1 Translate Volume 1, Number 21,March 2018 Editor - David Lubke View this in your browser Dear Members and Friends, welcome to the March 2018 Newsletter President's Report I am pleased to report that today [March 20] the new bridge on the 9 th hole was placed into position our thanks to all those who have contributed towards making this project come to fruition. It is noted that this project looks like being completed well under budget and so quickly after revising our refurbishment plans. Thanks to Peter Hoskin [Grounds C tee Chair] for overseeing and co-ordinating the project. Although the bridge deck installation is complete, staff will be completing additional works over the next few weeks. There have been many special events over the past month, including Monthly Medal [won by Lindsay Budds with a scintillating score of 60 nett!!], Central Vic Veterans [98 players], Opening Day, the Stewart Family day and of course our Autumn Tournament which have all been successful of course due to that extra bit of organisation and volunteer 1/10

2 support that just seems to be always there. Lesley Elvey and Rod Jacobs ensured once again that everything ran like clockwork. Opening Day was notable due to the inaugural presentation of the Bob & Lorraine Gunn Trophy to Rob & Sue Minne well done! Both Bob and Lorraine were amongst the group that established the club and Bob was later inducted as the club s 1 st Life Member. In closing, I can report that Allan Andrews [V/Pres], Owen Davies [Sec.] and myself recently presented a submission to Jacinta Allan [MLA] concerning what is known as the Police Paddock which is the land to the south of the 8 th and 16 th tees. Over the years the club has made a number of attempts to gain access to this land for course development. We all agreed that Ms Allan received our briefing paper with enthusiasm and whilst there remain a number of bridges to cross on this, and that it will take some months to gain an official response, we will continue to hope for a favourable response. We have had the Opening Day, which included the Bob & Lorraine Gunn trophy, the Autumn Tournament held over three days and Abbotts Supply Day ( Super Saturday ) coming up this Saturday (24 th ). We then have 2/10

3 Men s Past Pennant IssuesComp commencing on the Sunday (25 th ) with Axedale hosting the Div 3 & Open Division for round 1. We will host the Div 1 & 2 matches for Round 3 (15 th April). March Monthly Medal winner was won by Lindsay Budds with an outstanding 83/23/60. Congratulations Lindsay. March Mid-Week Monthly Trophy Qualifier was Trav Fitzgerald (9) with an excellent 42 points. Well done Trav. The Match Committee was held on 7 th March with the main issued covered being: August Annual Tournament recommendation for changes to the Annual Tournament with the general feeling being that there still needed to be a mixed event be on the program. The thought being that the inclusion of the event would not greatly affect the two-day 18/36 Men s event s numbers. The Committee ratified this, so the program will be: Saturday men s 18 holes and Mixed Pinehurst; Sunday men and ladies 18 holes. Re-rating of course ratings findings to be posted for all members to read. With current fully printed cards being about 6000 still on hand, it would be some time for the club to wait till this supply is almost exhausted. It is therefore suggested that advice be given to members (especially those who regularly play Saturday morning and would use the existing fully printed cards) of the rating changes and to amend their cards accordingly when playing events other than stroke. The changes to the course index would come into effect as of 1 st May. Abbotts Supply Day With a large number of prizes, Club Captain is to coordinate prize allocation for four men s divisions and two ladies division along with additional prizes (NTPs & Straightest Drive). Captain will also coordinate morning send off to assist with expected numbers. Competition Grading clear explanation of how divisions are formulated and how prize money is distributed depending on size of fields was examined. It was felt that the current system was the fairest way and was an attraction to most golfers (with the possibility of winning). It was understood that low handicap golfers had a harder task of taking out prizes and it was suggested that a Gross prize ($30 voucher) for any Stroke event would encourage low handicap golfers to play in such events. The Committee endorsed this, with Men s Monthly Medal day now including a $30 voucher for lowest gross score. Easter Clubhouse Attendance Volunteers a call has been put out to hopefully get some members who would be able to spend a couple of hours in the clubhouse (primarily Good Friday & Easter Sunday. 4 Men's Monthly medalist for March - Lindsay Budds with President Andrew. Lady President's Report Once again, March has been an extremely busy time for the Axedale Ladies. We appreciated the time our members generously gave to supporting events such as the Veterans Day where we catered for a large field and then the Autumn Tournament where lady members supported the club by playing in the event, providing delicious slices and helping in the kitchen, the clubhouse and in administrative roles on all the days. Thank you most sincerely to everyone involved and congratulations to the winners. Despite all the action in the kitchen, we do manage to play a lot of golf and with the Summer competition completed we 4/10

5 can look back at some great games of golf played in perfect conditions throughout the season. Thanks to everyone for their co-operation throughout the Summer months. Now we can look forward to Ladies pennant; a social Par 3 game on Anzac Day and our usual competition events on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday so there are plenty of opportunities to improve our game and chip away at our handicap. Maybe the members who recently visited the Island of the Long White Cloud can give us some tips? Good golfing everyone. Men's March Mid-Week Monthly Trophy Qualifier was Trav Fitzgerald Lady Captain's Report The past month has seen good numbers in the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday comps. A team from Axedale represented the club at the recent Kyneton s Opening Irish 3 Ball and although no trophies were won, a good day was had by all. Congratulations to our two Monthly Medal winners for March. Saturday Sue Minne Wednesday Trish Shanahan GCV Ladies Pennant commences on Monday 9 th April with Axedale fielding 3 teams. This is a great effort and thank you to all the ladies who are representing the club. Our Autumn Tournament has just finished with good numbers in the three ladies events. The Wednesday 3 Ball had 54 players take part, including a team from Stawell who made the long trip over. The winners were an Axedale team of Carmel Harrison, Lesley Poker and Alyson McCulloch with a wonderful 87 pts. The Friday 4 Ball had 20 players, with the Heathcote pair of Dot Trott and Dot McGillvary winning on a C/B with 45pts from Axedale s Rosemary Griffin and Rosemary Winther. Winners on Saturday with a brilliant 50 pts were Axedale s Debbie Kesper and Carmel Jacobs from Lesley Elvey and Helen Martin with 43 pts. Lesley and Helen won the 2 day aggregate with 84 pts. Course Peter Hoskin The most recent Course Committee meeting was held on site at the maintenance shed, from where the members inspected the site of the new bridge across 9 th. The Committee feels the bridge should be painted in black to match the 9 th tee, with the possibility of cladding the sides in future. The Club has used 50Mg of water year-to-date. The Cushman damaged in the creek crash was sold to Neangar Park for spares. Guard rails have been purchased to prevent carts falling from bridges. These should be installed within a week.
