DON T ROLL SICK (FLU, SKIN INFECTIONS, ETC.) KEEP A CLEAN UNIFORM Wash and dry your uniform and belt as soon as possible after each training session. SHOWER, BRUSH YOUR TEETH, USE DEODORANT Unpleasant odors are very distracting and may leave you with no willing training partners. TRIM AND FILE YOUR NAILS Scratches can be entering points for life-threatening bacteria such as MRSA, etc. NO BLOOD ON THE MATS If you begin to bleed, leave the mat immediately to tend to the wound. Make sure the bleeding is completely stopped and the wound is covered. Clean up any blood on the mat as soon as possible. NO SHOES ON THE MATS Do not enter the mat after walking barefoot on the carpet without cleaning/sanitizing your feet. The mats are cleaned with bleach solution (hospital disinfecting strength) after every session.
THE SAFETY OF YOUR TRAINING PARTNER IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Do not try to injure your training partners in any way. Roll weight-appropriately, size appropriately. Take into consideration your partner s injuries and physical limitations. Refrain from reckless or malicious behaviour. YOUR OWN SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Tap early, tap often, and play within your physical limitations. Do not put yourself in a position where a misstep on your partner's side could lead to injury (e.g., do not stack yourself on your neck). Protect your knees, neck, and lower back. YOUR AND YOUR PARTNER S SAFETY ARE THE INSTRUCTOR S RESPONSIBILITY The instructor may ask you to stop the roll at any point he feels the risks overcome the learning benefits of continuing the position. If the instructor asks you to stop or taps on your or your partner's behalf, please stop immediately! A skilled jiu-jitsu player is capable of staying safe AND preventing any harm from coming to his partner. Accidents rarely occur between two considerate partners, no matter how intensely they roll.
NO DANGEROUS MOVES Train as realistically as safety allows! The following moves are not allowed: supplexes slams neck cranks/cervical locks heel hooks small joint manipulation twisting leg locks biceps/calf slicers wristlocks knee bars These moves can cause permanent damage and may not be felt until the damage has already been done. No grabbing the windpipe fingers in nose, mouth, etc. attacking the groin strikes of any kind pulling the hair dynamic breaks grabbing collarbone shin bars knee-on-throat These moves fall outside the scope of sports jiu-jitsu and do not require any practice. NO PAIN-COMPLIANCE MOVES Pain compliance moves are unlikely to submit a stronger opponent but are sure to injure your partner. DO NOT CRANK ANY SUBMISSION Control and wait for the tap give yourself the opportunity to improve your control and give your partner the opportunity to attempt to escape.
RESPECT THE TAP Let go immediately - even if there is no submission! People may tap due to... claustrophobia panic attacks hyperventilation pre-existing injuries gassing out cramps dehydration feeling unwell discomfort, etc. Regardless, it is your partner's prerogative to stop the match at any point, no explanations required! START FROM THE GROUND (GUARD, MOUNT, ETC.) Do not start standing or disconnected; our mats are not suited for throws or takedown and most injuries (eating a knee to the face, rolling over an ankle, banging heads, etc.) happen as people look to establish grips, jump guard, etc. Throws and takedowns will be practiced during class against a cooperative partner. WORK WITH YOUR ASSIGNED PARTNER You will be paired with someone who can provide you a challenge, without risk to your safety. Do not assign yourself to newcomers - leave it to the instructor to invite (or not invite) people into the class, do the pairing, as the instructor may have information about the newcomer that you are not aware of.
