birthday of NSRCC, which was officially opened on 13 March This issue, we take some time to reflect on the club s journey since opening. Some of you have been members of the club since opening. We want to thank you for your support and for being a loyal members all this while and sharing with us the journey so far. Over the course of these 17 years, the club has seen many changes and developments which have added value to members. These include building a new golf course at Kranji, upgrading of the golf courses at Changi, major upgrading to the beachfront bungalows and clubhouse, and most recently the relaunch of the sea sports centre. All these gave club members access to more and better facilities. Members have given us their positive feedback and appreciation of the various upgrading. We are grateful for the positive response and the encouragement that members value these improvements and developments. All these improvements were done at significant costs to the club. Fortunately, the club has been prudent in its management of resources and has been able to build up reserves in past years to re-invest in the club for the benefit of members. And all these developments were done with as little impact on the membership base as possible, including refraining from increasing fees even despite the rising costs over the past 17 years. However, as a self-sustaining club and to continue building new facilities and upgrading existing ones, the tide of rising costs poses many challenges. At the recent President s Trophy held in Jan, LG Neo Kian Hong, Chief of Defence Force/President, NSRCC made his inaugural President s address to members. He cited some of the challenges the club face moving ahead. These include rising costs of irrigation water and electricity tariffs. Currently, the club management is looking at various options to sustain long-term water needs. While it would continue to manage its resources carefully to continue providing members with great service and facilities, the external challenges such as inflationary pressures, are in reality not within its control. In January, our newly revamped sea sports centre hosted the Asian Windsurfing Championship where many windsurfers of international standing competed. It was an exciting weekend for members who had a chance to witness a event of such status at their home club. Many members took the opportunity to spend some time with their families at the sea sports centre, dining al fresco at the restaurants or just having a simple drink or picnic while catching some action. The NSRCC management and its partners would continue to work towards bringing more such exciting events and activities closer home to members. Lawrence Goh Eng Yau Honorary Editor

updates Observe Earth Hour 2011 NSRCC would like to invite staff, members and guests of the club to observe Earth Hour on Sat, 26 March between 8.30pm to 9.30pm by turning off the lights for an hour on that night, and refrain from using electricity as much as possible whether at home or at the club. During Earth Hour, we would turn off our club s building perimeter lights as well as lights at the carpark. This is an initiative by the club to join hands with like-minded organizations around the world to help conserve the world s resources in an event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and help fight against climate change. Your Rewards for Going Green In the past 6 months, many NSRCC members took up our challenge to go green by opting to receive only the electronic copy of the monthly statement of accounts. Here are the results of the lucky draw for those who have opted to give up the hard copy of the monthly statement. Congratulations to member, Marcus Teo on winning a Asus Net Book from NSRCC e-statement opt-out promotion who had this to say after collecting his prize: Don t kill the trees! Members who registered to opt-out of receiving mailed paper statements between June 2010 and January 2011 were eligible for the lucky draw. Marcus name was randomly picked from all of the eligible entries. Choose to Go Green Too! Through this initiative, NSRCC is showing its commitment to reduce the use of paper. Each month the club mails out more than 10,000 sheets of paper and envelopes to members to update them of their monthly statement. This translates to many, many trees in a year. Opting for the e-statement of account gives members timely and easily retrievable information on the status of their accounts, and save many more trees in the process. At the same time, you can also opt out of this hard copy of newsletter by writing to corpcomms@nsrcc.com.sg as the pdf copy is also available to read online or for download at our club website. resort view 04 1st prize winner, Marcus Teo 2nd prize winner, Tan Kwong Cheng Be environmentally friendly, you save cost and go green! 7 updates SAFRA Resort Bowl Upgrading Lanes SAFRA Resort Bowl will close all 20 lanes for upgrading project from 3 May to 31 May. The new synthetic lanes are scheduled to be reopened on 1 June. Members will notice a new lane surface and a better bowling experience when the renovations are completed. The CAFÉ, Karaoke rooms, Games Arcade and Pool tables are not affected and will remain open. The management would like to assure that it will make every effort to minimise noise and disturbance. This temporary inconvenience is aimed at providing even better service and experience to you in future. Held from 28 November to 23 December last year, the NSRCC Youth Selection Roll-Off is an annual event which aims to develop and nurture young talents aged between 10 to 19 years of age to greater heights in the sport. In this selection, participants had to bowl a 12-game series and were put to test when they had to bowl 6 games of short oil and long oil patterns each. This allowed the bowlers to learn how to adapt and react to the different lane conditions. NSRCC Youth Selection Roll-Off The selected 28 bowlers will go through a regime of weekly in-house bowling training for a period of ten months conducted by NSRCC s resident coach, Remy Ong and assistant head coach, Sam Goh. They will also have an opportunity to represent NSRCC in the annual Inter-Club Youth Mixed Bowling League 2011 as well as other regional bowling leagues and international tournaments organised by the Singapore Bowling Federation. Visit our website at to find out the full list of bowlers selected to represent NSRCC s Swimming Pool Closure The swimming pool will be closed from Monday, 9 to Wednesday, 11 May 2011 for pool maintenance. It will resume operation on Thursday, 12 May resort view 05

