2 January 2019 Activities January 2019 A New Year is upon us, this is a time of newly found happiness and a clean slate. A chance to learn from 2018 and make positive changes in your life. This is the year of the Pig a period of joy and relaxation. Let s get some joy by participating in some New Activities at Desert Sun. There will be fun times and you can be as busy as you want to be, just remember that you should never underestimate the importance of having FUN Sooo Get Playing! The first day of 2019 is chalk full of Activity options: Tuesday January 1st 7:30 am Polar Bear Plunge Jump into 2019 by cleansing your soul in our 4th Annual Polar Bear Swim in our chilly pool. There s nothing quite like it! Resolve to do it and make a big splash! New Year s Eve hats welcome. Tuesday January 1st 8 am Morning Stretch Every Tuesday & Thursday, you can start your morning with a little bending and stretching in this half hour class. Exercise will focus on reducing pain and increasing joint mobility, balance, and coordination. This class is a no impact, low key chance to achieve a greater range of motion, strengthen the spine and improve your posture. Sessions can be done standing or sitting. You just need to bring your desire to live well and pain free. Tuesday January 1st 8 am Pickleball Group Plays Monday - Saturday 8 am Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America! It is a fun paddle game for all ages. The game combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong. Come out and give it a try.you will be happily addicted! Paddles and balls are available in the box on the court by the pool. Be sure to wear runners & don t forget to bring some water! Pickleball is a game of placement so think and aim before you hit the ball!

3 Tuesday January 1st 9 am Water Exercises Every Monday to Saturday you can jump into this warm pool and exercise with a group of enthusiastic mermaids and mermen to the sounds of????? In the water, your joints will love you as there is no impact very invigorating. Tuesday January 1st 1 pm Every Tuesday- Clubhouse Line Dancing - Beginners Hee Haw...step behind step clap! Learn the Boot Scootin Boogie, Electric Slide or the Mambo #5. This is fun, fun, fun! No partners needed, super instruction, great music and cowboy moves. Step sequences are repeated each week so you will quickly learn how to dance with confidence and be able to venture out to Filly's or Cowboy Up for a dancing good time! Tuesday January 1st 1 pm Mens Cards Did you know there s a group of enthusiastic guys that play cards every day at 1pm in the Library? Well that s what they tell their wives. Drop by the card room to check out. Tuesday January 1st 3 pm Water Volleyball Monday - Saturday a wild bunch jump in the pool and hit a ball back and forth over the net to acquire 15 points. It s lotsa fun, much laughter and the wackiest game of volleyball you ve ever seen Desert Sun style. Tuesday January 1st 6:45 pm Bridge Every Tuesday & Thursday in the Library, several tables of Bridge playing takes place. This is a trick taking card game played by many tricky people. Come on out and learn to play. Don t forget to bring your quarter stakes are rather high!

4 Tuesdays & Saturdays - January 1st 7 pm Texas Hold Em Bring your $5, join a table of gamblin guys and gals for a fun night of taking chances on your cards. Beginners can join and be guided through the River or the the Blind en route to a handful of big bucks. Play will be every Tuesday and Saturday in December. Make your 5 dollars last till end of evening! Go home RICH! Wednesday January 2nd 8 am Blood Pressure 120/80 Wednesday January 2nd & 16th 8 am Blood Pressure Checkup Track your blood pressure numbers this season! Have your blood pressure taken by our own nurses Jan & Linda. They will keep you in check & let you know what those numbers mean. Strive to lower your blood pressure by playing big, being well & living happy! Come and get pumped up! Wednesday January 2nd 10 am Shuffleboard- Every Mon/Wed/Fri Come on down to our shuffle board courts and learn to play this fun strategic game with Bob Schmidt. Shuffleboard is a game in which players use cues to push weighted discs, sending them gliding down a narrow court, with the purpose of having them come to rest within a marked scoring area. It is also much fun knocking out your opponent. Wednesday January 2nd 10 am Card Room Quilting Join this group of ladies who will be working on different projects each week. Very creative, very fun! Find out at coffee what is happening for the week.

