2 INFO & CONTACTS Venue: Dorpat Conference Center Soola 6, Tartu 51013, Estonia Contact: Tiina Möll, Sports Adviser Estonian Ministry of Culture, Phone: Press contact: Kai-Ines Nelson, Press Officer, Estonian Ministry of Culture, Phone: eesistumine.ee facebook.com/eu2017ee twitter.com/eu2017ee Head haridust väärtustavad sportlased Head konverentsil osalejad Mul on hea meel tervitada Teid konverentsil, mille fookuses on sportlaste topeltkarjäär ja elanikkonna liikumisharrastus. Eesti eesistumise raames moodustab see koos rahvusvahelise üliõpilasspordi päeva tähistamise ja Euroopa Spordinädala avamisega ühtse terviku. Me kõik soovime näha spordisangareid tippvõistlustel edukalt oma riiki esindamas. Nad on pingutanud tõsiselt sportliku eesmärgi nimel - jõuda maailma tippu. Kuigi tegemist on spordikonverentsiga, on mõlemad peateemad seotud mitmete teiste valdkondadega. Parimate lahenduste leidmisel tuleb teha laialdast riikidevahelist koostööd. Me soovime õppida Teie kogemustest ja jagada Teiega oma ideid. Indrek Saar Eesti Vabariigi kultuuriminister Dear athletes keen on education Dear conference participants I am very glad to welcome you to the Estonian Presidency conference focusing on athletes dual career in sports and physical activity in society. Organised within the framework of the Estonian Presidency of the EU, and dedicated to the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) as well as the official opening of the European Week of Sport in Estonia, Tartu, it addresses particularly well the topics at hand. All of us want to see our sports champions successfully represent our countries in top competitions. They have done their best in their efforts to reach their goals in sport to be the best in the world. In addition, we also want to see that our athletes who represent our country are well educated and able to meet demanding challenges, such as learning a profession, continuing their education and thus to be valuable members of society. There is an opportunity here not to be missed for the state to create a system which supports athletes in their career in sports, to obtain a university degree as well as secure a job. Combining sport and education allows athletes to develop versatility, opens up a considerably broader view of the world and shapes the characteristics needed to be successful on today s dynamic job market. Therefore, the first day of the conference focuses on the topic of athletes dual career in sports and education. We will be looking at how it is possible for an athlete in parallel with trainings to obtain a solid education, lay foundations for a professional career after finishing competitive sports. A good system for combining education and sports creates pre-conditions for a binary career as medical doctors, entrepreneurs, coaches and scientists. In order to reach this goal, it is important that state institutions, local government bodies, sports clubs and educational institutions all work together. On the second day, we will focus on the importance of physical activity and effects of leading a healthy lifestyle on society more broadly. When people are not sufficiently active and lead unhealthy lives, it not only takes a considerable burden on the social welfare expenditure of the state but also bears a considerable toll on the overall wellbeing of society. The fewer the number of years spent healthy, directly or indirectly affects every individual and family. Although a sports conference, both topics are closely related to other spheres of societal life. Therefore, in order to find the best solutions, we need to engage in broad multi-level cooperation with other countries. We are open to learning from your experiences and sharing with you our very own ideas. It is a great honour for Estonia to host you and I am looking forward to the exciting discussions during the conference. Indrek Saar Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia 3
