CEO S UPDATE BY ALAN CLAYTON Let me first say how very pleased and enthusiastic I am to have been asked to lead GRV at a time of critical importance to the greyhound racing industry. I see entering this industry as an extremely complex yet very exciting opportunity and I look forward to meeting many of you along my journey. I come from a long background in public sector management spanning healthcare, welfare, justice, racing and gaming. I was Project Director for the Gambling Licence Review that culminated in the renewed agreement between Tabcorp and the Victorian Racing Industry. That agreement was a good one for greyhound racing and I am impressed with the commercial environment the greyhound racing industry is operating in. It will be my job to ensure this position is maintained and built upon for future industry participants. GRV is the regulator of the greyhound racing industry and it is our job to ensure the integrity of the sport and the welfare of the greyhounds we all look after whilst ensuring participants in the industry prosper and the sport grows. At this significant juncture in the history of greyhound racing it is important for all of us in the industry to address in a timely manner the concerns about the way in which the industry conducts itself emanating from the recent reviews into GRV and the industry. I anticipate significant effort will be applied to implementing the recommendations made about the industry and this will be a major focus of mine. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of my predecessor Adam Wallish. A focus on greyhound welfare, significant advances in prohibited substance testing, consistent annual profits and market share increases were hallmarks of his tenure. In addition we saw returns to you, the participants, grow by $13 million over that time. In his 3-year term Adam achieved much and the industry is extremely well prepared to deal with its current challenges as a result of his leadership. The FY15 financial results for the industry have been very pleasing. GRV performed strongly in FY15 with our profit estimated at $5.2 million. This performance was assisted by strong wagering growth that saw the Victorian joint venture wagering turnover on greyhound racing grow by 5.48%, resulting in our market share increasing from 20.13% to 20.32%. The strong financial result included a major increase in infrastructure expenditure of $9.9 million as well as a $2.0 million increase in integrity & welfare expenses. Our strong financial position also sets us up for FY16 to make further investments in welfare, integrity & infrastructure so that we continue to ensure the sustainability of our industry. There is a lot to look forward to in coming months. We will have the Traralgon Cup at the newly redeveloped Glenview Park. Feedback on the track and facilities has been extremely positive and I congratulate GRV and the Traralgon club on their dedication to presenting a world class greyhound racing venue in a very important region of Victoria. We also have Cups at Healesville and Geelong before we turn to Group 1 racing at The Meadows and Sandown over the Spring. There will be many weeks of great racing that culminates in the TAB Melbourne Cup in late November. The industry also cements our partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia this month. Building on the tremendous success of the Go The Pink Dog campaign of recent years, we will be donating $500 every time a greyhound wearing the blue #4 rug wins a race in Victoria in September as a part of our Go The Blue Dog campaign. Each of our clubs will also hold a Man Up event to raise more money and increase awareness of prostate cancer. I encourage all of you to get along to these events and bring your friends. This is an extremely relevant cause for our industry with more than 70% of participants being male and the average age being in the mid-50s. Prostate cancer claims the life of more than 3000 men each year and over 20,000 will be diagnosed in If you haven t already get yourself checked out. More community activity takes place with the 2015 Great Chase Community Days culminating in the final day at The Meadows on October 28. For more than a decade the industry has given community groups in the disability sector the chance to have a day out at the races and earn some much needed funds along the way. This is yet another initiative that we should all feel extremely proud to be a part of and one that continues to help the reputation of the industry. The cases against the remaining suspended persons from activities arising from the Tooradin Trial Track continue to be prosecuted and we will see this play out throughout the rest of this year. I echo the sentiment of previous management and the GRV Board in denouncing this activity and reiterating that there is no place in this sport for those that feel rules do not apply to them. I look forward to hearing from many of you and hope to get around to as many venues as I can in the short term to increase my understanding of the industry and the people that make it tick. If you wish to discuss anything with me I am able to be contacted via at aclayton@grv.org.au or you can call the GRV office on Alan Clayton Chief Executive Officer Greyhound Racing Victoria 3 The information in this update is correct as of Thursday 20 August For all the latest information please refer to the GRV website at

