1 The battle of Goldberg (August 23, 1813) The combat of Goldbeg was the prelude to the battle of the Katzbach. I was fought into the context of the cat and mouse game between Napoleon and the Army of Silesia led by Bluecher. After some combats and skirmish (like Lowenberg) Napoleon received the Saint-Cyr s plea for help from Dresden. Napoleon hurried in aid of his lieutenant leaving to Macdonald the pursuit of Bluecher with the III, V and XI Corps. The Allied forces were the Sacken s Corps (fronting the III Corps at several miles at north of Goldberg), and the I Prussian (under Yorck) and the Langeron s Corps fronting the V and XI Corps around the town (now named Zlotoryja in Poland) The Scenario covers the fight in Goldberg and its environs. The OOB s and the narrative have been taken from Nafziger, Fabry and Gneiseneau (see bibliography) and the maps from Google Earth and the 3rd Military Mapping Survey of Austria-Hungary. 1. MAP OF THE BATTLEFIELD MAP NOTES 1.1 All buildings are not fortified and have a +1 combat modifier. Villages contain a maximum of one units and/or one battery per building. Farms can not be occupied. 1.2 Woods (green) and high areas (brown) are rough terrain. Cavalry and artillery can move trough only in column/march column/limbered formation. 1.3 The river Katzbach is only fordable at bridges and fords. 1.4 The terrain squares are 40x40 cm (15.7 x15.7 ) at 1/3,600 scale (1 in. to 100 yds). 1/8 30/01/2009 (19:08)

SPECIAL RULES FOR GOLDBERG 3.1 Game Length h (22 turns). The French got 6 free rolls and the Allied 7. The French have the initiative and are the first side. 3.2 Deployment Prussian-Russian. Al the Langeron s corps is in the table as well as the 2 nd Prussian brigade. Bluecher is in Kopalsch. Yorck and the rest of the Prussian units are approaching the battlefield. Langeron is with the 10 th Corps. 8 th Brigade, Yorck A5 end-road 12h 1 st, 7 th, Cavalry reserve, Artillery reserve A4 12,30 h French Lauriston is with the 17 th Division 19 th Division, 6 th Light Cavalry Brigade behind the 17 th division. 10h 16 th Division and A/V D1 14h 31 st Division and A/XI C1 14h Each arriving brigade must vacate completely the arrival point before to apply the OR rule for Varying Time Arrivals. Consider the first time that point is available as two turns before the normal arrival turn. 3.3 Where is Macdonald? The actual position of Macdonald during the combat of Goldberg is uncertain and in the actual battle, the French forces were commanded by Lauriston. In this Scenario Lauriston commands both the V and XI Corps with a reduced command radius. However Macdonald could appear at C1 in any turn after 16 h. Use 1D10 starting that turn with a 0 allowing the arrival of Macdonald. Repeat the try every turn until his arrival or the game-end. After the arrival of Macdonald, Lauriston will come back to his role as commander of the V Corps. 3.4 Skirmish fire and divisional batteries (Optional) This Scenario could be used with divisional foot batteries (FA marked * and highlighted in yellow) as independent combat units. These batteries never can evade and have reduced striking power and mobility. Their effect can not be factored into the Fire Factors of Infantry units, and there are several possibilities to take that into account: 1) Use an additional -3 modifier to Infantry Fire Factors, OR 2) Modify the Rule Resolving Fire so a two losses result is converted to one loss and a one loss is a miss, OR 3) Carry out the infantry fire as usual without any modifier. The resulting losses are not marked on the target unit, but are only used to cause disorder (Recommended given the usually inefficient skirmish fire) 3/8 30/01/2009 (19:08)
4 3.5 Cavalry scale and bases The Cavalry scale is the same than that of infantry: 1/30. When necessary, multiply the cavalry figures for 3/2 (for example to determine outnumbering in mixed combat) and remove 2 cavalry figures for each 3 losses suffered. 3.6 C-i-C ratings Do not use 10 as Response number of the C-i-C s but use the values assigned to them in the OOB. 3.7 Rallying of units and avoiding rout and dispersal Routed units can try to rally without an attached general with an additional '-3' modifier. Rout and Dispersal attempts can be made without an attached general using an additional -3' modifier. A successful dispersal attempt must be preceded by a rout move. 3.8 Battalion commanders, Staff officers and such All Infantry/Cavalry brigades have commanders with A(5)+0 for command control tests when acting in an independent role. A task-force having two or more Infantry/cavalry brigades can be formed as whished by the C-i-C under the command of any of the staff officers provided in the labels. 5. VICTORY POINTS The French objective is to occupy Goldberg and catch the Allied in a disadvantageous position. The Allied objective is to maintain Goldberg and the Katzbach line. The key points and the percentage of victory points allotted are Goldberg (20%) and its bridge (15%), Hermsdorf (10%) and its bridge (15%), Geinsberg ford (5%), Nieder-Au (15%), Kopalsch s bridge (5%) and the A5, C5 and D4 end-roads (5% each). The opposing forces are different in points: French 754 vs. Prussians 963. The multiplier for the weaker side (French) is 1.28 in both NB1 and NB2 (430 and 172 victory points respectively). 6. HISTORICAL OUTCOME The French, led by Lauriston in Macdonald s absence, taken Goldsberg but the Silesian Army retired unmolested, because Bluecher assumed that Napoleon was in the area. Three days after, the Army of the Bober was defeated in the battle of Kaztbach. 7.
