1 2018 Wakpominee District Klondike Derby Camp Wakpominee The Wakpominee Chapter of the Order of the Arrow is Sponsoring the Derby this year Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27 There will be an opportunity to stay at camp Friday Night in lean-to s in Mohican, Algonquin and Tahawus at no charge. You do need to register with George Casey to reserve lean-to s (please note that multiple units will occupy the same site if there is space). If you are staying at camp Friday night you can pay an additional $5.00 per person for a Cracker Barrel Friday Night and Hot Breakfast Saturday morning. You must let us know how many participants are coming for Friday Night by the close of early registration Sunday January 21 st. To register for staying over on Friday you must George Casey at gcasey1@nycap.rr.com or call to register. Payment for this will be made when you check in on Friday January 27 (Cash or check made out to OA Twin Rivers Council ). Your normal registration fee should be completed at the on-line registration You may also rent a cabin for the weekend from the Council at the prevailing rate Subject to Availbility Saturday we will run from 8:30 AM to 3 PM with a break for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30. If your troop is coming for the day only (Saturday January 28 th ) Please arrive by 8:30 AM for check-in. Saturday morning parking in the upper camp area will be limited so be prepared to park in the lower lots and walk up the hill. You may drive one vehicle up with your sled(s) and supplies. All participants must have a current medical form (Parts A and B) to be turned in at check-in. The cost is $12.00 which will include Hot Coco, (Coffee for adults) and Bug Juice. Lunch will be a turkey noodle and vegetable soup, tomato soup and grilled cheese with and without ham. Each participant will receive the patch for the event and each Troop will receive the participation ribbon. There will be first second and third place awards for each event as well as an overall Klondike winner. On-line registration is open at Regular registration ($12.00) ends on Friday January 19 st at 11:59 PM Late registration ($17.00) applies from Saturday January 20 th at 00:00 AM to Thursday January 25 th Pre-registration is a must to help in the planning process for food.

2 The Patrol Method should be employed at all times throughout the event. Each patrol will be required to plan appropriately and to bring the required gear for navigating to the Klondike outposts located along the field course and for participating activity challenge. Using this Event Guide, and with a good knowledge of the Scout Handbook, The Scout Field Book, the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook and the Patrol Leader Handbook, a patrol will be able to do very well in preparing for and competing in the Klondike derby. The Scout Oath and Law will be the governing rules for the event. Staff will inspect all Scouts for appropriate cold weather clothing and proper foot wear. Please see the proper outdoor gear section discussed later in this event guide. A bonus of 5 points will be awarded to each patrol having all members properly clothed and prepared for the cold weather and 5 points for having the required gear on the sled and properly secured (total potential bonus is 10 points for the overall event award). The best protection in winter weather is common sense. Scouts should be instructed to dress in layers. Avoid working up a sweat, and keep themselves comfortable by removing or adding layers of clothing as needed. Avoid cotton clothing. Blue Jeans or cotton sweat pants should not be worn on the Klondike Trail. Wool, silk and polypropylene are the better materials for winter camping. Scouts should wear thermal underwear. A wind breaking, water resistant outside layer is suggested. Sled Rules No commercially manufactured sleds are permitted. This means that items such as plastic sleds, wheelbarrows or commercially manufactured wagons will not be allowed to compete. Sleds should be fashioned to look like an Alaskan dog sled. This rule will be liberally construed. A harness for pulling the sled should be attached to the front of the sled. Ideally, loops should extend from a single main trunk rope. The sled may be constructed of any materials (wood, PVC, fiberglass, aluminum, etc.). Wheels are allowed if the patrol feels that it is necessary.

3 KLONDIKE DERBY STATIONS 00. INSPECTION Sled and equipment inspection. Each Sled will have the following: 1 Blanket (capable of being used in fashioning a stretcher) 3 Triangular bandages for splints and bandages 1 First Aid Kit (compliant with tenderfoot requirement 4d) 1 Gallon of Water 1 Trash bag 1 Boy Scout Hand Book 1 pencil and notebook 1 Patrol Flag 1 or all listed, flint and steel, hot spark or friction fire starter (fire piston or Bow and Drill), Char Cloth Tinder, kindling and fuel to make 2 small (LNT) fires 2 poles (capable of being used in fashioning a stretcher) 3 pairs of snow shoes (poles are an option but are not required) Each Scout will have the following in a day pack 1 one liter water bottle full 15 feet of rope 1 blindfold 1 pair extra gloves 1 extra hat 1 pair extra socks 1 can of soup (this will be collected at the inspection and donated to the Glens Falls area food pantry) Each Scout have proper outdoor gear Boots (no sneakers) Hat Coat Gloves/mittens Pants (Jeans or cotton sweat pants are not appropriate) WINTER GAMES EVENTS 01. FIRST AID Stretcher Carry Each patrol will need to construct a stretcher out of the blanket and 2 poles included on the list. The patrol works together place the patient on the stretcher and they must transport him through a course. If the patient is dropped 15 seconds will be added to the time each time the patient is dropped. This is a timed event.

