1 Amateur Shotokan Karate Association NEWSLETTER November 2009 Issue No. 50 Free Sensei Luca Valdesi 3 x W.K.F. World Kata Champion North London Shotokan Karate club held a course with Sensei Luca Valdesi, who has won 10 European kata championships and three WKF World karate championships, most recently in Tokyo, Japan. The course took place on Sunday 12 th July 2009 at Grundy Park Leisure centre in Cheshunt. The three hour course started with a long warm up with lots of stretching before going into kicking drills. This was followed by punching combinations and then work on stances and turning the hips in gyaku tsuki. The second hour saw the introduction of kata Unsu. Sensei broke down the kata showing every little detail making all the students repeat the sections until they fully understood the combinations. He would then take them all back to the beginning every time they learnt something extra. Occasionally he would split the group into two groups, those who knew the kata well and those who werenʼt too sure. By the end of the three hours every one had improved their knowledge of Unsu and even the very best had an opportunity to ask questions before we watched Sensei Valdesi perform the whole kata himself. With over 100 students training from Englandʼs very best, Jon Mottram, down to brown belts with less experience, they all finished with a credible performance of Unsu before getting changed and going home. Sensei Valdesi spoke very good English, was very approachable and open to any questions as he patiently posed for loads of photos, individually and in groups, before signing all sorts of pictures and posters. A fantastic turnout of students were inspired by the amazing and talented Luca Vadesi

2 Seaford Karate Championships 2009 Sunday 7th June 2009 saw Seaford Karate Club host the Second Invitational Karate Tournament at the Downs Leisure Centre. The entry was slightly down on last year with about 150 competitors taking part but that still meant we had good size categories and plenty of competition ahead. Our chief referee this year was Terry Robins from KMAC Brighton who traveled from France to join us. The first event up saw the weapons kata take centre stage. Harrison Horne from Tokon Kai taking a superb gold with double nunchuka s followed by team mate Daniel Fountain and Matthew Delaloye taking bronze with the Jo. The team kata event soon followed and Seaford won gold and silver in the novice kata with FSKA Bracknell Tigers taking bronze. The intermediate category saw a Seaford clean sweep and Tokon Kai narrowly beat Seaford in a close final of the Senior team kata. In the first individual event of the day, 7 years and below kata, Lewis Finch from Seaford won the gold medal beating 13 other competitors over two rounds with Seyron Srishangar (BASK) into silver and Harrison Clarke from Complete Martial Arts (CMA) into bronze. Rohan Mathiyalagan (BASK) took the gold in the 8-10 years old novice to 7th kyu against a large category of 20 competitors, leaving Jothiga Rahulotchan in second and Brandon Harris (Seaford) in third. In the 6th 4th Kyu division Jamie Allison from North Birmingham won the gold while Tyler Stacey (Tokon Kai) took silver and Younis Awad (BASK) took the bronze in a group of 15. In the boys and girls categories novice to 7th Kyu, Asvin Puvaneswararajah (BASK) won, followed by team mate Dhanya Yogaratum in Silver and Sukkdeep Loyal in Bronze from Ramgarhia. In the intermediate section 12 students battled it out with Matthew Delaloye from Seaford winning the gold followed by Jaskamal Sagoo from Ramgarhia with the silver and bronze going to Seaford s Jai Rajput. In the brown belt section Emily Delaloye (Seaford) beat the other 10 competitors to the gold medal with Jatinder Ram taking the silver and Damian Shepherd from Seaford finishing with the Bronze. Tokon Kai Karate club dominated the black belt section with 10 of the 14 competitors from Steve Robert s association. First place went to Daniel Fountain, followed closely by Harry Horne and Zak Stacey taking bronze. Category 8 saw the male and female novice to 4th Kyu adults compete and with 14 competitors Lee Finch from Seaford came out the winner, beating Patric Caines from North Birmingham with Tarandip Chana from BASK winning the bronze. The female senior kata was dominated by Gemma Peacefull from Tokon kai with Sian Pomeroy from Seaford in silver and Chloe Sutherland from Complete Martial Arts taking a bronze. The male senior kata saw 10 competitors battle it out for supremacy with Sellathurai Ganeshalingam from BASK winning the gold while silver went to Simon Hearden from KICKS Brighton and bronze to Jasmeet Singh from SKO Southall. The Masters open kata was again won by Sellathurai Ganeshalingam from BASK to take his second gold of the day with Steve Woolston from Mushinkan (Eastbourne) taking silver and Malcolm Johnstone from Tokon Kai taking a well earned bronze. After a short break for the referees the kumite kicked off with the Men s team kumite. Six teams battled it out and the final saw Seaford A beat Southall and CMA to face North Birmingham who had beaten KICKS and Seaford B. In the final the first fight went to Seaford, then Birmingham fought back in the second to level the score. The deciding fight saw Seaford go 1-0 up before the opponents fought back again to level the score and then take the deciding point in a nail biting conclusion. This result saw North Birmingham retain their title, leaving Seaford as runners up and CMA and Seaford B with bronze medals.

