DORSET LADIES COUNTY GOLF ASSOCIATION County Delegates Meeting Minutes Dorchester Bowls Club Friday 14 th July 2017 at 10.30am 1. Apologies Margaret Swift - Competition Secretary; Toni Burke - Remedy Oak GC; Anthea Bailey - Christchurch G C; Sue Hampton-Ashley Wood GC; Karen Gray Dudsbury GC; Ros Doughty -Queens Park GC; Gaye Thompson - Came Down GC; Kay Everett County Junior Organiser; Marian Hallet Bulbury Woods GC. 2 Minutes of Meeting held 17 th February 2017 Agreed Proposed by Penny Hunt Weymouth GC Seconded by Di Groombridge Ferndown GC 3 Matters Arising - None 4 Correspondence Sheila has received a letter from Sue Crabb- Ferndown GC regarding the Johnstone Cup and the Spring Meeting now being played on the same day, with a combined CSS, and feeling that these should be played on different days. (Letter included as an addendum) Ann She has vertually said in her letter what the problem is that we can t get courses. As for the CSS, the rules say that as they are both stroke play, being played on the same day, same course, then the CSS will be the same for both competitions. All seemed happy with this reply to the query in the letter. 5 Presentation by the Engalnd Golf Regional Manager Paul Cloke with Natalie McColl Sheila introduced Paul and Natalie to the attendees who then gave their presentation - Please see Addendum
6 Captain s Report 88th County Championship Held at Broadstone Golf Club, Friday, Saturday & Sunday th April. It was very pleasing that there were more ladies entered in the County Championship than in previous years, a total of 30 ladies entered. We witnessed some very impressive golf over the three days of the competition. The match play rounds were very exciting with a couple of matches going up the 19 th and 20 th, with some very tired players. The semi-finals were between Alice Plumb (Sherborne) and Sam Hill (IOP) and Louise Sims (Dudsbury) and Mel McMahon (Lyme Regis) with Alice and Mel winning through to the final. The final was amazing and such a privilege to watch with Alice winning with a birdie on the 18 th. Mel just missed her long birdie putt by inches. Congratulations to Alice, who I am hoping will play in the Champion of Champions at Woodall Spa in September. Johnstone Cup In the Johnstone Cup we also saw some very impressive golf with the semi-finals between Kate Roberts (Broadstone) v Sue Jackson (Broadstone) and Shannon Stobb (Yeovil) v Pam Dobbs (Parkstone). In the afternoon, it was between Kate and Shannon even though it was still very cold we saw Kate come out the winner. Silver Spring Challenge The Spring Challenge started after the Johnstone Cup and at least the sun came out and it was slightly warmer. The best gross was Carole Brown (Bridport) with a gross of 85 and the best nett winner was also Carole Brown with a nett 69 well done Carole. I would like to thank Broadstone Golf Club for all their support over the days of the competitions. Report for Bronze Spring Meeting Held at Sherborne Golf Club on Thursday 25 th May. Unlike last year the weather was brilliant in fact during the afternoon too hot. Some of the ladies had their umbrellas up as it was so hot luckily there was a small breeze later in the day. The Low Bronze - Banister Cup (best gross) was won by Angela Heysham (Sherborne GC) with a gross score of 99 with Ros Williams (Yeovil GC) runner up winning the Helen Edwards Cup. The best nett and winner of the Cox Cup was Carole McGovern (Sherborne GC) with a nett score of 78 winning on count back from Angela Heysham (Sherborne) who won the SIme Salver The High Bronze and Craig Trophy was won by Sally Little (Came Down) with 32 points on count back from Marian Hallett (Bulbury Woods) who won the De Gruchy Salver. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to everyone for taking part and for continuing to make this a successful annual event. Thank you to Sherborne GC. County Foursomes 21 st & 22nd June - at Ashley Wood Golf Club What a difference in the weather between the Wednesday and Thursday Wednesday sweltering heat over 30 degrees and on the Thursday just about making the 20 s and windy. The course played well with some strange and lucky bounces due to the dry weather that we have had over the last few weeks. The windy conditions on Thursday caused different problems but I think that everyone who played on both days thoroughly enjoyed the course.
