The Counts Streetin News Inc. IN THIS ISSUE NEW Officers and Committee Chairman on back page National Street Rod Assn. Charter Club since 1975 The COUNTS are in their 59th.year Fun With Cars Since V O L U M E I S S U E 4 F A L L NEW Prez SEZ Editorially Speaking with JIM GARAGE TOURS, Explosive Hydrographics, & PRUGH DESIGNS COMING EVENTS It s indoor activity time, AWA RDS BANQUET, Nov. 19, COUNTS CHRISTMAS PARTY Dec. 18th. and COUNTS CAR SHOW Feb. 17, 18 & 19th Cruiser CAR SHOW was rescheduled for Oct. 16 COVERAGE. HI TO ALL, I AM BAAAAAAAACK THANKS TO ALL OF THOSE THAT VOTED FOR ME AGAIN ALL 2 OF YOU. THANKS TO TOM FOR A GREAT JOB THAT HE DID AND WE WILL MISS HIS WIFE'S COOKIES!!!!!! I WANT TO MOVE AHEAD ON PLANS TO HELP THE CLUB MOVE FORWARD AGAIN. I WOULD LIKE TO DO A MEMBER- SHIP CAMPAIGN TO GET NEW AND YOUNG MEMBERS IN- VOLVED IN OUR CLUB, AND WOULD ALSO LIKE TO TALK ABOUT LETTING MEMBERS PUT THERE CARS IN THE SHOW. I THINK WE HAVE A LOT OF GREAT CAR GUYS NOT JOINING OUR CLUB BECAUSE THEY WANT TO PUT THERE CAR IN THE SHOW. I WOULD AL- SO LIKE TO GET OUR ROD RUN OUT OF THE RED AND HOPEFULLY WORK ON SOME NUMBERS THERE. WE NEED TO START WORKING ON PLANS FOR OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT IN OCTOBER OF 2017! WE ALSO NEED TO FIND SOMEONE TO HELP JIM WITH THE NEWSLETTER, MER- CHANDISE,ETC. HE HAS DONE SUCH A GREAT JOB WE NEED TO GET HIM HELP BEFORE HE BURNS OUT. LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR AWARDS BANQUET AND HOLIDAY PARTY DRIVE EM.LATER MAN COUNTS PRESIDENT, LYNN DELAMETER KOOL DEADWOOD NITES story AWARDS BANQUET story and photos One thing I have liked and been surprised by with the car club is the amount of money it donates to charities and causes. As with most organizations some put in more time than others generating the charitable donations. I guess its normal. And that group of volunteers should be heard when it comes time to disbursing funds. I believe it should be a community event, but none the less inevitably some members will have more input than others. One thing that disappoints me, and the only knock I can see with the decisions on how funds are disbursed, is that more money seems to go to causes than people. That seems odd to say. Some might argue that donating to causes is what the charitable giving should be all about. I m not so sure. I have always been a fan of supporting people not causes. I've never liked being a crusader. On the other hand some might disagree. And that s good. Reasonable people can disagree. Hopefully we will have a full house with lots of opinions when it comes time to fund our Sect. charities. Bob Dunfee, This club isprez, fortunate Chadto Raterman have the resources to support a lot of interests and those that receive that donation are indeed fortunate. I vote to give priority to people after reasonable V. Prez. discussion. Glen Shield, Go Counts!! Treas. Bob PastDiekmann Pres, Tom

GET YOUR STREET ROD OR MACHINE FEATURED IN THE CIOUNTS NEWSLETTER JIM SOME PHOTOS FINISHED OR UNFINISHED AND A STORY! studeman40@hotmail.com THIS STORY WASN T COMPLETE IN THE LAST NEWSLETTER BLU SHUZ It seems only natural that we feature the BIG WINNER at the Counts 48th. Annual Rod Run. Ron Meis is no stranger to the Counts events and has participated as an Associate Member for several years. He lives in Lead, SD 6 months out of the year and lives in Arizona in the winter. Over the past several years Ron has been having Kin Digit build some fantastic cars for him. This 1959 Buick Invicta hardtop is the last one he has finished for Ron. It has won many awards at the Goodguys events as well as cleaning house at this years Black Hills Rod Run. It was built to driveowered by a LSX engine made to look like a Nailhead Buick V8 Ron tells about the mods on 59 BLU SHUZ \Buick Invicta. The Buick sets and looks right from all angles Those wide whites are part of custom wheel with low profile tires, and it runs the wheels off most cars in comfort too! Custom yet seemingly original Custom taillights are cool too! Remember those stock 59 Buick Grills? Not quite stock Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016 PAGE 2

