1 Activity News March 2019 Desert Sun ACTIVITIES Where Motion is the Lotion!
2 MARCH 2019 ACTIVITIES March ahead into spring; goodbye cold winter, hello spring, hello citrus tree blossoms & hello cactus blooms. Spring is in the air and there s no time like the present to get a spring in your step and get involved in March s many activities. After all, MOTION IS THE LOTION! Fire & Fall Prevention Report Tina says 87% of accidental death happens in our own home. What are your risks in the house and outside your home. Know your address including your condo number. Don t hinder your own care as every second counts sooo make sure your unit number can be seen. Number one cause of home fires is cooking. Stay in the kitchen and be focused. Attend to your cooking. If you go away from kitchen, take something from kitchen to remind you to return to kitchen. How about a spoon or a potholder! Fire needs heat, air and fuel to burn. Seniors & preschoolers are in the higher risk category because we move slower, can t hear, and take medications that make us drowsier. Kids will hide so remind them to Don t hide, go outside! Our sense of smell also changes so important to have an active, current smoke alarm in your rooms where you spend the most time in your homes. Smoke, which takes up the room s oxygen, is the real fire killer. Keep your bedroom door closed when you sleep. Be sure to get low in the room & be prepared to go out the window to your agreed upon meeting place if there s a fire. Consider wearing a medical alert so that fire department has access into your condo especially if you live alone. Falls: Stats say that 70% of people over the age of 75, who fall in their house will not return to their house & 70% will die within a year of the fall. Tips: Get rid of small non skid rugs. Light your travel pathways in the house. Put the File of Life magnet on your fridge. It holds your medical info. Be sure to keep it updated. Do you have a current fire extinguisher in your condo? Remember P.A.S.S.: Pull pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze trigger, Sweep area to remove an element of fire.