A big thank you to everyone that played as the weather on Wednesday was in the extreme and everyone finished, some very red faces and I think everyone was glad to get in and have some shade. There was excellent golf played by everyone and I witnessed some amazing shots and the golf played was of a very high standard. We had 10 teams in the Scratch competition, 18 in the silver and 17 in the bronze what a brilliant turn out, again a big thank you to everyone. The scratch final was between Broadstone and Yeovil with Broadstone coming out the winners. The silver final was between Weymouth & Broadstone with Weymouth winning this competition. The Bronze final was between Came Down and Parkstone with Came Down coming out victorious. Congratulations to all the players, good to see such good foursomes being played over the two days. Over 70 s This was played at Dorset Golf & Country Club and we had 42 entries which was amazing. There were some excellent scores with Cattrin Wickens winning with 21 points, closely followed by Marjorie Nisbett with 20 points both from Parkstone Golf Club. Thank you to Dorset Golf and Country Club for hosting the event and making us feel so welcome. Inter County Match Week 2017 I really hope you kept abreast of the week by reading Ann s blog on the County Website, thank you Ann for providing an informative view of the week s goings on! Also, for the first time Tracy was putting out tweets on Twitter beginning to move into the 21 st Century. This year we were playing at Wrag Barn GC near Swindon and the weather forecast for the week was very hot weather with possible thunderstorms (which didn t happen). We were very unfortunate when Alice Plumb pulled out at the last minute with very bad toothache due to the dentist hitting a nerve. We also did not have Harriet Teversham as she was playing in English Open Match Play and Charlotte Heeps who was representing Canford School in the final of the Independent Schools golf final. But, we had a young and youthful team but didn t have the luck of the draw with our first match against Gloucestershire, followed by Devon and then Cornwall the three big ones right at the beginning. Day One Had a successful morning, everyone played excellent golf and we ended up 2 1 down after foursomes. Excellent golf played by all six players in the afternoon and we won 2 matches losing 6-3 to the National Champions not a bad result and in fact at the end of the week we won more matches against Gloucestershire than any other County. Day Two Playing Devon in the morning foursomes we managed a half but the singles we lost 5 1. The result doesn t justify how well everyone played the match was lost 6 ½ to 2 ½. Day Three halfway through the week beginning to feel tired but on we go. We lost some players and gained others. Playing Cornwall who are always strong and we lost all foursomes and singles the golf gods were not with us.
Day Four match against Wiltshire the day started well with us only being 2-1 down in the foursomes. Wiltshire managed to lift their games and won 6 3. Final day against Somerset With nothing to lose we tried a couple of different pairings and even though everyone tried their best we lost the foursomes 3-0. Onto the afternoon and we managed to get 2 ½ points losing the say 6 ½ to 2 ½. We had a great team this year, the team and fighting spirit was second to none. As you can see we had some very close finishes and but for a point or even half a point extra here and there it could have been a very different story. The team were:- Alex Cornell and Scarlett Williams (Parkstone), Melissa McMahon (Lyme Regis), Kyra Horlock and Rebekah Hobell (Broadstone), Jo Terry (Sherborne), Jane Southcombe (Yeovil), Lilli Horn, Amanda Walker and Louise Pettitt (Ferndown) and Sarah Webb (Sturminster Marshall). I must make special mention of Jo Terry, Scarlett Williams, Amanda Walker, Sarah Webb and Lili Horn who took part in their first Inter-County Match week. I know they enjoyed the week and they contributed enormously to the team. As you can see quite a few new players and I am sure that they will be keen to play next year at St Enodoc in Cornwall. This is my last report and meeting as Captain and I would like to thank you all for volunteering as delegates it isn t an easy job but thank you for all the work that you put in. Can I also remind you that we are still looking for an Assistant Secretary to help Liz next year. Please ask at your clubs and maybe someone will step up to the plate. I wish you good golfing and thank you for your support over the last two years. 7 Reports from other Officers i Vice Captain I want to let you know that I have set up a Twitter feed for Dorset Ladies Golf. You can find this by going to our website and clicking on the Twitter icon. You then click on Dorset Ladies Golf. This will take you to the feed. You can also Google Twitter Dorset Ladies Golf. You do not have to join Twitter. You are able to see all the news as it happens. I will add local and national items of interest and also news from Georgia Hall and Henni Goya (former Dorset girl now a Sky Sports anchor for ladies golf). The Twitter feed is designed to complement the website by being less formal, more instant for immediate results. Twitter is, by its nature uncomplicated and brief. I would encourage you to inform all of your members to check it out.
