1 February 2018 President Tom Finch Vice President Steve Berguetski Sergeant at Arms Bob Halliday Treasurer Bob Knudsen RPM is a club created for the building and enjoyment of race car and sports car scale models February 17 RPM Meeting Daytona Racers There was a long discussion on how to handle the RPM facebook page in regards to allowing non members to join it was decided to allow non members, but ad admins to monitor it and make sure everyone was being appropriate. We had lots of stalled projects for the Torben Challenge! We also had many new guest /members, and many models on the table. March 17 RPM Meeting Rally Cars April 14 Milwaukee NNL April 21 RPM Meeting Auction We will be at the Edina Library for February s meeting! Address is: 5280 Grandview Square, Edina Hi everybody. I hope that you are all staying warm, and doing a lot of building through the middle of winter here. It has been a pretty productive one for me. January was a great meeting for us. We had quite a few new faces, which is always great to see. That is wonderful news, it means our club is vibrant and growing! One of the biggest meetings we have had in a while in terms of attendance, and that is awesome! We had a LOT of models on the tables for the weathered themed month. We also took a vote for the Torben challenge theme for this years club contest, and there were a lot of people who participated. Quite a few of us braved the elements, and headed down to Hope It Don't Snow show in Rochester on Feb 3rd. It was a great time as always. The Zumbro Valley Modelers put on a great show every year. It seemed like the other tables (armor, planes, etc.) were shrinking ever so slightly in terms of numbers. While the automotive tables which were dominated mainly by the modelers in this club were larger than I'd ever seen. The NASCAR hall of fame exhibit looked absolutely incredible, so thank you to Torben Rothgeb, Mark Egge, Clint Williams, and everyone who helped build for it. Hats off to you guys for being so prolific, and great builders. Quite a few RPM members were recognized for their achievements with awards as well. I was also able to finally secure and fill the display cabinet in the entryway to the Edina library last Sunday. I know it was difficult for most folks to get out, as the weather wasn't great, and it was Super bowl Sunday. Thank you to those that did brave the elements to get there, and put some models in there. Also thank you Mark Egge for getting the flyer done for the cabinet as well. Professional top job as always, it turned out great I think. This months meeting will be at Edina library on the 1:00 pm. The theme will be Indianapolis, and Rolex 24hrs. Hope to see everyone there! 2 On The Table. Welcome to the RPM January "On the Table" and we had a lot of models this month. It was "weathered" month and we also had a ton of 'just regular' cars. So...let's begin: -Erik Zabel gave us 3 cars, a '66' Vette, his '65' Mustang from the famous "Mustang challenge" and a proper weathered car, a Subaru WRC rally car. -Nick Amburgey had a bunch of cool stuff to show us this month, 5 to be exact. First off, a great version of the Tijuana Taxi done in his usual style. The "S'cool" bus was next, followed by a the "death rat" a work in progress. He also had a '57' Chevy wagon, and a '31' Ford done in Nick's characteristic patina. Bob Maderich Bob Maderich Bob Maderich -Bob Maderich had two Mitsubishi Rally cars for us this month. One was the Charisma, and the other was the Pajero from the '92' Paris-LeCap race. He also had a GAZ truck and a Model T ambulance in 1/35 scale. Now to top all this he had a 'covered wagon' in progress. (it's actually a 1/16 Stutz Bearcat) Tom Lisa Tom -New members Tom and Lisa, who we've all seen at the NNL for a few years shared some of their builds with us. Tom had two Jeep Honchos and a '67' Impala. Lisa gave us a Plymouth Superbird, and a '68' Dodge Dart. -Russ - Murray, who continues his "Big Red' quest, brought more parts and decals for this build. -Tyler Halliday gave us a '32' Ford roadster in progress and a completed 1/12 custom chopper. -Allan Hunter continued his run of trucks with his 1975 Diamond Reo rig.

