Dean s Comments at THE MEADOWS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2017 The MSOA starts its second year of featuring * Outsiders To Watch, horses who both performed better than their last charted line may suggest, and who also figure to be a decent price (we aim at 6-1 or above) in their next start. *Outsiders To Watch horses have an asterisk (*) before their names in the comments. We find it is worthwhile to follow up on these horses in their next start (up to 10 days is preferred, though is acceptable), and that it is good to follow up on their second race after a *star performance if that second race comes within a 23- day period (or if their first race after a *star occurs within 23 days). These horses can be played to win or in any position they often serve as good underneath horses in gimmicks, adding value when there is an unbeatable favorite in the race. (In fact, research shows that frequently this may be the best method of using them, rather than straight- out win bets.) We note two things at the start of 2017 that follow trends we noticed when we began his feature a year ago: 1) while for most of the year the first- time back horses outperform the second- time back horses, the REVERSE is true in the chillier temperatures, when 2) these *Outsiders To Watch tend to be a bit more profitable than they are during the normal, warmer part of the racing season. Good luck with the MSOA s *Outsiders To Watch sometimes not for the faint of heart, but always interesting! A GOOD START to FEBRUARY for *OUTSIDERS TO WATCH! Saturday, February 4: *JUMPINTHEJAILHOUSE ($23.60) and *STEP ON IT ($15.80) FIRST RACE Right at freezing (32 o F) but a fast track and a +0 variant Early on the wind appeared a quartering one, a tailwind for horses on the second turn, but later it went around to be a stretch headwind *INDIGO ART, in his first start in three months, was last at the half but then came home in , tailing cover down the back, then gaining powerfully when three- wide on the turn, looked like he could have gone around again may be able to climb the classladder a rung or two right away. IT S JUST LUCK sat in third, angled out to three- wide headstretch, found his best strides and did well late to be along for second over SPORTS COLOGNE. The latter left and got into the pocket, to the Lightning Lane, almost made the deuce. *SILVER SAGE was hard to take back early, settled in 3/16, then first- over off the second turn, missed second by less than a length. OBSCENE BLUE CHIP headed down the road and got a soft half, but couldn t motor with this group late. DINGER FOUR looked to be struggling at the 3/4; JAKE S SANTANNA was gapping earlier than that. SECOND RACE There was a recall as it appeared that STEP ON IT had her overcheck dislodge about 50 yards before the start, taking a bad step; the horse was taken back to the paddock, where the problem was quickly corrected, and they went right back to the gate STEP ON IT left quickly to the lead, yielded, came raw

out of third 11/16 and went right by the leader midturn, was confidently handled most of the stretch, then was given a few reminders as LOCKWOOD GRACE narrowed in late. The latter was out to the 1/8 for the lead, yielded to the early brusher, came out behind the winner midturn and went up to challenge, never found quite a high enough gear although far ahead of the rest. SOME MORE LOVE left a small gap at points during the first ¾, then came out late turn and held third. YOU ME AND ROSIE made a break in front of the paddock before the actual start, then trotted a lot in the stretch to get a fourth- place check. BORN TROTTEN didn t have much. SIMPLY SASSY moved out at the 5/8, got cover 11/16 but gapped it. DEFIANT VICTORY went out from third 3/16 and rushed to the top, put up a quick half, but had no answer when the winner came charging on the turn. THIRD RACE TO HIS CREDIT has finally found himself at age four, here three- wide past the 1/8 to the lead near the ¼, then sprinting home in may be more wins in his immediate future, too. ROCCO left between horses and made the lead before the 3/16, yielded for the pocket, stayed plugged- in until the 11/16, then fought hard late to be the distant second over MATTAROLLA. The latter pushed the leaving threesome, yielding, to the Lightning Lane, close for second. SAID IT ALL came out at the half, was gotten into by SUBLIMINAL briefly, didn t exhibit much speed initially and was urged, picked up his pace a bit down the back, held OK in the battle for minor honors. STAR OF TERROR got the last check finishing widest. FOILEDBYTHEBEACH didn t show much the last 5/16. A YANKEE FEELIN steadied behind the trouble past the ½, tried to gain three- wide on the far turn but could not. SUBLIMINAL spotted, then was second- over, ran up on SAID IT ALL when that one did not go on, with a resultant dx, the first use of that symbol at The Meadows, which means a break caused by the driver here when his horse ran up on the one in front. FOURTH RACE The wind has