6 Q U A R T E R P A T H S Vacating Vessels sso VESSELS STALLION FARM IS no more. It s been sold to become Ocean Breeze Farm a place apparently to be devoid of American Quarter Horses. It s the end of an era. It s like the King is dead. Right from the start, which coincided with the advent of organized Quarter Horse racing, Vessels Stallion Farm was the palace of royalty, the home to American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame stallions from Clabber to Go Man Go to Beduino (TB) to First Down Dash, to families of blue hen broodmares from Do Good and her daughter Chicado V through generations including Table Tennis and Rapid Valley to Hardly Hateful and Your First Moon, to some of the most accomplished horsemen to ever throw a leg across a saddle or, for that matter, to pore over pedigrees for the breedings that put Vessels Stallion Farm atop the castle. The first time I ever set foot on the place, Vessels Stallion Farm was still right next door to Los Alamitos Race Course, still right off Katella Avenue, still right across from the strawberry fields where Mitsubishi and other corporations now are planted. It was on the site of Frank Vessels original track, right behind the brick ranch-style house that Frank and wife Grace s daughter-in-law and Los Alamitos track president Mildred Millie Vessels still called home. Even with Millie s chickens running around, Vessels Stallion Farm was a tidy little place, where farm manager Gene Chambless then was overseeing indemand stallions such as Timeto Thinkrich and Beduino. That all changed in 1984, after Millie sold Los Alamitos American Quarter Horse Hall of Famers First Down Dash and Scoop Vessels Vessels Stallion Farm is no more. By Richard Chamberlain to the parent company of Hollywood Park and relocated herself and the stallions to Bonsall, in Southern California s San Diego County. The widow of Frank Sr. s son Frank Jr., Millie and her son, Frank Scoop Vessels III (aided immeasurably by Scoop s wife Bonnie), turned a century-old, bankrupt cattle ranch into one of the finest and most successful racehorse breeding operations in the world. This is what I like to do, said Scoop, who in 2004 became president of AQHA. I enjoy the horse business. I love it. I grew up in it. I like the horses, I like the people in it. Scoop s death in an August 2010 plane crash set in motion the events that would result in the demise of Vessels Stallion Farm. But it was on that original site off Katella where Frank Vessels Sr. first matched his own Quarter Horses against anybody else who had a horse they thought could run. That was right after World War II, and those match races had gone on for only a short time before Vessels Sr., at the urging of friends, decided to up the ante with an actual card of races. On Sunday, August 3, 1947, Vessels let loose the first scheduled races on his fledgling match track that would grow up to become Los Alamitos Race Course. On that first day, there were six races with purses ranging from $50 to $100. They had a thousand people show up, and they didn t publicize it or advertise it or anything like that it was just word of mouth, Millie recalled. They had a heck of a traffic ROBBIE KNUDSEN 6 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

7 jam and everything. There was only one road to the Vessels Ranch in those days. That road was the rural highway that now is Katella, and it soon became even more jammed. Vessels went to work on folks at the state capital to obtain pari-mutuel wagering on Quarter Horses. After three years of lobbying and fighting intense opposition by Thoroughbred and harness horse interests, Los Alamitos conducted its first pari-mutuel Quarter Horse races on December 4, 1951, the first day of an 11-day meet besieged by 10 days of rain. And I mean, we had to work, Millie said. At the end of every day, Frank (Jr.) and I took a truck and loaded up all the garbage cans to haul off. And we d be here till 10 p.m. pulling cars out of the mud with a Fordson tractor. Back To the Future IN 1946, AS A WEALTHY 48-YEAR-OLD OIL WILDCATTER AND industrial contractor, Frank Sr. bought 435 acres of coastal alkali plain between the communities of Los Alamitos and Cypress, west of Anaheim and north of Long Beach. He intended to raise Polled Herefords, but the ground wasn t suited to beef cattle, who suffered from high concentrations of molybdenum in the grass and contracted bovine pneumonia from the low-hanging fog that the locals call tule (pronounced two-lee and often accompanied by colorfully descriptive adjectives best left unsaid here). That was but a temporary setback. Vessels already was turning his attention elsewhere. A transplanted Kentuckian, from the heart of the bluegrass at Paris, Vessels had been living in California since he was a 22-year-old roustabout in the oil fields, and had reached his comfortable economic status by founding construction firms that by the time he died (in 1963, of a heart attack at the AQHA convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma) had filled bids on structures as diverse and farflung as a launch pad at Cape Canaveral and a steam-generating plant in Hawaii. Now he wanted to get back to his Kentucky roots with horses, and with the war over, it seemed a good time to get in the horse business. Vessels picked up a few Quarter Horse geldings to work his cattle and then decided he needed a few mares to breed better cow horses. He already was hanging with the shorthorse crowd and he knew he wanted good horses, the kind he had seen running in 1941 at the Speed Trials in Tucson, Arizona, where he watched the Iron Horse Clabber clinch the first world running championship with a come-frombehind victory. By the time the war was over, he was hauling to the match races so popular in Arizona, Nevada and up and down the length of California, and he knew that to get those good horses, he had to go to where they came from. So he and Huntley Gordon, a friend who ranched at Chino, California, searched Arizona and on through New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. They spent quite some time on the road and picked up two truckloads of good mares, but could find no suitable stallion. Then Vessels heard a rumor that Clabber himself could be bought, if the price was right. Confirming the rumor required $5,000, quite a sum back then, but the friends figured Clabber was quite a horse and the son of My Texas Dandy took up residence on the West Coast. The stallion didn t last long out there. After one year of service, Clabber died of a head injury in 1947, when he reared and hit his head on an overhead beam in what then served as the stud barn on what would become Vessels Stallion Farm. But Vessels and Gordon already were beginning to get some nice foals from the stallion. Never one to do anything halfway, Vessels that same year hooked a disc to his tractor and plowed a straightaway and halfmile oval on his ranch. Then he invited a group of buddies over to enjoy some of his wife s spaghetti and see his new track, and the following Sunday, they came back with their horses to match a few races. Offering to let them train free of charge during the week, Vessels made his ranch available for racing on the weekends and upgraded the facility with a starting gate and eventually bleachers and other amenities. At the same time, of course, he and his family were laying the foundation for what would become the legendary breeding farm. The farm at Bonsall stood its first stallions in 1986, and passed into Scoop s hands when his mother died in January When we sold out at Los Alamitos, the horse business was starting to feel the crunch, Scoop recalled. We didn t want anyone to think that we were getting out of the business altogether. That s one reason why we built a farm like this. Those were still the days when it was never going to end, so we built a little larger than we probably should have. But we wanted to make a statement that we are committed to the business. It was more than 20 years ago that Scoop made that statement, reflecting on the building of the beautiful ranch nestled among coastal mountains by the Bonsall River. Fast forward to today: The all-time second-leading breeder of racing Quarter Horses, Vessels Stallion Farm in its own name has bred 14 champions, 88 total stakes winners and the earners of more than $30 million. Again, just to be clear, that s in Vessels own name, and does not including horses bred in partnership, or a single title, stakes win or dollar earned by any offspring of a Vessels stallion by anybody else. The result today is that just about every good racing Quarter Horse has a pedigree peppered with stallions and mares that at some point or other lived in Vessels barns or grazed its pastures. Through its seven decades in business, Vessels Stallion Farm stood many, if not most, of the hottest stallions in the industry. Including those already mentioned, Vessels at one time or another was home to such Quarter Horse studs as A Classic Dash, Alamitos Bar, Dash Thru Traffic, Duplicate Copy, FDD Dynasty, Fishers Dash, No Secrets Here, Splash Bac, The Signature, Tiny Charger and Tolltac, and Thoroughbreds Apollo, Devon Lane, Direct Win, In Excess, Magical Mile and War Bam, meaning to pick one example that each of the current reigning champions owe a debt to Vessels. For all of that, Vessels Stallion Farm was more than just a horse farm. A show place that wasn t showy, the family farm at Bonsall represented the best in modern production agriculture, at different times with beef cattle and some 500 of its 1,390 acres devoted to growing corn, tomatoes, watermelons, pumpkins, strawberries and other crops, and groves of trees producing lemons, oranges and some 1.7 million pounds of avocadoes annually. In May 2014, Vessels Stallion Farm was listed for sale for $55.6 million. Vacating Vessels, the remaining horses were to be dispersed at the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale on October 29. So now it s over. The King is dead. Long live the King. Richard Chamberlain is a special contributor to the Q-Racing Journal. To comment, write to jrnlracing@aqha.org. Q-RACING JOURNAL NOVEMBER

