In August, the club welcomed guest coaching sessions from former professional managers John Philiben and Sandy Clark. Sandy joined the team for their first session after the Special Olympics and was joined by Rangers first-team players Jon Daly and Nicky Clark as well as media including Sky Sports News TV cameras. In October, a new tracksuit for players and coaches was launched with support from Story UK and contributions from the funeral of Mr. Johnny Shanks (including a generous sum from Central Demolition Ltd.). The club were delighted to receive such support from their new tracksuit sponsor and recognised the legacy of Mr. Shanks by embroidering his initials on the back of every tracksuit top. The players worked tirelessly promoting their team too, with sponsored hillwalks up Dumyat in June, pitch displays at Stirling Albion FC and the Player of the Year night in October. The club also helped at fundraising events with Forth Valley Disability Sport and Stirling City F.C. The club's membership presently stands at 35 players supported by 11 coaches and volunteers Arion Swimming Club 23

The highlight of 2014 as far as Enable Arion Swimming Club was concerned was the participation at the Special Olympics in Bath during August. Once again the Swimming Team representing Forth Valley came entirely from our small Club. We sent 19 Swimmers and 6 Volunteers. Our Swimmers won 9 Gold medals, 9 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze Weapons (this includes all receiving a medal for relay. While many individual achievements were quite outstanding it was perhaps in the relays that our Swimmers really surpassed our wildest expectations. We were successful in winning two very high standard relays where the competition comprised teams from all over England, Wales and the rest of Scotland. What was particularly impressive was the leadership shown by our senior swimmers to the younger swimmers in the relay teams in getting them to achieve standards which perhaps these younger swimmers did not even consider to be possible. The Coach also is to be praised for all that she did at these Olympics. The cost of sending our Swimmers to Bath was very large indeed, Our Club assisted our Swimmers and Volunteers through the use of reserves which we had built up and through a number of fund raising activities. Nevertheless the Swimmers and Volunteers had to find considerable sums through their own resources and is to be regretted that funds do not appear to be available centrally to defray these considerable expenses. Total amount of medals the club have won this year tallys up to 186 medals Cheers Moira & Graham Forth Valley Flyers Athletics Club The Forth Valley Flyers have had another very successful year not only in regional competitions but at the Special Olympics in Bath. With all athletes achieving awesome results bringing home 4 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze medals. With the grant and fundraising from the race night, The Tombola Stall and The Dent Family for the entertainment and face painting at our Championships also The Donation from Denny and District Darts League, we were able to buy the team kit. We also bought all the team a towel and water bottle at Bath and a photo training diary as a memento The Club is now part of the Club Together Scheme through Scottish Athletics and now has in post our Club together Officer Mr. Harry Baird. Harry is working with us and the Falkirk Vics. to help promote the club and to help the club achieve, by promoting itself and making the club bigger and better, by getting word out into the wider community promoting the need for such a club and the need for volunteers so the club can grow and continue to be successful. He will also help the club apply for future funding, sourcing info that will help the club. Our membership has seen quite a few new members joining over the year and we have been able to put volunteers and coaches on many courses over the season to benefit the club. Both Graham Ross and Brian Nolan 24

are now Level one coaches and are working towards their Level 2 qualification, they have both attended the official s course to give them an insight into the judging at competitions. They are attending a Jumps course in the New Year which has been organized in conjunction with Falkirk Victoria Harriers. If you know of anyone who would be interested in volunteering please don t hesitate in let us know as the more volunteers and coaches we have will only benefit the club and athletes. Our Race running bikes are being used on a regular basis on Tuesday and Friday evenings and has seen Harris continue to progress as part of the National Development Race Running Squad. The Club was awarded the endeavor award from the Wishaw Games, this is awarded to a team and its supporters: for commitment, effort, attendance, sportsmanship, etiquette, and overall performance throughout the competition. We as a committee would like to thank our Coaches and Volunteers without whom the Club would not be such an enjoyable weekly event for our athletes, we will continue to seek funding so that the club can continue to grow and be successful in providing more opportunities for our Athletes Right On Target Forth Valley Boccia Club The Boccia Club offers weekly training for individuals over the age of 8 years and has 14 members including 4 ramp players. The purpose of the awards ceremony is to award the hard work and effort of Forth Valley s Athletes Coaches and Volunteers in the club s over the past year. These awards will link with other local and national awards. 6.0 SDS Regional Manager Reports With such an exciting year ahead for sport, and the pinnacle being the home Games in July with the 2014 Commonwealth hosted just a stones throw away in Glasgow, its hard not to be enthused by sport. The Commonwealth Games are one of the largest sporting events in the world and unlike the Olympics, the last two Commonwealth Games have included fully-integrated events for elite athletes with a disability, meaning any medals won by athletes with a disability count toward the final medal 32

