1 NOR CAL PRESIDENTS MESSAGE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE 3/1/2014 The New Year is upon us and shoots are beginning to happen all over the state. Check the calendar and see which ones interest you and go shoot. It s a great way to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. You don t have to be a professional shooter to go have fun at the shoots, just an interest in archery and getting in some good practice with a lot of fine people. The majority of shooters don t walk away from the shoots with an award but a feeling of trying their best and having a great time. Although you may walk away with some nice raffle prizes if you buy tickets in order to support the host club and archery. If you are a member of an organized archery club you already know that the clubs make their operating funds from the open shoots that they host. If you missed the 2014 CBH/SAA Annual Hall of Fame Banquet you missed a good time and some good food. I would like to thank Jim and Julia Clawson for being on hand for anything that was needed all weekend especially setting up and running the Hospitality Room, Robert and Olivia Lawson and their Daughter Shanna for help setting up and running the Hospitality Room and for the great centerpieces at the Dinner, Paul Cordingley for supplying a some of the food required for the Hospitality Room, Linda Musser for helping with the Dinner Registration and especially my wife Deborah for the planning, purchasing and all around Girl Friday. Without these people this event would not have happened. The crowd consisted of people new to archery and those that learned the sport when crossing the country by wagon train (maybe not really that long ago). Many stories were told and experiences relived some good and some not so good but probably funny if you were not the one involved. Robert Awesome Lawson one of our own NorCal members was inducted into the Hall of Fame which is a much deserved honor. Awesome has spent most of his adult life involved in archery. The other three CBH/SAA members to be inducted into the Hall of Fame were Kathy Budding, Ron Morrett and Jeff Fabry, all very deserving of the honor. All these individuals have spent untold hours in support of archery and have been great examples of the people who partake in the sport. The NorCal Indoor Championship was held in February and to say it was a dismal failure would be an understatement. The biggest issue was that somehow it got scheduled at the same time as the Yuba-Sutter Open Shoot even though it was thought that had been checked before it was scheduled. Date conflict aside I would still like to know what the members would like to see as an indoor shoot. Is a one day event too short, would you like to see a league type event going on for a number of weeks, a Vegas type shoot, or what? We want to provide something that our members would like and that will take input from all of you. Please , call or talk to me in person as I would like to hear from you. 2 NOR CAL MARCH 2014 VICE PRESIDENT Presidents message continued from front page The petitions I talked about in the last Newsletter were discussed and voted on at the CBH/SAA Annual Meeting in January and the results were to be used by Tom Daley at the NFFA Annual Meeting. Stay tuned for the results of those petitions which I don t have. Hopefully they will be posted on the NFAA or CBH/ SAA web pages when available. Again, our organization depends on its members to let us know what you like and dislike, what you would like to see and what you want to do. Without input we are in the dark and doing what we think is best for all. I don t really like that method so please communicate to NorCal or CBH/SAA whatever you feel needs to be. 3 NOR-CAL VOL. # ONE ISSUE # 1 Hall of Fame Robert Lawson 2014 Here is just one of many stories I remember as a child. My dad had an Archery shop in the back room of our house. He kept a small variety of archery accessories hanging on the walls for purchase, trade, or for free just for someone who was in need; because that is who he is. He built a workbench in the corner of the room with a vice grip attached to the front outside corner. He would cut, fletch, nock, and make designs on arrows among other projects and creations he experimented with and created. He would do all his work on that bench and he often left little scraps and pieces behind. I loved his sloppy seconds because I would go into his Archery room and take those scraps and build little creatures. I loved using his vice to hold the pieces while the glue set up. I think I even tried to glue the vice shut a few times, on accident of course. Oh boy, if he only knew the mischief I d get up to in that little shop. I did share some of my creations with him. I could see he got a kick out of them by the smile on his face after I d show him. Though the Archery room was a place of creation and imagination for both dad and I, there was one scary thing about it. Dad had gone on a hunt somewhere and brought back a Boar. Yep, he had its head stuffed and placed that scary Pig up on the wall. Every time you walked in the room it s glaring eyes followed and stared at you no matter where you went. That thing freaked me out and was creepy! He still has it hanging in his current arrow making room. My dad was always pouring his heart into anything Archery amongst other avenues in his life. He and some friends created an amazing Archery Range on the outskirts of the town we lived in. They made and kept up the bale, targets, shooting stakes, mowed, and kept everything clean and available for all to use. Year round we would go up to the High School where the indoor Archery practice ranges was, for some much needed practice. He and mom would take my sister and I practically every weekend in summer out of town to an Archery Tournament somewhere in a three state radius. We would stay the whole weekend camping out, picking berries, playing in creeks, seeing the wildlife, including deer, rabbit, raccoons, squirrels, and bear, just so dad, mom and sometimes us kids could enjoy the full two day Archery tournament experience. We also went to a lot of indoor Archery tournaments. There was no end to Archery when I was a child. I swear dad ate, breathed, and slept Archery. It was amazing as a kid to watch all the dedication and hard work he poured into Archery his second true love of course his first true love is Mom. But above is a letter from is daughter that was not read at the dinner. It a wonderful view from his daughter, of the man we honored.

5 NOR-CAL Legislative News The February Commission meeting had the annual Big Game regulation package as part of the discussion. Adoption related to this package will be at the April meeting. The December meeting had the department submit its proposals the commission. One noticeable change is the allocation of Sheep tags. Due to a number of sheep that had died from basically pneumonia the number of tags available is now a range such as 0-4. The final available tag count will be decided at the April Commission meeting after several herd counts are performed in late winter and early spring. The newly created Wildlife Resources Committee of the Fish and Game Commission had its first meeting January 15th in LA. The Commission staff was unprepared for the volume of attendee s. Predator management is under review from the insistence of HSUS and Project Coyote. Recommendations from both organizations include eliminating the use of dogs for any mammal hunting. Predation permits only good for one animal and can only be issued after all other recommendations by DFW have been exhausted. Reclassify all non-game species to game species. No recommendations were received from the hunting community due to the lack of posting notice of what the commission was actually changing. The committee decided to continue taking comments from the public and will meet again May 7th in San Francisco. VOL. # ONE ISSUE # 1 A new incentive program has been started for Legislative Defense Fund Donations. Various Embroidered Logo wear will be available dependent on the amount of donation if the donor chooses to collect. Hats, Beanies, T-shirts, Sweatshirts, Vests and Jackets are all options with the CBH- SAA logo embroidered on left side pocket area.
