2 SEASON OUTLOOK With four seniors on the roster, the Fighting Illini women s golf team has experience on its side as it prepares for the spring season. Head coach Renee Slone looks to continue progressing the team in her second year at the helm. Success is expected in the upcoming season now that everyone is comfortable with one another and how Slone s system operates. We have gotten into a better routine this season, Slone said. The team knows my expectations, and everyone is comfortable with each other. After some inconsistencies at the beginning of the fall season, the Orange and Blue finished strong in the final two tournaments of the year with a runner-up finish at the Shootout at The Legends and a top-five finish at the Challenge at Wolfdancer. The Illini hope to carry this momentum into the spring after a long winter layoff. The girls continued to workout five days a week throughout the winter, and they each participated in various tournaments across the country to stay sharp. The new, state-of-the-art Demirjian Golf Facility also serves as an excellent training tool during the winter months. The indoor facility allows the Illini to practice their short game and continue improving their swing with the V1 Video equipment. It is great to have the Demirjian facility and never be forced to take a day off because of the weather, Slone said. Senior Seul Ki Park led the team as the top finisher at every fall tournament, ending the season with a teamlow stroke average. Park earned her second career tournament victory at the Shootout at the Legends, followed by a runner-up finish at the Challenge at Wolfdancer, the final fall tournament. She looks for her recent success to carry over into the spring season. Seul Ki has raised the bar, Slone said. She really stepped it up at the last two fall tournaments, so I look for that to continue. Her habits and attitude will rub off on the other team members. They see her success and want to partake in it as well. Several familiar faces will tee it up alongside Park during the spring. Senior captain Kristin Kallergis (80.00 fall stroke average) leads fellow seniors Stephanie Mory (78.33 fall stroke average) and Kristine Cook (78.87 fall stroke average) into their final season. Junior Nancy Featherstone and freshman Raquel Hopton round out this year s squad and look to gain even more experience. After a span of 128 days between tournaments, the Fighting Illini head to Florida to kick-off the season at the Gainesville Shootout III from March The Orange and Blue waste no time getting tournament experience as they head to Alabama for the Samford Women s Intercollegiate just two days later from March Slone is excited about these two opening tournaments, which the Illini have never participated in before. We have some great opportunities at the first couple of events to get the ball rolling, Slone said. We are playing in some good tournaments where we want to have solid finishes and try to pick up a win to start off the season. After last year s Illini Spring Classic was cancelled, Slone is looking forward to hosting her first home tournament, which she won three times as a player. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Illini s home course, Stone Greek Golf Club in Urbana on April 4-5. The 54-hole format is being used for the first time since 1991, instead of the 36-hole format, which has been used for most of the tournament s 32- year history. We play Stone Creek almost every day, Slone said. Having the tournament at our home course certainly provides us with an advantage over the other teams because we know it so well. If we have four consistent scores every round, I believe we can win the event. Illinois returns to the Indiana Invitational just two days after the Illini Spring Classic. The Orange and Blue finished third in last year s event, highlighted by Park s first career tournament victory. The Illini once again travel to Carmel, Ind. to play at the Crooked Stick Golf Course on April 7-8. Crooked Stick is a premier golf course, Slone said. It is also Kristine Cook s home course. Her insights proved to be extremely beneficial for the rest of the team at last year s tournament, which led us to one of Senior captain Kristin Kallergis eyes a strong finish to her career with a successful spring season. our best events of the year. The Illini will head to Columbus, Ohio for the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational from April It will be held at the Scarlet Golf Course, which Slone believes is one of the most stringent tests in college golf. This tournament will be the team s final preparation before the Big Ten Championship. Slone hopes to improve upon last year s sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, which will be hosted by Penn State from April We want to have four scores in the 70 s or lower every round, Slone said. If we do that, we are capable of finishing in the top five. The seniors definitely want to finish their college careers on a high note. A top-five performance in the Big Ten would be a big step for a program that continues to improve with time and has finished in the top five only once in the last 12 years. We are definitely heading in the right direction, Slone said.