count of the team for which they compete. This is an exciting time for disability sport, with Glasgow 2014 hosting the biggest ever Commonwealth Para-sport programme, and in turn will hopefully create a lasting legacy for disability sport and inspire the kids, parents and athletes within the Central region. The showcase of talent, globally, on such a prestigious platform, will be the talking point of many discussions for our home grown athletes, their performances and their achievements. Locally and regionally we must continue to promote opportunities pre and post Games to enhance the legacy of the Commonwealth in Scotland, raise the profile of disability sport and work together to reduce the barriers to encourage tomorrow s Paralympians from the Central region. So, between 23rd July and 3rd August lets support Team Scotland and..go FOR GOLD! Scottish Disability Sport would like to thank Lynne Glen for her endless time and commitment spent within Central as Regional Development Manager, the difference she has made to the lives of children, parents and athletes has been extraordinary. We would like to wish her all the best in her new position of Pathways Manager for Scottish Disability Sport. Professional Officers Group (POGs) This year has seen some changes to our local professional officers within Central. The introduction of Claire Scott (talking over from Blair Cremin) for disability sport within Active Stirling im sure will strengthen the provision in the local area, with many changes already due to take place in the coming months. I would also like to welcome back Lisa Male from Falkirk Community Trust (returning from maternity leave), she accompanies Fiona Hamilton for the disability provision for the Falkirk 33

area. Jean Duncan is continuing to support and promote disability sport within Clackmannanshire. Forth Valley Disability Sport co-ordinator and local professional officers are doing a fantastic job in continuing to raise participation levels in disability sport. These officers are the back bone of local and regional disability provision and it is encouraging that more pupils are benefitting from more events in the current financial climate. This year participation in junior festivals and competitions has risen from 704 to 786. Clackmannanshire Council, Falkirk Community Trust and Active Stirling are all delivering their school and community sports plans with engaging under represented groups as a priority. Each of the above partners have their own local festivals in the disability sport calendar to promote their own participation opportunities. Local Clubs Local disability specific club volunteer committees and their helpers and coaches are giving up hours of their time to widen the base of opportunities at accessible prices that families can afford in this current climate. In the Central region anyone with a disability can participate in weekly club sessions with their peers in athletics, boccia, bowls, football, swimming and wheelchair curling, with club memberships rising to 227 and the number of athletes training in mainstream clubs to 23. It is a pleasure to support the clubs and their volunteers on a professional basis as they give so much to their members in terms of training and competition throughout the year not forgetting the health and social benefits they offer their members. Please keep up all the good work you do for the children, young people and adults of the Central area. Coach Development Coach development will remain a high priority over the forthcoming year with the development of the Coaching Talent Central Programme becoming inclusive, creating a specific Disability Strand for disability specific and mainstream coaches, alongside a mentoring structure. A high priority this year will also be to support the mainstream coaches and their clubs to encourage inclusion and support the needs of athletes with a disability within their respective sports. Forth Valley Disability Sport Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank Angus, Graham, Mitchell and the committee for all their hard work over the last year. With the appointment of Mitchell to help support female participation, increase growth in areas of deprivation and spread awareness of disability sport, will no doubt be an asset to the branch. The work these 3 gentlemen do for the Forth Valley area alone is next to none, and this can be seen on a National platform, as it has been highlighted that FVDS is one of the strongest branches in Scotland. This year with the support of Jennifer Livingstone (Scottish Disability Sport Opportunities & Equality Manager) will no doubt strengthen 34

