Despite leading the team to an AAU Basketball Championship in 1931, [7]. Best results in LPGA major championships (wins: 10). Didrikson won two gold medals and one silver medal for track and field in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. [8]. She moved with her family to 850 Doucette in Beaumont, Texas, at age 4. She claimed to have acquired the nickname "Babe" (after Babe Ruth ) upon hitting five home runs in a TEENhood baseball game, but her Norwegian mother had called her "Bebe" from the time she was a toddler. [5]. Didrikson's first job after high school was as a secretary for the Employers' Casualty Insurance Company of Dallas, though she was employed only in order to play basketball as an amateur on the company's "industrial team", the Golden Cyclones. [6]. In 1948, she became the first woman to attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, but her application was rejected by the USGA. They stated that the event was intended to be open to men only. [15]. She was a singer and a harmonica player and recorded several songs on the Mercury Records label. Her biggest seller was "I Felt a Little Teardrop" with "Detour" on the flip side. [. Representing her company in the 1932 AAU Championships, she competed in eight out of ten events, winning five outright, and tying for first in a sixth. Didrikson's performances were enough to win the team championship, despite her being the sole member of her team. [4]. In the following years, she performed on the vaudeville circuit, traveled with teams like Babe Didrikson's All-Americans basketball team and the bearded House of David (commune) team. Didrikson was also a competitive pocket billiards (pool) player, though not a champion. She was noted in the January 1933 press for playing (and badly losing) a multi-day straight pool match in New York City against famed female. They met in a 1950 amateur golf tournament in Miami and became close almost immediately. Cayleff wrote, "As Didrikson's marriage grew increasingly troubled, she spent more time with Dodd. The women toured together on the golf circuit, and eventually Dodd moved in with Zaharias and Didrikson for the last six years of Didrikson's life. [21]. and the 9th Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century by the Associated Press. [. During her final years, Didrikson became known not only for her athletic abilities but as a public advocate for cancer awareness, at a time when many Americans refused to seek diagnosis or treatment for suspected cancer. [25]. Two days later, on March 22, 1934, Didrikson pitched the

2 later, on March 22, 1934, Didrikson pitched the first inning of a major league baseball exhibition game for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Boston Red Sox. It was reported that "Under tutelage of Burleigh Grimes, Dizzy Dean and others she has learned to stand on the rubber, wind up like a big leaguer and throw a rather fair curve." [17]. Didrikson is still recognized as the world record holder for the farthest baseball throw by a woman. [19]. She used her fame to raise funds for her cancer fund but also as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. Her work in this arena was honored by US President Dwight Eisenhower on a visit to the White House. [21]. Zaharias won the 1946 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1947 British Ladies Amateur the first American to do so and three Women's Western Opens. Having formally turned professional in 1947, Didrikson dominated the Women's Professional Golf Association and later the Ladies Professional Golf Association, of which she was a founding member. Serious illness ended her career in the mid-1950s. Zaharias has a museum dedicated to her in Beaumont, Texas, the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum. Several golf courses are named after her. A Tampa, Florida golf course that she and her husband owned, the Babe Zaharias Golf Course, was given landmark status. [29]. wrote of Zaharias, "Except perhaps for Arnold Palmer, no golfer has ever been more beloved by the gallery." [11]. Babe Zaharias Park is located in Beaumont adjacent to her museum. Zaharias won a tournament named after her, the Babe Zaharias Open of her hometown of Beaumont, Texas. She won the 1947 Titleholders Championship and the 1948 U.S. Women's Open for her fourth and fifth major championships. She won 17 straight women's amateur victories, a feat never equaled by anyone. By 1950, she had won every golf title available. Totaling both her amateur and professional victories, Zaharias won a total of 82 golf tournaments. September 27, 1956 ( ) (aged 45) Galveston, Texas, U.S. [1]. In 1981, the U.S. Postal Service issued an 18 cent stamp commemorating Zaharias. [30]. and Tucson Opens through 36-hole qualifiers, as opposed to a sponsor's exemption. [14]. The Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum in Beaumont is also one of the city's welcoming centers. She was a close friend of fellow golfer Betty Dodd. According to Susan Cayleff's biography Babe, Dodd was quoted as saying, "I had such admiration for this fabulous person [Zaharias]. I loved her. I would have done anything for her." [20]. Though best known for her athletic gifts, Didrikson had many talents. She also competed in sewing. An excellent seamstress, she made many of her clothes, including her golfing outfits. She claimed to have won the sewing championship at the 1931 State Fair of Texas in Dallas; she did win the South Texas State Fair in Beaumont, embellishing the story many years later in She attended Beaumont High School. Never a strong student, she was forced to repeat the eighth grade and was a year older than her classmates. She eventually dropped out without graduating after she moved to Dallas to play basketball. [5]. Lloyd Gullickson, Glenna Collett-Vare, Babe Ruth, and Zaharias in a charity golf event for All TEENren's Hospital, Didrikson became America's first female

