2 If you have any questions on these positions, please contact your Unit s Commissioner or the Council Office. Scouter Reserves There are three underutilized positions that can help Units register adults when it comes to re-chartering in All three positions only require a criminal background check and completion of Youth Protection Training. Youth that are away at College, unable to be active with the Unit and/or complete training, the Unit College Scouter Reserve (Position Code: 92U) has been created for Scouters 18 years old and older who are in Troops. Venturing Crews, Venturing College Scouter Reserve (Position Code: 92V) has been created for Scouters in Crews 21 years old and older and members of Crews. This is a change from the previous College Scouter Reserve, which was not a Unit Level Position. For Scout Parents or other supportive adults who have no immediate and specific leadership role, the Unit Scouter Reserve (Position Code 91U) has been created. When a leader is registered in one of these capacities, they do not count against the Direct Contact Leader Trained Percentages, which helps your Unit s Journey to Excellence Points. It also helps Scouters who are away at College or are in a support role in a Unit maintain their continuous registration and BSA Insurance. 15 Scouts and Scouters... Don't Miss The Upcoming FCC Amateur Radio Technician License Exam Preparation Course! When disaster strikes, amateur radio operators keep the connection open. When large public events occur requiring coordinated communications, amateur radio operators provide this vital public service. When hikers and campers are separated by miles in a wilderness area [where there's no cell phone service] amateur radios maintain communications. Are you interested in becoming an amateur radio operator? The first step is to prepare for and pass the FCC license exam. Amateur radio operators come from all walks of life. They are people of all ages, income levels, and nationalities. They speak to the world in many languages and many ways. But whether they prefer talking into a microphone, interfacing their radios to a tablet and typing messages, or sending Morse code by hand, they all have an interest in what s happening in the world around them, and they use radio to reach out and communicate. The Raleigh Amateur Radio Society (RARS.org) is conducting a license prep course beginning January 16, 2016 in the Raleigh area. The Technician class license is entry level. The course does not require advanced math or knowledge in electronics. It is recommended that Scouts be 13 years of age or older. There is a required text, which must be purchased separately. This course will be offered in four parts that span four consecutive Saturday mornings. For more information or to register, contact the RARS Education Director at Education@RARS.org. 31 WHAT IS NYLT? National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), is an intense, 6 day, outpost adventure outdoor leadership training experience for youth troop leaders. The course goal is to prepare young men to become superior leaders in their units, their district and other organizations they belong to now and in the future. Participants learn to use cur-rent corporate leadership skills within the framework of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. BSA National carefully developed the NYLT curriculum with input from current corporate trainers, the U.S. Air Force Academy and others in the training community. Graduates of this program become Senior Patrol Leaders in their Troops as well as leaders in their Districts, Schools, Churches, and Communities. The course is led and taught by some of the best youth leaders in the Grand Canyon Council; all of whom are graduates of the NYLT program and many have staffed multiple courses. The Council uses NYLT as a comprehensive youth leadership training program that is in support of the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to pre-pare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Each Course Director and their staff support this by attempting to prepare each youth to become a responsible, participating citizen and youth leader in their unit who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law. REQUIREMENTS Scout participant must be at least 13 years of age and a First Class Scout by the start of the course with the Scoutmaster s signature of approval. Current BSA medical form for each scout and leader (less than a year old). Items from the equipment list that each scout will bring to camp.* Resource Questionnaire* Attend an orientation meeting prior to the course* * Can be found at Occoneechee Scout Sign January 2016 Vol. 12 #01 31

32 LEADERSHIP SKILLS The primary goal of NYLT is to develop Scouts as leaders. To be a good leader requires the knowledge and the ability to use the right tools. At NYLT, we teach the Scouts the skills necessary to manage group dynamics and performance. These are the same skills taught at Fortune 500 companies. The Scouts not only learn about these skills, they are placed as leaders within patrols. Here they practice these leadership skills under the guidance of an experienced staff. These leadership skills include: Communicating well Effective Teaching Finding Your Vision Resolving Conflict Setting Goals Ethical Decisions Preparing Plans Leading Yourself Developing Teams Valuing People Solving Problems SCOUTCRAFT & OUTDOOR SKILLS Scouts will learn about low impact camping, out-door cooking, geocaching and many other out-door skills. In addition, Scouts will be taught how to apply these skills in their home units. Occoneechee Scout Sign January 2016 Vol. 12 #01 32

33 MODEL TROOP Youth leaders will become a part of a Model Troop. They will be assigned to patrols based on their age and size. Patrols will be composed of Scouts from troops throughout the Council. A patrol will have no more than one Scout from a given home troop. The patrols will cook, eat, sleep, and train together. Together they will take part in many activities including an outpost hike and campout. The patrols will take turns as the Service and Program Patrol. Participants will take turns serving as Patrol Leader and participating in a daily Patrol Leader s Council. A QUALITY STAFF A trained youth staff member is assigned to work with each patrol throughout the week. This Troop Guide is responsible for training the participants. Youth staff members are supported by trained adult leaders, who report Occoneechee Scout Sign January 2016 Vol. 12 #01 33

35 S Wood Badge is a hands-on leadership skills experience offered to adult volunteers of the Boy Scouts of America. Encompassing two three-day weekends, the course allows Scouters of all backgrounds to come together at camp to extend their understanding of the youth they lead, the adults they work with, and to go to new levels of personal growth and learning. Many describe this course as their mountaintop experience in Scouting the most fun they ve ever had as an adult Scouter. What past attendees have said about Wood Badge: At last a training that teaches skills I can use immediately in my troop and even at work -Scoutmaster, Baden Powell District I thought Wood Badge was for Scoutmasters. Little did I know how much I could learn, or how much I could grow as a person and as a female leader, through Wood Badge. There are so many ways I can help in Scouting, and now I feel empowered to do it! -Pack Training Chair, Crosswinds District Great Boy Scouts earn their Eagle. Great Boy Scout leaders earn their Wood Badge beads. -Troop Committee Member, Three Rivers District I felt like I was a scout, learning and having fun at camp. What an awesome experience. -Assistant Scoutmaster, Cape Fear District If you can handle a crew of Scouts in the woods, you can handle Wood Badge. It's the best self-challenge experience there is. -Crew Advisor, Tuocs District S Occoneechee Scout Sign January 2016 Vol. 12 #01 35

42 2015 NORTHERN TIER INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM APPLICATION Step 5: Medical - All Participants must submit a current BSA Health and Medical Record including parts A, B, C & D upon arrival. Northern Tier Weight Limits for Canoeing: No participant in a Northern Tier expedition should exceed the maximum acceptable weight listed for their height in the table shown here. Those who fall within the recommended weight limits are much more likely to have an enjoyable trek and avoid incurring injuries and health risks. Extra weight puts strain on the back, joints and feet. The portage trails can be very muddy, slippery and rocky and present a potential for tripping and falling. We also strongly recommend that no participant be less than 100 lbs. in weight. Extremely small participants will have a very difficult time carrying canoes and heavy packs. The load limit of canoes is another important reason to limit participant weight. We put 3 people per canoe. The total participant load per canoe must not exceed 600 lbs. (200 lbs. per participant). No participant may exceed 295 lbs. Weight-to-Height Table Northern Tier National High Adventure Programs Height Recommended Weight (pounds) Maximum Weight (pounds) Minimum Allowed Weight ***Participants weighing less than 100 pounds will have a very 100 pounds difficult time and are discouraged from attending Maximum Allowed Weight ***No participants weighing more than 295 pounds will be 295 pounds allowed to participate.
