1 Welcome to the Brooklyn Council 2017 Camp O Ree You are invited to participate in the Brooklyn Council s Camp O Ree in Camp Pouch. Whether you are attending as a new scout on the trail to Eagle, or an experienced Scout looking to share your knowledge and leadership to others; please help us in providing cheerful service, outstanding leadership, and FUN! ********************************************************* Please read this entire Handbook, it will explain the rules and logistics for this year s CampORee. ********************************************************** The most prepared troops and crews at this fall s camp o ree will have thoroughly read and attained a complete understanding of all the information covered in this handbook. This camp o ree is primarily an activity to enhance the skills of your Troop. It is also a chance for your scouts to show off their skills. The purpose of this event is for the scouts to learn and succeed at Basic Scout Skills. It should be noted that there will be two Cracker Barrels. One held with just Scoutmasters and SPLs Friday Evening and the other held on Saturday evening. We will need adult assistance throughout the day, so we are asking for a minimum of 1 volunteer per unit to help with the day s events. If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact the following people: Event Chair Tom Kramer Kramertower@msn.com Leah Scott Leah.scott0212@gmail.com Staff Advisor Jeffrey Tejada jeffrey.tejada@scouting.org
2 CAMP O REE GENERAL INFORMATION Check In: Check in is from 7:00 9:00pm on Friday night. Please do not show up any earlier than 7pm unless you are on staff for the weekend. This allows the staff a chance to prepare everything before check in begins without interruption. Scoutmasters will need to check their Troops in immediately upon arrival at camp. Each Troop will need to present a roster of who is in camp for this weekend at check in. It is imperative that each Troop arrives together. Immediately after check in, the staff will hold a cracker barrel for the SPLs and the Scoutmasters to cover the events of the weekend by the Pavilion. Camporee Fees: Fees will be $15 per person (scouts, leaders and adults that attend) which includes the cost of the campsite on the main field. If troops wish to camp in cabin or campsite off the main field they must book their own sites through the GNYC Tent a Roo website or contact short term camping. Please be advised the numbers you provide for this event you will have to pay for. These numbers will be used in ordering food for the Cracker Barrel being held on Saturday with everyone. 5 Events Being Held in the Afternoon Patrol must carry the Point Sheet with them the entire afternoon. The sheets are to be submitted to Activity Chair by 6PM Saturday Evening Shooting Events Archery: All scouts will have one practice end followed by two ends of 7 arrows. Each scout will be scored, as well as the entire patrol String Burning Patrols must provide their own fire starting equipment other than matches or lighters. For example, batteries, wires and steel wool, flint and steel, laundry lint etc. The patrol must build and sustain fire while burning string. This is a timed event: 15 minutes Frisbee Golf Just like playing golf, but with a Frisbee. Throw a Frisbee at a target, you score points by completing the course. If the course cannot be completed in the time limit points will be given based amount of holes completed, counting how many throws it takes to get the Frisbee in the target. You will have no more than 15 minutes for the entire patrol to complete a 4-hole game. Log Pull Relay Patrol is split in half. One half on one side, the other half on the opposite side. The first scout ties a piece of rope to a log and pulls the log to the other end tagging the first scout in line. The next scout then pulls the log back to the other side. You keep going until each scout has pulled the log to the other side. The knot must stay intact on the log. If the rope comes off the entire patrol will start again. This is a time event: 10 minutes. Plank Games Patrol limes up single file behind the Patrol leader. The patrol passes up the first 2 pieces of 2x4 to the Patrol Leader, who places them on the ground and walks over them. The second set is passed up to the Patrol Leader and he places them on the ground in front of him and again continues forward. The next scout in line walks forward over the newly vacated planks. Another set of planks is passed up to the Patrol Leader, who places them down, walks forward and then next scout walks over the newly vacated planks. This continues until the entire patrol has crossed a distance of 15 feet. If a scout falls, the entire patrol must start over. This is a time event: 15 mins Knots The entire patrols will need to complete all knot tasking requirements: Overhand, square knot, clove hitch, 2-half hitches, taut-line hitch, and bowline. Assistance from others within patrol can only be done verbally. Each scout must complete the knot before moving on to the next. Point will only be given to a patrol who is able to have all scouts complete all 6 knots. This is a timed event: Complete 6 knots in 15 mins. WHERE'S THE WHISTLE? Game which can be played in an open field where there is no cover. All Scouts in the patrol are blindfolded and placed in a line at one end of the field. Each blindfolded Scout spins around once. Then the Patrol leader goes to the other end, and blows his whistle. The object of the blindfolded Scouts is to reach the whistle-blower and touch him. The Patrol Leader(whistle blower) may stoop down, but be must
6 not move around As soon as a Scout touches the person with the whistle, he slips off his blindfold and is out of the game. The whistle-blower should see that no boys run into hedges or ditches; if he notices any of them straying, he must blow his whistle and so attract their attention in the right direction. Points are awarded based the amount of time it takes the whole Patrol to touch the Patrol Leader (whistle blower) This timed event: each Scout in the Patrol must touch the whistle blower within 15 mins. Note: Any Scout whose blindfold slips or is taken off the whole must start again Commonly Asked Questions If you ve never been to a Camp-o-ree, this summary will be useful to you. New campers are certainly welcome! We re glad you re considering coming to the 2017 Brooklyn Council Campo-ree! What is a Camp-o-ree? A Camp-o-ree is a camping event with youth from many Troops. Each youth camps with its Troop and participates in the day s events based on the units experience level, but joins together for flag ceremonies and campfire. What is a Cracker Barrel? The Cracker Barrel is a meeting of the leaders from each Troop especially Scoutmasters and Senior Patrol Leaders--that is held the Friday evening of Camp-o-ree. Updated Camp-o-ree information and questions will be answered. Please share this information with your unit. What is going on? Saturday is being split between two session. The morning session will be dedicated to Merit Badges. It is not guaranteed that the Merit Badge will be completed on that day. A good start is to ensure the pre-reqs are completed ahead of time. The afternoon session will be dedicated to Patrol Events. Bringing cohesion to work as a group and sharpen up a scout s skill. Points will be passed on how quickly and efficiently as a patrol. When do we check in? Check in is Friday night between 7:15 and 9:00 PM or Saturday morning until 8:00 am. Do we have to camp? No. We recommend that boys camp at least one night to learn about scout camping, but it is not required. The fee however is the same for all participants. It should be noted that any units that wish to leave Saturday night may do so, but please notify the event coordinators ahead of time so that we can check out your unit. Please note, if your unit chooses to reserve their own campsite, separate from the sites set aside for the camp-o-ree, the fee for the site will be the responsibility of the unit, and the camp-o-ree fee remains the same. How do we handle food? Each Unit brings its own food. There will be two CrackerBarrels held. One on Friday for the Scoutmaster and SPLs. The second held with the entire camp. There will be a camp fire and awards will be distributed to first, second and third place winners for each event held in the afternoon.