12 U A R T E R DOWNS AT ALB SEES GAINS THE DOWNS AT ALBUQUERQUE ENDED ITS 2015 RACE MEET ON September 27, registering substantial increases in purses and wagering handle. During the 55-day split meet, which ran April 17 - June 18 and continued from September 11 to September 27, The Downs paid horsemen $9,731,741 in purses, an increase of 20 percent over the $8,093,454 paid during the track s 54-day season in The Downs paid average purses of $176,940 per day, up 18 percent from last year s average of $149,879, and the track s average-per-race purse of $18,860 marked an increase of 8 percent over the $17,518 average in The purse increases improved the quality of racing at The Downs, and that was reflected in the track s wagering handle. A total of $11,513,592 was bet on the track s live races, an increase of 29 percent over last year s total handle of $8,134,617. Daily average handle reached $209,338, up 39 percent over last year s average of $150,641, and the per-race handle of $22,313 marked a 27-percent increase over the 2014 average of $17,607. The Downs had some outstanding performances on the track as well. Reigning world champion JRC Callas First, a 5-year-old gelding racing for Brian and Dana Stroud, won the inaugural running of the 440-yard, $200,000 Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship on closing day. Another noteworthy Quarter Horse performance saw Astica, a homebred 3-year-old daughter of Jesse James Jr and 2009 champion 3-year-old filly Alice K White, break the 400-yard track record in the May 10, $60,000 Pelican Stakes (R) for state-bred 3-year-old fillies. Trained by Wes Giles for Mac and Janis Murray s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, Astica made the trip in : We d like to continue our momentum by bringing all of our big races back next year, said Downs Director of Racing Don Cook. One of the next steps will be to get these races graded. We think the money is there. We just need to stay consistent with their purses and conditions. Our Quarter Horse Championship was a huge success; drawing the world champion for the race was a nice feather in our cap, he added. I think it s just going to continue to grow and continue drawing the top horses in the country. The Downs at Albuquerque has also embarked on a renovation project of its grandstand, which is located in the heart of the city at Expo New Mexico. A new stand-alone parking lot for racing fans, located at the south end of the grandstand and accessible from the casino entrance off of Louisiana Blvd., opened in September. Grandstand building renovations include a new entrance on the south end, removing the glass from the seating area, enlarging the saddling paddock area and winner s circle, and raising the apron of the grandstand so that it s level with the racetrack itself. We re giving our paddock area a more park-like atmosphere, Cook said. And, we feel that removing the glass from the grandstand and raising the apron so that it s eyelevel with the track will improve the sightlines for our fans. All of these renovations are being done to improve the customer experience, he added. For more information on The Downs at Albuquerque, visit the track s website at END OF AN ERA VESSELS STALLION FARM IN BONSALL, CALIFORNIA, HAS BEEN SOLD to Ocean Breeze LLC, a private entity incorporated in Delaware. According to a report in Daily Racing Form, the facility will be renamed Ocean Breeze Ranch. Kevin Dickson, who managed the farm for the Vessels family, will remain with the property, which will not be a commercial enterprise in the short-term future. Vessels Stallion Farm has been a leading Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred facility in Southern California since the 1980s. The farm was sold by the family of Frank Scoop Vessels III, who died in a private-plane crash in Quarter Horse stallions standing at the farm, including leading sire FDD Dynasty, were relocated to other farms following the death of Vessels. The Vessels family, led by Scoop s late mother Mildred, built the Vessels Stallion Farm in the ranching community in northern San Diego County in the mid-1980s. The Vessels family founded Los Alamitos Race Course, and had established the original Vessels Stallion Farm adjacent to the racetrack in Cypress, California, in the late 40s, until the operation was transferred to Bonsall. At one time, Vessels Stallion Farm was the home to all-time leading Quarter Horse stallion First Down Dash, who died in The new facility is not expected to include Quarter Horses, and the remainder of the Vessels Quarter Horse holdings was dispersed at the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale on October N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

20 HANDICAPPING FAQ: TIMES Deciphering the details of times. By Andrea Caudill THE TOP PLACINGS IN ANY AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE RACE ARE often decided by hundredths or thousandths of a second, so there s no denying the importance of time. First, how is a Quarter Horse time decided? It is different from Thoroughbred racing, where the gate is set behind the actual starting line and horses and given a running start. So when Thoroughbreds break from the gate, the clock begins after several strides. The Quarter Horse race clock, however, starts the instant the gates open. The longer the race, the greater variance in finish times. So you can expect horses racing at shorter distances to have very little separation on the clock. Several factors influence times. A horse can run faster or slower based on headwinds or tailwinds pushing or slowing the horse down. In addition, track conditions, such as a muddy track surface, can cause a time to become faster or slower. Finally, external factors, such as the quality of competition pushing an individual horse, or whether or not his jockey is asking the horse for its best, will factor in to his final time. With all of this variation, how can time be handicapped more easily? There have been several systems to address this, with one of the most popular being the speed index, which was created in the 1970s to replace a letter grading system. The speed index is intended to compare horses and races run at different tracks. Every year and for every racetrack, AQHA takes the three fastest times run at recognized distances in each of the preceding three years, and averages those nine numbers to find the time that represents an SI of 100 for that distance. Other speed index ratings for each distance are figured fractionally from the time that determined the SI-100. Keep in mind that speed index rating systems are based on times run by the very best runners at each track. SIs in the 70s are pretty good, 80s are getting speedy, 90s are down-right fast and 100+ are just plain awesome. TrackMaster Speed Ratings are a more modern version of speed indexes, and use a proprietary formula that includes a raw speed rating, based on the time and distance, modified with an inter-track variant (which modifies for major differences between tracks) and then a daily track variant (which accounts for factors like weather and wind). Speed Ratings can be found in Equibase handicapping materials. The scale goes between 0-130, with the higher end being examples of a top-quality performance by a Grade 1 horse. These handicapping tips are provided by AQHA Racing and Horseplayernow.com. Look for monthly tips in the Q-Racing Journal. 20 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

22 COADY PHOTOGRAPHY Second-Career Star: Time For A Cigar Time For A Cigar captures one of his five graded stakes victories during his racing career. Watch Time For A Cigar win the 2009 Ruidoso Derby (G1).

