3 With the extinguishing of 16-day Olympic flame atop the Bird s Nest, the concluded successfully, but the spectacular that Beijing brought to the world would be left in the memory of people forever. With the joint efforts of the Chinese people and the people from other parts of the world, the became unforgettable high level sports gala. During the 16-day event, the perfect combination of Olympic spirit and Chinese ancient civilization with history of 5000 years, and the coexistence of different cultures from five continents rendered the whole world a wonderful and exciting moment. With the concepts of Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and Human Olympics, the succeeded in receiving satisfactions from both the athletes of all participating nations and the international community.

5 I. Sport is the biggest winner of. The success of Olympics depends heavily on if the athletes perform their best on the sports ground. Inspired by the holy Olympic flame, the best sports athletes from all over the world showed their superb athletic performances and sportsmanship, and their spirits of courageous struggle, fair competition, and self challenge and mutual learning.

6 During the 16-day event, over ten thousands of athletes from 204 countries and regions have competed in the Games in the Olympic spirit. They have achieved amazing results by breaking 38 world records and 85 Olympic records. The boasted a sports gala with not only the most participating countries but also the widest distribution of medals in the history.

7 A record 55 countries took one or more gold medals, 87 countries won medals, 12 more than the previous high in Sydney in 2000, among which h 6 countries or regions won either their first-ever gold medal or first medal of any color. African countries won a total of 40 medals, the highest total in history for the continent. China shaulof51 haul gold medals was the largest since the Soviet Union won 55 in Seoul in Britain, the host for the 2012 Summer Games, had its best Britain, the host for the 2012 Summer Games, had its best Olympics in a century with 19 gold medals.

15 During the seven years preparation for the Olympics from successful Olympic bid to successful conclusion of Olympics, China endured all kinds of hardships and tests, and the Chinese social psychology developed psychologically from restlessness to coolness and dfrom emotional to rational, and turned concern from Gold Medal First to Human itself, so that the confidence and tolerance matching the status of a great country gradually seeded, sprouted and bloomed in the hearts of Chinese people the moral power highlighted g by Confucianism tradition started to be mentioned, and China won supports relying on moral models, etiquette norms and moral appeals.

17 With excellent organization, considerate services and first-class facilities, the host shared its happiness and joy with people from other countries. The data collected from 38 countries and regions by the world renowned Nelson Media Agency showed that about 2 billion people watched the opening ceremony of, accounting for more than one third of the world population.

19 During the Olympics, the 26 Olympic culture squares in Beijing were arranged with 419 cultural l performances, and received 2.3 million tourists, and consequently became a vast platform for Chinese and foreign tourists and citizens to participate i t in Olympics and enjoy Olympics with the most direct access and the widest coverage. The world knows more about China, and China also knows more about the World.

20 IV. Olympic Diplomacy Over 80 heads of state and government gathered in Beijing for this Olympics, presenting a record on the history of folympics. The presence of so many leaders with different political opinions in Beijing embodied harmony by itself. The Olympic diplomacy rendered Beijing the World Center of Diplomacy.

22 Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) is a major science and technology body in the capital city. In the years of preparation for, BAST started from encouraging and stimulating the initiatives of science and technology workers, endeavored to guide science and technology staff in focusing on serving Olympics and actively implemented the concept of hi-tech Olympics to provide support to successful host of Olympics.

23 BAS (I) Provide Intellectual Support to Organization and Preparatory Work of T Olympics. The hi-tech Olympics needed support of sophisticated science and technology, encouraged innovation and application of science and technology, and demanded the truth-seeking and innovative scientific spirit.

24 BAS 1. Launched Olympics-related decision T making and consultation activities in diversified forms to enhance scientific rationality of decisions.

