3 Topping up Bunkers / Revitalisation Today (22 nd Sept) we re checking out the depth of sand in the bunkers. It s incredible the amount of sand that s blown out of them when the wind blows. The bunkers that needed sand were topped up with a special graded bunker sand. We then tracked the sand in to make sure that a ball would not plug. A depth of 3 to 4 inches of sand spread evenly over the bunker is ideal. Work has started again on the revitalisation project over the past few weeks. Course Architect, Pat Ruddy, has been concentrating on the 12th hole. A new medal tee has been built and a new bunker has been added up the left hand side of the fairway. The tee box and the area in front of the tee was seeded out this week. The bunker build should be finished next week. Over-Seeding Greens New bunker on 3rd hole. The area in front of the new 12th tee has been seeded. Over the past few days we ve been over-seeding greens with a blend of fine fescue seed. We used the Blec over-seeder to make a dimple in the ground for the seed. The seed was dragged in with an astro turf mat to make sure it was spread evenly. Ten ton of top-dressing sand was applied, to smooth the putting surface, followed by a light brushing to work the sand in. The greens were then rolled with the turf iron. This may seem like a lot of disturbance on the greens but it s a standard procedure and the putting surfaces will be running fine in a couple of days time. If you would like to know what a fescue green should look like I would encourage you to check out the lower putting/chipping green in front of the clubhouse. This green was reseeded in June 2015 and now has around 90% fescue coverage. This is what we re working towards for all our greens. New bunker on the left side of the 12th fairway Top-Dressing with sand Brushing in the seed and sand.

6 AIG CUPS AND SHIELD ALL-IRELAND FINALS - CHALLENGE CUP After securing the Connacht District Pennant our Ladies Challenge Cup panel went to the District Finals at Dundalk GC in confident mood. For the second year we were placed in the quarter final draw of the five competing districts. Our ladies lost to a very strong Headfort team who eventually went on to win the Challenge Cup beating Ballybunion in the final on Saturday. As Team Captain I am very proud of our panel who put in a massive effort preparing and practicing for the finals, they have gained massive experience and will be feeling confident going into next year s competition. I know that new friendships have been formed that will continue for years to come. To all our team, you represented the Club by playing the game in a truly sporting manner. To all our caddies thank you for your help on the bag. To Vice Captain Edel and Teams Co-ordinator Catherine thank you for all your support and hard work and Mary Kennedy for her help on rules. Lastly, thank you to all our supporters, particularly Captain Jeff, President Tony, Vice-Captain Tom and David and all the members who sent good wishes and who supported us in Dundalk. 16 Ryder Cup prelude Davis Love may have set the cat amongst the pigeons when he stated: "This is the best golf team maybe ever assembled. The hosts seek to avoid losing for the ninth time in the past 11 meetings. Victorious 2014 European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley responded: "It's going to have a big galvanising affect on the European team,". Lets see who s right bring it on! All the action available to view in the golf club. Enjoy the matches in the company of friends. RULES OF GOLF QUIZ ANSWERS A1 You are penalised two strokes (Rule 17-3). A2 The state of the match on the third tee is that B is one up. As A and B both arrived at the first tee within five minutes after their starting time they each incurred the penalty of loss of hole, so the referee correctly ruled that the hole was halved. Although player B then asked player A what club he had used for his tee shot from the 2nd teeing ground, which would incur a loss of hole penalty if he had done it during his round, Decision 2/2 clarifies that in singles match play a player only begins their stipulated round when they make their first stroke in that round. Therefore, no penalty was incurred by B and A incurred the loss of hole penalty as soon as he gave B information on what club he had used. A 3. No. The player making the stroke has an obligation to shout fore. Although it is considered best practice for all to shout fore.