partnerships, increase awareness and develop disability sport within central to new heights. Forth Valley Disability Sport is in a great position and will continue to grow under the direction of the chair and the efforts of the committee. Athletes will continue to benefit from the strong relationship the branch has with local authority and trust partners, local clubs and Scottish Disability Sport as the delivery of the disability pathway in Central is very much a partnership approach and cannot be delivered with one organisation alone. 6.1 Scottish Disability Sport/ Regional Development Squads Swimmers and athletes with potential are invited to trial for the Regional athletics and swimming development squads. Athletes and swimmers are identified after regional and national championships with the regional and national manager for each sport. Currently there are 20 squad members, 10 athletes and 10 swimmers. Forth Valley Flyers Club has three sections that train over two nights, one of the sections is the regional squad level athletes. The swimmers train weekly within their clubs and for the first quarter of the year they came together once a month to train at the National Swimming Academy. The squad training sessions provide more quality training sessions with each of the coaches delivering being part of the regional coach support/mentoring programme. In addition to the athletes and swimmers there are also regional squad level athletes in the clubs, primarily, football, bowling, wheelchair curling and wheelchair rugby.the squad system is currently under review with swimmers and clubs. 6.2 Coach Education, Training and Development The Coach Education and Training Calendar is planned and co-ordinated in conjunction with the disability sport professional officers of each local authority, sports specific local development officers, Regional Managers and the local clubs. The annual programme consists of a mix of courses and workshops including of the boccia, football swimming and inclusion training. The need for courses is reviewed throughout the year in order to plan for the year ahead. As you can see from the Coach education table, 88 candidates benefitted from the planned programme last year. 36 Positive Coaching Scotland Parent Workshop 8 Positive Coaching Scotland Coaches Workshop 6 UK Disability Inclusion Training Clackmannanshire 22 Total Coaching Talent Central Programme Central developed a comprehensive mentor support programme for identified coaches in the Central area. This programme targeted Athletics and Swimming coaches that are operating at squad/club level and up skills coaches who are coaching development athletes with a disability. With the programme now in it s third year of infancy, 2013 seen it fully integrated into the Coaching Talent Central Programme, which is led by Pamela Dewar, sportscotland s Regional Coaching and Volunteering Manager for Central. Each coach on the programme was appointed a mentor which resulted in tailored support for the individuals. The initiative is a partnership approach by Scottish Disability Sport, Scottish Swimming, Scottish Athletics and sportscotland. Thirteen coaches working with athletes with disabilities were part of the programme and 2013 see bowls, football and boccia coaches included for the first time. Although it is a very coach centred programme commonalities in requests from coaches in Central resulted in a series of workshops delivered by high quality tutors to bridge the gap that Sports Specific Coach Education Courses can t fill. The identified athletics and swimming coaches continue to receive one to one support from Ian Mirfin and Sue Littlejohns respectively. Plans for 2014 will see a growth in coaches access the CTC programme, with all coaches involved able to access both mainstream and disability specific courses respectively. A main priority will be to increase the number of mainstream coaches within the programme to attend the Disability Strand of CTC to allow for inclusion across clubs within the Central area. We also hope to work with Regional development Managers to create high quality sport specific mentor structures in sport, both regionally and nationally. 6.4 Club Development Supporting clubs to become inclusive is a focus of the regional manager when there is a need for an athlete to access a mainstream club as part of their development. This is done very much in partnership with the sports specific regional managers or local development officer (where there is one). 36

