Dean s Comments at THE MEADOWS SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2016 The MSOA has added an additional service to these chartcomments, which we hope are supplementing your own insight and handicapping abilities and allowing you to cash in for more, more frequently. It is called Outsiders To Watch (OTW), and it focuses on horses who showed more ability on the racetrack than the charted line may at first indicate, and also who figure to go off at decent odds in their next start. (We aim for horses in the 6-1 range; sometimes a horse gets an easy spot next time and is bet much more heavily; sometimes he draws a bad post and has no shot, as reflected in 50-1 odds.) We indicate these Outsiders To Watch with an *asterisk placed before the name of the horse in the chartcomments. They are usually 6-10 horses per card getting this designation. We find it is worthwhile to follow up on these horses in their next start (up to 10 days is preferred, though is acceptable), and that it is good to follow up on their second race after a *star performance if that second race comes within a 23- day period. These horses can be played to win on in any position they often serve as good underneath horses in gimmicks, adding value when there is an unbeatable favorite in the race. (In fact, recent research shows that this may be the best method of using them, rather than straight- out win bets.) Good luck with the MSOA s *Outsiders To Watch sometimes not for the faint of heart, but always interesting! From MEADOWS CHARTCOMMENTS, WED , race 12: *CLOUD BURST made the lead, pushed a foe past a 26.3 opener all the way to the 3/8, yielded but quickly was on the retake, tried to keep the winner out but was all done ¾ after very hard usage - - *1 st time back: R12, post eight, 79-1, not a contender. - - *2 nd time back: R12, post three, WIRE- to- WIRE at $139.20! FIRST RACE IDYLLIC BEACH let the early swooper go by, came out 3/16 and had the lead before the ¼, rated until approaching the 11/16, when a horse moved up, and went her third quarter in 27.2 (and the latter eighth in 13 and small change), finished out in 28.1 without being threatened. AGENT Q tucked midpack at the 1/8, had a horse at her wheel from early on the second turn but didn t come out until getting in gear 9/16, rushed up to retuck in the pocket ¾ as the winner drew clear, did well to stay as close to that one as she did. INVERSE HANOVER lagged the gate a bit then made a small break 50 yards before the start, recovered from way out of it with a giant last 1/8 to be along for the distant third. PITTSTOP DANIKA swung wide in the stretch, and gained, but not as quickly as the show horse and was photoed out of that position. TARDY FOR THE PARTY came out on the turn to avoid being shuffled behind the tiring pocketsitter, evenly. TERRORTINA crossed right over from the outside, yielded before the ¼, gapped out from before the ¾. WELL WHAT S NEW went outside early, finally got cover then gapped,
steadied going around the backstretch breaker, never close. ZANE HANOVER was backing out to follow cover 5/8 when he took a stumblestep and then made a break. SECOND RACE WATCH WHAT YOU SAY was not with the three- wide first pack of leavers, went up as they found positions but quickly would have been quarter- mover #3 and ducked in at the ¼, did come first- up to the half and fought with SOMEOMENSOMEWHERE past a fast ¾ fully through the last 3/8 of a mile, responded to light but steady urging to get by that foe. SOMEOMENSOMEWHERE was away third, just got out in front of the winner and was quarter- mover #2, had to go a fast pace, quite game in the stretch. SAPPHIRE BREEZE got a great trip behind the winner, three- wide headstretch, paced well but a step behind the top two. IDEAL PAN left between horses, made the lead to the first turn and yielded just past the 1/8, was quarter- mover #1 and yielded again for the pocket, gapped slightly on the far turn, Lightning Lane, good. RISKY ROMANCE was fourth- over, four- wide late turn and had good late kick. GOTTHISONE was third- over, blindswitched, evenly while going all she could. ANNA D was three- wide to the first turn to the lead just past the 1/8, saw the same two she went around come back around her on quarter- moves, fell back in the lane. CAMERA LADY could not contend. THIRD RACE GLASSINE HANOVER left between horses to get the lead at the 1/8, yielded then retook, went (as a 2PF on July 9) individual splits of 28, 27.4, and 27.4, then came home in 28.2 and needed it to hold off the steady close of BETTOR S UP to set a stake record of 1:52. BETTOR S UP angled a four- tuck going to the first turn, gapped during the second quarter, then got closer and came raw past the 5/8, kept getting closer and closer and closer to the leader in a very brave effort. CAVIART ALLY was three- wide before the first turn, got the lead 3/16, yielded to the winner and did as best as she could in the pocket, to the Lightning Lane but couldn t quite go with the top two, which certainly is no disgrace. BLINKY BEACH moved three- wide on the far turn and was a distant next over MAKE MINE MOCHA, who also closed in the lane while widest. DANGEROUS WOMAN moved out to the 5/8 but gapped. LOVE LOVE ME DO was shuffled when BEACH CLUB tired at the ¾, but never made up ground. BEACH CLUB stayed semiconnected in third until nearing the ¾ then backed up. FOURTH RACE In a race that had a lot of midrace gappers who finished very well even though the last half was faster than the first (that s 2YO racing): KEYSTONE RAMPAGE gapped early, and down the back, and looked all- out to keep up to the ¾, but then downshifted and rapidly made up ground, led headstretch, won easily. SOMESLEAZETOPLEASE was loose in the pocket at at least two points, but then angled three- wide headstretch and was closing very nicely. GIGI FROM FIJI crossed right over before the first curve, made gaps in the field with a 27.4 first quarter and a 28 third quarter, but then didn t have enough at crunch time. SWEETEST EMOTION was another who left a decent gap at at least two different spots, then was progressing rapidly late. THE OTHERS were far back, EMILY R HANOVER because of a break 100 feet before the start.