23 A champion through and through COURTESY REBECCA FERNAU By Andrea Caudill TTHE YEAR 2009 WAS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR RACING PARTNERS Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach of New Mexico: They literally had two of the best sophomore geldings in the world One was the Thoroughbred Mine That Bird, who made one of the most memorable runs in Kentucky Derby history to take the historic race in a romp and set himself on the path to movie stardom. And then there was Time For A Cigar, the Corona Cartel gelding who won six of eight starts that year and was named his sport s champion 3-year-old gelding. Time For A Cigar was bred by Abigail Kawananakoa, and is out of the Timeto Thinkrich mare Time For A Goddess. He retired in 2013 with a career record of nine wins and three seconds in 26 starts and earnings of $468,921. His accomplishments include victories in the Ruidoso Derby (G1), Sunland Park Winter Derby (G2), Turf Paradise Championship Challenge (G3) in 2010 and 2011 and the Mr Jet Moore Handicap (G3). He also placed in the Rainbow Derby (G1) and All American Gold Cup (G2) and lit the board in the 2010 Bank of America Challenge Championship. Cigar was enjoying retirement at Allen s ranch, when fate and Allen helped him to his new career. Mine That Bird was also well retired, and became the subject for the big screen with the movie During its theatrical run, a special screening in Colorado Springs, Colorado, helped raise funds for the U.S. Air Force Academy Equestrian Center s Warrior Wellness Program. The special night included an actual appearance by Mine That Bird and his companion horse who hopped into the trailer for the trip up to Colorado was none other than Cigar. The AFA Equestrian Center and Warrior Wellness program is run by Billy Jack Barrett, who, with wife, Anne, raised nine children, both biological and adopted. One of their children is Rebecca Fernau, an experienced rider who grew up running barrels and team roping. She wanted a stable career that involved horses, and has become a vet tech. Mine That Bird and Cigar were staying at the Air Force Academy s Equestrian Center, and the group was out visiting One morning, Mark asked me if I d like to ride (Cigar), Fernau remembers. I got on him in the arena there at the Air Force Academy and was just riding him around. I got done riding him, and Mark made the comment that I looked good Now retired from racing, Time For A Cigar is under the tutelage of his new owner, Rebecca Fernau, who is teaching him how to run barrels. on him. I said, Thanks, he s a pretty nice horse. Mark said, I m glad you like him, because you own him now. I just started crying I never thought I d get to ride a horse like this, much less own one! Mark s very generous. Fernau started working to get her champion trained to be a riding horse, with the help of her mother, an accomplished Grand Prix dressage trainer. I just spent a lot of time riding Cigar in the mountains and getting him broke, Fernau said. He s pretty safe, but mom helped me a lot in getting his lead changes, keeping him soft, moving him off my leg. After that foundation, she introduced him to the barrel pattern. He feels like he really enjoys it, she said. It surprises me, for as much run as he has, how much he hunts the barrel. He won t hardly run past a barrel. Fernau describes Cigar as both highly intelligent and athletic. I think he s one of the kindest horses I ve ever been around, she said. When I first started riding him, I was like, there was no way this horse was a champion. Then I got on (Q-Racing Video) and pulled up his videos and watched some of his races. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, because I ride that horse bareback in a halter and lead rope, and my 3-year-old child rides him. Fernau currently works at Double Eagle Ranch as a vet tech, working in the breeding program and training center and having the opportunity to work with horsemen like Joe Merrick, in addition to riding a horse like Cigar. Cigar has been teaching her how to gallop a horse on the track, and this summer went to a playday event. Despite never seeing a pole bending pattern before, Fernau decided to enter him just for fun, and Cigar still finished second. That s just the kind of horse he is, she said. I think Cigar is a good ambassador for the racehorses in general. I feel like there s this common idea that racehorses are maybe not that smart or all they do is run. But Cigar is a true athlete, and he s incredibly intelligent. I m super blessed to have the opportunity to have my hands on such a nice horse. Andrea Caudill is editor of the Q-Racing Journal. 28 Watch the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap! No Quirk Here uirky wins the Millie Vessels. By Andrea Caudill SCOTT MARTINEZ Quirky cruises to her fifth consecutive victory, this in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap. ON SEPTEMBER 27, QUIRKY SAILED HOME IN THE MILDRED N. Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1), notching her fifth consecutive victory, her fourth of the year, and earning a berth to the Champion of Champions (G1) in December. The 4-year-old daughter of Stel Corona may have lived up to her name in her youth, but with maturity, she has found her place. The Dr. Edward Allred homebred is a leading contender for champion aged mare honors with her season so far, which includes winning the Charger Bar Handicap (G2), Ivan Ashment Handicap (R), California Breeders Matron Stakes (RG3) and the Millie Vessels. Ridden by Carlos Huerta for trainer James Glenn Jr., Quirky broke sharply as the 3-10 favorite, and proved best with a half-length victory and a time of : over the 400 yards. A game Jess Cuz was second, followed by Solid Connection, Blabber, champion Significant Heart, Mrs Pickens, Bring Me Home, Shake Djibouti and Chalalita. She used to do little things that would make her live up to her name, Glenn said. She s matured a lot and when a mare gets sharp, they tend to stay that way for a while. She used to be this thin, little filly, but she s now packing about 80 more pounds of muscle than last year. I think she ll like 28 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

29 the extra 40 yards in the Champion of Champions. When we were breaking her, she would stride to the moon. It was just a matter of her learning how to use her ability. Quirky has won half of her 14 career starts and has earned $322,598. Last year, she won the California Breeders Debutante Stakes (R), and then started her current win streak with a victory in the Southern California Derby (G1). The Champion of Champions entry will be the first for her trainer. It s exciting, Glenn said. Three years ago, my dad (longtime trainer James Glenn) was very sick and I wasn t sure that he would make it. The good news is that he s rallied back. He s still sick, but he s still here and now he ll get to watch (Quirky) in the Champion of Champions from his home in Arizona. Runner up Jess Cuz is also a notable story. The Double Bar S Ranch homebred was involved in a fatal accident on her way to the Ruidoso Select Sale. While she survived, she still bears scars from it. This filly is amazing, her trainer Elena Andrade said. She was traumatized a bit because of what she went through. She loves to train, but you can t put her on a walker because loud noises scare her. I baby her a lot and give her a lot of attention. She is big and powerful, but we had to work a lot with her to get her to relax in the gate. She s a survivor. She s a fighter. I ve gone through some tough things in my life, as well, so I get her. I can relate to her. Fourteen years ago to the date of the Millie Vessels, Elena s husband and top jockey Oscar Andrade was involved in a riding accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. As usual, Oscar was on hand at Los Alamitos to root for Jess Cuz. Today is the anniversary of Oscar s accident, Elena said. It would have been something else to win this race on this day. We ll keep trying. This was a huge jump for Jess Cuz and she ran a great race. She s in the trials to the Southern California Derby next. Dr. Allred has a fondness for compact but appropriate names, and Quirky s is no different. I was at the (Rolling A Ranch) looking at the babies and she just caught my eye because she would do funny and quirky little things, Dr. Allred said. I liked the name, I