4 NEW FACES FLOCK TO NEW TRACK By Andrew Copley Plenty of stories emanated out of the muchanticipated reopening of the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club on August 15. Organisers made sure the first race on the new track was won by a local, with the Terri Morris-trained Jesaulenko winning easily to the delight of favourite backers and fans of the Carlton Football Club. In more good news for locals, Mick Fearnley, whose association with Traralgon greyhound racing dates back to the 1980s in a variety of roles including lure driver, bookmaker and currently as a committeeman, became the first person to train a double on the new track through the efforts of Kid Audacious and Harlon. There were plenty of highlights on the night, said Traralgon GRC President, Don Haley. We had about 250 people through the gates without doing any advertising at all, and we couldn t have held many more because a few areas are currently roped off with grass growing as so forth. Haley said that while there is a sense of pride among trainers in the Gippsland region about the revamped venue, there were a number of non-racing people at the track on Saturday. There were a lot of new faces, which was terrific, and it is only a matter of time before the big trainers from the Geelong region start heading here to race their dogs. No doubt they are waiting to see how the track pans out in the early meetings before they commit to coming here, but we expect to see them over the coming weeks with the Traralgon Cup coming up next month, he said. Fearnley s feat was later matched by Ken Height and Rodney Clark, with the latter enduring a seven hour round trip from Toolleen to be part of opening night. A Bucks Party added further colour to the night with the groom-to-be and his sidekicks dressing up for the occasion, while Ready 2 Race greyhound Waterfront got up as the reserve in Race 9 paying a massive $ The beauty of this track is that as a spectator you are so close to the action. It s really close and personal, which is something we haven t had here at Traralgon before. It s very exciting, Haley said.

JESAULENKO YOU BEAUTY! By Andrew Copley Race 1 on opening night at Traralgon on August 15 was put on for local trainers and they don t get any more local than Terri Morris, who won the event with her greyhound Jesaulenko. We live in a lovely spot in Traralgon just two minutes from the track, and it was so nice that we local trainers have been thought of. To win the first race at this track with Jesaulenko is a great feeling because we re now part of the history, she said. Named after legendary Carlton footballer Alex Jezza Jesaulenko, the highly promising black greyhound cruised to a comfortable six length win in heat one of the New Track Challenge, and his time of 30.50sec which was just 0.01sec outside the best time of the night over the 525m trip. Terri said the vibe surrounding the new track which has undergone a $6.2Mil redevelopment was extremely positive. We ve been waiting a long time (15 months) for the track to reopen, and it has been worth the wait. I ve heard nothing but positive comments about it and I think Traralgon is on its way to being widely regarded as the best track in Victoria, she said. Terri said the track lent itself well to clean racing for a number of reasons. The track is extremely well lit up, which can t be underestimated because vision is so important. And greyhounds just seem to have more room and more time to sort themselves out running into the bends, particularly over the 525m distance. There was a big crowd here for the picnic meeting last week and a big crowd on opening night, so people are showing their support for the club and that s a really good thing, she said. Traralgon greyhound racing is now virtually a permanent fixture in the prime time Saturday twilight timeslot, with the club also hosting a second weekly meeting for the first time in its history in the Monday twilight period.. 5

6 COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP A By Andrew Copley DIAMOND EXPERIENCE Victoria s Greyhound Adoption Program Denise concludes it is wonderful to see how excited they are with the dogs. It gives them a sense of (GAP) doesn t only find homes for pride with all the work that they ve done. greyhounds that have finished racing or If you have an organisation that would like to help never quite made it in their racing carers; out at the GAP facility or would like more information it also welcomes dozens of community about how to become a community partner, please groups who help out, or just enjoy contact the GAP office on (03) spending time with the greyhounds. Among the groups is Ivanhoe Diamond Valley, a centre for adults with disabilities based in Macleod which has been visiting the GAP facilities in Seymour on a weekly basis for over 10 years. Denise McPhee, a carer at Ivanhoe Diamond Valley, said the community partnership offered many benefits and experiences for the clients, particularly those that haven t owned pets before. It s the highlight of their week they are actually ready before I even start getting the bus and all the stuff ready to come here because the quicker we get here the more time they get to spend at GAP, Denise said. With sometimes 60 to 70 dogs at GAP at any one time, GAP Manager Jenny Layton fully appreciates the helping hand that Ivanhoe Diamond Valley clients provide. The Ivanhoe Diamond Valley clients are tremendous helpers; they re enthusiastic and help with grooming, getting the greyhounds ready for adoption and changing their beds. Two of the fellows who are here routinely, Robert and Ian, have been tremendous. They help feed the dogs every week. They enjoy it and love it so much, Jenny explains. It s not all hard work and no play for Ivanhoe Diamond Valley, with the day always culminating in a relaxing picnic lunch where they sit down and socialise in the backyard themed area for adoption and enjoy the country atmosphere.

