12 Mission statement While millions in Africa depend on forest and tree resources, weak knowledge base is undermining sustainable management of these resources. The Programme aims to advance high level (PhD level) training through a regional research school of forestry that uniquely integrates multidisciplinary education and research, building on partnerships among several countries in Africa as well as with Europe and employ innovative teaching methods and tools. The school will stay innovative, relevant, adding value to existing efforts as well as bringing in public and private sector actors. With this novel approach, REFOREST Africa enhances human and institutional capacity for quality and relevant knowledge and skills in forest/tree systems. This in turn will lead to informed decision at all levels resulting in improved livelihood and enhanced environment in Africa.