thought it would be catchy and people would remember it. Her sire, Stel Corona, was foaled at the turn of the millennium, a son of leading sire Corona Cartel and the very first foal out of the Streakin Six mare Our Lips Are Sealed. He made 25 starts, all in Southern California, during his racing SCOTT MARTINEZ SCOTT MARTINEZ career, winning or placing in 16 of those, with earnings of $111,854. He was a three-time stakes winner, with his biggest win coming in the PCQHRA Breeders Derby (G2). Owned by a syndicate and standing at Burns Ranch at Menifee, California, Stel Corona has from seven crops sired the earners of more than $7.4 million, with his biggest runner to date being champion and sire Foose ($1,616,938). Quirky s dam is the 2007 mare Dont Pass Bar. Bred by Dr. Steve Burns and purchased by Dr. Allred in 2008, she is a lightly raced winner on the track, with all her starts at Los Alamitos. Quirky is her first foal. She has a yearling full sister to Quirky named A Bit Quirky. Dont Pass Bar is by A Regal Choice and out of the Chicks Beduino mare Ynot Bar. Ynot Bar made only seven starts in her career, and all of them at Los Al, but earned $136,480. Her biggest performance came in the 2005 Governor s Cup Futurity (RG1), when Finding Nemo nosed her out at the wire. She still outran the likes of Volcom and Wave Carver. She also was a finalist in the Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) in her final career start. Ynot Bar has produced 12 foals, six of which are winners. Among them are Grade 1 winner Ynot Walk (by Walk Thru Fire, $159,890). Ynot Bar is out of the Utahbred mare Fames Easy. A top producer, Fames Easy has 13 winners from 17 starters. Her biggest is the Sum Fun To Bet mare Miss Kittys Bar Bet, who was foaled in 2005 and placed in the Grade 1 Kindergarten and Ed Burke futurities, as well as the 2009 edition of the Charger Bar Handicap (G1). She earned $264,188 and went on to produce Restricted Grade 2-placed runner No Arizona (by Foose, $66,610) and Restricted Grade 2 finalist Miss Mindys Bar Bet (by A Regal Choice, $24,365). Fames Easy is also the dam of Grade 1-placed runners Dont Dink With Me (by Chicks Beduino, $164,153), Doreme Fasolasi Win (by Apollo (TB), $102,805) and Takeela Sunrise (by Bono Jazz, $44,360), Superior Race Horse Ambush Alley (by Snowbound (TB), $144,686) and stakes-placed runner Easyist (by Separatist, $43,651). Her dam was the Easy Jet mare Mighty Easy Pass, who won the 1989 Denim N Diamonds Futurity (G1) and earned $278,825 in her career. Quirky may train up to the Champion of Champions, or may look for a prep race in the interim. Carlos Huerta celebrates his Grade 1 victory. Trainer James Glenn Jr. and owner/ breeder Dr. Ed Allred celebrate in the winner s circle. Andrea Caudill is editor of the Q-Racing Journal. To comment, write to acaudill@aqha.org. 36 Watch the Refrigerator Handicap! Effortless FRIDGE Zoomin Effortlessly goes from a $10k claimer to a Grade 1 winner in the Refrigerator. DUSTIN ORONA PHOTOGRAPHY By Andrea Caudill Zoomin Effortlessly has the Refrigerator Handicap on lockdown as he cruises home in the final strides.

37 The happy connections celebrate Zoomin Effortlessly s first Grade 1 victory. THE APTLY-NAMED ZOOMIN EFFORTLESSLY CRUISED HOME IN THE $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) on October 3 at Lone Star Park, defeating a field that included top aged horse Dashin Brown Streak by a half length. It is the first Grade 1 win for the horse who was a $10,000 claim last year and was acquired in January by Telesforo Perrett and now is displaying championship possibilities very similar to last year s world champion, JRC Callas First. Zoomin Effortlessly did not make a big impression in his freshman and sophomore years, but showed steady improvement last year he won or placed in five of six starts while steadily climbing to the $10,000 claiming level. Last fall at Lone Star, the gelding was claimed from Pamela Stone. He closed last year as the AQHA Hi-Point Texas Claimer. This year, Zoomin Effortlessly has won six of eight starts, including four stakes, and set a 400-yard track record at Retama Park. In June, Zoomin Effortlessly took the TQHA Sires Cup Stakes (R), followed with the TQHA Classic Stakes (RG3) in July and Live Oak Handicap (R) in August before conquering the Refrigerator Handicap (G1). He has career earnings of $123,401, with 82 percent of that earned this year. In the Refrigerator, he was saddled by Edelmiro Carrizales, who gave a leg up to his brother Santos Carrizales. Santos and Zoomin Effortlessly loaded into Post 1, held their speed and moved clear in the 440-yard race. They finished a half-length the best in :21.312, to earn a first-place check of $42,750. Favorite Dashin Brown Streak, who was making his first start since May, lacked kick and finished sixth. Moonin The Eagle was second, followed by Mr Jo Eagle, Jody Pops Zoomer, Charvet, Dashin Brown Streak, Rockin Disco, Sleepers Best Corona and Jessies First Down. Zoomin Effortlessly was bred in Texas by Tommy R. Charbula of Edna, Texas, and is by Zoomin For Bux and out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Royal Quick Affair. Zoomin For Bux is an 11-year-old son of Shazoom who comes from the breeding program of 20-year breeder Sue Hunt of Elmendorf, Texas. A precocious youngster, Zoomin For Bux won the Retama Park Futurity (G1), placed in four additional graded stakes and earned $259,739. Zoomin For Bux is out of Hunt s homebred Oh No Its Uh Oh, a daughter of top Texas sire Jody O Toole. Owned by Jose Garza and Mario Vazquez and standing at Tate Farms in Ville Platte, Louisiana, Zoomin For Bux has sired 62 winners from 135 starters, with solid average earnings per starter of $15,770. Among his runners are Refrigerator contestant Jody Pops Zoomer, as well as Canadian champion Zoomin After Six. Zoomin Effortlessly s dam is the 10-year-old mare Royal Quick Affair, who was bred by a partnership of Connie Nobles and Burnett Ranches LLC. The mare had only a brief racing career, and this is her first foal. Her second foal is a 2-year-old Captain Courage filly named Corona Quick Chick. Royal Quick Affair, though, comes from one of the deepest mare-line wells. Her dam is the Special Effort mare Effortless Love, making her a half-sister to stakes winner Mr Effortless Reign ($20,118), as well as stakes-placed runners Chocolate Cartel ($57,585) and Coup De Love ($8,464). Their dam, Old Love Of Mine, was a multiple Grade 1 finalist. Runners emerging from this immediate family tree include All American Futurity (G1) winner Streakin Flyer ($1,141,128), Grade 1-placed Love My Corona ($129,379) and Chicks Are Streakin ($196,514), and Canadian champions Its All About Speed ($175,724) and Mezoomn ($83,837). Going back another generation brings us to family members Callmemyoh ($179,479), Call Me Together ($92,577), Haystretcher ($203,052), Calling For Cash ($95,716), Oh My Dash ($65,157), Red White And Gol ($96,009), and runner and sire Oh My Gee Whiz (who is also the dam s sire of champion distance horse Snowbound Superstar, among others). 40 Watch the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship! Invitational MOON CHAMPION MOONIST IS WELL ON HIS WAY THROUGH ANOTHER potentially championship-earning year, as on October 17 he won the $125,000 Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship (G1) to notch his second Grade 1 of the year. The 4-year-old gelding races for Ron Hartley, and in the Invitational, he broke cleanly under Cesar DeAlba and strode smoothly to a half-length victory over a game Far Niente, who earlier this year won the Vessels Maturity (G1). Moonist covered the 440 yards in : and earned $62,500, which pushes his lifetime record to 20 wins in 29 starts and earnings of $706,194. Far Niente was honest in second, with Separate Interest hot on his heels in third. All American Gold Cup (G1) winner Rock You was fourth, followed by French Fury, Well And Good, Remarkableeyesapower, Fiery Kimbo, Joe Legacy and All Out Arrogant. Moonist was saddled by John Cooper, who has guided the horse s notable career from the start. Moonist is one of only nine Quarter Horses with 11 or more stakes wins at Los Alamitos. Remarkably, of those, three were trained by Cooper, including distance champion Sign Of Lanty (16 stakes) and Champion Chingaderos (11 stakes). She is also the dam of stakes winners Moonin The Eagle ($214,553), Jess My Moon ($78,150) and Stray Cat ($58,638). Your First Moon s dam, Moon Arisen, was herself a Grade 1 finalist in her 11-race career. In addition to Your First Moon, she produced Grade 1-placed runner Sunset Dash (by First Down Dash, $250,795), Grade 1 winner Not A Full Moon (by First Down Dash, $271,962) and Moonlight Corona (by Corona Cartel, $61,642), dam of track record setter Stroller ($40,212). The mare line traces directly back to Vessels Stallion Farms foundation mares, including Moonist s fourth dam, the great American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Ought To Go, her dam Do Good Bam, and her second dam Do Good, who is also a member of the Hall of Fame. Moonist is being pointed at the December 12 Champion of Champions (G1). Andrea Caudill is editor of the Q-Racing Journal. To comment, write to acaudill@aqha.org. 40 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