8 FITTING TRIBUTE TO A SHORT-COURSE HERO The racing career of Hot Carbon may pale into insignificance when compared to some of the elite greyhounds running around today, but she ll always be a champion in the eyes of the Hutchy Syndicate, headed by AFL identity, Craig Hutchison (pictured). A short-course greyhound with plenty of early speed, Hot Carbon was recently retired after 48 starts, in which she netted eight wins, 10 minor placings and countless moments of joy for her 11 owners. The Hutchy Syndicate was formed in It includes 10 winners of Off The Bench s Saturday morning Dr. Who radio quiz who teamed with Hutchison to purchase Hot Carbon at GRV s 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo and that was where their exciting journey together began. Hot Carbon s retirement came about due to a drop in form in recent months, and she is now destined for a life as a much-loved pet via the Greyhound Adoption Program. When the Off The Bench team broke the news of her retirement to her owners, their love for Hot Carbon came out in spades in a special tribute played on radio throughout Victoria last month. While the referrals to her as a champion and simply the best may have been scoffed at by seasoned greyhound folk during the tribute, the amount of enjoyment this provincial class short-course sprinter provided her owners leaves little wonder as to why greyhound racing is known as the people s sport. 10 10 By Andrew Copley LUXURIOUS PRESENCE ON THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA The Greyhound Adoption Program now has a presence on the Mornington Peninsula where people can meet, interact with and adopt greyhounds. An easy freeway drive located just 10 minutes from Mornington and five minutes from Peninsula Link, the Dogs Country Club & Kennel Resort is a convenient location in Melbourne s south east. We offer five star and seven star accommodation and you don t often find that in boarding kennels, said Cory Andrews, Owner/Manager of the Dogs Country Club & Kennel Resort. We are on 13 acres on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. We have lovely large running paddocks for the dogs which is really great and (we offer) lots of cuddle time. All of our dogs have an inside sleeping area that s fully insulated so it s beautiful and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Then attached that they have an outside undercover play area so it doesn t matter what the weather is, they can still get out in the fresh air and play because we believe that is really important for their well-being. GAP Adoption Officer Michelle Fisher said there were eight greyhounds available for adoption at the facility every day. If people want to they can just come and view the dogs even if they re not ready to adopt just to get an idea what the breed is like (then they re welcome). We have our own office here which makes it a private exchange when people are adopting, Michelle said. There is a separate area on the property for people to meet the greyhounds, in which they can walk them, introduce them to any other pet dogs they may have, and watch them gallop in a fenced off area. To book an appointment to meet the greyhounds available for adoption at the Dogs Country Club & Kennel Resort on the Mornington Peninsula simply call

GAP GREYHOUND ADOPTION PROGRAM NANCY COOPER All greyhounds adopted from GAP are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, and health checked. During the foster process they quickly and easily make the transition from being a racing animal to pet. Such is the stringent nature of the GAP assessment processes that the Victorian government legislates that greyhounds successfully passing through GAP no longer have to be muzzled in public. D.O.B: 05/09/2010 Race name: SECRET GARDEN Nancy promises not to dig any holes in your secret garden if you adopt her! Nancy is a happy go lucky girl who has really come out of her shell. Nancy is available for adoption from RSPCA East Burwood. For all enquiries regarding her adoption, please contact the RSPCA on or go to www. rspcavic.org and type in the keyword Greyhound. NANCY IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION NOW! D.O.B: 24/11/2010 Race name: OUR WILFRED Cooper is a dog with a sense of humour. He gets along with other dogs and loves to play with the test dogs at GAP. His previous owner commented that he loves to play with his ball and go on walks. COOPER IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION NOW!
