1 Pacific Division HOTLINE Charlie Neilson, Division Director Paul Jager, Division Tech Director September 2003 Lena Billington, Administrative Assistant Tech Line: Tuesday & Thursday, 7-9 p.m Financial Way, Glendora, CA (626) Fax, (626) (626) Fax, (626) Bob Johnson, Photographer, (661) NEWS FROM THE PACIFIC DIVISION Severance, August add their names to 2003 Pacific Division winners list by John Jodauga In a Division 7 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season dominated by two-time winners Morgan Lucas, Mark Niver, and Doug Gordon, the status quo was shaken up by Joey Severance and Ron August Jr. s respective victories in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. Ross Wilson also broke into the winner s circle with his Comp triumph. The rest of the victors included more familiar names, such as Jimmy DeFrank (Super Stock), Kyle Seipel (Stock), Jack Beckman (Super Comp), Kevin McClelland (Super Gas), Gary Thompson (Super Street), Scott Pollacheck (Kerker Sportsman Motorcycle), and Tom Hall (Korbel Super Eliminator). NHRA Division 7 Director Charlie Neilson said, "This was the rescheduled running of the Sacramento event that had been postponed from its original date of April because of heavy rain. We had a car count of 421, which is outstanding for the middle of August, and, despite the warmer temperatures, we still managed to set a pair of national records in Comp. All in all, it was an excellent event. Now, we can focus our attention on our Division 7 finale in Las Vegas Oct. 30-Nov. 2, which is one of the biggest races of the year in terms of car count and impact on the final national standings." Severance, who normally competes in Division 6, quietly entered the Top Alcohol Dragster field with a fifth-best against Don Hudson s pole-position shot of Severance defeated No. 4 qualifier Mitch Myers in the first round, to 5.692, then upset Hudson in the semi s, to On the other side of the ladder, Duane Shields ran quicker with times of and to earn respective wins over Chris Demke and Larry Miersch. Severance picked up the pace with a (low e.t. of the meet) in the final to easily outdistance Shields Shields came away with top speed honors for his in the second round. Bob Johnson Ron August Jr. drove his 02 Camaro, far lane, to a Top Alcohol Funny Car victory over Steven Gasparrelli s 02 Firebird when Gasparrelli crossed the centerline at the top end and hit the two cones at the finish line. August, competing in only his third Division 7 event of the year, established his presence early with a No. 1 qualifying clocking of that stood as low e.t. of the event. August s 02 Camaro defeated Tom Bristow s 03 Firebird in the first round, to 6.428, then quickened slightly to a in the second round to best the of Robert Lee s 02 Camaro. Steve Gasparrelli, still looking for his first Division 7 win of the year after a runner-up finish in Phoenix, reached the final again after putting away Bill Gallio and Bret Williamson with respective times of and In the runoff, Gasparrelli actually reached the finish line first in a close side-by-side contest, but because his car crossed the centerline and knocked out the last two cones, he was disqualified and the win was given to August. Wilson s Comp victory came at the expense of turbocharger veteran Ken Duttweiler as Wilson s D/SMA 95 Olds Achieva ran an on the 9.30 index to defeat Duttweiler s shutoff Duttweiler s BB/AT 96 Cutlass had a decidedly more successful run in the semi s with a to stop Wayne Ramay s A/ND, which clocked a on the 7.70 standard. Duttweiler had run so quick that he had his 7.66 index CIC d to a 7.50 for the final. DeFrank repeated his Sonoma victory, driving his family s California Car Cover Co. GT/HA 87 Camaro to a final-round victory over his brother Tony s GT/GA 98 Grand Prix. DeFrank took the win with a shutoff on his dial as Tony was well off his dial with a slowing Tony earned his final-round berth with a.014-over against Jim Grossi s red-lighting 96 Olds Achieva, and DeFrank had a bye. The win enabled DeFrank to move past Tony for second place in the Division 7 Super Stock standings behind points leader Tibor Kadar. Seipel s Stock victory enabled him to leap from third to first in the Division 7 standings, and he capped the winning weekend by driving his B/FIA 98 Firebird to page 3