FIFTH RACE And now the bread- n- butter overnight horses, mostly fast- class variety SCOTTY LAUXMONT left right to the top and forced tucks, rated the half, drew clear in the last ¼. FOILEDONCEMORE was three- wide leaving, got into the three- hole at the 1/8, pinned in then cleared to go outside past midturn as the pocket horse gapped, got second. SIPPIN ON SUDS sat in, angled behind the place horse and then wider, OK late. ALL DOWN THE LINE raced into the pocket leaving, tired gradually the last ¼. BLISSFUL VOYAGE swung four- wide from last and won a three- way picture for the last check. SOUTHWIND MAYHEM was uncovered into the second turn, got to the winner s wheel past the 5/8 but then soon was giving ground. RACIN RYAN gapped second- over, blindswitched, never gained prominence. FEELIN LUCKY was third- over, three- wide on the turn but didn t have very much. SIXTH RACE RIP THIS JOINT was head- down four- then three- wide early to the top past the 1/8, went fast odd- numbered quarters, the latter because of the strong first- over challenge, but was drawing clear again late. ARI S TURN was under constant encouragement early to maintain good forward racing position and worked out a pocket trip, stayed close and reclaimed second right on the end as ARTHUR PENDRAGON tired a bit. The latter was three- wide leaving, took back to tuck midpack to the 3/16, came out raw 5/8 and completed a 27.1 third quarter putting the leader under attack, gave a good battle through midstretch, then tired slightly, losing second very late. CELTIC PRINCE got to second- over but gapped some. STONEFIRE HANOVER left two- wide and took back to third, gapped at the 5/8. THUNDER STRUCK never made his presence felt. INDY INGOT left behind the first wave, could have had a 4- tuck 1/8 but elected to press on, was moving up when making a break before the quarter, never a major factor thereafter. SEVENTH RACE MR RIGHT HANOVER forced tucks and went right down the road, with no threats until the stretch, then had horses coming three- wide behind him, gave some ground (in a 28.2 last quarter) but prevailed. BLAKE NORTH raced in the pocket from the first turn, couldn t go with the leader upper stretch but then narrowed in while angling a path over, photoing *DR DRAKE RAMORAY. The latter got early positioning, out at the half and got good second- over cover, three- wide headstretch and finished solidly on the far outside. MITTCENT VAN GOGH was three- wide to the first turn, tucked third 1/8, back out and first- up nearing the 5/8, good effort. DOC BETTS BUCKEYE got a spot early, gapped out ¾, photoed PV DRAGON for the last check. The latter was shuffled a bit when the former tired, but had stretch clearance and still could not gain. KINGS BEACH gapped third- over; he and THE OTHERS were not major influences. EIGHTH RACE DAPPER DUDE, first- time nasal strip as noted in the racecall, acted like a horse who had extra air capacity in the stretch, as he gunned away in 13 or so to go right to the top, raced unpressured but sped up down the back knowing that company would soon come, did near the ¾ in UNLOCKED, battled that one hard, nose- to- nose late turn into the stretch, then had the most late in a big race. *SAM HILL angled wide from last and was moving very strongly through the stretch. UNLOCKED gapped to the 3/8,
uncovered 5/8 and made a hard challenge around the turn into the stretch, but couldn t sustain it late. EASY AGAIN gapped second- over, then was hemmed in as he maintained two- wide position and went evenly while the first- over tired and the wide one was on his right, angled clear too late. TECHTOR HANOVER left rapidly, sat the two- hole, may ve been bottomed out a bit. CAMMIKEY was briefly out 5/8 but went right back in, Lightning Lane but couldn t gain. NINTH RACE Wind was noticeably against the horses coming through the stretch, as revealed via the flag LYONS JOHNNY used track geometry to the absolute max, pushing the chalk to a 26 quarter before releasing and causing others to grab leather, stayed right in the two- hole, to the Lightning Lane and got by nearing deep stretch, an *Outsider To Watch returning $ INCREDIBLE DRAGON came out ¾ with cover, wide in the lane, very good late but in gear just a little too late. AIMO HANOVER was three- wide to the 1/8 then dropped in behind cover until tucking third to the ¼, popped back out raw 11/16, engaged the leader midturn and raced head- to- head with him from late turn to the wire, in the middle of the three- horse picture for the deuce. BILBO HANOVER was urged leaving, hung all of a brutal quarter and a bit more before getting the top, didn t back it off much, had a hard challenge from midturn, very game to the wire. BROOKLYN FLIGHT was behind dull cover, had a good last 1/8. I M BANKSY had virtually no shot