3 1934. Didrikson became America's first female golf celebrity and the leading player of the 1940s and early 1950s. In order to regain amateur status in the sport, she could compete in no other sports for three years. She gained back her amateur status in In 1945, she had participated in three more PGA Tour events, missing the second cut of the first of them, and making the cut of the other two; as of 2018 she remains the only woman to have achieved this. [10]. Zaharias broke the accepted models of femininity in her time, including the accepted models of female athleticism. Standing 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall and weighing 115 lb (52 kg), [27]. In the 80-meter hurdles, she equaled the world record of 11.8 seconds in her opening heat. In the final, she broke her record with an 11.7 clocking, taking gold. In the javelin, she also won gold with an Olympic record throw of meters. In the high jump, she took silver with a world record-tying leap of metres (5.44 ft). Fellow American Jean Shiley also jumped metres, and the pair tied in a jump-off when the bar was raised to 1.67 metres (5.5 ft). Shiley was awarded the gold after Didrikson was ruled to have used an improper technique. [1]. She was one of six initial inductees into the LPGA Hall of Fame at its inception in In addition to continuing tournament play, Zaharias also served as the president of the LPGA from August 1952 to July [22]. She is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in her hometown of Beaumont, Texas. [24].. I can't say I was always open about my sexuality. I was closeted in my first coaching gig. I was young and riding a student-athlete experience full of silence. LPGA pioneer/protector Louise Suggs, photographed at home in St. Augustine, Fla., on Feb. 14, Check out our status page for more details. Until this year, Louise would attend the Masters every year she grew up in Georgia and was one of the last people to play a round of golf with Bobby Jones before illness forced him from the game and sit in a chair outside the back door of the clubhouse. I'd kneel beside her and listen to her tell stories. One year Ben Crenshaw brought Jerry Pate over to introduce him to Louise. Then Crenshaw, who knows as much about the history of the game as anyone, said: "Show him that grip, Louise." Suggs fixed Crenshaw with a stare, glanced at Pate, took her cane and held it with a pictureperfect golf grip. "Golly," Ben said, stretching the word out for about five seconds. In 2007, when the Ricoh Women's British Open became the first women's professional tournament played on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Louise would sit in the bay window of the Big Room in the thenmale-only clubhouse, lean on her cane, and watch the women tee off. I always took it as her way of saying to the R&A: "It's about time." Some years back, I did an oral-history project for the Hall of Fame in which I did videotaped interviews with female HOF members. One question I asked all of them was, "What was the strongest part of your game?" Nancy Lopez said it was her putting. Kathy Whitworth said it was learning to put a cut tee shot in the fairway under pressure. When I asked Louise the strongest part of her game, she said: "When I got someone down, I put my foot on their throat." There was not a trace of a smile. It was just Louise speaking the truth, as she always did. Olympic hockey players

Jamie Leno Zimron: When did you realize you were gay?. For the very few athletes who did come out while in college, what was the response like in their athletic community?. In my years coaching I found that my male players undoubtedly required more direct (and blunt) conversation. I had to be real and honest, so I decided to tackle the homophobic language I was hearing head-on with a team meeting. I had materials addressing heteronormative language, homophobic language and our responsibility as a team to be inclusive and inviting. I coupled these materials with my personal story of being a gay athlete and coach. I never saw Louise Suggs hit a golf shot in person. By the time I got to know her, bad knees, bad shoulders and a bad heart had forced her from playing. What she never stopped being was an advocate for the LPGA, the women's game and golf. That also ended Aug. 7, when she died of melanoma a month before her 92nd birthday. With 61 career victories (trailing only Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright and Annika Sorenstam) and 11 major championships (third behind Patty Berg and Wright), Suggs is one of the best ever in the women's game, a recognition she had among her peers if not among the public. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Suggs had a Hall of Fame career even before the LPGA was founded in 1950, winning the Western Open in 1946, '47 and '49; the Titleholders in 1946, and the U.S. Women's Open in She also won the 1947 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1948 British Ladies Amateur. In the early days of the LPGA, Suggs' incredible skill was lost in the shadow of the showmanship of Babe Zaharias, a rival Louise never stopped disliking, in part because the Babe was the player the public associated with greatness in the women's game. "The Babe wasn't a golfer," Louise told me some years back. "She was a marketer." And when someone once asked her about how far Zaharias drove the ball, I heard Louise say: "She had that cheap-ass Texas hook and would roll it out there on hard-baked fairways. On a wet course, I'd fly it by her all day all day.". The first openly gay college football player to score a touchdown, Wyatt Pertuset, gets recognized by ESPN. Nine months after coming out publicly as gay, pro wrestler Mike Parrow has never been happier and his career is taking off. to stay on-site for their party. Didrikson's performances were enough to win the team championship, despite her being the sole member of her team. [4]. On March 20, 1934, Didrikson pitched one inning in a major league baseball spring training exhibition game for the Philadelphia Athletics against the Brooklyn Dodgers. She gave up a walk and no hits. [6]. Zaharias was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Women's Golf in In 1957, she posthumously received the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. It was accepted by her husband George, four months after her death. [28]. September 27, 1956 ( ) (aged 45) Galveston, Texas, U.S. [1]. Three days later, on March 25, 1934, she played for the New Orleans Pelicans against the Cleveland Indians, pitching two scoreless innings and lining out in her only plate appearance. [16]. In 1953 Zaharias was diagnosed with colon cancer. After undergoing surgery, she made a comeback in She took the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, her only win of that trophy, and her 10th and final major with a U.S. Women's Open championship, one month after the surgery and while wearing a colostomy bag. With this win, she became the second-oldest woman to win a major LPGA championship tournament (behind Fay Crocker ). Babe Zaharias now stands third to Crocker and Sherri Steinhauer. These wins made her the fastest player to reach 30 wins (five years and 22 days). [14]. and the 9th Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century by the Associated Press. [.