ii SW Regional Representatives Jane Southcombe (Read by the Captain in her absence) Firstly, my apologies, but I think is the first Delegates Meeting I've missed since I haven't got a lot to report as such, but the main salient points are as follows. 1. A new Chairman, President and Finance Director of England Golf have all been appointed. 2. The new Strategic Plan is out and it is on the England Golf website. To be fair, it's very similar to the previous one. 3. Worldwide handicapping will be with us by the 1 January England golf and the RandA have ed most people with a survey and hopefully you have all put your two pennies worth in. 4. The rulebook is being re-written, which I believe is being somewhat tricky!!. 5. Although last year, the voting members voted to keep the board size at 15, rather than reducing it to 12, England Golf have come back to the voting members to pursue the reduction of the size of the board to 12. This is due to pressure from Sports England to bring us in line with the with other national governing bodies, and this is will be discussed further at the General Meeting in August. The working group for the championships meeting, which I attended, I felt was fairly positive and it seems likely that we should be able to have match finals for the girls and senior women sometime in the future. And hopefully England Golf give support to the regional events via branding, finance and supporting referees and the like. Regarding regional events can you remind all your members to support the Bowmaker at Lyme Regis on 19 September, the Foursomes at the Bristol Golf Club on 5 October. The main Southwest Championships is at Churston Golf Club on 3 September and can you please ask the ladies and as many of the girls at your golf club to enter. We moved the date of the main Championship to specifically try and get the girls to attend and at the moment we do not have that many entries, so there is a real possibility it could be cancelled. iii Treasurers Report Lindsay Beaumont Our bank balances as at 30 June 2017 were: Current account 7, Deposit account 26, Total 33, Approximately 5,700 has been received so far this year for competition entries and just over 9,000 from affiliation fees. The amounts above include 4, attributable to the juniors, including the 1,000 donated by the DCLGA ladies. LB 11/7/2017 A query followed regarding the amount of the balance in the bank, and how we perhaps should be using it to encourge all age groups to play golf. Erica Howard (BroadstoneGC) Lindsay explained that none of the July expenditure was included in this balance, this included the cost and disturbance fees for County Week
Sheila explained that the cost of County Week was a lot and we also need to keep funds in the bank for unexpected need. iv Handicap Advisor - Ann Talbot Please can I remind all golfers to return their scores attained in Non-Qualifying Events Away from their Home Club. It would also be appreciated if Competition Committees could also return the scores of the top five places at their Open Meetings. These scores will only be used at the Annual Review at the end of the playing year. The R&A and USGA are conducting market research around the world, to gather insights and feedback directly from golfers, on the key principles of the development of a World Handicap System. You are invited to visit the website and complete the survey. Request for this information asap Dawn ed out following the meeting v County Junior Organisers Report July 14 th 2017 Kay Everett (Read by the Captain in her absence) Since the last Delegates meeting the Girls, both the Academy Squads and the County Squad have continued with their training sessions under the auspices of our Coach Mike Dodd at Sturminster Marshall. Numbers however, with the County Squad, have been down owing to School Examinations and Club Commitments. Something perhaps that the Junior Committee need to address for the future. We have played two Inter County Matches. One against Wiltshire at Cumberwell Park, and one against Devon at Exeter Golf and Country Club. The first encounter with Wiltshire was a very friendly affair and played with great team spirit on both sides. The format was foursomes and the result ended up in an honourable draw. In the second match played against Devon the format was agreed as Singles Match play. All the matches were close, and the result was a win for Devon, Let us hope we beat them at Junior Inter Counties in 10 days time. The girls are all reducing their handicaps and in our Junior Championships the handicaps of 11 of the 15 girls competing range from And the remaining 4 are not far behind. The Team for the Junior Inter Counties is as follows: Becky Dodd Captain Sturminster Marshall Alex Cornell Vice Captain Parkstone Becky Hobell Broadstone Charlotte Heeps Ferndown Georgina Wrixon The Ashley Wood GC Lauren Purchase Broadstone
