Rocket Review A Message From Your Dixie Olds President My Mother always told me that the older I got the faster time would pass. She was right. Seems as if it was just a few short weeks ago I was writing a President s message (January) and already we are into the month of March. We ve had some warm, beautiful days and I m sure many of you are looking forward to getting your Oldsmobiles ready for another car show season. Our club has been invited to participate in an Atlanta area Easter Parade on March 27, 2016 and we have the BOP&C show coming up later this spring, on April 29-30, 2016 to name a couple. More on these events as well as others appear at the end of the newsletter. Planning for the Oldsmobile Club of America (OCA) Nationals continues. Another joint meeting was held Saturday, February 20th at the Marriott Meadowview, the host hotel, in Kingsport, TN with around 30 in attendance. As many of you know, this is a joint venture between our chapter, The Music City Rockets and the Oldsmobile Club of America. Much was accomplished at the meeting, including an update from Entourage Management showing that 105 people and 73 cars were registered as of the meeting date. A very good start for this early in the game as the host hotel and one of the overflow hotels are completely booked and a second overflow hotel is nearly full. This OCA Nationals has the potential for record breaking attendance! During our visit, we toured the facility, including the indoor convention center and the outdoor show field and swap meet areas. The layout of the parking lot will provide ample space for both show cars and swap meet vendors and special displays will include a 1966 Toronado and a 1937 Olds powered Cord owned by E.L. Cord s grandson. Additionally, representatives from the City of Kingsport did a presentation on The Meadowview Marriott in Kingsport, TN Continued on Page 2

Plans are also underway for our annual Gathering to be held this year, October 7th and 8th in downtown Cartersville, GA. The Cruise-in will be Friday from 6 until 9 pm and the car show Saturday from 8 am until 3 pm. This year, if you register in advance you will be eligible for a drawing for $100 cash! The registration fee is non-refundable and you do not have to be present to win. One hundred per cent of the proceeds from The Gathering will benefit the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, Michigan. This is the only museum in the world dedicated to the legacy of R.E. Olds and Oldsmobile. Your support is greatly appreciated. Special thanks this month goes to Dixie Olds member Amy Becham. Not only is she the creator and editor of The Rocket Review, our new newsletter, she has also agreed to take on responsibilities as our new Membership Chairman. Amy, we appreciate the hard work you do for the club. Please remember fellow club member Michael Blanchard who is recovering from surgery. In closing, I would like to thank our Dixie Olds Board members, Stefan, Vicki, Nancy and our club representative, Joe plus the many other volunteers in the club who are working tirelessly, not only for the betterment of the club but to insure we have a successful Nationals event in July. The Dixie Olds Club 2016 annual dues are $15 payable by cash or check. In 2017, yearly club dues will increase to $20 but members can prepay their 2017 annual dues anytime during the 2016 year and save $5. 3 Rocket Review Phoenix & Fenders Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show The 9th annual Phoenix & Fenders Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, 2016, from 11 am until 3 pm at Sonoraville High School, 7340 Fairmount Highway SE, Calhoun, GA This event is open to all makes and models, including trucks and motorcycles, and the registration fee is $25. The Dixie Olds Club has been well represented in years past and even won the club participation award a few years ago. This is always a fun event and we hope many of you can attend this year. 4 Member Sightings Rocket Review Jerry Hicks was recently spotted driving a 1976 Cutlass Salon in Cream Gold that was built in the (now leveled) Doraville Assembly Plant. It s a project car that he has owned for 2.5 years and is slowly bringing back to her original glory. She still has her original 350 V-8 engine and 3-speed auto transmission, with bucket seats and floor shifter. At a mere 64,000 miles, Jerry enjoys driving her as much or more than his other three Oldsmobiles. Karen and Joe Neely made a grand appearance on a cold day in their 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible. It s their second one, named Ruby II their first one was also red and named Ruby. Joe and Karen have had Ruby II for two years. It has a new top, new windshield, new radial tires, and a modern radio with CD player hidden in the glove box!