5 Wednesday, January 2nd Golf, Golf, Golf Mondays 11 am Sunland Springs 9 holes Wednesdays 10 am The Links 18 holes Fridays 10 am Apache Creek 18 holes Sign up in the clubhouse for a chance to golf with the fine floggers of Desert Sun or talk to Bill Tanner at Monday morning coffee. Remember, Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated! Wednesday January 2nd 7 pm Bingo This is the first Bingo of the year come and get LUCKY! Dob, Dob, Dob! B-I-N-G-O! Every Wednesday night you can gather in the Clubhouse to play a variety of Bingo games with our great callers. Be sure to buy a ticket for the 50/50 and be sure to play the extra coverall. Winning isn t everything, but wanting to win is! Be there for entertaining calls such as 22 or 66. Thursday January 3rd 4 pm Choir This group practices every Thursday and fills our Clubhouse with the joy of singing. New voices are always welcome. Thursday January 3rd 7 pm LIBRARY Dicey Nights - L/R/C $5 Let s shake things up a bit around Desert Sun. Each Thursday night in January will feature a different dice game of challenge & chance to earn a little cash $$$. LRC, Left-Right-Center is a very fast changing game of chance. No skill or decision making required.you will never know who is going to win until the very end. Sometimes the Pot grows pretty darn BIG. Lots of Laughs & Crazy Fun. Bring quarters to play!

6 Friday, January 4th 1-3 pm Pool Deck MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC Every Friday from 1-3 pm you can enjoy relaxing by the pool and listening to some great tunes. Sing along if you like or just simply relax. ENJOY! Music requests accepted for each week at Monday coffee. Friday, January 4th 4 pm Mini Golf App Social This is the social event of every Friday. Our mini golf course has some interesting challenges and interesting players too! Bring your friends, an appetizer, & or a bevy; be prepared to socialize around the fire table annnnd oh yes, play a round of nine if you like. Sometimes we even have a little tourney. Good times, great people! Friday January 4th & 18th 7 pm Library Bunco $5 Mark your calendar for 7 pm Friday, January 4th or 18th in the Library, because that is the evening that you could shake, shake, shake and win some cashola. We need 20 people to sign up for this popular social dice game. Come on out and meet your neighbours, have fun, laugh, and maybe go home a little richer! Snacks provided Bring your own bevy! Sign up early for this popular game! Friday January 4th 7 pm Card Room 500 or Pinochle Pinochle is card game for two or more players using a 48-card deck consisting of two of each card from nine to ace, the object being to score points for various combinations and to win tricks. 500 also called bid euchre, is a trick-taking card game that is an extension of euchre with some ideas from bridge. For two to six players, it is mostly played with two to six players. Don t know how to play either, come on out and learn.

7 Saturday January 5th 1 pm Xmas Decoration Take Down We need help! Here s your chance to volunteer some time and help us put away Christmas for another year. Trees, decorations and outdoor lights all need to be packaged away till next season. Your help would be greatly appreciated! Meet in the Clubhouse. Saturday January 5th Movie Night 7 pm Come and Enjoy a night out in Desert Sun s Clubhouse Theater watching a new movie every Saturday. This ain t no Harkins but it is good entertainment & a chance to kick back, relax & get lost in a great show. Upcoming weekly movies posted on Bulletin Board. Sunday January 6th 9:30am Chapel-Clubhouse Every Sunday Joe Sandles presides over our chapel group in the Clubhouse. This is a non denominational service where all are welcome. The choir will lead you in some of their beautifully selected hymns. Monday January 7th 7-8pm Card Room YOGA Anyone can do Yoga, regardless of age or fitness level. Every Monday evening, experience the fabulous benefits of yoga to help alleviate back pain, reduce stress, and increase flexibility. Learn 12 essential yoga postures in standing, sitting and laying down poses to increase your muscle tone, enhance your flexibility and enjoy relaxation. Floor back exercises will be included too. Wear loose fitting clothing, bring a mat or towel, water and prepare to work out in bare feet. Space is limited, must sign up each week!

8 Tuesday January 8th 9 am Clubhouse Desert Sun Board Meeting Attention Home Owners:..This will be the third meeting of our great Desert Sun Board. Hear what s happening around our Complex. Contribute & have your say. Meeting minutes are always posted on the Clubhouse Bulletin Board. If you d like your own copy of the minutes, contact Ogden Management Company. Wednesday, January 9th 8 am Goldfield Clean Up Hey Folks We don t wanna live in a trash can so let s do our duty and clean up our road. We need your volunteer help to clean up Desert Sun s adopted mile. Meet Clair Hanson in the Clubhouse where you will be armed with gloves, bags and vis vest to get the job done. Pickleball Beginner Lessons Wednesday January 9th Noon Sign up in the Clubhouse if you would like to learn how to play this fun game. In an hour learn how to serve, dink, score & play a game. If you can t make this time and still want lessons or would like to work on PB strategy contact Glenda Sharpe Condo #420 Thursday, January 10th 1 pm Activity Meeting Everyone is welcome to attend our monthly activity planning meeting. Our volunteer group plans, coordinates and hosts the many events and activities at Desert Sun. We are always open to new ideas and look forward to keeping you busy and entertained each month through out the winter. Presently we have openings for a couple new members on the committee. Come check us out. Here s your chance to give back to your community. Thursday, January 10th 7 pm $5 Dicey Nights 654 Let get 16 players together and play this fun game to earn the pot. Bring your quarters and get ready to roll a 6, a 5, a 4 with five dice, then get the highest score with the other two dice to win the round.