3 from page 1 to a.026-over win against Tommy Gaynor s J/SA 85 Camaro. Gaynor had the misfortune of breaking out by.005-second with a clocking of Seipel advanced in the semi s with a win over George Barr s H/SA 70 Chevelle when Barr fouled with a light. Gaynor recorded a.025-over win against Gary Humrighouse s F/SA 69 Camaro, which ran slightly quicker with a.022-over after a late.080 light against Gaynor s quicker Winternationals winner Beckman continued to practice what he preaches at Frank Hawley s NHRA Drag Racing School and scored his first Division 7 win of the year. Beckman reached the winner s circle thanks to his victory over Dustin Hentges, who fouled with a light. Hentges advanced to the final with an to win over Dean Hall, who runnerupped in the Korbel Super Eliminator final, and Beckman had an bye. Former national event winner McClelland scored his first Division 7 Super Gas victory since the 2001 Bakersfield event by driving his 27 Ford roadster to a to holeshot win over Terry Keddington s 67 Camaro in the final. McClelland earned his victory with a.028 reaction time against Keddington s.056. Keddington had pushed out Wally Jacks 74 Vega with a too quick in the semi s, and McClelland had a bye run. Thompson became Division 7 s most prolific winner of the year after scoring his third Super Street triumph. The victory boosted his lead over second-place Dennis Paz to a 395 to 352 margin. Thompson and his 86 Corvette defeated Jeff Fear in his 75 Vega in a to final after defeating Paz in the second round. Pollacheck s victory in Kerker Sportsman Motorcycle, which was capped by a.098-over to.212-over win against Craig Holsey s 84 Godzilla, gave Pollacheck an even larger lead in the standings. Pollacheck now has 371 points, compared to second-place John Widmann s 259. Pollacheck s 76 Kawasaki stopped Trace St. Germain in the semi s with a.014-over 8.84, and Holsey forced Greg Liskey to break out by.014-second with his.031-over Korbel Racing teammates Tom and Dean Hall met in the Korbel Super Eliminator final. Tom s 62 Impala prevailed with a.013-over when Dean s dragster broke out by.019-second with a For complete stats and photo coverage, see National DRAGSTER (Sept. 5). Hail to the Jr. champions After a grueling 14-event schedule, the Pacific Division has crowned four champions in each region, North and South. The eight of them will compete at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona Nov. 6-9 for the four overall Pacific Division crowns. The South Region champions are Logan Daly, Brittany Johnson, Ty Sanders, and Leah Pruett. The North contingent is made up of Cameron Fauset, D.J. Stone, Ryan McClanahan, and Todd Cooper. Several of the championships were not decided until the final rounds of the final event. Also, congratulations to Amber Cherry and Johnson on their big wins at the NHRA O Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals in Denver and to Sacramento s all-girl Team 2 for winning the championship. Cherry and Johnson anchored the team, whose other members were Kristie Thompson, who finished as runner-up to Johnson; Kristie s sister, Amie Thompson; Katie Dorris; Pruett; Jenica Milanesio; Amber Krzywicki; Alexis McClanahan; and Gabby Giuliano. Korbel Super Eliminator Series Tom Hall defeats nephew Dean in final SACRAMENTO RACEWAY PARK, Sacramento, Calif. (Aug ) Tom Hall won his first Korbel Super Eliminator Series event of the season when he drove Gary Heck s Korbel Champagne sponsored 62 Chevy Impala to a final-round win over his nephew, Dean Hall. It was the first time in series history that the Korbel-sponsored cars had met in a title round. Jim Luttrell s record-setting mph blast took some of the shine off the all- Korbel final round. The awesome performance will go into the books as the first Super Eliminator run to eclipse the 200-mph mark. Luttrell made three qualifying passes that surpassed 200 mph with his 470-inch Chrysler Hemi powered Yancer dragster; his best was mph. He lost in the second round to Del Cox Jr. Luttrell credits his recent performances to J.W. Performance, Gear Vendors, Yancer Race Cars, crewmember Alex Selak, and wife Lisa. Tom Hall used.009 reaction times in the first two rounds to defeat Jimmy Johnson and John Richardson, respectively, then recorded a.026 light to beat points contender George Prather. He had a bye in the semifinals. Dean Hall drove the Korbel Brandy sponsored dragster to the final by stopping Geneva Nash, Robert Dietz, Mike MacBrair, and Alex Selak. In the final, Tom Hall had the better reaction,.039 to.088, and won with a 7.91, on the 7.90 index. Dean recorded a 7.88, Entering the final event of the season in Las Vegas Oct. 30-Nov. 2, Carolyn Hills holds a 10-point lead over Cox, 269 to 259, and Prather is third with 258. 