2 Program Notes The exciting and rather dangerous sport o steeplechase has been around since the 1700s. Imagine racing your horse through open ields or racetracks interspersed with various obstacles that must be jumped at high speeds. Then imagine making those jumps amid a melee o other horses. This rather precarious sport originated in Ireland, where riders would race rom one town to another, oten at considerable distances; the only visible markers during the race would be a town s church steeple, hence the name steeplechase. Riders would oten be required to jump streams, ditches, ences and other obstacles in their path, which was dangerous or both horse and rider. Modern steeplechase is most oten held on racetracks with somewhat saer man-made obstacles and live hedges. Perormance Guide is a ast and exciting piece or intermediate players that maintains a steady triplet eel throughout. I possible, the rapid triplets should be played with a light, springy spiccato or sautillé bow stroke. The bounced stroke should be somewhat sticky and resonant, played near the balance point o the bow, close to the string. For a clean and percussive pizzicato, players should pluck airly close to the end o the ingerboard. The main melody should be rather articulate yet played with a good amount o weight in the bow. In order to increase the energy and excitement o the piece, be sure to emphasize all accents. About the Composer Dr. Brent Smith is Director o Orchestras and Strings at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. Prior to joining the Snow College aculty in 200, Dr. Smith taught or several years at the University o Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. As an accomplished string educator Dr. Smith has published articles with American String Teacher and currently serves on the state board o Utah's chapter o the American String Teachers Association. Dr. Smith became the 2009 Winner o the Texas Orchestra Directors Association's annual composition contest. His winning work, titled Sacagawea, is published by Wingert-ones Publications. In 2012 he won the Utah-ASTA composition contest with Bonneville, a piece inspired by the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 2000, Dr. Smith earned a Doctor o Arts degree in cello perormance rom the University o Northern Colorado with a secondary ocus in music education. He also received a Master o Music degree in cello perormance rom the University o Miami and a Bachelor o Music degree in music education rom Utah State University. Dr. Smith lives in Ephraim with his wie Marcie.