3 The childrens kumite started with the boys and girls 9 years and below, under 4 3.Tyler Stacey from Tokon Kai beat Seyon Srishanger BASK in the final 9-3 leaving Jamie Allison (North Birmingham) and Seaford s Brandon Harris with the bronze medals. In the over 4 3 division Rhys Salmon also from Tokon Kai defeated Anaise Harney (FSKA Bracknell) in the final 3-2 with Jagjit Virdee and Kimran Sangha both from SKO Southall taking bronze medals. In the year olds under 4 10 Lewis Johnstone from Tokon Kai took a fantastic gold medal 3-0 beating Gabriel Shields from CMA into silver with Solomon Hendon from Seaford and Tom Peters (FSKA Bracknell) taking bronze medals. In the over 4 10 Chris Fleischer from Seaford swept aside 20 other opponents to beat Dan Tipp (Tokon Kai) 7-6 to the gold. Bronze medals went to William Scott (CMA) and Harry Horne from Tokon Kai who had a great day with the medals. The year olds under 5 3,saw an all Tokon Kai final with Brandon Stacey beating team mate Daniel Fountain 4-0 and bronze medals won by Janani Hariskandaraj (BASK) and Jaskamal Sagoo (Ramgarhia). In the over 5 3 Matthew Delaloye (Seaford) beat some hard opposition before facing Adrian Hooker from Tokon Kai in the final. Adrian fell over in the final and as Matthew came in for the punch Adrian hurt his wrist and couldn t continue, handing Matthew the gold (his third of the day and 1 bronze), with Adrian settling for silver and Tim Calliafas (Red Oak) and Georgia Starkey (Tokon Kai) taking bronze medals. In the Female Open Kumite Gemma Peacefull swept aside all others to win the final 8-3 leaving Brenda Smale (FSKA) to take the silver and Sian Pomeroy (Seaford) and Chloe Sutherland (CMA) leaving with bronze medals. The male novice and intermediate events saw Patric Caines (North Birmingham) defend his title from last year beating Steve Hopkins (Seaford) 1-0 in the final to take gold. The bronze medals were taken by the injured Haydn Willetts and Lee Finch, both Seaford karateka. The male senior kumite saw 20 competitors battle it out for supremacy. Colin Simmonds from North Birmingham once again reigned as champion winning a very close enchosen (extra time) in the final, 4-3 against the popular Edmend Nela from ASK Brighton. Bronze medals were won by Chris Maulkin (Red Oak) and David Forbes (North Birmingham) who both won some close and hard fights. The last event of the day saw the Master Kumite for the over 40 s. Colin Simmonds had another fantastic day winning all his six fights and defeating club mate Patric Caines 5-1, both from North Birmingham Karate Club, leaving Malcolm Johnstone and John Mackman both from Tokon Kai picking up bronze medals. The day was finished by 6.30pm, and despite a few injuries that were mostly dealt with by the first aid, everyone was on their way home smiling. Many thanks to everyone who attended our tournament and I sincerely hope you all enjoyed competing and look forward to another event next year. My sincere thanks go to all the referees and judges who volunteered their help on the day. Chief referee Terry Robins along with Harvinder Sagoo, Paul Stouchbury, Ganesh, Rob Fossella, Christine Knight, Peter Foster, Dave Hare, Ian Hollidge, Russell Peters, Colin Simmonds, Steve Jakes, Angie Pepper and Simon Lambert. 4 Ramgarhia Karate Championships 2009 Sunday 23rd August 2009 saw Seaford Karate Club take a squad of seven competitors to the Ramgarhia Karate Championships at Brunell University in Uxbridge, London. While Seaford's three instructors Martin Dean, Steve Jakes and Angie Pepper were either coaching or refereeing our competitors took 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 4 bronze medals against six different Associations. Competitor of the day Emily Delaloye won gold after three rounds in the brown belt kata, beating a group of 13 competitors including two from Romania in the final. Finlay Jakes performed well in the boys yellow and green belt category but had a difficult draw being first up to perform and could not make it into the final. Matthew Delaloye won his event over two rounds to take Seaford's second gold in the boy's purple belt category and Sian Pomeroy at only 16 years old finished with bronze in the Senior ladies kata over two rounds, beating experienced black belts, with the Romanian favourite winning. In the team kata Seaford competed against 8 other teams and finished equal first. In a rematch the Romanian 'A' team pipped Seaford by 0.1 to win the gold, leaving Seaford taking the silver and Romania 'B' taking the bronze. In the kumite events Matthew Delaloye narrowly lost in the first round 7-6 while Sully Mayhew picked up the bronze medal in the boys purple belt event. Damian Shepherd also took bronze in the boys brown belt kumite and Chris Fleischer won his first fight before losing against the eventual winner 8-5 in the semi final to finish the day with another bronze medal. Sensei Dave Hazard Course 2009 Three senior grades from Seaford Karate Club attended a seminar with A.S.K. Sensei Dave Hazard at his old Cardinal Newman dojo in Brighton. Angie Pepper, Simon Lambert and Simon Hill travelled over to Brighton for the evening course and got to train with the various grades under the experienced eye of Sensei Hazard who now lives in Nottingham.