seen & heard Royal Pirates The Gathering The NSRCC Year End Party Countdown last year was a huge hit as it saw more than 200 members and guests, dressed in their best pirate-themed outfits coming out to bid adieu to 2010 and greet the New Year with a bang! Specially themed The Royal Pirates Gathering, the annual party was graced by Comr Peter Lim, Commissioner of the Singapore Civil Defence Force/Vice-President of NSRCC. Many guests arrived early, resplendent in their pirate costumes and eager to seize the many photo-op sessions taking place. Ladies came in their shimmering dresses, chiffon frocks and dazzling togas and many gentlemen came with the indispensable oneeye patches. It truly felt as if we were experiencing some pirate adventure on the high seas! And what s the high seas without some refreshments? The cocktail reception was also a big draw as members milled around, with drinks in hand while waiting for their turns at the phototaking sessions or having key chains made specially for the occasion. The evening s line-up included fun stage games and a lively emcee whose infectious energy and witty repartee kept the crowd entertained all night long. Live band, The Evergreens was also on hand to lend the party an even festive atmosphere. One of the highlights of the night was definitely the impressive and fiery fire-eating performance by Asia s Face of Fire Showdown. Another big highlight, of course, was the lucky draw and finding out who gets to walk away with the $500 cash prize for Best Dressed. Congratulations to all the winners! resort view 06 One of the main highlights of the night - Asia s Face of Fire Showdown (L-R) Stanley Ho (Manager, Resort); Seah Chin Aik (Chairman, Resort & Facilities Committee); Comr Peter Lim (Commissioner of Singapore Civil Defence Force/Vice-President, NSRCC); COL (NS) Dennis Ng (GM, NSRCC)

In terms of this and the venue, there aren t any issues to prevent it from hosting windsurfing world championships. On the future of the sport, Mr Teo said he was heartened by the recent successes of local windsurfers performance at last year s Youth Olympic and he had this to say about the sport I m happy that windsurfing is coming back up. resort view 08 NSRCC has always provided premier golf and country club facilities for NSmen. 15 front page President s Trophy 2011 Extracts of LG Neo Kian Hong s Speech Delivered During Dinner LG Neo Kian Hong, Chief of Defence Force/President of NSRCC delivered his inaugural speech to members at the recent President s Trophy tournament. Here are some highlights of his speech. Recent Improvements to the Club: The Sea Sports Centre closed for a few months last year and underwent a major revamp. We are delighted that it is now fully operational and adds to the already wide range of facilities that we offer to members of NSRCC. The re-launch of the Sea Sports Centre is a significant milestone for the club. The centre now offers rare alfresco sea-front dining opportunities for members, serving up both Alfresco and Indonesian cuisines. In the same month, we launched our new club website and also introduced our first monthly electronic newsletter called RV Connect so that we can better connect with our members. While it s the first stage of our enhancement, the revised website does provide easily access and it also features an on-line version of the club newsletter; and allows members to download photos taken during club events. Survey on Member s Satisfaction Levels Our annual membership survey this year showed that 93% of members expressed satisfaction with the club services and facilities, an improvement from last year s satisfaction rating of 91%. The condition of our golf courses at Changi and Kranji, as well as our beachfront bungalows, continue to receive very good ratings from members. Challenges Facing the Club Moving ahead, the NSRCC s team and I would take on the issues facing the club pro-actively so that members interests are take care of. Managing a resort with golf facilities has its challenges. Since April last year, NSRCC has to pay for the use of water to irrigate our golf courses at Changi. In the past, we could use the effluent water from Bedok Sewerage Plant without any charges. With this change in policy by PUB, the cost of water is likely to increase further in the future, when the current contract expires. We are currently examining our options, and are studying various irrigation water alternatives to solve this issue on a long-term basis. The electricity tariffs have also increased significantly last year translating into higher business costs. NSRCC would like to assure members that we will work harder at managing these costs carefully to continue to providing members with good experiences at the club. Members Response to President s Speech I believe the club has managed its operational costs tightly over the years. As such, it has been able to keep the club s pricing very competitive. However, prices have indeed increased over the years - from electricity tariffs, water to petrol. With these increases, there would come a time when the club cannot sustain this anymore and a fee revision is inevitable. I guess the most important aspect of this is that the club continues to work towards increasing the value of the membership and members benefits despite the increase in fees. As long as the value is returned to members, I guess that is what matters most. Andrew Kwa As a member, I am delighted with the re-launch of the Sea Sport Centre. Apart from its wide range of sea sport activities, the sea front alfresco dining is quite an experience with its charming and scenic environment, especially during sunset. I am also happy with the new website and the new RV Ronnect so that members can have quicker updates and access to Club s information and activities. I believe with the recent PUB policy changes on water supply, we are now task with the search for a suitable solution to solve this issue on a long-term basis. Inevitably, whatever solution we can think of, there will be a tremendous increase in water cost. Apart from this water cost increase, the cost of electricity and petrol/ diesel have also gone up. But for many years, NSRCC have managed to maintain its fee and various charges to its member. As NSRCC is a self-sustaining club and in view of the rising operating cost, I believe a possible price hike is inevitable in order for NSRCC to sustain and to provide quality club facilities at competitive prices for its members. - Seah Chin Aik resort view 13