9 Monday, January 14th 2-4 pm FREE Pool Entertainment THE GOOD TIMES BAND will be here poolside at our monthly FREE poolside Happy Hour. Enjoy the sounds of country and rock & roll. You might even get to waltz or polka so don your dancing shoes & get ready to groove to their music. Bring your own appies and bevy to share with your table friends. Event will move inside if too chilly. Thursday, January 17th Noon Soup & Salad Lunch Why not try this luncheon on a cool Arizona Thursday. This is the best nutritious lunch ever! Every one s favourite recipes come out of the wood work to be shared with only those who sign up on the Clubhouse Bulletin Board. A warm belly is complemented by a wonderful salad and perhaps a delectable sweet. Do not miss this one! Thursday, January 17th 7 pm Library Dicey Nights - Horse Race Up to $10 for 8 Races Lots of laughter & good times will happen when you cheer for your horses by rolling their way through 8 races at the racetrack. This game combines dice and cards for some good gambling fun. Save all your nickels and dimes for this special dicey night. Sign up in the Clubhouse only 8 spaces available Friday, January 18th 7 pm $5 Bunco Second time this month you can get LUCKY playing this fun, social dice game. Sign up in the Clubhouse Monday, January 7th.

10 Saturday, January 19th 8 am $5 Pancake Breakfast Flip, Flap, Eat a FlapJack! It s breakfast time at the Clubhouse! Join Ed Walther s pancake crew for a scrumpy breaky of pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs, OJ, fresh fruit annnnnd coffee. This meal is way better than Denny s or the Waffle House. Did you know that the Canadians all put ketchup on their eggs & sausages? Try it EH! Sign up in the Clubhouse and don t forget to bring your own place setting! What a great start to the day! Saturday, January 19th 7 pm $25 The Duttons We ve got 51 tickets available for this fabulous family show in Mesa. Special guest appearance by singing group, The Fireflys. Sign up in Clubhouse to reserve a spot, then be sure to pay Cam at Monday morning coffee. Last day to buy is January 11th. Thursday, January 24th 8 am $15 Cliff Castle Casino Trip Enjoy this beautiful bus trip north through the Prescott National Forest to Camp Verde where you will have a day of casino slots, blackjack, poker & even BINGO. Your $15 ticket gives you $25 in free slot play! Lunch is also available. You must bring your Photo ID! Saturday, January 26th New & Used Sale 8 am Clubhouse Attention all you hoarders it is time to declutter and get rid of some of those things you ve squirrelled away and never use. Clean out your Condo! Your stuff could be someone else s treasures annnnd you could be richer$$$. Clothes, knick knacks, pictures, dishes, bikes, golf clubs, furniture etc will be great items for this event. If you d like to reserve a table, sign up in the Clubhouse costs only $2 for half table $4 full table. If you do not want to host a table, then you can always donate items to the Desert Sun Activity Committee table. We also need donated baked foods for the sale too!

11 Sloppy Joe Lunch $5 While shopping at the New & Used Sale, plan to settle in for a little lunch carefully cooked & hosted by Sloppy & Joe themselves delicious and so danged nutritious. Sunday, January 27th 9:30 am Hymn Sing Put the name of your favourite hymn in the basket under the clock 2 weeks before the 27th. You just might get to sing it on this special day. Sunday, January 27th Pickleball Dinkathon NOON This fun little tourney will be played entirely in the Kitchen. You have to be Thinkin Dinkin if you want to up your Pickleball skills. You will be dinking only, changing partners, semi ladder style. It s for FUN: all levels welcome but you need to sign up in the Clubhouse if you want to play! Monday, January 28th 11 am Best Shot Golf Tournament Shine up your favourite golf club & get ready to give it your best swing in the Best Shot Tourney. Even the Duffer s can win this one! Sign up in the Clubhouse $$$ Prizes awarded in DS Clubhouse after the tournament. For more info, contact Bill Tanner.

