It was an incredible week, as anyone who has been to Augusta National Golf Club can tell you it truly is a special place. This year I was preparing food for the magnolia hospitality cabins. I worked alongside some great chefs from around the world, as they hire 140 chefs to run their 26 kitchens, in total they hire 1200 people in food and beverage for the week. We were feeding about 450 people a day in our group of cabins, we served breakfast, lunch and snack. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, with changing menus at lunch, snack was a changing menu of hors d'oeuvres and small bites. we also provided breakfast and lunch for the caddie building. It was a great honor to be selected again to work at this amazing event, and hope to be returning next year. I want to thank the membership for allowing me the time to attend this fantastic event. 4 Annual Guest Program The Membership Committee, on behalf of the Board of Governors, will again offer guest privileges of The Rockaway Hunting Club to men and women this year. The Guest Program will commence on May 1, 2017 and expire on April 30, Over the years, the Annual Guest Program has been tremendously successful for the Club, resulting in many participants continuing on to become regular members. The selection process is competitive and the Membership Committee may not be able to accommodate all candidates. Sponsors should only propose men and women who meet the same high standards of character and fit expected for full membership. Annual Guests are able to enjoy use of the Club and all its facilities for twelve months. The intent of the Annual Guest Program is to allow individuals who do not know the Club to get to know the Club and its membership better, and for the membership to get to know a candidate better. To this end, the Membership Committee may invite, at its own discretion, those Annual Guests who have not reached their thirty-third birthday as of May 1, 2017, to participate in a second year beginning on May 1, A sponsoring letter and supporting letter, addressed to the Chair of the Membership Committee, must introduce each candidate for the Annual Guest Program. One letter should be from a current member of the Club while the other may be from a current Member or a current Guest. In either case, a candidate should be personally known by his/her sponsor and supporter. To complete the application, in addition to sponsoring and supporting letters, the candidates sponsor must complete an Annual Guest Program Fact Sheet, included herein. All Fact Sheets and letters must be submitted to Theresa Scarpantonio in the Club Office (tscarp@rhcny.com) by Friday, March31, After a completed application is submitted and accepted for consideration, the sponsor will be notified and should be prepared to commit his or her candidate to an interview with the Membership Committee. A spouse or fiancé(e) is required to accompany the candidate at his or her interview with the Membership Committee. Interviews will take place beginning in April in Manhattan. Candidates are expected to have visited the Club at some point prior to their interview with the Membership Committee. Fees for the Annual Guest Program are payable one-half on June 1, 2017 and one-half on December 1, The fee schedule this year is as follows: Age on May 1, 2017 Age 21 to to to to & Over Annual Fee $5,000 $5,525 $8,450 $5,825 $4,265 It should be noted that unpaid dues and house charges incurred by Guest Members are the responsibility of the sponsor. If you have any questions regarding the Guest Program, please do not hesitate to contact Theresa Scarpantonio in the Club Office at or tscarp@rhcny.com

6 Upcoming Golf Season April 2017 Course Opens Let s play some golf! We have an exciting season ahead of us and invite everyone to take advantage of our exceptional golf course. Although the weather did not completely cooperate this past weekend, the forecast paints a much better picture this week and we expect a fully functioning golf operation. I hope everyone had the chance to read the recent newsletter from our new Maintenance Chairman, Andy Ryan. As stated in the letter, the golf course officially opened this past weekend on Saturday, April 8 th. The letter contained useful information, most importantly, the Maintenance Master Plan developed with Hanse Golf Course Design. The committee spent a great amount of time and care in developing the plan so it is worthwhile to review when you have time. In addition to the information contained in the plan, the Maintenance Committee would like to remind all members that your individual efforts are important to the condition and appearance of the golf course, particularly with more guests, including national raters, playing the course. PLEASE: Fix at least one ball mark on every green every time you play Replace all divots in fairways or use the seed mix provided on golf carts. Enter and exit bunkers at the lowest point. Climbing up the face of bunkers damages the sod layers and leads to rapid deterioration of the bunker structure. When raking bunkers please rake the