4 02. Fire Lighting/Water Boiling boil water in a paper cup Start a fire without matches, using flint and steel, hot spark, fire by friction or compression (Battery and Steel Wool is not an allowed method). Use of a bow and drill of or fire piston will receive a bonus reduction in total time. Boil water in a paper cup that will be provided 03. A Frame Walk You will need to know the standard knots and lashings through First Class Rank (KNOTS-- Sheet Bend, Clove hitch and timber hitch) (LASHINGS Square and Diagonal) to construct the A Frame and join the 15 rope that each scout will bring to make the guy ropes to walk the A Frame 04. Nature FISHING FOR ARCTIC SNAPPER Six foot long sticks with string and metal weights (Hex Nuts) become the fishing rods. Mouse traps become the Arctic Snapper. Mouse traps will be set at a challenging distance and Scouts try to catch as many as possible. 05. Ice Rescue Each member of the patrol will be required to participate in the rescue and utilize the items found at the site of the rescue as well as those that they have on the sled. 06. Sled Bowling Each patrol will bowl one game of bowling (10 frames) Each member will bowl one frame utilizing a plastic sleds (provided) as the ball, standard scoring will be used. After each patrol member has bowled a frame the patrol leader will select the members to bowl the remaining frames (You may only bowl 2 frames unless you have less than 4 members in your patrol) 07. SNOW SHOE BIATHLON Each patrol will select 3 members who will, in snow shoes, travel a course where they will stop at a shooting station and use a slingshot to fire 3 tennis balls at 6 cans stacked in a triangle. This is a timed event and time will be added to the total depending on the number of cans left standing after the 3 shots (10 seconds per can remaining). 08. Winter GaGa Ball This will be a single elimination tournament with each patrol selecting 5 members to compete Good sportsmanship and honesty are a must, cheating will result in a forfeit and an automatic loss. If you get hit be honest and get out of the pit. You may substitute players between games but it is not required.

5 09. GIANT PIN BALL Each patrol will station members at various locations to act as flippers. Points are scored by landing the ball in pockets with varying point values. Each patrol will get 5 balls to score the maximum points. 10. Saw for Time and Safety Sawing a 4 log, Cutting wood with a bow saw. Each member of the patrol will cut a piece off a 4 log and demonstrate the proper technique for passing the saw. Time and safety will be judged to determine the winner. 11. Antler Toss Game Each member of the patrol is given 4 rings to toss toward the Buck (antlers strapped to a scoutmaster head). You must convince the Buck to help you or he can try to dodge your rings. 12. Whiteout Walk A rope is strung between trees along a zigzag route. All scouts in the patrol are blindfolded, spun around, and have their hands placed on a rope. They are timed as they follow the trail. The backstory is that there is whiteout weather conditions and they must follow a previously established trail. They must work as a team to be successful. 13. Track Identification and Tree Identification Patrols must identify which animals made various tacks in the snow. Patrol identifies common trees. This is usually done with evergreens, but a greater challenge would include trees that in winter can only be identified by their bark. 14. Tomahawk Throw Each patrol member will throw 3 hawks for score

6 The Judge at each station will record times, scores, distance form the final point, height and distance estimates. The fastest, largest score, closest to the correct location and closest height and distance estimate will be the combined with the judges estimate of use of the Patrol Method (teamwork), Scouts skills ability and Scout Spirit. (Please note that the Patrol Leaders skill and effectiveness will play an important role in the scoring process). For patrols that have differing numbers of participants average times and average total scores will be used. Patrols that have more than 2 scout above the rank of first class will not be eligible for bonus points at the inspection station nor will they receive any extra points for teamwork or scout spirt at each station. It is to a patrols advantage to not have more than 2 scouts above the rank of first class, therefore the higher rank scouts should be spread out among your competing patrols.
