1 BULLETIN VOL. 44, ISSUE 5 A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE INDY CHAPTER OF THE STUDEBAKER DRIVERS CLUB, MAY, 2017 Let the Car Show Season Begin!!! The 2017 summer car show season has officially begun, at least according to Larry Hopkins. Larry began a 100 day countdown to car show season on his Facebook page by posting a picture of a car at a show or cruise in each day leading up to April 1st which was opening day at "The Suds" in Greenwood, a popular cruise in spot for many years. Every weekend Larry finds a car event to take his 62 Studebaker GT Hawk, 72 Mustang, or 47 DeSoto to. Many of us will be heading to South Bend for the SDC International Meet May 3-6th. The "Home Coming Meets" in South Bend are always the best attended with the most cars and we are lucky enough to be just a couple of hours away! Hope to see everyone there! Nancy Bacon President Indy Chapter SDC BRICKYARD The Studebaker Driver s Club Meeting April 22, 2017 Our club s Vice-President, Diane Elmore, began the meeting with a hearty thank you to Nick & Jo Shaw for organizing the meeting at Crawfordville s Creekside Inn and after-lunch tour of a local Military Museum. Diane then opened the meeting by stating that there would be no officer reports because our President, Secretary, Treasurer, Activities Chair and Newsletter Editor were not there. Andy Swartz then moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by many members. Meeting adjourned! Notes taken and recorded by: A. Stealthy Member (aka Diane Elmore) Museum owner Loni Ropkey (C) with hosts Nick and Jo Shaw 1

He s losing his lease and the car might have to go to the crusher! This car could be restored for a great source of rare trim parts. Contact me at if you re interested. Jim Roberts From Ted Andrews Eiteljorg Museum Dogs Faithful & True until August 6 th. The Studebaker Jr. wagon. Jim McDaniel Not directly Studebaker related but before autoracks, Studebakers were loaded this way in special "Automobile" boxcars that could be loaded from the ends or via the side doors. There were other boxcars that you loaded from the double doors on the sides like this pic. 3
4 Front Wheel Bearings By Malcolm Berry Periodically, the front wheel bearings should be repacked. How often depends on how much your car or truck is driven. Under regular use, every 10 or 15 thousand miles would be acceptable. Since most Studebakers may not be driven on a regular basis, they should be repacked on a time schedule. If your vehicle s front wheel bearings haven t been repacked for some time, it should be done. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY ITEM! To do this, remove the front wheels, dust covers and cotter pins. Then remove the nut holding the hub on. Next, remove the hub and drum assembly. Remember if your car has disc brakes, the caliper must be removed first. When the hub is off, remove the grease seal and bearings. Clean the inner and outer bearings and inspect them for any type of damage. If the bearings are ok, repack them with clean wheel bearing grease. Next reinstall the bearings, hub and drum assembly. BE SURE TO USE A NEW GREASE SEAL. If there is any question about the old bearings, it s best to replace them. While you have the front hubs off, this is a good time to inspect brake linings, wheel cylinders and rubber brake hoses. If anything looks questionable, it should be replaced. DON T FORGET! Anytime you have the car jacked up for any reason, be sure to use good quality jack stands for SAFETY! If there are any questions, this is covered in the Studebaker Shop Manuel. Spread the Word for Studebaker Specialty Plates Mike, I am working the Studebaker National Museum to get a specialty plate for the museum. We need to get 500 signatures or more from people who are willing to purchase a plate. Can you pass this petition to Indiana members and see if we can get them back during the Nationals. William A. Panzica, RPA, FMA Please spread the word through the AOAI Indiana Chapter, SDC Indy Chapter, and SDC Michiana Chapter membership list and newsletters. You can sign the petition during the 2017 South Bend meet in the Inn at St. Mary's AOAI Hospitality room or Studebaker National Museum or print, sign and mail it directly to the Studebaker National Museum. Mike Baker A copy of the petition is on the next page. Mosquito Yard Spray From Paul Harvey Radio Show Copy and pasted from a friend: Big bottle blue cheap mouthwash, 3 cups Epsom salt, 3 stale 12 oz cheap beer, mix those three ingredients together until salt is dissolved. Spray anywhere you sit outside, around pools, will not harm plants or flowers. Mosquitoes gone from that area for approximately 80 days. Mosquitoes and bugs hate it, nice mint smell. On a personal note: Did this for the first time last year and it worked! I sprayed it on everything trees, flowers, brick, pillars, rocks, bottom side of furniture, except fabric. Will be using this spray again this year. Becky 4