5 Jeg s Allstars team set Racers hoping to get their kicks at Route 66 No team travels farther to participate in the Jeg s Allstars event than the group from the Pacific Division. This year s team is heading to Route 66 Raceway with one mission: to capture the 2003 Jeg s Allstars team championship for the first time. The Pacific Division has been dismissed over the years and at times even laughed at for being a bunch of laid-back West Coast racers, but this year s bunch is heading to Chicago with outstanding credentials. And don t forget that Route 66 begins in the Pacific Division. It just feels right. Since the inaugural Allstars event in 1985, the Pacific Division has had sporadic success individually and as a team. But this year, each member of the team knows this is the best chance ever to bring home the team championship. It was sometimes a tough sell to get the Pacific Division s best racers to the event, but it was no problem this year. This season s team, having heard that last year s group had such a great time, is champing at the bit to get there. The drivers can t wait to get their kicks at Route 66. Nor can they wait to compete against NHRA s best Sportsman racers. They are proud to be part of a team that will make every racer in the Pacific Division proud. And they are going to look sharp. Thanks to Dave Kommel and Richard Shute at Auto Imagery, who are supplying the team with nice shirts. Pacific Division s 2003 Jeg s Allstars team Morgan Lucas, Top Alcohol Dragster Hot off a Mac Tools U.S. Nationals victory, Lucas is in a tight battle for the national championship. In his rookie year, he reeled off two victories in five events to earn the top spot. Steve Gasparrelli, Top Alcohol Funny Car After destroying a car at the Sonoma Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Gasparrelli rebuilt and came from behind to take the top spot. He is still adjusting to the new car, but Chicago should be the place where all his tough luck ends and hard work pays off. Ed Sigmon, Comp This duel again came down to the last event. Sigmon s car may not be the fastest in Comp, but his consistency and his more than 30 years of experience in the class should pay big dividends for the team. Jimmy DeFrank, Super Stock DeFrank supplants brother Tony as the division representative in Again, it came down to the last event, and DeFrank s success in pressure situations in a variety of conditions is tough to match. His racing family has plenty of experience in Jeg s Allstars competition. Jim Meador, Stock Meador may not be a household name outside of the Pacific Division, but his consistency and two consecutive event victories to begin the 2003 season enabled him to wrap up the Allstars title by merely qualifying at the last event. Thomas Bayer, Super Comp In the Pacific Division s ultracompetitive Super Comp category, Thomas, in another of the Lucas Oil team cars, eked out the top spot by one point. Thomas late-rounds experience at divisional events featuring 150 or more cars will prove invaluable. Kevin Kleineweber, Super Gas This class was invented in the Pacific Division, and no other division has as many competitors in the category. At event after event, Kleineweber was in the late rounds. Of more than 250 Pacific Division Super Gas competitors in the last year, Kleineweber took the top spot by just two points. Gary Thompson, Super Street Thompson is on a hot streak. He has won the last three events he has entered, including the Seattle national event. In taking the top spot, Thompson had to win the last division race and defeat his nearest competitor no later than the second round. He accomplished that to keep his hot streak alive. Not enough praise and thank-yous can be passed on to the staff at Jeg s Mail Order for their sponsorship and support of the event. We thank them for their continued support of Sportsman racing and the Jeg s Allstars event. Look out Chicago, here we come!