26 The possible natural disasters and man-made made hazards in 2008 through comparison of safety accidents and disastrous events during previous Olympics, and propose comments and suggestions accordingly. BAS T

27 Through consultation, the International Olympic Committee agreed postponement of two weeks than the prefixed period for 2008 Beijing Olympics, and consequently substantially ti reduced the risks of mid-summer high temperature, storm, wind and hail, and facilitated gradual establishment of comprehensive safety disaster reduction and emergency command system. 28 The experts suggestions made at the Quarterly Conversazione themed Making Full Use of Rainwater and Recycled Water for Creating Favorable Water Environment for Olympics directly caused the founding of Beijing water affairs coordination and leading group in 2003 and the formal establishment of Beijing Water Affairs Bureau in The founding of unified management system on water affairs provided effective organization and system insurance for construction and operation of water environment for Olympics. 29 The suggestions on design and construction of Olympic Green made at the quarterly conversazione themed Urban Garden Greening and Livable City Construction were adopted to directly result in enhancement of rationality and beauty of the Olympic Green. Other experts suggestions on air pollution control and traffic development strategy and Olympics food safety were also highlighted and adopted by municipal leaders. BAS T

31 The Summits have brought forth about 40 items of Olympic-related expert suggestions, among which the Suggestions on were adopted: Application and Development of Emergency Management Software Related to Olympic Safety, Use of Solar Energy in 2008, Strengthening Forecast in Dealing With Storms on Opening Ceremony of Olympics and Further Tapping Cultural Implications in Medals of. These reflected the openness of Olympic preparatory process and enhanced the scientific nature of preparatory work. BAS T

32 2. Widely Organized Olympic-related Academic Exchange Events and Promoted Interactive Development of Science & Technology and Olympics

33 Since 2002, BAST had organized about 40 large-scale academic exchange activities related to Olympics. Science and technology experts of different disciplines i gave their professional opinions and worked in close cooperation, and emerged many viewpoints and thinking with extremely practical values, and provided scientific basis and theoretical supports for successful organization and progress of Olympics from technological level. The spirit of science was fully reflected in preparatory process of Olympics, and the hi-tech Olympics and scientific development realized organic integration.

34 (II) Propagate Science Knowledge, Facilitate Extension of Olympics-related Scientific and Technological Achievements to Society and Promote Improvement of Public Science Literacy

35 The concept of hi-tech Olympics advocated innovation, transcendence and development in scientific exploration, and also emphasized on propagation and application of edgecutting science and technology achievements, popularization of Olympic science and technology knowledge, and improvement of public science literacy to benefit the society. The Beijing Municipal Construction Work Program on Scientific Literacy of All Citizens Civilians clearly proposed implementation of Olympic Scientific Popularization Action, and closely combined the popularization of Olympic science with improvement of public scientific literacy.

36 The Beijing Science and Technology Week and Olympics Lecture were large-scale mass scientific popularization p events themed on Olympics and for popularizing Olympic knowledge in different groups. Such events also played active roles in publicizing and practicing the concepts of hi-tech Olympics.

37 The exhibition tours for scientific popularization themed Sports in Motion- Interactive Shown on Scientific Exercises and Health Fitness were launched in 23 cities in 2005, of which main contents were to simulate Olympic projects and explain the scientific and technological contents in Olympic sports facilities and equipment. More than 5 million people benefited from the tours.

38 The large scale exhibition tours for scientific popularization with theme of Fulfill Your Dream with Technology and Greet Olympics with Harmony was launched in 9 cities in 2007, in which the latest achievements of Olympic technology such as Olympic torch, ETFE membrane structure of Water Cube, steel structure of Bird s Nest, National Indoor Stadium power generation model, food quality traceability system model, solar energy thermal power generation system model, automatic weather station and face recognition system.

39 For popular science readings, The Serial Books on Olympic Games (4 volumes), Popular Science Knowledge Handbook on Nationwide Body Building, Technology Mystery under Five-ring Olympic Flag, Heart-to-Heart Olympics, Citizen Readings on Olympics, Mental Fitness Guidance to Volunteer Service, Olympic Sports Rules and Etiquettes, Fuwa Book Series, and Illustrations on Olympic Games were formally published. The books have been distributed free of charge to millions of families in Beijing.