Molly Kington Scarlett Williams Came Down Parkstone. So if anybody wants to come and support us at Exeter Golf and Country Club the girls would be really pleased to see you, and you will see some superb Golf. Many thanks Ladies for the continued support of your clubs for Junior Golf. Kay Everett CJO. vi Veterans Captain s Report Julia Norman The Vets Spring meeting was held at Sherborne on 3 rd April and was a great success attracting 42 pairs thanks to the splendid effort of all the delegates who helped drum up support for this event. The winners of the Cumberledge Ware Spoons were Debbie Driver and Chris Hobson from Broadstone. It was good to see that the 6 main prizes all went to different clubs. The Autumn Meeting is at Bulbury Woods on Friday 22 nd September and once again I am pleading for delegates to drum up support within their clubs for this event. To this end I have brought a few posters and entry forms with me today should anyone need a copy. A reminder that the Millennium Rose Bowl is presented at the AGM to the club with the highest aggregate of 2 scores from Spring and Autumn. Currently there are several clubs who could easily win this but they will need to have at least 2 sets of pairs entered into the Autumn meeting to qualify. As an added incentive my Vets committee have agreed to give the winning club a cheque for 40 for their ladies section. So please encourage anyone over 60 in your club to enter. The County Matches are underway: We played Somerset away at Enmore Park, in the rain, and won 4/3; then Devon at Bulbury Woods where we won 5 ½ / 1 ½ Next week we play both Hampshire and Cornwall away. If we can manage to beat Cornwall we will win the South West Shield but they are tough competitors fixtures are now all confirmed and on the website. Our 2 away fixtures will be at Erlestoke against Wiltshire and East Devon against Devon, which I am sure will prove very popular. 8 Rules of the Association - Tracy Bryant - Vice Captain We are proposing a change to the way in which the Captain and Vice Captain s Terms run. At the moment we have a Vice Captain for two years alongside a Captain who serves their term for those two years. At the end of the two year period, the Captain leaves and the Vice Captain takes over as Captain and a new Vice Captain is nominated by the Excecutive Committee. I have found it extremely difficult to find a Vice Captain despite casting my net far and wide although I do have someone in mind who is interested, but is not available until next year. It would be very difficult for me to operate as Captain without a VC. It got me thinking that perhaps we could run the system in a slightly different way that would help me now and benefit future captains. I am suggesting that we changed the way things are done and instead of the present system, we have a Vice Captain for one year. A Captain for two years and a new position of Immediate Past Captain. The role of the IPC will be to help the Captain when required, run the Second Team and be a member of the Executive Committee without voting rights. In other words, she will be there to add her experience to any discussion but will not be able to vote against the incumbent Captain. This change may make it easier to get volunteers for the positions as the IPC role would, apart from running the Second Team for a year, taper off as the present Captain s role proceeds. In
other words it is not such an onerous long-term task. It will also mean that any future Captain can request help advice from the previous Captain who will be vastly experienced. In line with this, we are open to discussion about how we run the Presidency/Vice Presidency in order to make it more attractive to volunteers. There are several options for this We could run a one-year VP with a two-year Presidency, although then Captain and President s years won t necessarily run concurrently. We could have a two-year Presidency with no VP, but a lead in period in the year before to attend some meetings/fixtures etc in order to get to know the ropes. Or we could leave it as it is, though that still leaves us the problem of getting ladies to commit to the role for four years. Q. Are all present in agreement with these proposed changes. Proposed by Vickey Kardas Dorset Golf and Country Club Seconded by Cindy Brown Sherborne GC Grace Burke Vice President Tracy has given you the back ground to why we need to have this discussion but at the time of sending out the rules to you as Delegates the second option of no Vice President but still retain the President for two years hadn t been mentioned. I personally think this would be the better outcome, the Captain and President would still serve together for two years but for the President - no four year commitment. Being the President of Dorset Ladies is an honour and a privilege and the possible changes will not affect me. We do have to look at things now, everyone has busy lives, whether working or retired, longer holidays, grandchildren to look after and husbands and partners retiring earlier so our time is more limited. Val Ford from Parkstone GC has agreed to be Vice President but is happy to serve which ever option we vote for. Val has been playing golf for thirty years and a member of Parkstone GC for twenty years, she is also Captain of Dorset Senior Ladies. The option of shadowing the President for a period before taking office was mentioned by Ann and can be discussed once a decision has been made. She thanked Dawn for her hard work and repeated the need for Delegates to approach any Club members who they think might like to join the Executive Committee. Thank you. The President thanked the Executive Committee and Delegates for their support over the past two years. She said that it had been an honour for her to serve as President for the County Association and had thoroughly enjoyed the role.
