1 PONY CLUB AUSTRALIA PCA News Lesson Plan Competition Winners Congratulations to the following winners of the 2018 Lesson Plan Competition. The entries were judged by the National Coaching Committee. First Mark Stevens from Withcott PC, Queensland was the winner for his detailed and comprehensive show jump lesson covering all the criteria Second Anne Skewes from Arcadia PCA, NSW wrote a great Quiz Third Sally Davis from South Midlands PC, WA was awarded for The Amazing Race The winning entries are now on the PCA website. PCA Board Changes The AGM of PCA was held in Canberra at the end of May and Mark Bradley and Marylou Hodges were elected to the board. Mark has a background in finance, insurance and corporate governance, is a club committee member and Pony Club parent in NSW. Marylou is a member of Holbrook Pony Club, NSW, a PCA coach and coach assessor and currently works as an equine specialist with Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. You can read about Mark, Marylou and the other board members on the PCA website here. PCA is proud to have such a high quality, independent, skills-based board volunteering their time to Pony Club. The terms of Judy Pitt and Carol Paterson have ended. PCA recognises Judy and Carol s service to the organisation. Judy, from Tasmania, made a significant contribution to Pony Club over 16 years as a state delegate and then PCA board member. Carol Paterson was Chair of the PCA board for the last 4 years, after many years as a coach and reflects on her time in Pony Club in an article in this issue. 2 PONY CLUB AUSTRALIA AWARD WINNERS Isabella Forsyth, Queensland Best achievement by a rider 12 years and under, sponsored by HorseWyse Isabella loves Gumdale Pony Club and has brought several friends to the club. Isabella is always on hand as a rail steward and is very supportive of her peers. She has completed her D, D* and C certificates and had a successful year in showjumping with many wins at club, zone and state level. Isabella believes that a partnership with her horse is the best way to achieve her goals and spends all her time caring for her 3 horses and the other 14 at home. Anika Green, Queensland Best achievement by a rider years, sponsored by Horseland Anika has been a member of Greenbank Pony Club since Anika has completed all of her certificates up to B and competed in gymkhana, dressage and horse trials. When her beloved horse Aspire4Gold, that she had trained from a yearling, was forced to retire in 2017 with navicular disease, Anika pursued her instructor's certificate, First Aid and CPR training, Preliminary Dressage Judge certification and helped out club members by training their horses. Anika's resilience and dedication is an inspiration to others. Jarryd Stanley, Victoria Best achievement by a rider over 17 years, sponsored by Horseland Jarryd participates in Seville Pony Club rallies, competitions and events, Zone Competitions and Clinics, PCAV State and PCA National Events as a rider, volunteer, mentor, positive role model and instructor. At the 2017 PCA Nationals Jarryd was a leader of the Victorian team, member of the winning senior eventing team and second individually. Jarryd has a passion for cross country course design and has completed course building clinics at FEI level, designed and built the highly acclaimed course for Grade 5 to Championship Level at the Seville Pony Club Horse Trials at Wandin Park in With 2018 his final year as a rider, Jarryd is actively seeking ways to contribute to Pony Club at club, state and national level. Debbie Cook, South Australia Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Sports Marketing Australia Debbie is a driving force and President of Jupiter Creek Pony Club. Debbie contributes across the Southern Zone organising zone camps, training days and clinics, and as zone representative. Debbie steps into multiple roles at events be it canteen, secretary, stewarding, gear checking or protest committee. Her positivity about Pony Club is displayed in her determination, drive, innovation, leadership, respect, team work, selflessness and commitment. Tiffany Joosse, Victoria Coach of the Year, sponsored by Wini Equine Tiffany recognises the value of diverse disciplines and develops innovative rally plans, which include games and musical rides, jumping equitation, ride to time, all aspects of theory, certificate work, showing, practice competitions, rider body awareness and balance, as well as lessons in the three Olympic disciplines at Merricks Pony Club. Tiffany is the club certificate coordinator, runs the Zone C* clinics and assists at neighbouring Main Ridge, Mornington Peninsula and Hastings Pony Clubs. Club members recognise Tiffany's patience, empathy and generosity in sharing her time and expertise with riders, parents and colleagues. Flinders Island Pony Club, Tasmania Club of the Year, sponsored by Gow Gates Insurance Flinders Island PC serves a small population and despite is size and isolation it has increased its junior members by 400% in the past 2 years. It has concentrated on continuity of quality coaching and creating a supportive environment to retain and build membership. For the first time in many years the club will be presenting certificates to its members. It now brings in coaches from Tasmania, runs weekend camps for riders, has new competitions at the local show and funds a dressage judge to travel between Flinders Island and King Island where riders compete over two rounds for the "Island Cup". 