12 Thursday January 31st 7 pm Library Dicey Nights - Farkle $5 This will be the last Dicey Game of challenge, chance & risk this month. Farkle is played by two or more players, with each player in succession having a turn at throwing 6 dice. Each player's turn results in a score, and the scores for each player accumulate to some winning total (usually 10,000). We ve added a twist to make this game exciting and nail biting. Sign up in Clubhouse to learn to Play Farkle tonight. You need three $1 bills & $2 in quarters start saving! Puzzles Wanna keep your brain active? Drop by the Clubhouse anytime to put a piece of the puzzle together. There is always someone who will help you. Many different sizes and complicated ones are available. Warning: Very Addictive! Always Available for Your Use: In storage shed beside Mini Golf is Ladder Golf, Bean Bag Toss & Horseshoes. Also if you need to get rid of some frustrations, why not drive some golf balls into the golf cage. Ping Pong table is at backside of Clubhouse just waiting for a challenging rally too. Have you tried JENGA? See how high you can build the tower without it tumbling down! Yes, don t forget billiards and the exercise room Get busy! You have lots to do! Remember MOTION is the LOTION For Good Health!

13 DESERT SUN This section is chalked full of information, reminders, and important stuff! VOLUNTEERS Looking for a way to keep busy, contribute or serve your Desert Sun community?the following list of jobs or projects could use your help: 1.Pool Covering 2.Plant Covering 3.Sweeping leaves around curbs & rock areas 4.Coffee Morning- Emcees & Coffee Makers 5.Table/Chair setup & takedowns 6.Phone Directory 7.Vacuum Mini Golf course 8.Picking up fallen fruit 9.Crushing Cans Check in with Jill or Rob for other possible volunteer opportunities. Try Volunteering...it may be the most rewarding experience ever plus you'll meet some great people. FRUIT, FRUIT, FRUIT Let s make sure there is enough for everybody. Remember to only take what you can eat in one day. No bag fulls! Did you know that an Orange never bears a lime?

14 Fire Table Everyone is welcome to use the fire table located down by the Mini Golf Course. It is a great place to enjoy the warmth of a propane fire with your family and friends. We ask that you read the posted instruction for turning the fire on & off. Food should not be cooked over the flame; this decorative fire table is only for ambiance and your social enjoyment. Be sure to turn off the gas, return logs to bin when cool & re-cover the table too. Let Rob know if the tanks needs refilling. The 20 lb propane tank will last approximately 4-41/2 hours at a continuous burn at a moderate gas output. Enjoy! Singing around the fire is highly encouraged! Desert Sun T Shirts & Hats Get Fashionably Clad!You need to have one our Desert Sun T Shirts or great hats. Black Gildan 50/50cotton blend Tees are only $20. Collared blue or orange shirt polo shirts are $30. Hats come in 2 styles; $20 for either one. Lots of sizes available. Buy these items from Cinda Tanner at Monday morning coffee. Wear yours with Desert Sun Pride! TREATS DID I SAY ICE CREAM? The Activity Refrigerator in the Kitchen Clubhouse is full of yummy treats for your enjoyment whenever the craving hits like right now? This service operates on the Honor System so be sure to put your cold cash in the can inside the fridge. Enjoy ice cream, candy bars and soda. Why not treat all the people on the pool deck? Its never too cold for Ice Cream!

15 Recycle Activity Every day, All Day REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE Time to work harder at recycling put this reminder on your fridge *NO FOAM, NO PLASTIC BAGS, NO FOAM, NO PLASTIC BAGS in RECYCLE* Big Blue Recycle Bins Only: All broken down cardboard boxes and large paper containers. Plastic containers, tin cans, glass containers Newspapers, magazines and other paper products Juice boxes, milk cartons, plastic jugs, soap containers Pop cans and beer cans go in extra bins by our water station or in totes by your recycle bin. NO PLASTIC BOTTLES. Soda & Beer can refunds go towards your Activity Fund! By the way Thanks Can Crushers! Recycle for all it s Worth!

16 LIBRARY NEWS The Library is located in condo #505. The library door uses the same door code as the laundry room. There is no checkout necessary take, read, return the books to the bins located in the main book room on the floor of the west wall. All books are color coded by category: HISTORICAL MYSTERY NON FICTION NOVELS REFERENCE ROMANCE SPY AND WAR WESTERNS Light Green Red Pink Yellow Light Blue Green Blue Gold We have added about 20 more large print books to the library this December. The week of January 1, we are adding 3 new bookcases to the outer room where the large print books are housed. The Library welcomes your donations of gently used newer books. Donated books can be placed in the same bins as the book return bins. Clubhouse Furniture The Furniture Committee is updating our furniture and giving the Clubhouse a fresh look. You will see the look transform over the next few months & will find the Clubhouse to be welcoming, comfortable and an enjoyable place to visit and hang out.