sand evenly up the face of the bunker and across the bottom. Pulling the sand entirely up or down removes sand from one area and creates excess sand and plugged lies in the other. Rakes should be left on the fairway side of the bunkers and placed with the rake facing forward. Golf carts must be kept at least 20 yards from greens and out of the tall fescue grass at all times. Stay off ground under repair and obey all signage and instructions from the maintenance crew Please respect range rules and do not hit clubs which can exceed 210 yards after 10:30am. Course Rating Update and Effect on Handicaps Due to course renovations over the past few years, we invited the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) to update the ratings of our three tees. Please see the changes below: Rating Slope Effect on Handicap Over Time Current Blue Revised Blue stroke higher Current Red Revised Red stroke lower for those that score in the 80s 90s; all others no effect Current White Revised White stroke higher for those that score in the 90s; all others no effect The MGA determined that the changes from our renovations produced a more difficult golf course and the rating for the Red tees was adjusted accordingly. The Blue and White tees, however, received a lower rating because the golf course we play on a daily basis is 200 yards shorter than where the previous distance measurements were taken. Therefore, although the course is more difficult due to the recent changes, the distance reduction led to an overall lower rating from those respective tees.
7 Without getting into the complexities of the handicap system calculations, please note that there will be no change to your handicap initially, but it will migrate slowly over time as new scores are posted under the revised ratings. Golf Staff We are proud to have our Head Professional Ryan George running another successful golf season at Rockaway Hunting Club. You will notice a few familiar faces from 2016 as well as some new additions, which will round out a capable Golf Staff prepared to deliver a golf experience the members come to expect and deserve. Please look out for the opening newsletter from Ryan as he introduces his staff in the coming weeks. Important Dates: Course Opens: Women s Member Guest: Men s Member Guest: April 8 th June 17 th June 24 th and 25 th Application Rules for the Men s Member Guest Due to overwhelming interest in the member guest tournament in recent years, we instituted a new application process last year, which we will continue this year, to ensure a fair and equitable allocation for acceptance into the tournament. Please see below for the guidelines: Resident and Non-Resident Members Application window will run from May 3 rd through May 17 th (no applications will be received prior to the application window and those received afterward will be placed on a waitlist) Applications will be accepted on a first come basis until the tournament is at capacity (all remaining applications will be placed on a waitlist) Guest members Allowed to apply starting May 17 th Starting May 17 th both full members and guest members will be given equal priority on a first come basis Only completed applications will be accepted, which need to include the Guest s full name, handicap and GHIN number (partially completed applications will not be accepted) Rules of Conduct As always, at the beginning of the golf season, we want to remind everyone to adhere to the following rules in order to make the overall experience optimal for all members and guests: Please play all rounds in four hours or less. On weekends during the months of July and August, no more than one guest may be included in any foursome prior to 11a.m. Players must honor tee time reservations. If a player does not cancel a reserved tee time with 24 hours advance notice, it will be noted and monitored for repeat offenses.
8 The rules above will be monitored closely, especially for pace of play and tee time policies. If a member habitually breaks the rules, he or she can expect a letter from the Golf Committee followed by possible restrictions on future play. Caddie Program The caddie program is one of the most important facets in our overall golf program. Ronnie has done a terrific job of raising the level of the caddie program each year, including recruiting members of the Long Island University golf team, who will be returning for the 2017 season. The Golf Committee, Maintenance Committee and the Golf Staff highly encourage everyone to walk our course whenever feasible. When looking at the data, we were encouraged to find that a high percentage of our membership consistently utilizes the rewards of having a teammate on their bag. Let s Play! As mentioned in the Maintenance newsletter, Rockaway is a gem. There are very few golf courses in the Metropolitan area that can boast of water views and a classic seaside links style. The recognition we are receiving from major publications and from national raters is only increasing. Don t let this exceptional golf course go underutilized come play! Sincerely, Golf Committee