3 PCA thanks retired Chair, Carol Paterson Carol Paterson retired as the Chair of Pony Club Australia at PCA s final board meeting of the 2017/2018 year. Pony Club Australia would like to acknowledge Carol s outstanding contribution to Pony Club arising from her lifetime of experience in all levels of Pony Club in so many different roles. Club level - riding member at Glen Innes Pony Club Only two years after Glen Innes Pony Club became a foundation member of Pony Club New South Wales in 1952, Carol joined as a riding member. Carol fondly remembers attending the first Glen Innes Pony Club Camp in 1955, riding the 10 miles to get there while wearing her cardboard helmet covered in velvet, which was standard safety gear at the time. The instructors were mostly former Light Horse members, dressed in baggy jodhpurs with long boots, who taught troop drill, flag and rider in action and jumping exercises with no reins or stirrups. Back then, riders over 17 were required to leave Pony Club and Carol left with many happy memories and good friends from her riding days at Pony Club. Pictured Camp Champions Glen Innes Pony Club 1957 Geoff Lynn, Phillip Kirkby, Carol Cameron (Paterson), Coral Copeman Club level instructor and parent at Warialda Pony Club and Texas Pony Club Carol married and moved west in 1965 where she enjoyed several years as an instructor with Warialda Pony Club. After another move to Queensland and the arrival of 4 children, Carol participated in the restarting of Texas Pony Club and took the newly available Queensland Instructors Certificate in With 4 children riding and competing in Pony Club, Carol said there was never a dull moment. Texas Pony Club is still going and Carol remains involved with Pony Clubs in Queensland. Carol achieved her PCA NCAS Level 1 qualification in 1995 and updated it in State Level Pony Club Queensland Carol began her involvement with PCAQ at the Zone level, representing the Zone at state management committee meetings, becoming the Zone Chief Instructor and the Regional Administrator. Following her appointment to the State Chief Instructors Panel in 1988, Carol became the Vice President of PCAQ from 1991 to 2008 and was the PCAQ Team Manager for PCAQ teams to the NSW Championships and the first PCA National Championships held in 1996 in Wagga Wagga NSW. Carol s commitment to Pony Club in Queensland saw her become the Queensland NCAS Director responsible for the roll out of the NCAS course in Queensland, while chairing the organisation of the PCAQ State Dressage, Combined Training and Horse Trials Championships in Warwick in 2004, followed by the National Championships in Toowoomba in

4 PCA thanks retired Chair, Carol Paterson National level - Pony Club Australia (formerly Australian Pony Club Council) Carol began her involvement with Pony Club at the national level by accepting a fill-in coaching delegate position to Australian Pony Club Council meetings in 2000 and she became the PCAQ delegate to the Coaching Committee of PCA from 2005 to Her experience as a Team Manager at State level was the perfect preparation for her role as Team Manager for the Australian team at the International Dressage Championships for Pony Club held in New Zealand in 2004, the Inter Pacific Exchange team to Hong Kong and China in 2010 (winners! pictured right) and to New Zealand in Carol represented Pony Club Australia at the Pony Club International Alliance meetings held in Lexington Kentucky USA and Toronto in Canada where the discussion revolved around making Pony Club a truly international organisation. Following on from the PCIA meetings, Pony Club Australia was invited to send a Quiz team to compete in USA which has led to more Pony Club exchanges with two teams invited to North America and a National Quiz Competition evolving. Carol was appointed as the PCAQ delegate to the Australia Pony Club Council in 2012 and was appointed deputy Chair for that year. The APCC was in the process of becoming an independent board at that time which was a period of great change in Pony Club undertaken with limited resources. A new entity with a new constitution and an independent board, now Pony Club Australia, was established in 2014, and steps were taken to create a national database and national insurance schemes. Carol became the Chair of Pony Club Australia in November 2014 following the death of the first Chair, Vicki Connelly. As Chair, Carol was instrumental in creating international exchange opportunities for Pony Clubbers in France, in China and in the new discipline of Tetrathlon. Carol says: as we continue to expand our national and international experiences, I can feel that a little of the board s efforts and influence have enabled many young people to expand their horizons and see how Pony Club has influenced their experiences and given them ambition to assist a new generation to achieve. Thank you, Carol Paterson, for your outstanding lifelong contribution as a volunteer to Pony Club at all levels and we are glad to know that your involvement with Pony Club will continue well into the future. 5 2018 National Coaching Conference The National Coaching Conference is held every two years and is on from 24th to 26th August 2018 at the Gold Coast, Queensland. Dr Andrew McLean and Dr Portland Jones will be joining a range of speakers and demonstrations for the weekend program. The Conference coordinator is Michael Carlson, PCA National Coaching Committee Chair, in conjunction with Pony Club Queensland and Southport Pony and Hack Club - Ned Twohill Equestrian Park. The venue is ideal for the event with facilities including an indoor arena, equestrian field, training rooms and cross country obstacles. PCA makes a significant allocation from its budget for the event and is keen to see a good representation from all states. The conference will be a look into the future of Pony Club. Please contact your state office to enquire about places at the event. International coaching opportunities in China There are now 27 riding centres in China affiliated with China Pony Club. The riders at these centres are taught the Pony Club Australia syllabus and coaches are accredited by Pony Club Australia. We have several vacancies for longer term coach placements in China, primarily instructing young riders for E and D level certificates. These coaches will have travel and accommodation expenses met, and receive a weekly stipend. Coaches available for 2 or 3 months, which will be spent at one location in China, are sought. Applicants should have PCANCAS Preliminary or Level 1 accreditation. Over the past 2 years, eight coaches have travelled to China on multiple occasions and reported that the experience was enjoyable and rewarding.
