Site #1 - Fire-building Objectives: A) To start a fire using the equipment /supplies provided by the district. (Each patrol will need to supply one hatchet and one or two pocketknives.) (no sheath knives allowed) B) Any scout using the hatchet or knives will be required to have their Totin Chip card with them. C) To heat cooking oil in a gallon can until it pops Five kernels of popcorn. The patrol must start a fire using the materials provided at the event site (Starter striker, 12 x 12 board and lint) plus the hatchet and knife they are carrying on the sled. Using the hatchet and knife carried by the patrol, the scouts must shave and split the wood as they deem appropriate.) Fuels, paper and matches of any type are strictly prohibited. A gallon can with 2 ounces of cooking oil and 2 ounces of popcorn kernels will be placed over the fire. Once the fire is started, the patrol must then build the fire and heat the cooking oil until it pops Five kernels of popcorn. (The district will provide the one-gallon can and equipment will be provided to place the can in the air prior to the building of the fire.) After the 25 minutes has expired or Five kernels has popped, the patrol must douse the fire and disperse its remains and remove the gallon can to the side (using proper handling techniques) before moving to the next activity site. Items needed: (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled) Pocketknife (for making wood shavings) Hatchet (for splitting wood to make fuel for fire) All other items will be provided at event site Bonus: 1/2 point for every minute under the 25-minute time limit. Deductions: 5 points for failure to complete objectives. 10 points for failure to douse and dispose of fire materials properly. 10 points if scoutmaster, adult or leader helps in any manner. Patrol will be disqualified for using anything other than the equipment and supplies provided by the district Site #2 Snow Shoe Races: Objectives: A) Travel the pre-established course B) Speed will be tracked and recorded Each patrol will provide one set of snowshoes that they will use in a relay race. After the first Scout finishes a lap, he will give the snowshoes to the second Scout who will put them on and complete a lap, etc. Time will be averaged based on the number of Scouts in a patrol. If a Troop has multiple patrols, the rotation can be arranged
to so the same snowshoes can be used for all patrols. Items Needed: One pair of home made snow shoes Bonus: 1/2 point for every second under the 25-minute time limit. Site #3 Orienteering Dog Sled Obstacle Course Objectives: A) To travel the pre-established course with the patrol s sled, with one scout as driver and the remaining scouts as the team of dogs. B) Following the established course, the scouts must determine and record the correct direction for each leg or section of the course. They must also, at certain points of the course determine the approximate height of a tree and the width of a river. With one scout acting as the driver and the other boys pulling the sled, the team must follow a set course, which will be pre-established. This provides consistency for all troops. At each turn of the course the driver and his team must determine and record what direction they are traveling for the next leg of the course. This must be recorded using the readings in degrees from a compass. Each patrol will also be required to determine the height of a tree and the width of a river. (They will be clearly marked) There will be two courses of similar distance and difficulty for troops to compete on when multiple patrols are participating in the event at that same time. Items Needed: Compass (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled.) Bonus: 1/2 point for every minute under the 25-minute time limit. 1 points for every five degrees variance from the correct compass reading (max of 15 points). 2 points for every five-foot variance in measuring the height of the tree. 2 points for every ten-foot variance in measuring the width of the stream. 5 points for failure to complete course.
Cumulative deductions not to exceed 25 points Site #4 Track Identification Objectives: A) Patrols must identify which animals made various tacks in the snow. B) Speed will be tracked and recorded Various animals tacks will be on display and the patrol will need to identify them correctly. Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Bonus: 1/2 point for every second under the 25-minute time limit. 3 points for each animal tack not properly identified. Site #5 Klondike Dog Sled Race Objectives: A) To pull/push the patrol s sled and travel the pre-established course B) Speed will be tracked and recorded Top speeds will determine final positioning. In keeping with the true Klondike tradition, this is an all out race, with the dogs (patrol members) pulling or pushing the patrol s sled with a full load. Items Needed: Sled - loaded. Bonus: 1/2 point for every second under the 25-minute time limit. 2 minutes added for each required item not on sled
Site #6 Log Hoist Objectives: A) Scouts demonstrate the skills required in knots. B) Speed will be tracked and recorded A scout will throw a 30 rope over a 7 crossbar 15 away secures the rope to an anchor with a clove hitch. Then run up and tie a timber hitch with a half hitch to a log. To complete the challenge, he moves to the part of the rope between the anchor and the upright structure, and ties a sheep shank to shorten the rope enough to suspend the log two feet above ground. Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Bonus: 1/2 point for every second under the 25-minute time limit. 2 minutes added for each wrong knot tied. Site #7 - Knot tying & use identification Objectives: A) To be able to correctly tie the 10 different knots in a sequential order so all ten knots are in use at the same time, while using only 5 ropes (and three poles/posts). B) To properly identify the purpose or function of each knot. Each patrol will be given 5 ropes and a crossbeam tied between two trees and using the five ropes tie all the
