3 MAYOR FRED EISENBERGER CITY OF HAMILTON GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF HAMILTON Welcome to the 24th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Sports Dinner! This past winter, Canada s athletes made us all proud with their outstanding performance at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Their achievements are the product of years of dedication and hard work, not only by the athletes themselves but also by countless others who helped them along the way. While the success of athletics at the community level isn t always measured in gold, silver and bronze, the tireless efforts of our sports volunteers who coach, officiate and administer amateur sport offer a golden opportunity to the youth of our community to enjoy, participate and develop, both as athletes and as individuals. Whether or not you are helping to start a future olympian on the road to success, your generous gift of time and knowledge enriches our community. I would like to express my sincere, personal thanks to all of you. Sincerely, Fred Eisenberger Mayor 77 James Street North Hamilton Ontario Canada L8R 2K3 Tel: Fax: hamilton

Tonight, for the 24th year we gather to celebrate your personal contribution to amateur sport in the City of Hamilton. As the General Manager of Community Services for the City, it is my pleasure and my honour to share this special evening with you and with our distinguished Olympic guests. I would like to extend my thanks to each and every one of you for your time, your effort, your skill and your enthusiasm. The value of your volunteerism goes well beyond the playing field and the ice rink; it helps to make us a stronger community. Once again, I look forward to working with you throughout the next year to ensure city facilities and staff support your fine work in our community. Congratulations to all! Sincerely, Joe-Anne Priel, General Manager Community Services Department 2 hamilton 2010
5 May 6, 2010 On the evening of Saturday, December 19, 2009 the Canada-wide Olympic Torch Relay made a stop at Dundurn Castle and Hamiltonians came out to celebrate and be a part of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Tonight, we are pleased to welcome representatives of Canada s 2010 Olympic Winter Games team as the City of Hamilton celebrates the achievements of our city s numerous community sports volunteers and honours the immeasurable contribution of Gene Sutton, President of SportHamilton, who passed away in August of last year. Gene Sutton was a force to be reckoned with and this space is far to small to do her justice. From teaching at the high school, community college and university levels to years of service with Gymnastics Canada, Gymnastics Ontario, and the Canadian Olympic Committee, Gene never stopped. She served as Team Canada s Chef de Mission at the Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic in She judged gymnastics. She worked tirelessly to bring the Commonwealth Games to Hamilton and along the way she inspired a whole generation of volunteers. Tonight, we honour Gene and celebrate her legacy as we recognize the achievements of Hamilton s sports volunteers. SportHamilton is pleased to play the lead role in the selection of the Sport Volunteer Awards. We are proud of the impressive list of nominations received this year and extend our congratulations to tonight s award recipients. John Byl President SportHamilton Sport for all hamilton
