In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Bret Williamson made an even bigger move with his first victory of the year moving from seventh to third in the divisional standings and now trails second-place Ed Marx by only 11 points. Other winners of the event were Ed Schuck Jr. (Comp), Jimmy DeFrank (Super Stock), Steven Wann (Stock), Joe Roubicek (Super Comp), Anthony Castillo (Super Gas), Carl Hagen (Super Street), and Scott Pollacheck (Kerker Motorcycle). Lucas qualified No. 1 with a (low e.t. of the meet) and set top speed honors at mph. Niver, who had won the last two Division 7 races (in Tucson, Ariz., and Bakersfield, Calif.), qualified third with a , barely behind Darryl Hitchman s In terms of performance, Lucas was in a class of his own throughout eliminations, making consecutive runs of 5.335, 5.356, and The next-quickest competitor was Hitchman, who advanced to the final with a to win over Steve Federlin in the semi s. Hitchman s car broke during his burnout prior to the final, and Lucas ran a solo 5.358, Williamson matched Lucas efforts in Top Alcohol Funny Car, qualifying No. 1 with a and running low e.t. (5.668) and top speed (251.58) of the meet. Bret Williamson celebrated his Top Alcohol Funny Car win after defeating Dennis Taylor in the final. Williamson also qualified No. 1 and set low e.t. and top speed. Dennis Taylor s 02 Camaro actually outran Williamson s 01 Corvette in the first round of eliminations, to 5.704, in their respective wins over John Weaver and John Patton, but Williamson improved his pace to to defeat Robert Lee s 02 Camaro in the second round, and Taylor slowed to a in his victory over Doug Gordon s 02 Camaro. In the final, it was all Williamson, who ran a to beat Taylor s off-pace Schuck s Comp win came at the expense of veteran Ed Sigmon s C/SR 34 Chevy. Schuck cut a.017 light with his C/ED and ran a.484-under to defeat Sigmon s.464-under and.030 reaction time. Sigmon, winner of the Bakersfield event, advanced to the final when Scott McClay recorded a foul with his C/ED, and Schuck combined a.013 light with a to defeat Scott Hedlund s B/SM 02 Cavalier, which ran a quicker.546-under but was undone by a tardy.125 light. DeFrank won his first Division 7 race since last year s event in Pomona with a.039 light and a.036-over from his GT/HA 87 Camaro. He defeated Joe Schweigert s.066 light and.031-over from his SS/JA. Tibor Kadar s GT/HA 92 Firebird, winner of this year s Tucson event, was DeFrank s victim in a heads-up semifinal showdown. DeFrank overcame Kadar s.018 to.051 starting-line advantage for a dominating to victory. Runner-up Schweigert produced a fine package,.015 light and.007-over run, to best Mark Faul s GT/FA 98 Grand Am in the other semifinal contest. Hagen advanced to the final when Stephanie Warn left too soon with her 98 Firebird. Pollacheck ran an.008-over with his 02 Kawasaki to defeat Greg Pfau s 91 Kawasaki in the Kerker Motorcycle final. Korbel Super Eliminator Series Fiello moves to fourth with victory INFINEON RACEWAY, Sonoma (July 4-6) Jonathan Fiello won his first Korbel Super Eliminator title when he defeated Don Steed in the final at the fourth stop on the 2003 series schedule. Despite not entering the first race of the season, Fiello moved into fourth place in the Korbel series points standings after the win, 41 behind leader Carolyn Hills. Fiello advanced to the final by defeating Jimmy Johnson in round one, Dan Dickey in round two, and Roger Hall in round three. In the quarterfinals, he used a on the 7.90 index to stop 2001 series champ Dean Hall, who lost with a In the semi s Fiello ran a to beat Ray Shearer s Steed drove the Oluma dragster to the final with a first-round bye, a second-round defeat of Jim Hughes, and a third-round defeat of Mike Blackburn. 5 Mopar Performance Parts Renews Sponsorship Of Super Stock Hemi Challenge At Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Mopar Performance Parts has renewed its sponsorship of NHRA s Mopar Performance Parts Super Stock Hemi Challenge, set for Friday, Aug. 29, during the 49 th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. More than SS/AA Plymouth Barracudas and Dodge Darts will compete for the coveted $10,000 bonus awarded to the winner of the Hemi Challenge. For three straight years, Mopar Performance Parts has supported the popular Super Stock Hemi Challenge, said Len Imbrogno, NHRA director of Sportsman racing and member tracks. The Hemi Challenge program brings together the best SS/AA Hemi cars from all over the country to compete against each other in a program that continues to grow in popularity. The Darts and Barracudas we see entered in the Hemi Challenge at Indianapolis have quickly become favorites of Sportsman fans everywhere. The limited-production Hemi-powered Barracudas and Darts made famous by legendary NHRA pioneers Ronnie Sox and Dick Landy in the 1960s won numerous national events and national championships. We re expecting a huge turnout this year, said David Hakim, Mopar Performance Parts product line manager. Many new cars are being built just for this race. Barona Dragstrip joins NHRA Pacific Division The Pacific Division welcomes Barona Dragstrip, an eighthmile paved track on the Barona Indian Reservation, which is between Lakeside and Ramona in California (approximately 3 1/2 miles northeast of the Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino). 12 In memory It is with great sadness that we report that on Saturday, July 19, Southwestern Int l Raceway lost racer and friend Tony Brorsen. Tony was one of the original racers who helped establish SIR in August Not only was he a racer, but he also worked in several capacities at the track he was available to do whatever needed to be done. This was a family activity for Tony and his wife, Wendy, tower supervisor at SIR, and his daughter, Brittany, who worked at the E.T. booth. Tony won the SIR Street championship in 1999 and that year was the runnerup in Street at the Summit Racing Series Finals in Las Vegas. In this year s Summit Racing Series, Tony was in first place in Street at SIR. He was a tough competitor in any class and recently won his first Wally in Street July 5 at the National DRAGSTER Challenge at SIR.