knots listed below, connecting all the ropes together in sequence (only two ends can be tied to the post using the below knots, all others must be used between those two posts.) All the knots can be found in the scout handbook except the Surgeon s Loop, which can be found in the Fishing merit badge book.) 1) Taut-line 2) Figure 8 3) Square knot 4) Sheepshank 5) Sheet-bend 6) Overhand 7) Bowline 8) Surgeon s Loop 9) Timber-hitch 10) Clove-hitch (Example: Tie rope A around a post using a Taut-line then tie Figure 8 in middle of rope A then connect rope A and rope B with a Square Knot then tie a Sheepshank in the middle of rope B then tie rope B to rope C using a Sheet-bend then tie an overhand knot in middle of rope C now connect rope C and rope D using a Bowline then tie the Surgeon s Loop in the middle of rope D then tie the end of rope D to post using Timber-hitch. Finally, using rope E, tie a Clove Hitch around the middle of rope D.) The second objective is to properly record the purpose or function of each of the ten knots. As an example, the Square knot is used for tying two ropes of same size together. Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Bonus: 1/2 point for every minute under the 25-minute time limit. 5 points for failure to complete objectives. 2 points for every knot tied incorrectly. 2 points for each knot function not properly identified. 5 points deducted if all ropes not tied together using all the knots (see example above). Site #8 Winter Rescue Objectives: A) The patrol need to rescue the three scouts. B) Speed will be tracked and recorded The situation is that there are three scouts that have fallen through the ice in a lake and are hanging on to the edge that is 20 foot away. You need to rescue one scout by throwing a line to the scout and pulling him back to shore, then rescue one scout by lashing together poles and pulling him back. The third scout you need to rescue by reaching out to him. Remember you need to have someone on shore and must be in connected with each other so that you may pull him back without endangering yourself. After this scout is rescued (pulled back to the line) he may help rescue the others. Only those on shore (behind the line) may pull the scouts back. Items Needed: Enthusiasm & teamwork & leadership Basic: Bonus: 25 points 1/2 point for every second under the 25-minute time limit.
Site #9 Lashings & A-frame Walk Objectives: A) To build an A-frame using shear and square lashings. B) To walk the A-frame a distance of 25 feet. Using two eight-foot and one six-foot log poles (or three eight-foot) build an A-frame with the top knot being a shear lashing and the bottom two knots being square lashings. After the A-frame is completed the patrol will then attach four ropes of about 20 feet to the top of the A-frame, using clove hitches (or two 40-foot ropes tied in the middle with a clove hitch). With the A-frame standing upright and balanced by four scouts pulling the ropes in four opposing directions (similar to the directions of a compass), one scout will stand on the cross member of the A-frame and hold onto the vertical poles. Then with the scouts pulling the attached ropes they must walk the A-frame a distance of 25 feet. After the 25-minute time limit has expired or the activity is completed, the patrol must disassemble the A-frame and return the poles and ropes to their sled before proceeding to the next event site. Items needed: (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled) 3 log poles (2 eight-foot long and 1 six-foot long log poles about 3 in diameter recommended) 3 Ropes for completing lashings on poles (15 ft. ropes recommended) 4 ropes of about 20 foot length to attach to A-frame for the walking activity. Bonus: 1/2 point for every minute under the 25-minute time limit. 5 points for failure to complete objectives. 2 points for every time the scout standing on the A-frame touches the ground during the walk. 2 points for improper usage or tying of knots or lashings. Site #10 Drop Zone Slingshot Objectives: A) Using a sling shot and a weighted bag (supplied by district), you must try to hit the drop zone target placed in the field at a distance of about 75 feet away from shooting position. The goal is teamwork and accuracy with a slingshot. There will be one slingshot and one bag for shooting the target. There must be no patrol members inside the drop zone range when the shot is released. There will be deductions if this occurs. Once the shot has landed, then a runner must run to the drop zone, retrieve the bag and run it back to the slingshot. Throwing of the bag is not allowed. Teamwork will count for bonus or penalty points. You will have 15 minutes to shoot as many shots as you can. Bonus points will be given for accuracy of hit to shots ratios.
Items Needed: Teamwork and excitement Basic: Bonus: 25 points for 15 or more shots launched 1 point for each Bulls-eye hit in the center of the drop zone target ½ point for each outer ring hit on the drop zone target 1 point for excellent teamwork 2 points if hit ratio is over 50% and 5 points if over 75% 5 points for each failure to complete an objective 1 to 3 points deducted for failure to work as a team. 1 point for each shot launched under 15 standard 1 point for each time a person fails to run the bag back to slingshot 1 point for each time a patrol member is inside the drop zone when a shot is released.