started shifting towards what would be the normal Meadows stretch headwind TRUSTWORTHY KID left shopping for a tuck and was three- wide into the first bend, got his spot when CANTAB LINDY broke into the first turn and dropped in the 3- hole, vacated same 11/16 and moved sharply to go by BARN GIRL on the far turn, had to be on his game in the lane as that foe didn t give way at all. BARN GIRL was three- wide leaving, then worked to the lead before the 1/8, under a hold rating, then sprinted down the backstretch, fought very hard even once passed. NOTHINBUTANALLSTAR left between horses and wound up in the pocket, couldn t go with the top two in the last stanza but held off TSM PHOTO BUGGER. The latter moved outside and came home in 55.4 but was too far back. TRICKY NICK struggled to keep up at a few points. SHOW TICKET was never in it. WELL SPICED was keeping up until getting a little steppy 11/16, then ran midturn. CANTAB LINDY was the innermost of a three- across team early but jumped into turn one. ANGELS RANSOM broke an 1/8 before the start. FIFTH RACE MIGHTY TOUCH was away in the pocket, then moved before the 3/16 to grab command, got a 59.1 middle half, which was enough to allow him to draw off in the last 3/16. SCOOTCHIE was wide leaving to the early lead, yielded for the two- hole, kept at it steadily as second- best. CAFFEINE RUSH left between horses and tucked third at the 1/8, out first- up at the half, challenged until past the ¾, then gave a little

ground. I VE GOT WAYS was third- over, went inside after DOUBLE LAUXMONT made a break ¾, evenly. SO DREAMING was in a good position but didn t have much punch today. WHITTLER HANOVER didn t make an impact here. OBEY ONE KANOBEY had to pause as right behind the breaking DOUBLE LAUXMONT, then no factor. OUTSMART ME never factored. DOUBLE LAUXMONT gapped along the inside down the back then ran at the ¾. SIXTH RACE SPORTS AGENT showed as much character as Jerry Maguire, three- wide then two- wide with cover to the 3/16, then left out raw, grinded forward relentlessly, went to the lead midstretch, but didn t have the win until the wire as MAXXINISTA roared up. The latter left some then backed off into the first turn, was stuck third- inside, out into the lane behind the winner then was able to angle outside him with 50 yards to go, made up ground rapidly, a bit unlucky. HA TAYLOR made the lead before the 1/8, yielded for the pocket, Lightning Lane, OK, but the two in front of him had harder trips. COUNT ON KAMI backed out to follow the winner going to the second turn, advanced with his cover, went three- wide past midturn, couldn t reach. *SPEEDY RENDEZVOUS stayed inside, went into the deep Lightning Lane and made up good ground. KEYSTONE WONDER was three- wide towards the first turn then two- wide 3/16, made the top, had hounding pressure from the winner, came up short in the stretch. COMING UP TOUGH had to swing wide around a breaker headstretch, gained as the pace slackened. YANKEE DOUGLAS gapped third- over, then was doing better on the far turn, swung three- wide but broke headstretch, did come back some. UP FRONT MURRAY became Far Back Murray after breaking 100 feet before the start. SEVENTH RACE FEELING REAL slid in going to the 1/8, came out raw 3/8 to brush to the lead by the ½, went a fast third quarter but still had WUZZUP TONIGHT charging at her as those two left the field behind, inseparable the last 1/8 and may have kissed wheels early stretch, with FEELING REAL just getting the nod. WUZZUP TONIGHT went out well to the front, pushed a foe to the 5/16 before giving up the lead, came out raw 5/8, reached the leader ¾ and was head- to- head with that one from late on the turn, gave her all in a fierce battle, just shy. THEWAYULOOKTONIGHT was parked 5/16 until hitting the top, yielded at the ½, stayed with the top two until into the far turn, then held on to be a distant third. DANDY S DIVA took until the 3/16 to settle in a spot, then was underway again 5/16, gained cover, lost it at the half, couldn t reach possible new cover late on the backside, but kept going on gamely. *GALYNS GIFT was caught inside, had traffic trouble in upper stretch, closed well once finding clearance. OFFICIAL TREASURE had cover but gapped, then three- wide on the far turn but couldn t get into the thick of it. JOHN S JESSI BIRD did not feature; nor did TUCKERED OUT. EXOTIC FLING was forwardly- placed but gapped from the ¾. ANGRY SHELBY was away last from the second tier, came wheeling out at the ¼ and looked hard to handle, rushed up three- wide to the 3/8 but couldn t make an impact and faded. EIGHTH RACE THE CATAMOUNT KID was looped leaving and had cover almost to the 3/16, made the lead just off the first turn, went 27.3 down the back and left this collection well behind. WESTERN REDHOT was three- wide to the first turn, pushed until the 3/16 to make the lead, then yielded past the ¼ to the winner, started unplugging from the half behind the winner, but still managed to beat everybody else home.

