2 Please note that we are guests at Carter Park, and should leave the area cleaner than we found it. The fee is $6.00 per person. Practice Leave No Trace. Schedule of Events for Saturday January 28, :00 am Events start Sled judging 9:30 am Timed race ( one rider and others pulling ) Rotate to different event sites until it is time for lunch. There will be additional time in the afternoon to finish the events. 12:00 1:30 pm Lunch The O.A. chapter will be offering a lunch: 2 Hot Dogs, Chips, and a Drink for $5 or A bowl of Chili, Chips, and a Drink for $5 1:30 3:30 pm Afternoon Events 4:00 5:00 pm Campsite Inspection 5:30 pm Flag Lowering

3 6:00 7:45 pm Troop Dinner 8:00 pm Awards Campfire 10:00 pm Cracker Barrel 10:45 pm Lights out There will be a Dutch Oven Dessert Competition for Saturday Dinner. Please prepare the following: 1 Dutch Oven for dessert (at least 1 maybe 2 ) Prepare enough for your entire troop plus 3, so that we will be able to judge. Bring your sample to the administration Please label your dessert. We will be judging the desserts only. So do your best for our taste buds. The 10:00pm cracker barrel will be open to all troops. Please bring enough snacks and drinks for you troop so that we can share with other units.

5 9:00am Chapel Service 10:00am Check Out & Depart Klondike Derby Information Be respectful of Carter Park and other areas there. Garbage will be collected in campsite and packed out by the troop. Use the buddy system when possible. Do not play in or around the bolos. Fires in campsites are permitted. Try to use existing fire pits. Raised fire pits are encouraged. No cutting of live trees. The weather may be cold, so make sure you are properly dressed and equipped. Tour permits must be posted in campsite. First aid station will be at Admin. tent. Bring enough water for the weekend for your troop. The chapter will also have a trading post open at the derby.

6 Klondike Derby Sled Rules All natural materials (no manufactured lumber) No nails, screws, wire, nylon tie wraps, or duct tape. Lashing material may be rope, binder s twine, cord, (nylon cord is allowed). Glue is allowed. No plastic or metal allowed on the runners. Items listed below must be carried on sled for events. Lashings will be inspected for correctness and points may be deducted if they are not correct. Sleds need to be new for this derby. Existing sleds may be approved for use as long as the above rules are followed. List of materials to be on each sled: Patrol flag on a pole Compass 8x10 tarp Sheathed axe Matches 6 tent stakes or nails

7 6 pieces of 10 rope Bow saw Events First aid kit (2) 6 to 8 foot poles Fire Building Patrol will be given a piece of wood from which they will have to use their axe to prepare tinder, kindling, and wood for their fire. They will be able to use only two matches to light the fire and will be allowed to blow on the fire for 10 seconds. The judge will tell them to stop blowing and then the patrol will wait until a measured amount of water boils. This is a timed event. Shelter Erection The patrol will use their tarp, rope, and stakes to erect a shelter. After the erection, the entire patrol will get under the shelter which will stop the time. This is a timed event. Compass Basic compass skills will be required for this event (orient a map, take compass bearings, know map symbols, and know the length of your pace). Tomahawk Throwing Each patrol member will be allowed to throw a tomahawk 3 times at a target. Two (2) points will be awarded for sticking each tomahawk. Safety instructions will be given by the judge and must be followed to avoid disqualification.

8 The total number of points will be tallied for the patrol. Knot Relay The patrol will line up and when the judge tells them to start, they will run to the line and tie the knot that is given to them by the judge. The knots that will be tied are: square knot, bowline, twohalf hitches, taut line hitch, sheet bend, clove hitch, half hitch, and timber hitch. The knots will be judged on correctness and this will be a timed event. Log Saw When told to start by the judge, one patrol member will use their bow saw to saw through a log. This is a timed event. Lighting a Match with an Axe The patrol will line up and when the judge gives the signal one person will advance and have 3 attempts to light a wooden match with a hand axe. 8 patrol members will rotate through this event. If your patrol does not have 8 members, the scouts present must continue until 8 scouts rotate through the line. Safety instructions will be given by the judge and must be followed to prevent disqualification. Lashing This event involves lashing the patrol flag to another pole using two (2) shear lashes, then raising the pole followed by the patrol giving their

9 patrol yell. This is a timed event and timing will stop when the patrol yell is given. First Aid This event involves basic first aid skills. Each patrol member will be give an injury card and they will have to perform the required first aid for that injury. There will be a time limit for this event.