from this spot. FINDING TERROR was never a factor. *THE PEPPERONI KID was four- wide almost to the 3/16 in the 26 opener, took back to a tuck past the 3/16, then came out 5/8, went back in as a tired horse after the big early usage. TENTH RACE HE S DONE IT ALL went outside behind the parked horse 3/8, three- wide past the 5/8 to two- wide raw before the ¾, steadily advanced and made the lead 7/8, had to stay strong to defeat SILVERHILL BLAZE. The latter was fourth- over, moved four- wide before the ¾ and gained three- wide through the last ¼, was in striking position headstretch but just came up shy in an impressive race nonetheless. AMERICAN PAPARAZZI got to the early lead, yielded, shuffled a bit down the back then outside behind the first sweeper to the ¾ keeping the other sweeper three- wide through the turn while in a blindswitch, was blocked until midstretch, stayed blocked but from that point looked all- out, good race. *SHARKY S WAY was caught in 3/8 and shuffled, angled four- wide in the lane and did well late to almost make third. WANT ME made the lead into the first turn, pushed a foe to the 3/16 and yielded for the pocket, Lightning Lane but didn t have a solid late response. MIDNIGHT GAMBOL was three- wide to the 1/8 and two- wide to the 3/16 in search of the lead, got it and cut the pace, was pressured by the winner around the far turn into the stretch and gave way. EXPENSIVE TOY also was caught in 3/8, shuffled, to the deep Lane but didn t gain. ODIN BLUE CHIP never factored. NATIVE DUDE went up two lengths off the first group, left uncovered 3/16 and then rimmed raw throughout, looped past the 5/8. ELEVENTH RACE KINGOFTHEJUNGLE was king of the lead early, let the outside two quick starters scrap for command then came out on the second turn to reclaim the crown of the field at the half, went 27.1 (with the wind) trying to bottom these out and did, tiring late but had enough of a lead. COLOSSAL was outside almost 3/16 to make the lead, yielded 5/16 but then retook, going by entering turn two, and had again
yielded by the end of turn two, struggled to stay close in the fast third quarter, then fought gamely in the stretch. TELL US MORE vacated fourth 11/16, never could reach the front ones but went on steadily as the pace slowed. WE SAID SO was on the move past the 5/8 and got cover, but it was not very helpful, wide, OK. SJ S BLISSFUL GUY sat in, blocked on the far turn, but not that strong late. CHACHING HANOVER was three- wide almost to the 3/16 and two- wide to near the 5/16 in pursuit of the lead through and past a good quarter, yielded, nothing left in the stretch. DAFINATY swung widest in the lane and finished well. THE OTHER TWO did not reach contention. TWELFTH RACE SHADOWS DREAM was third- over in a very lively flow, three- wide late turn, kept on coming strongly, got to the top nearing deep stretch then held off GOLD STAR LAMBEAU on his back, helping Outsiders To Watch players at $ GOLD STAR LAMBEAU got as good a fourth- over from eighth trip as you can get, never stopped scrapping to gain more. NATIVE ART had cover, left uncovered 11/16 and couldn t keep with his former cover, ducked in headstretch, went past him inside late. LYONS MEANDRAGON was uncovered at the 3/8, speed- grinded to the lead 11/16 and opened a 2½ length lead which he maintained to nearing midstretch, then visibly hit the wall. GREAT ARTIST was outleft and took the early pocket, moved before the quarter to get the lead then yielded to a looped horse 3/8, gapped on the turn, shuffled a little, but not looking to have all that much late. *K SLATER was caught in and shuffled all the way to last, was coming on very strongly in the stretch. WESTWARD HANOVER was never in contention. WHOYOUCALLINGAFOOL was badly looped, went up at the 1/8, followed GREAT ARTIST then went by him to the lead 3/8, yielded to the first- over 11/16 and faded. REAL CATCH was fastest early to the front on the first turn, yielded near the ¼, inside, tired in the last 1/4. THIRTEENTH RACE LINCOLNJAMES gradually went around the pole horse, third past the 1/8, then quarter- moved and kept on rolling, still strong late when his foes were not striding out, in a mile only 3/5 slower than the Preferred likely more to come from this one. SEVENTH SECRET briefly took the pocket at the 1/8 then decided to go on, on top by the ¼, yielded, did well to stay as close to the strong winner as he did. CAPITAL ACCOUNT left on top, saw two rush by between the 3/16 and the 3/8, couldn t stay connected in the stretch. WARP FACTOR THREE went three- wide off of cover midturn, OK. ARCHETTO HANOVER followed three- wide cover and got the last check. TSM CRUSIN USA chased the fast half then came out raw 9/16, got to the wheel of the pocket horse then fell back. THE OTHERS were never factors.
