4 Thank you for participating in the inaugural WinterKids Winter Games! This playbook will help you to succeed in each weekly challenge toward the gold medal prize. We have offered ideas on how to meet each weekly challenge, enlist healthy eating and active living organizations in your community, ways to encourage your students with incentives, and how to involve your local media. WinterKids is here to help every step of the way. Staff, interns, and volunteers will be in regular communication with you to answer questions, receive weekly participation scores, and support your efforts. Please call us for help at any time! 5 WinterKids Winter Games OFFICIAL RULES & REGULATIONS Eligibility: In the premier year of the WinterKids Winter Games, one elementary school per county was invited to participate in the WinterKids Winter Games based on past participation and successful completion of the WinterKids Challenge in in our target geographical areas. No purchase or payment of any kind is necessary to enter or win this content. WinterKids Winter Games Description: One elementary school in each of Maine s 16 counties will compete in the WinterKids Winter Games: a four-week physical activity and nutrition challenge during the month of January. Each school can earn up to a total of 100 points for the successful completion of four weekly challenges: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY % of students who move a minimum of 300 minutes 25 points NUTRITION % of students who complete 5 healthy eating activities 25 points FAMILY INVOLVEMENT % of students who incorporate physical activity and nutrition at home 25 points WINTER CARNIVAL % of students who participate in a celebration of winter activity 25 points As set forth below in more detail, schools can accrue additional points for school spirit, exceeding minimum goals, engagement with WinterKids, creativity, school-wide participation, opening & closing ceremonies, and collaborating with healthy eating and active living organizations in their community. Competition Period: The WinterKids Winter Games runs January 2 31, All points must be recorded and submitted on a weekly basis, but in no event later than Wednesday, January 31, Winners will be announced on Tuesday, February 6, Agreement to Official Rules and Regulations: By participating in the WinterKids Winter Games, participating schools agree to these rules and regulations, and agree to accept the decisions of WinterKids as final and binding on all matters pertaining to the WinterKids Winter Games, including eligibility, selection of winners and interpretation of these rules and regulations. Each participating school agrees to collect accurate and reliable data and submit the collected data to WinterKids on a weekly basis, and further agree to provide any additional information reasonably requested by WinterKids, to the extent permitted by law. WinterKids reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any participating school for any failure to comply with these rules and regulations, or any other instruction provided by WinterKids in the course of the WinterKids Winter Games. Winner Selection & Notification: Schools can accrue a maximum of 25 points per weekly challenge, for a maximum total of 100 points. Points are awarded based on the percentage of total student body meeting the minimum requirements for each weekly challenge described above (e.g. 100% of student body meets physical

6 activity challenge = 25 points; 55% of student body meets physical activity challenge = points, and so on). A maximum of 25 bonus points can be accrued through: submitting a video (5 points), holding an opening ceremony (5 points), holding a closing ceremony (5 points), collaborating with healthy eating and active living organizations in your community (5 points), and demonstrating school spirit (5 points). An independent judges panel (selected by WinterKids) will break ties to determine the Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention winners. Prizes: THE REWARD HONORABLE MENTIONS Gold Medal School $ School visit with Maine Winter Olympians Silver Medal School $ Winter equipment for the school ($500 value) Bronze Medal School $ Whitewater raft sledding with Adventure Bound All cash prizes will be in the form of a check made out to winning schools. There are no restrictions on how the winning schools use the prize money, however WinterKids encourages that it be used to support physical activity and nutrition initiatives in the school. WinterKids reserves the right to change Honorable Mention prizes at any time based on availability. Publicity: Participation in the WinterKids Winter Games by a participating school, and/or acceptance of any prizes, grants WinterKids a non-exclusive, royaltyfree, and irrevocable license to use the school name, location, submitted photographs and videos for promotional purposes in any manner or media without notice, additional permission or compensation, except where prohibited by law. By submitting any photographs and videos, participating schools certify that any necessary authorizations or consents have been obtained from the appropriate individuals. General Conditions: WinterKids (including, but not limited to, its officers, agents and employees) is not responsible for, and is not liable for, any injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising out of, related to, or as a result of the WinterKids Winter Games, including but not limited to, claims from participating schools or third-parties for losses, injury or damages of any kind arising in any manner, directly or indirectly, from participation in the WinterKids Winter Games, any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the WinterKids Winter Games, misdirected or delayed mail/ , computational errors related to the WinterKids Winter Games and/or losses, injuries or damages arising from or relating to cancellation or early termination of the WinterKids Winter Games. Participating schools further agree to indemnify, defend and/or otherwise hold harmless WinterKids (including, but not limited to, its officers, agents and employees) from and against any and all claims, demands, expenses, losses or liabilities, of any kind, that may be asserted against, or incurred by WinterKids related to (directly or indirectly) or as a result of, the WinterKids Winter Games.

8 Getting Started Attend a WinterKids webinar on December 5 or December 7 Create a WinterKids Winter Games Committee in your school Familiarize yourself with all of the resources and incentives in your toolkit Create a school roster video and send it to WinterKids Enlist parent/s to help, and get them excited about their child s participation Send out a press release with the template we have provided Familiarize yourself with the Community Resources Folder we have provided on the flash drive

9 How to Report Your Points Each teacher has a scoring sheet for each week of competition Your school will identify a champion to report points to WinterKids weekly Cumulative points and student body participation must be reported to WinterKids by the following Monday after each Challenge Week Call or Marion Doyle ext 103 or mdoyle@winterkids.org In order to appear on the WMTW Channel 8 Leaderboard each Sunday morning, your points must be submitted to WinterKids by 3 p.m. on Friday of the Challenge Week Up to 25 additional points can be accrued by: opening ceremony (5), closing ceremony (5) spirit, school-wide participation (5), collaboration with healthy eating/active living organizations in your community (5), and school spirit (5)

14 For 20 years, The Passport has introduced fifth, sixth and seventh graders to outdoor winter fun in Maine. Since 1997, WinterKids has introduced over 75,000 Maine kids to winter sports.