3 more on the table! Paul Burpee Tom Finch -New member, Paul Burpee, graced us with a very weathered '58' Pontiac Bonneville -Prez, Tom Finch had two Yamaha YZR 500's. Lawson and Roberts were the riders on these bikes. -Clint Williams brought out his contribution from the '65' Mustang challenge, and a Mitsubishi SUV that he built from the Tamiya kit. -Mark Egge dropped a tasty little 1/43 version of Fernando Alonso's 2017 Indy car on the table, resplendent in McLaren orange -Jim Allen is on fire with the new NASCAR kits. His new one this month was the Jimmy Johnson Chevy, he also had one of the new Mobieus '65' Plymouths on display. -Scott Hervieux built the new Tamiya Mercedes AMG GT3 out of the box and of course, he said it was a pleasure. Looked great too. -Don Stauffer had 4 cars to contribute this month. The oldest was the 1908 Thomas Flyer that he built and weathered from the AMT kit. He also had a '65' Mustang from the club challenge, plus a Toyota Rally car and a Supermodified that he built using Scale Auto decals. -Dean Kuitunen opened up the cabinet and gave us 5 cars this month. A '50' Ford pickup, a '49'Mercury, a '68' Dodge Dart, a '78' Ford pickup (expertly weathered, BTW) and his tastiest creation, a '32'Ford rat rod. -Bill Johanneck flooded the table with 6 cars this month. They were a '49' Merc, a '57' Chevy, a '68' Dodge Dart, a '29' Ford Pickup (heavily modified), a Chevy ElCamino, and finally, a '67' Chevy Impala. Whew, that's a lot of models. Dan Gurney Death of a Racing Legend By Scott Harvieux (and as Ringo says, With a little help from my friends ) Daniel Sexton Gurney was born on April 13, 1931 in Port Jefferson, New York and began his racing career in Since he just passed away on January 14 th 2018, I thought I would take the time to write a little something about his auto racing career. What makes Gurney a legend is the fact that he has won races driving, managing, or owning a team in Formula One, Indy/C.A.R.T., NASCAR, Can AM, and the Trans AM series! Milestones by their own standards, but he is also the one who started the ritual of spraying champagne all over while celebrating on the podium after a race (1967 Le Mans with A.J. Foyt). (Kimi Raikkonen, of course, is the only one in Formula One who doesn t practice this ritual; he drinks his!) Some of his other milestones include being the first to put a simple right-angle extension on the upper trailing edge of the rear wing -- now referred to as the Gurney Flap. If well-designed, this device applies downforce for the corners with minimum aero-dynamic drag on the straights. Also, he was first in Grand Prix racing to wear a full face helmet (1968 German GP), and to this day he stands as the only American Driver to win an F1 race in an American built car, as well as the only driver to achieve the first wins for 3 different F1 teams! I had lunch today with Bob and he informed me that he and Mark met Gurney in 1998 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin during the C.A.R.T. race taking place there. Since that was the heyday of Target- Ganassi racing and drivers Alex Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser, most of the fans on Saturday's pit walk were flocked around the Ganassi team pit area. This allowed Mark and Bob to walk right up to the Toyota pit area where Gurney was working on a car (He was the Toyota team manager). Now this is where the story gets a little hazy. Mark says Bob was so happy he acted like a little giiiiiiiiiirl, and Bob says Mark was so crabby he punched a guy in the stomach for trying to butt in front of them to get Gurney to sign some 1/43 rd diecasts. My guess is the actual truth lies somewhere in between. The end result was that Mark took a picture of Bob with Gurney having his arm around him. That picture no longer exists because Bob lost it (that much I have no trouble believing!). At any rate, Gurney was very polite and congenial, and looked very good for a man in his 60s (at that time).

5 Deep Thoughts by Scott Harviuex.. The race on Sunday was entertaining and our boys got to see Team Kool Greens Dario Franchetti get his first C.A.R.T. win! As far as model building goes, I have compiled a short list of the available scale models of his cars. If you re not a builder, there is a plethora of diecasts and slot cars (which I will ignore here, but you can look on Google--Stauffer use your Texas Instruments TI-99/4A.) Here is a list of Gurney cars starting with the most common (and therefore, the cheapest), and then working their way to the most expensive (Model Factory Hiro labels). Top Ten Excuses for RPM Members Not Finishing a Model 10 - My ratrod was eaten by a rat. 9 - My Eggplane got scrambled. 8 - Since I have been in the club 15 years and haven t finished a model yet, why start now? 7 - My duties as VP of RPM and deleting Muggsys posts keeps me waaaaay too busy. 6 - Have another photo shoot posing as the Pillsbury Doughboy. 5 - Busy giving the Heimlich Maneuver to all the Minnesota Vikings players. 4 - Still waiting for my Gravity paints. 3 - I am so cheap and funerals are so expensive I will never die.so what s the hurry? 2 - Got sick from drinking thinner thinking I would lose weight. And the number one reason for RPM modelers not to finish a model. 1 - Got in waaaay over my head building a scratch-built Big Red Camaro for someone else! That s it for now! See you on the 17 th!
