2 National Farm and Facility Level Biosecurity User Guide for the Equine Sector The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), Equestrian Canada, and other equine stakeholders, has released a National Farm and Facility Level Biosecurity User Guide for the Equine Sector to help horse owners and custodians protect their horses from infectious diseases The biosecurity user guide complements the standard that was released in June Together, these documents will help horse owners and custodians develop and implement a biosecurity plan for a farm or facility aimed at improving horse health and reducing the risk of transmitting diseases. 4 Based on the National Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Equines, this course considers the care and management of horses in terms of the Five Freedoms of animal welfare. Let s learn together! HORSE CARE & WELFARE COURSE: Nov. 20-Dec. 10/17 10% DISCOUNT FOR HCBC MEMBERS $95.00 $85.50 The Horse Portal is an online training partnership between the HCBC and Equine Guelph. Thanks for the Lemonade! A group of four young ladies (Chloe, Natalie, Courtney and Adrienne) spent their summer running 4/10
5 a lemonade stand in Quesnel, BC to help raise money for Horse Council BC's Animal Disaster Relief Fund. Last month, the girls sent in their donation to the fund which totaled a whopping $ (that must have been some fantastic lemonade!). They enclosed a small note that read, " [the girls] would like the money to go to animals that need feed, shelter, or medication wherever in the province that the need is greatest, but preferably in the Cariboo." From us here at Horse Council and from every animal that will be receiving those funds, THANK YOU Chloe, Natalie, Courtney, and Adrienne for your amazing generosity and hard work! 8 INVASIVE SPECIES OF THE MONTH Alsike Clover ((trifolium hybridum) is native to northern Europe, a fast growing and short-lived perennial clover. The plant has semi-erect, slender, weak stems that grow to 60 cm (24 in.). These stems are indeterminate and may become quite long. Both the stems and leaf are hairless. The leaflets are finely toothed with 3 attached at a single point. It can often be distinguished from other clovers by the lack of the water mark on leaves, which shows up clearly on other clovers such as Red Clover, and the character of the leaf and flower attachment to the stems. It is poisonous to horses, in both fresh and dried in hay forms. It can trigger a severe skin reaction to sunlight or it can kill horses within 24 hours of exposure. The plant contains a toxin, thought to be an alkaloid, which causes liver damage over long term exposure in small quantities. Horses with Alsike Clover poisoning may show signs of liver disease; they may go off feed and seem colicky. They may also pass brown urine and clay-coloured manure. Skin lesions and photo-sensitivity may also develop. Offer clover-free feed immediately and keep the horse out of 8/10
9 sunlight. Seed mixes intended for horses pasture and hay should not contain Alsike Clover check labels before purchasing. If you think your horse may have ingested Alsike Clover, call your vet immediately. TRAIL OF THE MONTH This month we feature the Coombs to Parksville Rail Trail, recently opened in the Regional District of Nanaimo. The Rail Trail follows along the south side of the E&N tracks between Coombs and Parksville, and is visible from the Alberni Highway (Hwy 4A) as you near Coombs. At the Coombs end, the Rail Trail starts at the kiosk across from Station Rd where a crosswalk and pedestrian controlled beacons help you cross busy Hwy 4A. Along the way from Coombs to Parksville, you can hop on the Rail Trail from Virginia Rd, Church Rd, Fairdowne Rd, and Nicnbec Rd (off Coldwater Rd). Pedestrian controlled beacons will help you cross busy Church Rd. At the Parksville end, the Rail Trail begins at the City of Parksville's Springwood Park on Despard Ave. The trailhead with kiosk is near the dog park parking lot. Equestrian use is permitted visit: for more information and a comprehensive map. BOOK OF THE MONTH Centered Riding 2 Author: Sally Swift The long awaited sequel to the authors first work, this book continues with the concepts of centered riding and body awareness. A great read and full of great information. *Only 2 copies left in stock! 9/10