This year the following football clubs have been successful in achieving the Scottish FA Pan Disability Award: Tullibody Community Football Club Stenhousemuir Football Club to Falkirk Football Community Foundation Syngenta Football Club are working towards the Inclusive Club award and are expected to put the final pieces into place to achieve the award this year. Links from Forth Valley Flyers to Falkirk Victoria Harriers became more formalised through the appointment of an inclusion officer (Paul Boggan) being appointed. Paul will be the key link with Flyer coaches to address the needs of developing athletes to progress into the mainstream club. Forth Valley Flyers have been included in the Scottish Athletics Club Together Initiative. Through this project the club benefits from a dedicated Club Together Officer (Harry Baird). Harry s role is to work with the club to strengthen their structures, recruit volunteers and grow membership. Two new bowling clubs have opened their doors to bowlers with a disability. Camelon Bowling Club and Causewayhead Bowling have welcomed 4 new bowlers this year. The clubs that continue to offer weekly training sessions for athletes with disabilities in Central are: Forth Valley Flyers Athletics Club Falkirk Victoria Harriers Athletics Club Right On Target Boccia Club The Dolphin Swimming Club Stirling Wheelchair Curling Club Alloa Swimming Club Falkirk Wildcats Wheelchair Rugby Club Tullibody Community Football Club Stenhousemuir Football Club Alloa East End Bowling Club Central Athletics Club Stirling City All Stars Football Club The Enable Arion Swimming Club Stirling Swimming Club Falkirk Indoor Bowling Club Falkirk Otters Swimming Club Falkirk Football Club Grangemouth Swimming Club Stirling City All Stars, Forth Valley Right on Target Boccia Club and Forth Valley Flyers have continued to secure funding to organise their own club championships which have seen clubs from all over Scotland come to compete. Through the fantastic efforts and commitments of the club volunteers and coaches we have seen club membership rise from 227 with 23 athletes training inclusively with mainstream clubs. As all the clubs grow the challenge is to cater for the growth through attracting new club helpers and creating a strong volunteer network of coaches to meet the demand. The number of coaches delivering to athletes with a disability is

Each of the clubs and the regional manager work proactively to recruit new volunteers and provide training for them to develop as they wish. Financial support is given by FVDS, Scottish Athletics and Scottish Swimming through various funding streams tied into volunteering initiatives. It has been said many times before however it is worth a closing mention as to how important the clubs are to the athletes, coaches and Forth Valley Disability Sport. As well as offering training, competition and developing their own club, they also give up time to be part of the Forth Valley Disability Sport Committee to shape the services of the organisation for the benefit of it s members and for this I thank you. 6.5 SDS National Programmes Congratulations to 11 very committed athletes from the Central area who have represented Scotland in their sport in the last year. The close working relationship between local authorities, clubs, Forth Valley Disability Sport and Scottish Disability Sport regional manager, pathways manager and performance manager results in a much better support network for athletes who are representing Scotland and GB. Athletes who represented Scotland last year were:- Athletics Badminton Boccia Bowls Football Swimming Table Tennis Cycling Wheelchair Curling Meggan Dawson Farrell Alan Oliver Jamie Docherty Kevin Wallace Fraser Mathieson Declan Doherty James Richmond Sam Agnew Connor Gordon Laura Cluxton Gill Keith 6.6 Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Squad (Central) Congratulations to Meggan Dawson Farrell who has confirmed her selection for Team Scotland and will compete in the T event. Meggan is excited at representing Scotland at the home games. 38

Kevin Wallace is still working hard to secure his place in the Para- bowls squad and will hear if he has been successful for the Physically Impaired squad in April of this year. 6.7 Scottish Disability Sport Academy Programme Vision The SDS Athlete Academy (Academy) supplements the continued development of our most promising and talented athletes and players, who have the potential to succeed at National, International, World and Paralympic Competitions. Principles The Academy will support athletes and players with their continued progression on a performance pathway by providing a system of sport specific support and education that will ensure our athletes are fully prepared for selection into the sportscotland Institute of Sport and UK World Class Programmes. The level of support provided varies depending on the needs of the individual and sport involved but will supplement and enhance their exiting program. Process Once a player or athlete is inducted into the Academy a detailed programme will then be designed and monitored to enhance their training and competitive programme. Support may be utilised in the following ways; Training Support; club membership/fees, facility access, sports equipment, competition entry fees, travel expenses and sports clothing. Sport Specific Support; classification, sport science, strength & conditioning, performance lifestyle, sports medicine and nutrition. 39
