WRITTEN BY THE EDITOR ON OCTOBER 15, POSTED IN FEATURES, GOLF Like 2 Tweet 2 Yesterday I got to play the much talked about and anticipated Steyn City Golf course. Steyn City is one day going to be just that a city. And with a championship golf course as a key element of it, it s a place that you will hear a lot about in future. So let s have a look at this Nicklaus Design masterpiece. The future golfing boss of the Gauteng. The word unique is something that pops up often when referring to Steyn City. It took a unique vision to transform a disused granite quarry into an oasis of golfing beauty. It was unique that the course has been given an extended growing in phase, whereas other new courses are often taking rounds the moment it is playable. It is unique how the Jukskei River comes into play throughout the course, and how natural canyons give the course a character of its own, despite its age. It is unique how big this course is, and how it is about one and a half times the size of your normal

2 Page 2 of 18 golf course land wise. But unique is a pretty average word. A word that I feel better describes Steyn City and all its facilities, is exceptional. Golf on another level. Upon arrival yesterday, a small media group were ushered into helicopters where we got a true bird s eye view of this exceptional place. Much like Serengeti, another high profile golf resort in Gauteng, Steyn City has used cool season fescue/rye grass. So it will be brilliantly green all year round, even in the height of the dry Joburg winter.

3 Page 3 of 18 The par 4 8th hole. The driving range measures 325 x 100 meters, with lots of that beautiful green grass to warm up on. There is nothing better than hitting a few before your round, and in this setting you really do get extra excited for that first tee.

4 Page 4 of 18 The innovative and dynamically designed clubhouse is the most welcoming of place. From the pro shop to the changerooms to the lounge/dining area, the theme of exceptional flows throughout, with friendly and ample staff further adding to the sense of occasion this place possesses. The one of a kind Steyn City clubhouse.

5 Page 5 of 18 The course itself, well this is where the adjectives can really flow. From the tee boxes the course is presented beautifully. No matter the tee you play off, every hole seems to offer something special, and even so early in its playing, offers distinct challenges for every level of golfer. Winding up on the 1st tee. Immaculate conditioning aside, the use of elevation at Steyn City really sets itself apart from other big course created on the Highveld over the past years. Every now and again you get an element of Serengeti, Copperleaf, Blair Athol and Blue Valley, but where all those courses have their high points, Steyn City seems to keep the experience bar high from the 1st tee to the 18 th green.

6 Page 6 of 18 Par 4 4th hole. The par 5s are strong, some offering a genuine three shot attack for even the better golfer. The par 4s make you think and again offer good length, along with some adventurous risk/reward shorter variations.

7 Page 7 of 18 Approaching the par 4 8th. The par 4 11th hole. And lastly the par 3s offer great variety. My biggest hate in golf is the par 3 simply being a short hole, so often you play a course nowadays and just use the same club for all four holes.

8 Page 8 of 18 Par 3 12th hole. In a place this impressive, you naturally think of if there is anything you would change, or find fault in, and after much thought, I could find but one. Par 4 18th hole. The biggest problem I could find with Steyn City is that it will only be open for play in March next year,