contest giveaway Wonderful Looks Back on 17NSRCC Years NSRCC - Making Golf Accessible to Many This month, NSRCC turns 17 years old. We were officially opened on 13 March The opening of NSRCC then signified a milestone for NSmen and the golfing fraternity. For the first time, golf was accessible to NSmen at a very affordable price. It marked a major turning point in the local golfing landscape as golfing was now accessible not just to the exclusive few. Added Value of Membership Over The Years Over the past 17 years, NSRCC continued its mission to provide premier yet affordable resort and golfing facilities for NSmen and their families. Many facilities and services were added over the years to increase the value of the club membership to keep up with the rising aspirations and expectations of members. Now, members get to enjoy access to two golf clubs for just the price of one and even get to enjoy a newly revamped sea sports centre at one of the most serene corners of Singapore. Prudent Management Made This Possible But Challenges In The Horizon NSRCC is a self-sustaining club and it needs to keep itself financially liable in order to sustain its operations and accummulate sufficient reserves to re-invest in upgrading the club facilities and services to benefit members. All the improvement in the past were possible as the club management has been prudent with resources and managed to build up sufficient reserves in past years to invest in such developments. We hope to be able to continue improving the club for members. However, as with all businesses, NSRCC also face inflationary pressures. Some of the challenges we face in future include increases in critical core services such as water. Since April last year, NSRCC had to pay an increase of $200,000 per year on water for irrigating the golf courses due to a change in government water management policy. The club also has to pay for higher electricity tariffs. Despite these higher operating and maintenance costs the resort is committed to build up on capital reserve to fund future upgrading projects to provide our members with the highest level of services and value for money. We hope members will stay with us and provide us with suggestions on ways to further improve the club s offerings thus enhancing the value of your membership. We would continue to manage our resources prudently to give members the best value, as much as is practically possible. We look back now at some of the major development over the past 17 years that has added value to your membership and which has been among the changes that has been most well-received by members. resort view 14

live well, eat well We have just embarked on the year of the Rabbit. Just as the rabbit hops up and down, so does the market. So do you buy and hold or try to take advantage of market cycles? Our guest writer Dennis Ng shares his personal experience. Make Market Cycles Work for You Market Booms and Busts Observing nature, we will notice cycles. Similarly in the financial markets, there are market cycles where busts follow booms and vice versa. That is why the party ended with a market crash in year 2008, after global stock prices shot up by between 200 and 500 per cent in the last four years. According to historical analysis, 2008 was one of the worst years for stocks since For many, this might be depressing news but for me, this is exciting news, which helped me decide to buy stocks after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in Sep And as a result of buying low, my stock portfolio has risen in value by over 50% in the last 2 years. I would say that in the short term, it is difficult to time the market correctly on a consistent basis. However, it is definitely possible to roughly estimate at which stage of the market cycle we are in. For instance, in 2007, the stock market was in its fourth bullish year. Back then, the Straits Times Index (STI) had risen about 200 per cent from a low of 1,226 in March 2003 to over 3,600 points. As far as I remember, the Singapore stock market has never had a bull market that lasted more than five years. Believing back then that we were near the tail end of a bull market, I sold most of my stocks and avoided the market carnage that followed a few months after that. resort view 16 The Steps to Market Cycle Investing are Simple. First, we try to estimate at which stage of the market cycle we are in.