WHITE UNIFORM White in jiu-jitsu traditionally symbolizes peace and a clear mind. The white uniform promotes cleanliness and personal hygiene. Close your gi and tie your belt after every round Never throw the uniform or the belt on the ground (it's the equivalent of a medal of honor, etc.) No ripped, torn or stained uniforms RASHGUARD A rashguard is required for men and women, for hygiene and modesty. FLIP-FLOPS Wear flip-flops off the mats and walk barefoot on the mats. DO NOT WEAR THE FOLLOWING jewelry, piercings, rings, etc. make up perfume (to prevent injury to yourself or others) (not to ruin someone else's uniform) (due to allergies)
DO NOT SNEAK IN/OUT Make your presence known before stepping onto the mats. Thank the instructor before leaving the mats. BOW WHEN ENTERING/LEAVING THE MAT This is like ringing the bell or calling out "Anyone home?" as you go through the door. GREET EVERYONE ON THE MAT INDIVIDUALLY First greet the class instructor (regardless of rank), then by rank from high to low. NO FOUL LANGUAGE The mats are a family environment. Please refrain from swearing, making lewd jokes, or use of innuendo; jiu-jitsu is only awkward if you make it, don t assume everyone shares the same sense of humor. Do not leave the mats or remove your uniform before the end of class and you are done rolling.
PRACTICE THE DRILLS Save your questions for later, after you've given the move a go. The instructor will come around to answer any questions. DO NOT TEACH (AKA, ADDING YOUR FLAVOR) The version of the move being taught will be at the appropriate level of detail and safety. NO FREE-ROLLING Refrain from adding-on to a drill after its purpose has been achieved (e.g., going for submissions during guard-passing drills). BE A GOOD UKE/PARTNER Collaborate during demonstration of the move by giving the resistance required for the move to work. Remind your partner of any missing detail by, e.g., gently pulling back the arm that is meant to be trapped, or by resisting your partner's move in the wrong direction, without countering, or escaping the position. Refrain from lounging, texting, or holding side conversations during class.
MODESTY On the mats, we are all equal. Refrain from talking about your station in life. POSITIVITY No talk of recent divorce, unemployment, etc. We all come here to forget our problems - not to share them! HUMILITY (AKA, NO BRAGGING/SULKING) Refrain from bragging about or celebrating your success, your partner also made a mistake. Refrain from having outbursts of frustration or making excuses for your failures, your partner also did something correctly. Never take full credit for your success or failure: it belongs 50% to you and 50% to your partner. Refrain from making statements such as "I was going 20%" or "I let her get that". HONESTY (AKA, NO POSING/BS ING) Don't knowingly misrepresent your level of understanding (e.g., pretending you already knew a technique that is being shown to you, or repeating something you heard without understanding it) or the origin of a move (e.g., presenting a technique you learned from someone as your own) or your rank (e.g., sandbagging or self-promoting/demoting) or paying lip service to values your don t practice (e.g., talk about being technical, then spazzing during rolls).
SHAKE/TOUCH HANDS BEFORE AND AFTER THE ROLL Always thank your partner for trusting you with his health. CALL OUT IF SOMEONE IS ABOUT TO GET INJURED Same as you'd do if a stranger on the streets was about to get run over. NEVER SEEK TO HUMILIATE ANYONE Building your self-confidence should never come at the cost of destroying someone else's! NO COACHING/TEACHING Instead, help people by rolling with them in a weight-appropriate, size-appropriate, level-appropriate manner. Open mat is a time to troubleshoot, explore, experiment, and give non-verbal feedback. SHARE THE MATS Whether you are rolling, drilling, or sharing moves:......stop your roll and reposition yourself if you are about to run into others. NO STALLING Hold a position for 10 seconds to test your control, then try to progress. The ball is in your court!
NO PRANKS, HORSEPLAY, ROUGHOUSING, OR FIGHTING Jiu-jitsu is safe because we are aware and prepared to counter. Do not launch surprise attacks, as you may injure your friends. NO SOLICITING Do not use the school to promote your business, your church, your political party, etc. USE THE MATS ONLY DURING CLASS TIME Do not invite others to use the gym before or after class time. PAY YOUR DUES ON TIME CHANGE IN THE CHANGING ROOM ONLY RESPECT EVERYONE - OF ALL AGES AND CULTURES NO FOOD, DRINK, OR CHEWING GUM ON THE MATS BE MINDFUL OF THE WALLS AND MIRRORS People under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave immediately