52 Granada REBOOT Granada Farms rebrands under new owners. By Richard Chamberlain FAITH, GUTS AND OPTImism. Any successful rancher, every dedicated horseman and all good cowboys share those three essential traits. Case in point: Texas, where farms and ranches are gripped by drought, ranchers are caught between higher prices for feed and declining prices for livestock, the horse business is hurting and horse racing is in crisis. So what s a rancher/horseman/cowboy to do? If you re in Texas, you pick up another ranch. In Texas. Cattle is what has paid the bills for me all these years, said Pete Scarmardo, 63, who with AQHA Past President Johnny Trotter bought Granada Farms early this year. With Johnny and me both in the horse business, too, it just kinda worked out for us. Trotter concurs. Long established as one of the leading stallion farms in the industry, Granada Farms stands Azoom, Bodacious Dash, Dealagame, Down N Dash, Epic Leader, Jess Zoomin, Memory Keeper, Red Oak Special, Tempting Dash and View Me Flying, and has frozen semen available from Hiclass La Jolla, Streakin La Jolla and Streakin Sixes. First and foremost, Granada is a complement to what we ve been doing for a long time, said Trotter, a cattle rancher who runs far-flung ranching operations from the office at Bar-G Feedyard near his home in Hereford, Texas. The land that Granada Farms is on complements what we re RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN Jimmy Eller has spent 33 years at Granada Farms, where he looks forward to the new era. already doing: It s another place to run cattle. The horse deal is another business in itself, but it s also a way to complement our own horse business. Pete and I are both in the horse business so we re always going to have a lot of horses. It s also a way to work with Jimmy Eller, and benefit all three of us. Jimmy Eller is the general manager at Granada Farms, which he founded in 1984 in cooperation with his father, Jim, as a division of what then was Granada Corp., which included Granada Land & Cattle Co. Now 58, Eller has overseen the careers of such leading racing sires as Ronas Ryon, Runaway Winner, Streakin La Jolla and Windy Ryon, and cutting horses sires such as Doc s Oak. A full-service facility that breeds and boards mares, Granada foals out some 150 mares annually and also sale-preps 200 or more yearlings a year, with graduates such as champions Double Down Special and Joanna Kate going through the program and Blues Girl Too not only getting her start there but also returning after earning $2,032,328 and bringing back the 2007 world title. What we try to do is to provide just about any type of service that somebody might want, from the management of stallions to foaling mares, keeping some year-round boarders, raising the babies, weaning, halter-breaking and all that kind of stuff, 52 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

53 Eller said. We used to have tons of recip mares, but we found it much more cost efficient to flush the embryos here and then to fly them to one of the stations that the mare owner would prefer. Most of our embryos go to Royal Vista Southwest. We do quite a bit of sales preparation here and take the yearlings and horses to the major sales in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. We don t go to California or Louisiana, but we occasionally fit horses to send out there. And we do some minor surgery here our vet, Dr. Mark Nevill, performs those. We re fortunate, too, that we re in such close proximity to Dr. Cliff Honnas and his people at the Texas Equine Hospital in Bryan, who do most of the major surgeries there. The breeding farm at Wheelock, Texas, opens the gate to 340 acres off the OSR. The state highway that the early Tejanos knew as the Old San Antonio Road, the OSR was a section of the El Camino Real ( the King s Highway ) blazed by 17thcentury Spanish settlers between what now is Mexico City through San Antonio to Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, Louisiana. The present Granada Farms is a couple miles west of the El Camino Ranch, which began as a venture of the Granada Land & Cattle Co. and now is where Trotter and Scarmardo run stocker steers and heifers. Granada s right down the road from us, Scarmardo said. Johnny and I already owned two other ranches right around Granada, and we d been trying to add to our land ownings out there, if we could find something close. Well, one time when we were going by on our way to the El Camino, Johnny said, You know, we oughta buy that place. So I stopped in there one day, and Jimmy said that the Nunnallys (Robert and Karen, of Georgia) wanted to sell it. They priced it, we thought it was OK, we made a deal and went ahead and bought it. Counting Opinions, Opinions Count DRIVING HIS FORD F-250 AROUND GRANADA FARMS, ELLER STOPS by the barns to check on the stallions, each of which has his own turn-out paddock ( Our whole operation pretty much revolves around them ), and takes extra time to call upon mares such as Blues Girl Too ( my own special project, he noted), relaxing in her own pen. Satisfied with the horses, Eller then turns his attention to the crews putting up new barns and other buildings, and replacing old worn-out fences with new wood and PVC. RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN Jamie Boiles: Treating all the sick horses, seeing them get better, seeing them be able to go and run, working with the stallions and mares, raising the babies and watching them grow all of that is just awesome. Eller smiled with anticipatory satisfaction. What I d like to see happen is happening, he said. We have the capital now to be able to do some things that need doing, some construction projects that we ve always wanted to do. We re working on everything, trying to fix up this place and make it nicer. A former president of the Texas Quarter Horse Association and an AQHA director and member of the stud book and registration committee, Eller exercises a cautionary note. Anybody that runs a horse farm knows that you have to be careful about watching your nickels, because it is a very seasonal business, he said. Most of your income comes the first half of the year. I don t know that we would necessarily want to get bigger, because we ve always placed a lot of importance on quality of services and we always strive to get better. I think we re going to be able to do that. We ve got some really good people in place now to help us get there. During the breeding season, Granada typically has a couple dozen ranch hands, counting all the staff, breeding people and farm workers. They have something to say about Granada Farms. Consider Miranda Leffler, who grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and spent seven summers in high school and college wrangling horses and leading trail rides on a dude ranch in Colorado, where she earned a degree in equine science with a minor in business at Colorado State University. Leffler has been at Pete Scarmardo gets a lot of windshield time overseeing his ranches and related businesses in production agriculture. 