1 Wagons West Derby Program General Information The Mad River Wagons West Derby is a one-day Cub Scout Activity. It is an outdoor, rain or shine, program which each Pack is encouraged to participate. There are eight activities named after several famous Native Americans and Cowboys along the trail. There will be an activity judge at each event to explain what the Den is to do, to be of assistance, and to score the Dens performance. Gold nuggets will be awarded on the dens participation and performance. ONCE YOU LEAVE THE STATION, YOUR TEAM CAN NOT GO BACK FOR YOUR SCORED POINTS. THIS IS THE LAW OF THE WEST. The Den is to construct a covered wagon for carrying all their supplies. The Wagon should be light construction since they will be pulling it over the trails as they complete in each activity. Each Pack will be required to bring their own meal or bagged lunch to the picnic grove or the Rotary Dining Hall. For maximum FUN, larger groups should split into smaller dens of 4-8 scouts. In the event that a larger group needs to split, it is suggested it be done by rank. This will allow provide den leaders the opportunity to plan completion of other requirements during lunch; e.g. outdoor cooking/meal planning. Each den must elect a Wagon Master (a scout) who will be responsible for leading the Den along the trail and at each activity. NO ADULT IS ALLOWED TO HANDLE THE WAGON OR ASSIST DURING THE SKILL TESTING. At least one adult (Den Leader) should accompany the Den at all times during the day. Scout families are also encouraged to attend and participate in activities, though only the scores from scouts will be counted. Potential Activities List: Native American Stations: 1. Sitting Bull Sling Shots Practice your aiming skills using slingshots and dog food/beans (bio-degradable). Each scout will be given 3 pieces of ammunition. The total number of hits will be divided by the number or scouts to come up with your average score. 2. Geronimo s Knife throw Practice you knife throwing skills. 3. Sacajawea s Scavenger Hike Review the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles. While moving along the trail record the items in your notebooks that you have seen, smelled, and heard along the trail. Refer to Cub Scout Handbook to tailor activities to your group. 4. Jim Thorpe s Indian Games Cub Scouts will learn to play one of many Indian games.

2 Potential Activities List: (Continued) Cowboy Trail 1. William Bill Pickett s Cowboy Wrangling Gather your scouts for some old west lasso tossing. Place a rocking horse or sawhorse at a fair distance from the line where players will stand. Give each player three tries to loop the lasso around the horse s neck. 2. Kit Carson s Beanbag Boot Toss Set-up a few cowboy boots on the table. Draw a line a few feet away from table in varying feet depending on the rank. Have players stand behind the line and toss beanbags at the boots. 3. Daniel Boone s Snake in my Boot Relay Divide players into two teams. Give each team a cowboy boot/container. At the end place two buckets filled with rubber snakes. On the go signal, the first player for each team race to retrieve a snake and place it in the boot. Those players then tag the next players in line, who also race to place a snake into their boots. The relay race continues until teams have filled the boot or container. 4. Buffalo Bill s Wheel Similar to ladder ball, but with a wheel that is spun. Other Activities Spirit Activities o Group theme o Most authentic wagon o Chants/songs Wagon yells and chants are great ways of passing time on the trail.
