The cowboy culture has long been admired for many wonderful characteristics, for example; hard work, integrity, ambition, self-reliance, family values, confidence, honesty, loyalty, having a relationship with the seasons of the year, perseverance through hard times as well as gratitude during good times. We are fortunate to have the cowboy heritage to remind us of Cowboy Essence and no matter who we are or where we are in our lives, we all have the opportunity to pursue Cowboy Essence. We see examples of cowboy essence in all aspects of our communities, cultures and society whether in a schoolteacher, farmer, physician, family member at home, firefighter, law enforcement officer, businessperson, civil service worker, outdoor recreationist, student or rancher. The definition of Article III Cowboy Essence in The Constitution of Babbitt Ranches was inspired by the leadership philosophy of Hall of Fame Coach John Wooden. 2 RON BERNDT For nearly 20 years, Ron has been a wonderful part of the Babbitt Ranches Community. First by participating at the colt sale in 1999, selling Bill Owens western artwork in the feed barn at the Redlands ranch camp on the Cataract Ranch. In 2006, Ron s friendly, gentle and fun auctioneering way of selling colts, became a hallmark of the annual colt sale. Retired in Goodnight, Texas, this longtime Horseman continues his role as auctioneer for his favorite ranches. WILY PLAYBOY 1997 BAY REFERENCE STALLION Ron knows horses, he has a particular fondness for the Driftwood bloodline. Over the past three decades, Ron has raised and bred horses, he is in high demand to work horse sales because of his knowledge in pedigrees. Ron has been auctioning at horse events from Montana to Pennsylvania. Through this work and his western art business, Ron became acquainted with the Babbitt Ranches Community. 12 THE DRIFTWOOD LEGACY A slender-barreled, deep rich bay who stood about 15 hands and weighed just ten hundred and seventy-five pounds in working shape. -Katy Peake The reputation of an aged stallion, and his ability to pass on the athletic talents which made him famous during his generations. Then, as those traits wear thin in his descendants and more fashionable bloodlines come to the fore, the horse is forgotten. It is only if the individual is so prepotent that his sons and daughters are able to perpetuate his abilities that breeders continue the line that a stallion becomes immortal. Driftwood (known as Speedie during his rodeoing days) was such a horse. Driftwood was a winning race horse and an outstanding rodeo mount. That is enough to have gained him a brief reputation among horsemen. More importantly, he passed on his speed, athletic talents, his functional good looks and willing mind to his get.