54 Jimmy Eller, Pete Scarmardo and Miranda Leffler welcome Bodacious Dash to his first season at stud. RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN Miranda Leffler returns Dealagame from his paddock back to the barn. Granada for the past year and a half, where she is stallion manager and oversees sales prep in the Central Texas heat. Yeah, it s a lot different from Colorado, she acknowledged. But it s really a lot of fun handling the quality studs we ve got here. It s been kind of a difference experience for me. After college, I worked for four years at the Four Sixes before I came here, so I was around breeding stallions, but I never really got to do much with them. It s been cool to really learn their personalities, see how they change throughout the year, how they get along. Breeding manager Claudia Talbot has a degree in animal science from nearby Texas A&M University. She too enjoys the work despite the long hours. It s fulfilling and it s an inspirational job, Talbot said. You know that you re helping and that you re making a difference. Personally, it s the happiest I could ever be. I sure wouldn t be happy working in an office. The long hours get tedious, but it s worth it in the end. You ve got those long nights breeding mares, but seeing the foals born the next year makes it all worthwhile. And the people: Dealing with the public is one of those things that you learn how to do. You have clients that are your favorites, that understand the business, and then also you have the ones that maybe don t have a clue, but you get to educate them, too. It s really helpful for the clients that don t have the background that we have, that we can help educate them and help them make the best decisions for their horse. And Jamie Boiles, the Granada vet tech who also is a Texas Aggie animal science graduate: I grew up around horses, ever since I was 8 years old, so they ve always been in my life, and as a career it s very rewarding and fulfilling. I cannot do an office job had one, lasted six months and I was ready to go crazy. I like being outside and I love the babies. Treating all the sick horses, seeing them get better, seeing them be able to go and run, working with the stallions and mares, raising the babies and watching them grow all of that is just awesome. Boiles paused, nodded and smiled. These horses are very different from what I grew up with, doing 4-H and pleasure and all that, so I was used to going slow and being around really calm, quiet horses, she said with a laugh. So being around a different type of horse has taken a little bit of getting used to. But it s very exciting to be around them, and I know how very lucky and very glad I am to work with them, and to be around very good horse people. Good horse people. That brings us back to where we began, with successful ranchers, dedicated horsemen and good cowboys fighting a headwind while trying to make a go of things. To be involved with Pete and Johnny, two leaders in the industry, is a real honor to me, Eller said. The other side of that story is that Johnny and I are really glad that we ve got Jimmy here, because he s so well respected and knows so much about the industry, Scarmardo offered. We know we can rest assured that he s taking care of things. We don t have to be here every day, taking care of every detail. The horses and the business are in good hands. And finally, Trotter: You can already see the changes we ve made at Granada. It s going to be just like anything else Pete and I have anything to do with: It s going to be a premier facility or we re not going to have anything to do with it. With Bodacious Dash and Tempting Dash, and the other studs that were already there, it not only has been a premier facility but it s going to be even more of a premier place to breed and raise horses. It s going to be a first-rank stud farm, not only with the studs and ownership, but also the management. Jimmy Eller well, nuff said about him. He s kinda like Pete and I are in the cattle business: Jimmy doesn t have to prove anything to anybody, he s already done that a long time ago. I cannot say enough about either Pete or Jimmy. But here s what I will say: Granada Farms is going to be different and better than it has ever been before. Dang right. Faith, guts and optimism. That s what it takes. 55 FOR PETE S SAKE Pete and Jo Scarmardo have lived since 1978 on their 115-acre home ranch between Caldwell and Bryan, Texas. It s the headquarters for a production agriculture operation spanning ranches in Burleson, Brazos, Robertson and Milam counties, a constantly busy place with trucks coming and going from the gathering pens and processing chutes they use as cattle brokers who buy, trade and ship cattle across Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. The home place is where they keep some of their horses, including mares, babies, yearlings and Jo s barrel horses. It s also where Pete and Jo raised their three boys: Scott, 37, who with wife Stacey has son Cade, 11, and daughter Carlie, 9; Craig, 35, who with Ashley has son Pete Gabriel, 3, and daughter Giuliana, 1; and Ty, 28, whose wife, Haven, will graduate in December with a degree in elementary education from Sam Houston State University. The sons oversee some of the family businesses. Craig is the head cattle broker; Scott runs Brazos Valley Livestock, the livestock auction in nearby Bryan; and Ty manages the Lone Star Grain Co., which merchandises corn, wheat, soybeans and milo. I m really fortunate that all three of my sons work with us, Pete said. They ve all got different responsibilities in different parts of the business. (laughs) They don t have to answer to one another every day, but they re all part of our businesses. They take a lot of the load off me. I m very fortunate that we ve got enough going on that they all can work with us and make a living doing it. Pete and Jo kept the boys mounted when they were growing up. They started with speed events at horse shows before moving into calf roping, team roping and steer wrestling. When our kids were rodeoing, I had a good friend, (champion trainer) Jack Dube, whose two daughters were rodeoing, Pete said. Jack was always telling me that I needed to get a couple running horses. So I fiddled around, bought some cheap horses and Jack ran them for me. Then when my kids quit rodeoing, I got more involved in it. That led to modest success in graded stakes: Dealagame won the 2009 Louisiana QHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) at Fair Grounds; Raising Kain scored in the 2013 John Deere Juvenile Challenge (G2) at Los Alamitos; A Lil Tres Seis took the 2008 Ford East Juvenile Challenge (G3) at Delta Downs; and This Is A Deal, his homebred gelding by Dealagame, finished second in this year s Sam Houston Futurity (G2) and at press time had qualified for the November 14 Texas Class Futurity (G1). Those are the biggest horses and biggest races I ve won, he said. I ve had some horses that came close to some things, but just not quite the real big-time horses in Quarter Horse racing, a head makes a lot of difference. Pete laughed. Johnny Trotter and I have partnered on horses, but right now we don t have any horses together. Johnny has his deal up there in the Panhandle and I ve got mine down here in Central Texas. He fools with a lot of really nice-bred horses, I just kind of race a few little cheap ones by myself. He ll keep doing it. I ve been blessed to have a good family and good friends, and to be able to make a living in the cattle and horse industry, doing what I enjoy doing, he said. It s been a real blessing. I feel like I m very fortunate to do that, and I thank God every day for it. The horse business is a tough business, Pete continued. You ve got to enjoy it to be in it, anyway. So your ultimate goal is to always breed the best horses you can and for them to be successful, whether it s a racehorse or performance horse or whatever it is. One of the things that I have learned through the years is to appreciate a good horse, whether it s a racehorse or a barrel horse or a roping horse or a good ranch horse whatever it is, you appreciate their ability and what they do. Yeah, it s always more fun to be up at the top, with any kind of horse or in anything else you do. But all you can ask of any horse is just that he does the best he can, and if he doesn t have the ability to do more, you can t expect more out of him. Amen. There s one more thing, too. After a tough day, I d rather walk outside, look at a good horse and talk to it than I would to have to go sit on a couch somewhere to talk to a therapist. 