live well, eat well Secondly, we try to identify the major trend direction - upwards or downwards. Finally, we position ourselves accordingly; basically, the strategy to take is to go with the trend instead of going against the trend. For instance, if you bought stocks during 2004 when the stock market was on an uptrend, it was easy to make money since most stocks were moving up in price. However, when stock markets were in retreat last year, it was very difficult to avoid losing money on stocks, simply because most stocks fell in price in accordance with the general market direction. Buy and Hold the Only Way? Some people firmly believe in the buy and hold strategy, holding on to their stocks through thick and thin, whether the stock market is moving up or down. I used to be one of them until I realised I lost out on a lot of opportunities by not selling out when markets were high and buying back again when markets were low. We do have to be mindful of opportunity costs. In the last bear market from March 2000 to March 2003, I also observed that when the tide turned, almost all stock prices went down, including blue chips. Let me give an example: DBS Group Holdings share price was as low as $8 in 2003; it hovered between $8 and $10 for close to one year. If you practised market cycle investing, and even if you had missed the bottom, you could have easily bought the bank s shares at about $10. In 2007, after four years of bull runs, DBS share price shot up to as high as $25 and hovered between $20 and $25 for more than one year. Again, even if you missed the top, you could have easily sold DBS shares when the price was about $20. By buying at $10 and selling at $20, you would have easily pocketed a 100 per cent return over four years. Not bad at all. Similarly, by practising market cycle investing, after selling out at $20, and after one year of a bear market, you can now easily buy back DBS shares at less than $10 again. On the other hand, if you had bought DBS shares at $10 in 2003 and steadfastly held on to them through thick and thin, you would have basically enjoyed the roller-coaster ride of the market but would have no profits to show after five years. When Will Market Reach Its Depths? Of course, nobody knows when the market will bottom. My experience is that I was early and invested all my money by early However, I was one year too early as the Singapore stock market bottomed only in March Despite missing the bottom by 12 months, I still managed to achieve over 200 per cent in returns riding the four-year bull market that followed. According to the market cycle, the current bull market is now in its 2nd year as it started in March We are probably in late Spring or early Summer, temperature is likely to rise in year 2011 and the Singapore Straits Times Industrial Index might even set a new high, above 3,900 level set in year However, as prices move higher, you should become more cautious than more excited. As market peaks are typically followed by a crash in prices. About the Author Dennis Ng an accountant by training and a Certified Financial Planner with 18 years of experience in bank lending. 21 on par Charity Golf May Last year s Charity Golf was an extremely memorable occasion as the event not only managed to garner $500,000 for the five selected beneficiaries, it also saw two lucky participants walking away with the exclusive hole-in-one prizes a feat that has eluded Charity Golf participants for 8 long years. The funds that the Club managed to raise has helped to ease the burdens of worthy organisations such as Bright Vision Hospital, Canossaville Children s Homes, Spastic Children s Association of Singapore, The Children s Aid Society and SAF Benevolent Fund. This would not have been possible without the contributions from charitable sponsors and the generous support of the more than 600 golfers who registered for the event. This year, NSRCC will once again continue our efforts to help the less privileged and host the annual tournament on the 21 and 22 May this year. This will be the 16th time the Club is holding the event and we will be counting on your support and generosity to raise funds for the following beneficiaries: 1. Alzheimer s Disease Association 2. Society for the Physically Disabled 3. Down Syndrome Association of Singapore 4. Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation 5. SAF Benevolent Fund The tournament will be open to public, so gather your family and friends and join us in this worthy cause. Register at the Golf Reception or call to find out more. resort view 19

on par No Show Fee Members who booked a golf flight and wish to cancel should provide a notice of 72 hours before the scheduled time of play, failing which an administrative fee will be levied accordingly for each flight. No Chipping On the Green Please! Every golfer wants to put a green that is smooth and undamaged to give him the maximum control and enjoyment over his game. However, there has been an increasing number of divots and damages spotted on our greens recently. The main contributing factor is the use of irons on the greens by some golfers. These golfers use an iron, such as a chipping iron, on the green. This inevitably slices off the top layer of turf, damaging the green. This action spoils the surface of the green and definitely spoils the game for the rest of the golfers. Members are strongly reminded that the use of iron club to chip is strictly prohibited. This act causes damage to the turf and it takes time for the greens to heal to its original condition, upsetting the game for all golfers who play after you as they have to put over that rough patch. Please only use your putter on the green! Anyone who causes willful damage to the greens is subject to disciplinary action. Members have been suspended previously for damage to the greens. Just as you do not like putting over a damaged green, other golfers also do not enjoy facing such unnecessary unpleasantness during their game. If every golfer is mindful of this and use the proper club while on the green everyone can enjoy his round of golf. We would like to seek the cooperation of all golfers to refrain from the use of iron clubs to chip on the greens thus keeping our courses in the best possible condition to ensure all golfers can enjoy a pleasant game of golf. At the same time, do remember to repair any ball marks you make when you ball lands on the green. Carry a ball mark repair fork with you during all games! If you look closely, in the photos above, you can see the bare patch left in the greens. A simple 30 second fix at time of divot saves weeks of grass revitalization. resort view 20
