Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 3 SENIORS YEAR END REPORT Well here we are, at the back end of a very enjoyable year from my point of view as Captain, and looking forward with enthusiasm to another year of competitive and social golf. At this point I must ask all senior members both new and old to give their support to the new Captain, Bill Pirie, who will be coordinating all matters senior this year. Any other questions or queries can be directed to any committee member. I hope that the influx of new members this year will lead to a larger, more integrated and effective group of senior golfers and enable the selection, particularly of inter club matches being easier to administrate. I would like to thank all members who have supported me over the last twelve months, it has been a privilege to act as your captain and wish Bill a successful and happy year in post. There will be challenges surfacing over the next few months particularly over the subject of tee bookings but your new committee is working very hard on your behalf to enable our group to continue playing and socialising together. Not much else to report. Wishing you all a happy and enjoyable year!! Peter Halton A LOOK-ALIKE of Peter. Now he is a has-been the Captains hat will have to go!! Ed. PLAYING PARTNERS WANTED For new member MIKE HEMMINGS who is looking for Social Golf partners. Mike, whose handicap is 28, can be contacted on And now a departure from the usual stories with true accounts of church bulletins that have two meanings!!! Thank goodness for the church ladies with typewriters. These sentences are alleged to have actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services: The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water'. The sermon tonight: Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered

Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 4 CAPTAINS CHARITY FINAL REPORT During my year as Captain, my chosen charity was HOPE Against Cancer; a local independent Cancer Charity delivering research into cancers that are prevalent in Leicestershire and Rutland. At the Captains gala dinner in 2016 Miss Leicester- Megan Elliot was introduced by HOPE to support my fund raising efforts. During the year HOPE also introduced Sapphire Carter Miss Leicester Sportswoman to support fund raising and present prizes. How fitting therefore that as my Captaincy was running towards its end, Sapphire won the Miss Leicester competition on 24th March and was crowned by Megan Elliot. Sapphire who is 19 years old is currently undertaking a BTec in Dance and has several university auditions lined up as she further pursues her dream. Brian Watt Recently, the Captain handed over the Charity Cheque to Hope Against Cancer in the sum of This was received by Maisy Hobbs Miss Nottingham on behalf of the charity in the presence of Club President Dennis Lund and Richard Clarke a volunteer on behalf of Hope. Other sums were added to this to reach the total and whilst the publicity cheque was in the sum of 3100 a further 183 was added from the members fund, plus 470 from the charity collection boxes which have been deployed on the pro-shop and the bar. The Captains son Simon Watt raised an additional 350 running the Nottingham half marathon and this pushed the total to over Well done and thank you to all helpers and donors Best regards Brian Miss Leicester Miss Nottingham DID YOU KNOW There are at least 6 people in the world who look exactly like you!! People who laugh a lot are healthier than those who don t!! Laziness and inactivity kills just as many people as smoking!! Our body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to boil 3 pints of water!! A human brain has capacity to store 5 times as much information as Wikipedia!! Sleeping without a pillow reduces back pain and keeps your spine stronger!! Your shoes are the first thing people subconsciously notice about you, so-wear nice shoes!! You can survive without eating for weeks, but you will only live 11 days without sleeping!!

Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 5 INTREPID TRAVELLERS Eight Senior Golfers, including incoming Captain Peter Webb travelled to Vilamoura in Portugal for a high activity week of golf on top class courses. The weather was excellent until we played the top course THE VICTORIA where rain, horizontal hail and big winds were encountered. The group soldiered on but left the venue VERY grumpy!! After a hard days golf, the boys set out for an evening of hard drinking in their stretch limo. The Victoria (bad weather) course The clear overall winner with a massive accumulated Stableford score was Micky Moore, seen here enjoying a Portugal pud!! A FIRST FOR FOREST HILL From left to right Pete Webb, Kelly Naylor, Peter Maddock and Alan Greenhill (L&R Alliance Secretary) Pete Webb and Kelly Naylor (Captain and Lady Captain) became the first Forest Hill members to get their name on the coveted Rose Bowls presented by the Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Alliance. The Rose bowls, originally presented by the President and Vice President of the Alliance are awarded to the winners of the mixed Greensomes and were first presented in Pete and Kelly came in two over par gross with 43 points. John Spatcher ( also Forest Hill) and Annette Catermole. (Hinckley) were runners up with 39 points. The Rose Bowls were presented by Lutterworth Club Captain Peter Maddock. Some of our members are cleaning golf shoes in the Toilets. This is causing blockages. PLEASE DO NOT CLEAN your SHOES in the SINKS

Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 6 NEW STROKE INDEXES an attempt to explain and simplify A number of members have been surprised at the new stroke indices so you may want to see the strong recommendations from England Golf, the governing body of amateur golf in England which were used to determine the new indexes. You may want to test how well our indexes reflect these recommendations. Stroke Index is not determined on hole difficulty now there is a surprise but on ensuring that an equal distribution of strokes is given/received in match play strokes on individual holes don t really come into play in medals. There should be an even spread of strokes to be received over the 18 holes with odd numbered strokes on the more difficult nine holes that explains why we have even stroke indices on one nine and odd indices on the other nine. First and second stroke index holes (5 th and 15 th at Forest Hill) should be placed close to the centre of each nine. The first six strokes should not be allocated to adjacent holes and the 7 th to 10 th indices should be allocated so that a player receiving 10 strokes does not receive strokes on three consecutive holes. This is the point where your brain can start to hurt!!! The first 8 strokes should not be allocated to first or last hole - this avoids a player receiving an undue advantage on the 19th hole should a match continue to sudden death. Unless there is a very good reason stroke indices 9, 10, 11 and 12 should be allocated to holes 1, 9, 10 and 18. You may now want to lie down with a towel over your head!!! The sequence of stoke indices should if possible have the objective of reflecting varying playing difficulty thereby providing more equal opportunity for all handicaps, than an order based just upon length or difficulty. Thank goodness that we have such a diligent handicap team who are willing to spend time working all this out. RULING FOR CLEANING AND PLACING THE BALL FROM APRIL 1st. AT THE MOMENT WHEN PLAYING IN A QUALIFYING COMPETITION THE BALL CAN BE MARKED, CLEANED AND REPLACED ON CLOSELY MOWN AREAS (fairways). Any club stableford or medal must adhere to these rules until told otherwise. The same will apply to club competitions which are handicap qualifiers. If in doubt play your ball as it lies. As the weather improves it will not be long before there is NO picking and placing. you know the ruling before you play in qualifying competitions. Make sure

Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter LADIES ANNUAL DINNER The ladies held their Annual Dinner in mid March at the Club to say farewell to the current Lady Captain Joan Boot. There were 40 participating ladies and as usual a lot of frivolity took place with the Lady Captain and Vice Captain Kelly Naylor keeping the ladies in "stitches" with a couple of presentations. Fun and Frivolity was the general atmosphere of the night! Anyone in earshot were asked if they had a sensitive nature they may wish to cover their ears. A bouquet and was given to Joan from all the ladies, Joan has informed us she intends to buy a new putter with the money. Many thanks go to Angela, Charlotte and Rachel who coped very well with the demanding ladies. It s goodbye to Joan and hello to Kel Page 7

Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 8 There is an opportunity for players under 35 to play in a County Scratch knockout competition. There is also an Under 35's scratch league teams of 8 are required for this. If you are interested in either event please contact Captain Peter Webb by replying to this as soon as possible. Make sure you get your entries in before the deadlines. These are usually the Sunday before the competition in order that a draw can be made. In some cases late entries are allowed at the discretion of the Captain. The Scratch (A Team) and B Team are always looking to recruit new players, please sign up on the sheets provided on the relevant notice boards if you are interested. 9 Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter Page 9 Macmillan's Nursing Captains Charity 2016/2017 If you have an idea for fundraising for Macmillan's please get in touch with me and I will do everything I can to help you get your project underway. Some people already have plans in place and we will keep you informed of these via the Newsletter. We will do our best to organise sponsorship and will probably be able to supply you with tee shirts, balloons, bunting and banners. If you have items suitable for raffle prizes please let me know and I will arrange a place where you can leave them at the club. What caused this disturbance in the pond on the ninth /tenth hole? Seriously, I am planning to do a 1 mile It appears the captain lost a pro v1 during his AMAM "That pro round vi is and in here being somewhere" the person he is it had to be retrieved at all costs. open water swim at Windermere on June 11th. You will find a form on the notice board. If you would like to sponsor me please complete the form and I will collect the money on completion of the swim. There are collecting tins on the bar, any small change you get from drinks, food or some just lying around in your pockets will be gratefully accepted. Or,... you can go to my justgiving page I would like to think that we could charge a years subscription for using the Captains bunker!! I'm going to suggest however that 2 would be a fair price so when you are next at the bar put you money in one of the collecting tins and your conscience will be clear for the rest of the year. Pete Webb More ministerial notices Weight Watchers will meet at 7pm. Please use the large double doors at the side entrance!!... The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility!!... The Minister unveiled the church s new campaign slogan: I Upped My Pledge Up Yours!!... The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday!!