62 Historical racing hits and misses in Texas. By Richard Chamberlain IT WAS AN EARTHQUAKE, WITH AFTERSHOCKS THAT AREN T over yet. We re talking about historical racing (also known as instant racing), an electronic gaming system that allows players to bet on replays of horse races that have already been run. When historical racing came to Texas, shock hit the fan. State estimates are that the Texas horse industry contributes $5.5 billion to the Texas economy industry and creates 36,000 jobs. Nonetheless, what well could be the best racing industry on Planet Earth is hobbled by factors outside the borders of the Lone Star State. As everyone in horse racing knows, Texas is surrounded by gaming, lots of it and in pretty much all forms. Forget Vegas and all the other cliches. In just the neighboring states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico, there are more than 40 casinos, including at more than half a dozen racetracks. Texans stream into those out-of-state casinos, leave their money and return to a home where declining purses and opportunities are forcing horsemen to take their horses elsewhere (e.g., back to many of those same out-of-state tracks with purses supplemented by gaming). On September 25, the Friday morning prior to the opening of the second day of the Heritage Place Yearling Sale, a group of horsemen gathered at the Heritage sale ring to review and discuss the latest racing debacle in Texas. They were talking about historical racing. With the full 62 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL

That was the first shockwave, outraging some state legislators who consider historical racing an illegal expansion of gaming. The Texas Racing Commission is funded entirely through fees and assessments on the racing industry itself, but state law requires that the commission collect those fees and turn them over to the state, which then reallocates the money back to the commission. During the last session of the Texas legislature, which adjourned June 1, Sen. Jane Nelson of Flower Mound declared that the State of Texas would not fund the Texas Racing Commission unless the commission repealed historical racing rules. This was no off-the-wall threat: A Republican representing District 12, which includes portions of Denton and Tarrant counties, Nelson is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and is a member of the Texas Legislative Budget Board. Some Background PLAY BEGINS IN HISTORICAL RACING WHEN A PLAYER DEPOSITS a wager in a historical racing terminal (HRT) and a race is randomly selected from a video library of more than 60,000 previous races. Identifying information such as the location of the track, date of the race and names of the horses and jockeys is not shown, though charts display limited handicapping information such as the jockeys and trainers winning percentages. Many HRTs also have features that allow the machine to automatically make the selections for the player, and, yes, some have spinning wheels and flashing lights that make them look like slot machines. The HRT then shows a video replay of the race, either the entire race or just the stretch run. For bettors, payouts are based on pari-mutuel principles, with wagers divvied up into betting pools for different winning possibilities (win, place or show, exactas, etc.). For tracks and horsemen, handle and purses have risen everywhere historical racing has been introduced. Everywhere, too, controversy has erupted. Introduced in January 2000 as Instant Racing at Oaklawn Park (whose general manager developed it in partnership with Amtote), the game was an instant success in Arkansas, where the state legislature paved the way the previous year by removing the requirement that simulcast races be shown live. But historical racing has had an up-and-down trajectory in legal territory everywhere else. Oregon followed Arkansas in April 2003, when the Oregon Racing Commission granted approval for historical racing at that state s tracks, though after various challenges and an adverse ruling by the state attorney general, it was not until 2013 that the state enacted a law definitively legalizing it. When the Wyoming Pari-Mutuel Commission approved historical racing machines 2003, their legality was Q-RACING JOURNAL NOVEMBER

64 called into question by that state s attorney general and the machines were removed in 2005 following a court ruling. The Wyoming Supreme Court ruled them illegal in 2006 (calling them a slot machine that attempts to mimic traditional pari-mutuel wagering ), only to have them re-legalized in 2013 by the state legislature. This fall, they stopped use of the machines to once again examine the issue. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in 2010 modified its definition of pari-mutuel wagering to allow historical racing, at the same time asking a court whether the change was legal. The court approved the changes and antigambling activists appealed the decision, which led to a Kentucky Supreme Court ruling in February 2014 that the commission has the authority to allow the game. The high court further ruled that historical racing was legal parimutuel wagering in theory while also sending the case back to the county court to determine whether particular machines and game types are legal under Kentucky law. Kentucky Downs installed HRTs in September 2011 and Ellis Park followed suit a year later, and by May 2015 more than $1 billion had been handled on historical racing. Keeneland and The Red Mile opened their jointly owned historical racing parlor September 17 of this year. The Idaho Legislature legalized historical racing in The machines were installed at Les Bois Park in Boise and Idaho Downs in Idaho Falls, both of which soon raised purses and expanded days. However, when the machines were put in a sports bar across the street from a casino operated by the Coeur d Alene Tribe in Idaho Falls, legislators scurried for cover by repealing the 2013 law with more than two-thirds majorities in both houses of the legislature. On April 3, Idaho Gov. Butch Otter vetoed the bill and on April 6 the Senate failed to override the veto by a vote of 19-16, though the Idaho Supreme Court then ruled that the governor did not veto the bill within the five days required by Idaho law. About 250 of the machines were installed in the three locations across Idaho. Those include 200 at Les Bois Park in the Boise suburb of Garden City. Treasure Valley Racing, which operates live, simulcast and historical racing at Les Bois, spent more than $4 million on HRTs and upgrades to the Turf Club at Les Bois, which has told employees and horsemen that the ban would force closure of the track. Treasure Valley Racing is obviously extremely disappointed in the court s ruling, Treasure Valley Racing President John Sheldon said in a statement. It comes on the heels of a 32-day live race schedule at Les Bois Park that would not have occurred without the infusion that historical horse racing brings to this industry. A season that disbursed nearly $2 million in purses to horsemen, employed 280 Idahoans and contributed $2.67 million in taxes We are currently reviewing all of our options and assessing the significant impact that complying with the court s order will have on the immediate and long-term future of Les Bois Park. message has to be about hard-working Texans who are overlooked by a legislature that at this point really doesn t care. We are put in a bad spot by these legislators who are trying to bring all sorts of different industries into Texas but are not trying to protect one of the oldest with the strongest heritage. Let s change our message to save Texas horses or save our Texas heritage, something that people outside our industry can relate to. Werstler stressed that horsemen need to spread the word right now. Two years ago, the Texas Racing Commission asked its legal counsel to give his opinion as to whether the commission had the legal authority to propose and adopt rules for historical racing. Attorneys for Lone Star Park and Sam Houston Race Park also voiced their opinions, and all agreed that TRC did have the legal authority to adopt rules for HRTs. Rep. Matt Krause of Arlington filed a suit against the commission, which was thrown out of court, but the Kickapoo Tribe, which operates a casino at Eagle Pass, and the Texas Bingo Association then filed suit. In November 2014, a Texas district judge ruled that historical wagering was illegal because it did not have approval of the state legislature. Texas horsemen also lost their appeal, which was held in the same court. The Texas legislature meets every two years. In the 2015 session, the House passed a budget including funding for the state racing commission while the Senate budget passed without TRC funding. A conference committee then passed HB-1, the final budget with TRC funding. However, Sen. Nelson managed to insert a rider that required the commission Racing creates tens of thousands of jobs, and the breeding industry is a major part of that. State of the Lone Star SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE TEXAS? Let s face it: Nobody not directly affected by the racing industry cares about saving Texas racing, said Rob Werstler, the director of racing for the Texas Quarter Horse Association. What s our message? Why do we need saving? Well, it s because the LBB won t fund the Texas Racing Commission. Hold on: You expect Joe Public to understand that? Our 64 N OVEMBER 2015 Q-RACING JOURNAL ANDREA CAUDILL