Site #11 Ravine Crossing Objectives: A) Beginning at starting point, race to ravine (30-40 ft), tie ropes to sled, raise and suspend sled, fully loaded with all required gear, from cable strung across a ravine (Cable is pre-strung at about ft across, 5-7 ft off ground at ends of cable higher in the middle). B) Transport sled, via cable, to other side of ravine. (you will need rope to pull sled across ravine) C) Remove sled from the cable, race uphill following a predetermined compass reading and distance, grab a gold nugget and then return to the cable, reattach the sled, return it across ravine, then disconnect and return sled to starting point. D) Do not drop or dump sled or its contents at any time during the event. E) ONLY ROPES CAN BE USED to suspend the sled from the cable AND CANNOT BE PRE- TIED OR ATTACHED TO THE SLED. They are to be tied to the sled at the time it reaches the ravine after leaving the starting point. The first objective is to determine how to raise and suspend sled from the cables hooks and pulleys using ropes, without dumping contents or the sled itself. Cables and pulleys supplied by district sled and rope supplied by patrol. The ropes cannot be pre tied or attached to the sled before the event starts. You cannot remove excess gear from sled. Other than the materials used for this event, all other items are to remain on the sled. All knots will be checked for accuracy. There is no one and only correct way to do this. It must, however, be organized and the knots (whichever chosen) must be tied correctly. The second objective is to pull the sled across the ravine using ropes without dumping contents or sled. The key here is to have more than one rope in use and to pull in unison. This requires teamwork. The third objective is to remove the sled from the cable and place it back on the ground. (Again, no dumping) After the 25 minutes has expired or the activity is completed, the patrol must clear their materials from the site and proceed to the next event site. Items needed: (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled) Dog Sled (loaded) and Rope (you can use the same ones from the A-frame walk) Bonus: 2 points for every three minutes under the 25-minute time limit. 2 points for incorrect tying of knots 5 points for each failure to complete an objective 1 point for each time gear falls from the sled Site #12 - First Aid Objectives: A) To properly treat a victim suffering from a compound fracture, shock, contusion and a concussion. B) Transfer the stabilized patient from accident site to dogsled (30 feet) using a stretcher made from poles and a blanket. C) Transport the patient, via dogsled, 50 feet to safety. One member of the patrol will act as the victim. The scenario is that a patrol member has fallen accidentally and suffered a compound fracture in the lower leg. When he fell he hit his head, causing a contusion and possible concussion, and he goes into shock. The remaining patrol members must then properly treat the patient s compound fracture (which is bleeding heavily), shock, the contusion and concussion. The victim will need to be evacuated from the accident site. Necessary supplies must come from either the sled or from the immediate surroundings of the accident site. After the 25 minutes has expired or the activity is completed, the patrol must disassemble the stretcher, treatments, etc. and return them to their original locations (sled or site) before proceeding to the next event location.
Items needed: (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled) 2 Poles (eight foot recommended) Ropes, splints, bandages and blankets (remember, you are treating a bleeding wound, shock, a contusion and a concussion and you need a stretcher) Bonus: 1/2 point for every minute under the 25-minute time limit. 5 points for failure to complete objectives. 2 points for each mistake in treatment of victim. a) treatment incorrect (or) b) failure to perform necessary service or function. Examples: Failure to stop bleeding. Dropping patient while transporting. Improper usage or tying of knot.
Check List of Items Needed for Klondike Derby 1) Dog Sled with ropes/harnesses for scouts to pull the sled. (No wheels allowed) Sample sled plans: ) All items listed below must be carried on Sled. Items needed by event: (To be supplied by patrol and carried on Klondike Sled) Site #1 - Fire-building Items needed: Hatchet & Pocketknife (no sheath knives allowed) Site #2 Snow Shoe Races Items Needed: One pair of home made snow shoes Site #3 Orienteering Dog Sled Obstacle Course Items Needed: Compass Site #4 Track Identification Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Site #5 Klondike Sled Race Items needed: Bring the sled fully loaded Site #6 Log Hoist Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Site #7 - Knot tying and use identification Items Needed: Enthusiasm & knowledge Site #8 Winter Rescue Items Needed: Enthusiasm & teamwork & leadership Site #9 Lashings & A-frame Walk Items needed: 3 log poles (2 eight-foot long and 1 six-foot long about 3 in diameter recommended) 3 Ropes for completing lashings on poles (15-20 ft. ropes recommended) 4 ropes of about 20 foot length to attach to A-frame for the walking activity.