MARS MAN left, got the lead, surrendered at the 3/16, gapped the gapping pocket horse on the turn, still managed third. *TERROR O didn t settle inside until the ¼, stayed in, was behind a wall of horses the first half of the stretch, then found some clearance and finished well to edge out PRO SIDE; the latter sat last, then showed some belated pace in the Lightning Lane. WEGOTTATRUCKYEA got a forward spot early, first- up 3/8 but never got close to the leader in the 56.3 back half and faded in the last ¼. ZERO THE HERO gapped three- wide cover, then went four- wide late turn as that cover tired, not too much. DALE S DESIRE was second- over, moved three- wide at the 5/8, looked still in contention for a minor share headstretch but fell back, then came back to the paddock with b.e. NINTH RACE JUMPINTHEJAILHOUSE came out at the half and blasted uncovered in 27 down the backstretch (by now with most of a tailwind) to go right by the tough leader, got a little tired in deep stretch but was far enough ahead that the late charge of MIKE THE TRADER was not enough. The latter made the lead towards the 1/8 then yielded to sit the good trip behind the chalk, angled out once clear midstretch and ate into the winner s margin, but just a little belatedly. CHARLES VII was three- wide into turn one, made the lead at the 3/16, didn t have enough brush to keep the winner ¾ out but kept up determinedly thereafter. BOOTSWITHTHEFUR tipped wide off cover headstretch and wasn t far back. SJ S SUPER STAR forced the early action, yielded, OK in the Lightning Lane late. DRIFT AWAY backed outside before the 5/8 but couldn t keep up with the winner. REIGNINGBLACKSWAN never got a call. WINNING WIZARD was looking to follow the winner s move at the half but broke. ROCKANDROLL JESSE was giving the gate respect, then broke shortly into the race. TENTH RACE ITS A DEW THING left and maintained the pocket through a contested pace, gapped a bit on the turn, but continued on, using the Lightning Lane and catching JOHN PAUL when that one tired late. JOHN PAUL made the lead going to the first turn, shook off two separate hard challenges and sprinted clear on the turn and into the stretch, but shortened stride late, still held for second over LONE WOLF TERROR. The latter was parked with cover from the start until going three- wide before the 5/8, to two- wide 11/16 and went on to pressure the leader, held very gamely. SAND GUNNER pulled out 5/16 behind the two parked horses, tried to get into contention three- wide but could not, then gained as the place slowed late. RT TRUTH OR DARE got away last and was behind dull cover, four- wide midturn, too much to make up. TRUEYS LAST DRAGON got hung without cover, was looped 11/16, ducked in on the far turn, didn t fade too badly. MCLASSIC and MANDALAY SPUR were not heard from. SOUTHWIND MAYHEM angled an early tuck behind the two outside leavers, but wasn t keeping up before the ¾. ELEVENTH RACE SMART AS A WHIP left quick as a flash to circle his field before the first turn, rated quarter two, then just had too much speed today to get caught. CHIPARIFFIC was third- over, three- wide with cover midturn then four- wide into the stretch, unwound with good trot but the winner was already gone. MALIBU BAY BREEZE raced into the early pocket, struggled to keep up from the 5/8 despite urging, evenly to be next. WIMBORNE HANOVER had a fine second- over trip and went three- wide midturn, but was found lacking. ZOLI spotted, then went on the attack first- over 3/8, tired the last quarter. PITTSBURGH HANOVER was

behind a dull one much of the way but still didn t show that much. DOC SIMON S DREAM was looped, found a tuck third 3/16, faded. MISTER B S WAY was gapping at the half, broke past the ¾. TWELFTH RACE MR COOLIE left well and defended pocket positioning in a very fast quarter, stayed in the two- hole until headstretch, then came outside and went right on to the lead. SHARKY S WAY tailed the winner, angled out behind him before midstretch and was OK+ late for second. GOGGLES PAISANO was looped in the fast first panel and didn t get inside until the ¼, found his best strides when taken to the Lightning Lane towards midstretch and finished willingly. INCREDIBLE DRAGON was three- wide leaving then two- wide 3/16 to the lead in a sapping 26.4, set the pace then paid the price for that quick opener in the stretch. DAFINATY was shuffled to last, had to go five- wide off the final turn, good close belatedly. PONDA RIVER was third- over, blindswitched on the far turn, inside in the lane, so- so. MISTER CHAOS was out with cover the whole way while gapping it until the 5/8 then tighter, three- wide ¾ but couldn t make further progress. *TSM CRUSIN USA was looped and three- wide almost to the ¼, then left out in the air two- wide, challenged but was given the cold shoulder, held fairly decently. OFFICIALLY YOURS was fourth- over, three- wide with cover then four- wide nearing headstretch but didn t make a dent.