65 COADY PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREA CAUDILL to request $1.5 million for the appropriation period ($750,000 apiece for both years) from the Legislative Budget Board. The Texas Racing Commission then proposed to repeal historical racing rules at its August meeting. With the entire racing industry urging it to uphold the rules, the commission voted not to repeal. That left TRC with no funds to continue operating after August 31, which would force all live and simulcast racing to cease in Texas. Racing shut down September 1 for 24 hours. Hundreds of letters and s, and a social media effort, persuaded the lieutenant governor to allow the Texas Racing Commission to use other funds to continue operating, Werstler said. We have been told that the lieutenant governor did not expect the TRC to vote not to repeal HRT rules and he also did not think the horse industry would put pressure on the Legislative Budget Board the way we did. The LBB passed a short-term measure that funds TRC through the American Quarter Horse meet at Lone Star Park. One of the members of the Legislative Budget Board is Speaker of the House Joe Straus (R-San Antonio), who recused himself from LBB discussions and voting because his family owns Retama Park. Speaker Straus has done a great job working with members of both parties, Werstler said. The Tea Party does not like him and wants to replace him. Now the lieutenant governor is pressuring Gov. (Greg) Abbott to replace three commissioners whose terms are up, with people who will vote to repeal HRM rules. The governor is not taking the bait, so far. The pressure, especially from the Tea Party wing in a state as conservative as Texas, can be overwhelming. During the 2013 legislative session, Sen. John Corona, a tenured Republican senator from Dallas, came with a wideranging gambling bill that would have allowed casinos at racetracks and would have put as I recall three more in large cities in Texas, Werstler said. He held a hearing, and said the way casinos are situated around Texas looks like ticks on a dog. Corona showed a video of Thackerville, Oklahoma, and there was nothing around there except the WinStar Casino. He said this is the home to the largest casino in the The Texas Classic races offer some of the richest purses in the country for American Quarter Horses. world, sitting right on the Texas border. Sen. Corona went on to state, Look, Texas is losing millions of dollars in tax revenue from Texans going over and playing in our surrounding states. So the Tea Party came after him and he lost re-election. That s the reality of politics. Like it or not, politics is the game horsemen have to play. TQHA has raised funds for a public relations firm to get the horsemens message in front of the public. Texas A&M is doing an economic impact study, which is incredibly important to us at this point, Werstler said. What horsemen and people in the industry need to do right now is contact the LBB to keep pressure on the lieutenant governor and the LBB right now. We have to do everything in our power to make sure the Texas Racing Commission gets funded. Now let s say we do that, and the Commission gets funded which I fully expect them to do. The money was appropriated and passed by the entire legislature. But what happens when the commission does get funded? We re back to Square 1, basically. We re an industry dying on the vine, and we re getting no help from the legislature. We have been told by legislators to bring them a bill that isn t an expansion of gambling but will still help horse racing. So far, that hasn t worked. But attacking those legislators isn t going to work either. If we re going to get anything passed, we are going to have to work with them. That starts with horsemen communicating the people holding the reins of power. Contact your legislators, Werstler urged Texas horsemen at the Heritage Place meeting. Write, call or your state representative, your state senator, members of the Legislative Budget Board and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to express your concern over the future funding of the Texas Racing Commission. Be polite that s how Texans do business. In a respectful way, ask for their support in fully funding the commission. As South Dakota horseman Tom Maher added at the meeting, It s time for Texas horsemen to either stand up or give up. Many of American Quarter Horse racing s top horses were bred, raised and/or raced in Texas. Richard Chamberlain is a special contributor to the Q-Racing Journal. 71 Political Debut made her first appearance in a stakes winner s circle in the Adequan Will Rogers Derby Challenge. Bos Arrival is by the Six Fortunes stallion Mr Bo Jackson, and out of the Easy Saint mare Scheduled Arrival. A race winner, she contested the 2000 New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3). This is her first stakes winner. Distaff SUDDEN SEPARATION HAS DONE WELL FOR HERSELF IN 2015, AS on September 12 she added her fourth stakes win to the resume with a stylish victory in the $32,580 Merial Prairie Meadows Distaff Challenge. Bred and owned by Duane Murphy of Aurora, Missouri, the mare is one of 24 starters Murphy has bred in his own name over 20 cumulative years of breeding. He also raced her dam, Okie Dokey Annie, as well as breeding the likes of stakes-placed runners Iris Dashing Royal ($43,704), Stylish Sydney ($18,668) and Handsome Jansen ($29,928). Sudden Separation was trained by Larry Sharp, who also saddled her to win the Golden Driller Stakes, Rocky Heinzing Stakes and Keokuk Stakes (G3) already this summer. In the Distaff, she was in the lead mid-stretch of the 400- yard race and dug in gamely to win by a length in : Send Me This Wagon was second, followed by Kuhl Wave, Kateillac, Xoom, Madresita, Captivating Cara, Sooner Country Babe and Dashing Lili. She has now won six of 13 career starts and earned $81,047. Sudden Separation is by champion Inseparable, a Grade 1 winner and earner of $672,756. Murphy acquired Okie Dokey Annie as a yearling from breeder Barley & Sharp Farm of Asbury, Missouri. The Missouri-bred is a daughter of Okie Dokey Dale out of the Easily Smashed mare Annie Montana. Larry and Pat Sharp and John and Barbara Barley s partnership has bred a mere 24 starters, but those runners have averaged just under $30,000 per horse, including Grade 1-placed Strong Hope ($209,395). Larry Sharp trained Okie Dokey Annie, too, as she made 23 career starts, and won or placed in 10 of them with earnings of $94,773. She won the 2006 Kansas Futurity (G2) and 2007 Central Distaff Challenge and set a 350-yard track record in the 2008 Dog Iron Dash Stakes. Retired to the broodmare pasture, she has produced three winners from three starters. Sudden Separation is her first stakes winner, but she is also the dam of Remington allowance winner Custom Paint ($39,273). The Barley and Sharp family s involvement with the dam line goes much farther, though. Okie Dokey Annie s dam is Annie Montana, a daughter of Easily Smashed bred by Larry Sharp, and also the dam of stakes-placed runner Painted Annie (by PYC Paint Your Wagon, $30,752). Annie Montana COADY PHOTOGRAPHY Agustin Silva guided Bos Big Shamoon to a narrow victory in the John Deere Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge. is out of the Pat Sharp/Barbara Barley-bred mare Sharley Fast Feather, a winning Merganser daughter whose foals shared a fun theme they all carried geographical names, from Annie Montana to Dinah Carolina to Chickasha O K.