- - - This has to have been the weirdest part of the summer that I have ever experienced. This is referring to what took place with our Trusty (used to be) 40,Studebaker street rod. After 6 weeks of testing, replacing and scratching our heads to diagnose a serious backfire on the passenger bank of the LT1 V8 that has powered the car for 65,000 miles. The final cure was that 2 spark plug wires, 6 and 8, were reversed. This was done by one of 2 professional shops that installed headers and modified the exhaust system. Thanks to Denny Henrickson and some water he sprayed on cold headers the problem was figured out. Back on the road again! I have been to several one day outdoor car shows during August, September, and October and got quite a few pictures from these events. Now what I would like from you fellow club members that attended some shows this summer to write up your experience of the show or shows you attended. It s a little one sided when it s all my thoughts on all the shows. It s not hard and if you want I can edit what you write so that s not a problem. This includes the Awards Banquet in November, the Christmas Party in December and the Counts Car Show in February. Pictures would be appreciated also. Garage tours need to be covered also! Speaking of Garage tours, we have been fortunate to attend several shop tours and get a demonstration of what s new out there for the car or bike enthusiast to use and apply to their own project or driver! Check out some of the garage tour articles in this issue. Another unbelievable tour was on Saturday October 1st. when we had about 30 Counts, spouses and friends take a tour through A & A antique auto museum. The Gorman family has accumulated hundreds of cars, motorcycles and lots of misc. automotive related memorabilia and only offer it to be seen by invitation. The quality of these vehicles and almost all are running and driven often enough to maintain their battery and fluid systems. We may be doing another tour this year for those that missed this one. Call Jim if you want to be put on the list or me at studeman40@hotmail.com. to Check out our entire website This years AWARDS BANQUET featured some really nice hand made wooden plaques with pictures of all the winners cars on a beautiful red cedar with wood burned lettering and Counts logos. This was done by our friend, Jimbo Buck and was well received by all the winners. The awards banquet was a rousing success wit 53 members and guests present and taking part in the food and festivities. Two members were presented with lifetime memberships with over 25 years of dedicated membership each in the Counts. As always it has always been a privilege belong to such a dedicated group of friendly people and I'm glad to have been in the club for over 58 years!!!! Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016, PAGE 3

This years Kool Deadwood Nites was once again a big event. The only drawback was the car auction held at the Deadwood Mountain Grand casino ballroom. The sound was atrocious according to some members attending and the sales were only about 40%. Some said it was too high of reserves but who knows! The cars seen at the Saturday judging down at the fairgrounds were outstanding.. Ron Meis from Lead was the big winner with his fantastic 1959 Buick Invicta custom built by Kindig-it in Salt Lake city. Here are a few of the cars I saw at the fairgrounds. JN Nice Pontiac GTO Cool 60 s Corvette Congratulations to the Committee's Choice Winner (Best of Show) for Ron Meis of Lead, South Dakota with his 1959 Buick Invicta! Neat late 40 s Ford pickup Another nice 60 s Vette Neat 40 Ford sdn Don Oskey s 33 Very nice 1940 Ford pickup Wild green 60 Chevy Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016, Page 4

Name: Bob Grantz Spouse: Judy Joined Club: Dec 2015 Current Project: 1960 Corvette FEATURE MEMBER..BOB GRANTZ and his 1960 CHEVROLET CORVETTE My brother, Jim, bought this car in 1970 while in the USAF in CA. I was in college at the time & never knew much about the car s history. I do know that after his tour of duty he brought the car home and he and my dad did a minor overhaul on the engine and painted the car. Jim only drove the car until 1976 and then parked it in our back yard in Winner, SD. Many years later after all the other Grantz s were deceased, I brought the car home to Rapid City in We had moved to Rapid City in And the car sat at my place until last year I finally committed to get going on restoring it with some financial assistance from my son Steve. So, it was driven for 6 years and sat deteriorating for 39 years. I had always wanted to restore it to honor my brother, but just couldn t get around to it. Perhaps Steve will keep it and enjoy it for the next 45 years and even have an appreciating asset. So, I joined the Counts Car Club in Nov 2015 hoping to find some support and encouragement. It has been a very good experience for me. I should have joined many years earlier. Current status of the project: The body is in primer and is sitting on a rack while I complete the chassis restoration. The chassis and most of the pieces were sandblasted & powder coated. The chassis is mostly put back together. I am looking forward to setting the engine and transmission in and starting it up. After all the work I have done, I think I understand why it was parked in I think it was just worn out. Virtually every part that could wear out has had to be replaced. When completed it should be very close to a brand new 1960 Corvette. I just hope everything works properly. Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016, Page 5

This year Counts Club member, Mike Priois, let the Custer County Fair Board run the Sunday car show. Mike had set up a great show last year with over 100 cars for the first year, It was a no charge show and the fair board decided to charge $5 this year to help cover expenses. It turned out that they drew 78 cars and pickups. Not too bad for a group of cowboys that don t have a clue about the difference between street rods, street machines or classic cars. They set up a decade division for awards and several of the fair board judged the cars in each decade. I think a better idea will be used next year with spectators being the judges. Our own Don Oskey managed to get the Fair Board Presidents pick. At least he has good taste., There were lot s of new car and trucks on the grounds this year and that always interests the spectators! Good fair food too and a hearty thanks for coming from the locals too! JN Unique wooden car and bicycle Winner was this cool Dodge PU Very nice Mopar hardtop Ralph Allen won the 50 s division NSRA rep Lonnie had his chopped 40 New paint for an old classic Gary Mahan had his Big Block A Nice GTO convertible Another nice black 68 Charger Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016, Page 6

The Counts were invited to a shop tour of Explosive Hydrographics opened and run by Tony Zacher. This shop is located behind Taco Bell on E. North St. on East Watertown St. This shop uses water as a medium to coat almost any item they can put in their 3 x 8 ft. vat. The finishes are limited only to what Tony can get out of his catalog. After the base coat is applied the desired coating is applied in the hot water vat ad then left to dry overnight when a clear coat finish is applied over the entire item. This sets up and it s ready to install. Many woodgrain finishes are available and I can see dashes and window frames looking cool done this way! Check it out at Tony shows the material & pattern and nifb your item fits in 8 ft x 3 ft vat in can be covered in hundreds of possible patterns or colors Ple These are samples of items that can be covered Counts Streetin News, FALL 2016, Page 7
